50mm is definitely the sweet-spot lens. Works for portraits, candids, and groups. The f/1.8 is incredibly good related to price, weight, and light gathering. I use my 50mm and 85mm f/1.8 lenses for everything. Their light weight makes shooting comfortable for me, which improves connection with my subjects.
I have the 50mm 1.2 S and carry it on my Z6ii for bridal prep, and portraits. It feels really good and doesn’t weigh me down, but I’m used to carrying a 24-70mm 2.8 and a 70-200mm 2.8 on two different bodies at the same time. I think you’d enjoy the 1.2 for weddings long-term.
for wedding definitely 24-70/2.8 because solves almost all situation... in many cases you can deal with 24-70/4 from canon, which has macro capability and to be honest, you have time to play with photos, the only limitation could be light... not quantity, but quality... everybody is frozen to help you catch nice pictures, no possibility to open aperture too much in group of people...
The z 50mm 1.2 is amazing but I agree with you. The trade off with bulk and weight wasn't worth it. Sold my 1.2 and went back to the what I had before the 1.8.
Brilliant video and lovely images, I have a wedding coming to shoot in the next few weeks for family and I have been stressing a bit over lenses so it’s great to see what can potentially be achieved with what I already have rather than have to go out and rent something. I have a 50mm and a 70-200 f/4 which is probably a bit dark for churches but I love both and know them well so it’s good to know that I can probably mostly get away with those. Thanks again

That is the Tamron lens that he raves about and says it is fantastic and he can shoot a whole wedding on that one lens. I shoot Nikon, so I'm still trying to decide to shoot it with my Z24-70 2.8s lens, or two bodies - one with the 35 1.8 and other with the 50 1.8. The zoom is awesome but means I'll have higher ISO in low light and loose some of my backgrounds.

When I started shooting weddings for myself, I used two medium format cameras with a normal lens, a wide lens, and a telephoto lens. Today, if forced to take a digital wedding with only one lens on a "full-frame" digital body, I would choose 35mm f/1.4 or 50mm f/1.4 or 28-70mm f/2.8 zoom. On an APS-C digital body, I would choose 23mm f/1.4 or 23mm f/2 or 16-55mm f/2.8 zoom. Thankfully, I am not forced to make such a selection.

I love your name! My youngest son is named Titus Grey. Anyway, I don’t think I’ve ever used anything shorter than a 50 with a bride or groom. I would stick with close ups and focus on various parts of the face and then the hands of the make up artist. I’ve only ever used my 24-70 to photograph with on 3 occasions, but I mainly use that lens for video. I don’t like it for photography, but I love it for videography.
Completely reasonable choice. But if weight is an issue - why not remove your big flash and diffuser for shots outside? The diffuser is pointless outside. Also putting the lens hood on your lens, but in reverse, hurts my brain.
so I booked my first wedding this summer and I have a nikon z7ii. Do I have to get an adapter if I want to get the 70-200mm lens you have linked? I'm pretty sold on getting it but I don't know which adapter to get if I need one, and I want to make sure it doesn't interfere with the quality of my photos! SOS!
Unpopular opinion but the 50mm is a difficult lens to use in some situations, like if space is quite tight. I know that with a 35mm I'm never going to have that issue, it's quite wide but not wide enough to distort. I think I have to use a 50mm more to gain all the benefits everyone else does.
Am I seeing things? in the closing time lapse sequence, you lens hood is on the lens in storage mode. It also appeared to me that the camera was NOT turned on as well.
If I had to select only one lens for shooting a wedding with a full-frame digital camera, it would be a 28-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor zoom. If I had to select only one lens for shooting a wedding with an APS-C digital camera, it would be a 16-55mm f/2.8 Fujinon zoom.
The F1.8 is equally as sharp wide open and the AF is slightly faster. You only gain the bigger aperture with the F1.2. And its huge size & weight. There is no "overall better performance". The F1.8 S line is pro grade.
Jennifer what camera do you use. 50mm is an excellent choice. I use a Z6. Loves low light capabilities. I could use that with my 70 200 f2.8 or my 90mm manual or my 28-200 f3.5 -
I love my z6 as well. I would say the camera I use most right now is the Z6ii. I used the z5 quite a bit last year so I could make youtube videos about it. I mainly film with my z7. But I just got the Z9, so I’ll predominately be using that one going forward.

I got the Nikon S 50 1.2, so I'd pick that one. Opportunity for good bokeh, still wide enough to do indoor work and of course low light.

I’m addicted to the 50mm f1.2 S. So versatile yet produces really special, unique results. It is big and heavy, but so worth it to me.

Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 on my Sony a7 IV 😉💜💗❤️ shot over 30 weddings so far in 2022. I was able to cut from 2 bodies on me all the time …to one .
Do you think thats better than running a Tamron 70-180 and sigma 24-70 art duo?

24-70 2.8S is a great lens and so versatile. I give up some soft background, however.

I have a 50mm, but I'm debating if I should also get an 85mm (mainly for portraits).
85 mm definitely gives you beautiful portraits ... but 50 mm is for everything ... portraits, covering ceremonies ..

It was a tough choice between the 35 and the 50 for me.
I agree 35 is the most versatile prime. It's good for everything. So you can get away with it on a wedding day.
