I managed to get a maximum of 300fps on Minecraft but with hours of optimizations, a full wipe, optifine, lowest possible settings and in the void using the Alt-Tab trick. Since then I now have a nice gaming rig. Edit: I forgot to mention that the system was always locking up, requiring me to kill the power and restart the machine. It had an Intel i5 7200U and Intel HD Graphics 620. It was so underpowered that it only took 15 watts of power.
Even on a pretty bad laptop I still get mostly 20 tps and normally at least 30 fps. (30 is the minimum of what I consider playable). I am using sodium and trying to get every bit of performance possible, but I still want it to look okay, so graphics are still on fancy. Also have a few client mods for building farms. Oh yeah, I have quite a few big farms running, including sometimes a mob switch and a shulker farm, both chunkloaded. A tnt based tree farm that I run afk (though with particles off, the leaf crushers lag a bit too much). It's not that bad. Yeah, random lag spikes happen from time to time (and I know it isn't autosave), but it's usable. And I think the lag spikes are from badly configured chunk loaders (when running) or the flying machine bamboo farm. (That thing produces way too many entities and block updates when harvesting).

@randy s Most Chromebooks are from school districts and are 2 core 2 thread intel processors. I have trouble playing even Slope io on it. Even the newer Chromebooks that cost $1,000 make it seem like it can just play games easily but you have to use Linux and use an external GPU just to get good performance.
The most likely real reason is security. Minecraft on geforce now (early access) got exploited so much to run unauthorized programs its not even funny. They ended up just removing it. (Also i get this is a joke)

Both of those are not the most impressive feats but way more than OG Doom. Either you had 100 other programs running or are straight up lying.

I had to try it, it was ok for me, u could play opsu, Roblox, and web games like krunker. I got a solid 56 FPS for Krunker and that’s fairly good for a chrome book
The only reason why I use my chromebook for games is Friday night funkin', even then I can only play half the game because half the levels just crash the game because my laptop decides to kill the cpu when loading the level (not literally, if that happened then I wouldn't be able to much on my laptop)

You know things are bad when my crappy laptop from around 2014 can run minecraft better Edit: It's more like 2013. Just so you know how much it would have cost, it was the smallest size of its line and it has an i3 in it. It's a hand me down and my older brother had to put more ram in it just to reach 8 gb.
My old 2009 netbook with intel atom 1.6ghz and gma945 could do better. Also a Amd Athlon Xp 3000+ from 2002 if paired with a decent gpu could do better.
@3165dwayne why? atleast you can set up when windows should not update, you can even turn off notifications while gaming, so I don't really see any notification issue with Windows nor update issues for that matter.
@@Carlium on windows it prevents sending notifications when your on fullscreen mode, so if you're playing minecraft on fullscreen, you wont get notifications, also you can just do what you said anyway

I do nothing on the chromebook that needs any "actual computer" to do, and everything I do on it runs perfectly. And in return it costs much less than any laptop worth buying, does much better than any equivalent laptop new would manage (cheap laptops are even worse value than chromebooks by a loooong way, never buy those cheap laptops you see around), is much lighter, and has a battery life that destroys any laptop costing within many, many £100s. I also have a moderately powerful laptop (nothing special, but ok enough). But I don't need to travel with it all the time, I can grab the chromebook when travelling in some scenarios where I don't want to drag a much heavier machine around, and it has good battery and does everything I need. The fact you either don't understand or need the use case, doesn't mean the entire world is the same as you. Time to realise you are not the centre of the universe maybe?
It's a good tool to prevent kids from playing most mainstream games and focus on their work (until the kids inevitably find less taxing games that can run on the system or use a streaming service like GeForce Now if they have access to an online payment method).
My mom bought me a chromebook because she isn't very tech savvy.... Funny thing is it's more powerful than the pc she paid like 350$ for so I guess I won, but the problem is she thinks her computer is broken because mine runs better than hers! (Sorry this is a bit of a run-on sentence)
There may be a few things you can do to get maybe 30fps, that being the sodium mod and maybe a 1x1 texture pack. I guess if you just want to play mobile games you COULD sideload/download some on there, but the point still stands. I think they're an acceptable laptop for Grandma to browse the facebooks or do some light Google docs work but for most cases it doesn't do much else. Google needs to stick to advertising what a chromebook actually is; a budget, office work laptop. Not a gaming PC.

They arent even that though. If “office work” implies some google sheets, maybe a powerpoint, and a few other tabs for email or what have you, then it isnt cut out for that. Had to use the same model he did for school and a 12(20?) Slide ppt had to reload every time i went out of tab to a google doc. And even then it only loaded the current slide, and took multiple seconds to even register scrolling through slides

Not all games are compatible with stadia, e.g. Minecraft. Also, that beta container is the easiest way to get Linux on a Chromebook. He could dualboot but that's difficult for a n00b

I honestly can't tell if it's authentic ignorance or a joke, but they are literally designed to be remote devices, that's why they have native internal internet capabilities(SIM cards), and decent video rendering, AKA they are designed to process nothing on their own, and have everything sent to them in video format for ANY processes, not just gaming, for video editing, for photoshop, YOU NAME IT, it is designed to be streamed to the device nonlocally, and so it seems obvious to this guy installing minecraft on the chromebook is going to result in low quality, but I'm not so sure it's obvious to him the purpose of the device, is to access another device that can. You can literally download windows remote, you can literally buy a $5 windows XP off ebay, you can literally remote connect the chromebook to the $5 ebay computer, install Minecraft on the rig, and boom, portable minecraft. But without using the computer in the way it's meant to be used, it's fairly obvious it won't work, that same chromebook can launch max settings path of exile when it's done through a stream server, like, you know, what it was designed for and what not. If you installed Snake onto a television remote controller, would you sit there and scratch your head at the inferiority of the design of the remote control? On top of them being shitty performance in my opinion, all of the internals are hardwired and cannot be replaced without micro soldering and off brand chips. I work at the IT in a school, they cost cheaper to buy, but sense you cant fix them (and lord knows middle/high school kid are tough on them!) they will probably end up costing more than they saved us. One more thing, I am a strong believer that the kids should be able to do (mostly) what they want with the computer as long as its reversible. This is because I wouldn't be nearly as skilled with computers as I am now had I been limited to a chromebook in school. The one thing I will give to chrome is that the chromebooks at least run google fast
To be fair (for clarity, this is NOT a chromebook defense. I was subjected to using one for a year, and I now have to take multiple medications for my trauma), Minecraft has gotten extremely bulky in recent years. It doesn't matter how simple the graphics are anymore, so many things are going on at once, it's VERY impressive that something as simple as a phone can run it at a good 30 - 60 fps.

I use Shadow VM for most gaming, Picked up a 200$ chromebook to run the app. Basically just using it as a thin client. I also run it on my phone with a handheld controller. I know I know the first thing people go to is latency, shadow has done alot of work on their infrastructure and r&d on eliminating latency. While its impossible to remove it is very possible to make unnoticeable. I have been able to run everything from StarCraft Multi-player to PC VR streaming to an Oculus Quest with no notable Latency Issues. Shadow is the best of the current streaming solutions because they actually have done the legwork. I would never say to game on a chromebook natively but streaming works perfectly. I also have ran it with as little as 5mb/s connection so its not an issue with internet speed. If you ever had a bad taste with streaming solutions before don't let that sour shadow, its definitely worth it. My entire steam library is available on the go. The only downside is if there is an internet outage or an update being pushed then yea your gonna have a bad day but in the 3 years I've been a subscriber thats happened so little that I can't say its been a major issue.

my aunt bought me a chromebook when i asked her for a laptop for playing WoW, so i was pissed, but i ended up figuring out how to run the built in Linux to create a windows VM so i could play and i ended up doing some serious raiding, but the game ran at 5 fps, crashed frequently, and it would freeze for 5 seconds everytime you targeted something or cast a spell. great gaming machine 10/10

atleast you can set up when windows should not update, you can even turn off notifications while gaming, so I don't really see any notification issue with Windows nor update issues for that matter.

I do nothing on the chromebook that needs any "actual computer" to do, and everything I do on it runs perfectly. And in return it costs much less than any laptop worth buying, does much better than any equivalent laptop new would manage (cheap laptops are even worse value than chromebooks by a loooong way, never buy those cheap laptops you see around), is much lighter, and has a battery life that destroys any laptop costing within many, many £100s. I also have a moderately powerful laptop (nothing special, but ok enough). But I don't need to travel with it all the time, I can grab the chromebook when travelling in some scenarios where I don't want to drag a much heavier machine around, and it has good battery and does everything I need.
The fact you either don't understand or need the use case, doesn't mean the entire world is the same as you. Time to realise you are not the centre of the universe maybe?
It's a good tool to prevent kids from playing most mainstream games and focus on their work (until the kids inevitably find less taxing games that can run on the system or use a streaming service like GeForce Now if they have access to an online payment method).
My mom bought me a chromebook because she isn't very tech savvy.... Funny thing is it's more powerful than the pc she paid like 350$ for so I guess I won, but the problem is she thinks her computer is broken because mine runs better than hers! (Sorry this is a bit of a run-on sentence)

There may be a few things you can do to get maybe 30fps, that being the sodium mod and maybe a 1x1 texture pack. I guess if you just want to play mobile games you COULD sideload/download some on there, but the point still stands. I think they're an acceptable laptop for Grandma to browse the facebooks or do some light Google docs work but for most cases it doesn't do much else. Google needs to stick to advertising what a chromebook actually is; a budget, office work laptop. Not a gaming PC.

They arent even that though. If “office work” implies some google sheets, maybe a powerpoint, and a few other tabs for email or what have you, then it isnt cut out for that. Had to use the same model he did for school and a 12(20?) Slide ppt had to reload every time i went out of tab to a google doc. And even then it only loaded the current slide, and took multiple seconds to even register scrolling through slides

I honestly can't tell if it's authentic ignorance or a joke, but they are literally designed to be remote devices, that's why they have native internal internet capabilities(SIM cards), and decent video rendering, AKA they are designed to process nothing on their own, and have everything sent to them in video format for ANY processes, not just gaming, for video editing, for photoshop, YOU NAME IT, it is designed to be streamed to the device nonlocally, and so it seems obvious to this guy installing minecraft on the chromebook is going to result in low quality, but I'm not so sure it's obvious to him the purpose of the device, is to access another device that can. You can literally download windows remote, you can literally buy a $5 windows XP off ebay, you can literally remote connect the chromebook to the $5 ebay computer, install Minecraft on the rig, and boom, portable minecraft. But without using the computer in the way it's meant to be used, it's fairly obvious it won't work, that same chromebook can launch max settings path of exile when it's done through a stream server, like, you know, what it was designed for and what not. If you installed Snake onto a television remote controller, would you sit there and scratch your head at the inferiority of the design of the remote control? @@TheVoiceOfChaos you get a mouse and keyboard and larger screen with a chromebook, giving an actual computer experience, but I literally play AAA title games on my phone with a bluetooth keyboard already yes, so obviously chromebook can do that.
On top of them being shitty performance in my opinion, all of the internals are hardwired and cannot be replaced without micro soldering and off brand chips. I work at the IT in a school, they cost cheaper to buy, but sense you cant fix them (and lord knows middle/high school kid are tough on them!) they will probably end up costing more than they saved us. One more thing, I am a strong believer that the kids should be able to do (mostly) what they want with the computer as long as its reversible. This is because I wouldn't be nearly as skilled with computers as I am now had I been limited to a chromebook in school. The one thing I will give to chrome is that the chromebooks at least run google fast

To be fair (for clarity, this is NOT a chromebook defense. I was subjected to using one for a year, and I now have to take multiple medications for my trauma), Minecraft has gotten extremely bulky in recent years. It doesn't matter how simple the graphics are anymore, so many things are going on at once, it's VERY impressive that something as simple as a phone can run it at a good 30 - 60 fps.
Might I remind you that most high-schoolers use this as a "gaming" "computer"
Oh lord, yes. I'm in grade 9 (that's high school here as we don't have middle school) and basically everyone I know has some kind of Chromebook and they act like it's the best shit ever, it's honestly hilarious

I'm able to play Crysis Remastered at 10p on my 2009 chromebook. Google is correctly marketing these as gaming machines.

I use Shadow VM for most gaming, Picked up a 200$ chromebook to run the app. Basically just using it as a thin client. I also run it on my phone with a handheld controller. I know I know the first thing people go to is latency, shadow has done alot of work on their infrastructure and r&d on eliminating latency. While its impossible to remove it is very possible to make unnoticeable. I have been able to run everything from StarCraft Multi-player to PC VR streaming to an Oculus Quest with no notable Latency Issues. Shadow is the best of the current streaming solutions because they actually have done the legwork. I would never say to game on a chromebook natively but streaming works perfectly. I also have ran it with as little as 5mb/s connection so its not an issue with internet speed. If you ever had a bad taste with streaming solutions before don't let that sour shadow, its definitely worth it. My entire steam library is available on the go. The only downside is if there is an internet outage or an update being pushed then yea your gonna have a bad day but in the 3 years I've been a subscriber thats happened so little that I can't say its been a major issue.
Now that Geforce Now is available for Chromebooks it has changed the game forever.

@link 4448 I've got a 6.3 inch display on my phone and it it's 4k , looks much better than a chromebook and I can use it wherever instead of being able to use it on a flat surface. Also, I can use cellular data to play basically anywhere. Lmao, a chromebook is much worse

my aunt bought me a chromebook when i asked her for a laptop for playing WoW, so i was pissed, but i ended up figuring out how to run the built in Linux to create a windows VM so i could play and i ended up doing some serious raiding, but the game ran at 5 fps, crashed frequently, and it would freeze for 5 seconds everytime you targeted something or cast a spell. great gaming machine 10/10
