Actually, this is ok PC now. With this motherboard you can upgrade RAM to triple-channel 6*4=24 GB, which is plenty for now and wont be too slow bc of triple channel. And you can buy Xeon X5650 (6c/12t) for $10 on aliexpress and overclock to 4.2-4.8 GHz, it will be around 2000 cinebench r20 points. Another option is W3680 (6c/12t) for $45 for easyier overclock because of unlocked multiplier. Perfect as mid-level system for nowdays, just add, maybe RTX2060, two dirt-cheap sticks of ram and dirt-cheap xeon CPU.
@Niklause Mikaelson First of all, I didn't meant you should buy videocard from ali. Buy it in local store or craigslist of whatever. And xeons are ok. How else you can get 2000+ cb r20 points CPU for $10? Or even $45. Yes, they are used. Yes, there is no point to bild new PC with old xeon from ali, but if you have mobo compatible with xeon, why not? Used CPU is ok, there is no any noticeable degradation in used CPUs. Yes, it is not fastest CPU in existance, but it is ok mid-level. And it will be more "upgrade PC" rather than "throw away old and make new" like in this video.

Agreed... Going back to a windowless case next year. Was sick of the rgb on my o11 build before it was even done. Too much of a pita. Thinking meshify or define case.
Yeah, I sort of miss that, the Antec P180 was a huge chunk of steel. Coolermaster had their memorable HAF series, not the best build quality but boy did they flow air, the looks were great too.
@Casual Scum The budget segment is really bad now. Back then it was boring PCs with super thick steel bodies, not fancy but sturdy. Now they try to focus on adding glass and rgb fans, making the frames super flimsy and including AWFUL USB ports. As for the high end they settled for average frames (which is fine) and focused on the features, filters, brackets, controllers, etc.
I had an earlier silver version of that case when it was still named 'Tsunami'. It launched in August 2004 then in December a tsunami killed 230,000 people after an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. This probably led to the name change but I'm not so sure if 'Wave Master' was the best choice. 😅 Edit: Apparently these were just 2 very similar cases from different brands, nonetheless 'Tsunami Dream' turned out to be a poor naming choice back in 2004.

Two: the upper usb and audio ports can be switched for a 80mm fan, there is a grill that comes with the case to replace the usb ports.

As for your comment of "technology is moving so quickly..." honestly, that's less of an issue in the last 5-8 years. Ever since cpu manufacturers have been focusing on # of cores and not clock speed, you can run a ton of new games on significantly older hardware. (Because most games (even today) are so poorly multithreaded that it doesn't matter, only clock speed matters.) My current CPU is 6 years old (6700k) and I can still run every modern game on the highest settings (unless the game is a PoS). My gpu is overkill for playing at 1080p, and I could easily run a GPU from that era (Like a 980ti) as well and still get above 60 fps.
Facts, my 6700k has been holding up very well for most games. I think the only game that has severely made my CPU chug was S.T.A.L.K.E.R Anomaly, because of how many AI are on the map at once and being controlled by your CPU. Other than that, any issues I have ever had with my "CPU' ended up being a software issue, mainly having to do a clean install of drivers.
What a flashback! Now I have a house full of Apple products from almost every category. The Air Force got me hooked on Apple products... LOL!
The i7-920 and that motherboard were designed for triple-channel memory. So multiples of 3 sticks. Running it with 4 sticks forces the memory controller to run in single-channel mode. That's a big hit to CPU performance. This is why 12GB and 24GB memory configurations were common in high-end PCs back then.
That's what I noticed when he opened the case. This Asus motherboard was expensive in it's day, and still goes for a decent price on used markets. Drop in a 6 core Xeon with triple channel memory and a newer graphics card.
This was a great trip down memory lane. I remember having an intel i7 920 CPU AND 2x MSI twin frozr 6950s in crossfire myself! I still have one of them floating around. what a great vid!

YO I just bought a Cooler Master Cavalier 3 as a nostalgia piece. I built my first PC during high school in it, it was the cousin model to the Wave Master!
I can't even begin to imagine just how hot that thing must've been running. Original Twin Frozr II design which, for the uninitiated was horrendously inefficient and ineffective at cooling and not only is it in a stifled case and paired with another card in AMD Crossfire, the fact that they're older AMD cards which ran hotter than the surface of the sun only makes these conditions even worse. That thing'd give even my old space heater of an FX build a run for it's burning money.
The RAM choice was really nice. He matched the RAM colors and style with the motherboard heatsinks. I miss when people color and style matched without RGB. But I do appreciate RGB too.

Thermaltake makes the same looking case but with a side window with one of the best latching mechanism keylock that came out around the same time, I still have it in my garage. That case was ahead of it's time
I just retired my 920 in early 2018, they are a beast of a cpu still. If you have a chance to boot back into it and see which stepping of the CPU you have, if it's a D0 it's godlike in terms of overclocking. As a novice overclocker I was getting 3.66GHz on it w/ a 212 Evo. I've heard stories of them hitting 4.2 on air and the sky is the limit I'd imagine w/ a custom loop.

Other than that, any issues I have ever had with my "CPU' ended up being a software issue, mainly having to do a clean install of drivers.
yeah my 970 has been able to run new games very well

The i7-920 and that motherboard were designed for triple-channel memory. So multiples of 3 sticks. Running it with 4 sticks forces the memory controller to run in single-channel mode. That's a big hit to CPU performance. This is why 12GB and 24GB memory configurations were common in high-end PCs back then.
That's what I noticed when he opened the case. This Asus motherboard was expensive in it's day, and still goes for a decent price on used markets. Drop in a 6 core Xeon with triple channel memory and a newer graphics card.

Multi-GPU setups are impractical and expensive. But man they look so cool.
If you are doing something like Folding or GRUGrid, then they are decently practical.
