Loved the video because it's so relatable. Getting sloppy when getting frustrated is a normal part of troubleshooting. If you are still having trouble with this system, you're welcome to fly out with all the parts and do troubleshooting in the lab here! Might be faster with the storage room of parts and other tools.
Good guy nexus
This is Wholesome
Yeah, that's why idk how u and Jay managed so well during Linus' troubleshooting face off lmao. Thank u Steve. I'm one more explosion away from accepting ur offer
I think Kyle needs a hug more than anything.
Do itttt
This is actually a much more useful video than a smooth successful build video would ever be.
Yes, indeed!
This was a video of real shit. Everyone goes through it and it was good to see the troubleshooting steps
I agree completely.
Yeah, so many channels would hide the footage but this shows no matter how much experience WE ALL make mistakes 🤦♂️ & have frustrating BAD Days.
exactly! that's what im sayin. I much rather this content then the typical build video. way more interesting.
Imagine having brands send you so many high-end components that you even forget they're there in the first place
I'm very impressed that you kept the video up despite human error in some parts. It shows we all make mistakes, and noone is perfect. We all have issues at some point. It's amazing to see you own it, and still push through. Great job Kyle.

Very well said.
I don't see why he woudnt keep the video up, unless ocd.
@@OT-tn7ci Because not everyone would be comfortable with showing vulnerability in a situation like this. You can see the struggle, and I am complimenting him for keeping it real.
Echoing the general consensus: this video is much more useful as it makes it extremely clear why you shouldn't mix and match PSU modular cables. That being said, I'm glad all that was lost were a couple PSUs and you're unharmed. Be safe Kyle!
I had no clue this was an issue and am now making sure my old cables are not bouncing around anymore!
Well, and a motherboard
Mixing cables won't do anything, it only pulls the power it needs. As long as they are from quality manufacturers
You could’ve just said don’t mix and match psu cables just because theyre psu cables💀
@@drunkhusband6257 obviously not true. We just watched a video where mixing cables just killed 2 power supplies and a motherboard. Components only pull what they need when using the correct cables. If you connect 2 rails together creating reverse polarity there's likely going to be some sparks, smoke, and dead parts which is probably what happened here.
Lyle is never gonna let you live this one down😂

i can only imagine how many slow people actually fall for this comment above mine^ the world lacks so much common sense🤦♂
The issue is we can't really afford going that wrong because we don't have a tone of spare parts lying around.
We pick our parts every time carefully while calculating out budget and built our PC with all hope and enthusiasm that everything will go well. I have built 4 PC's for myself and thankfully everything went well until now although the last one did take some troubleshooting until i got to see the bios loading on the screen. Funny enough i keep them so long every time i built a PC is like a new experience. My first was with ribbons going to hard drives and no USB etc.
Now am about to built a system for a friend(and a new one for me a few months later, waiting for those new releases) and am nervous. He has no idea about PC's and i told him what to buy for his needs and budget and he trusted me to built it for him. What if a part is faulty, what if i mess up something?
I hope none of his parts are damaged like this motherboard's memory slot was.
If i killed a platinum 1000W PSU i will be crying for three whole days. I do keep a decent but cheap PSU as an extra though just so i will be able to troubleshoot.
But that is basically my PSU that was in my older system and i kept it just to have it in case of an emergency. I also have an extra 1050Ti after i replaced it in my system with a 1650.
But that is all the extra parts i have for troubleshooting. Don't have extra CPUs and motherboards if anything goes wrong.
I love how real you are in this, everyone makes mistakes and its ok. I know its not a cheap mistake but it can happen to anyone. Glad you posted this one. We all have those days or weeks.😁

Bro, with you having like 5-6 different PSU's out on your desk, I was scared another psu cable would get mixed up. I'm going to say a bit of organization would help you not make goofy pc building mistakes
lmaooo so true
his desk is as messed up as his upload schedule
I've never seen anyone with as many troubleshooting issues as him. It's not a coincidence or bad luck anymore
Kind of think that was part of the reason for posting? Lol
Tbh ... This sounds like projection
I've learned to NEVER mess around when it comes to the PSU and its cables, so I always keep the cables separate and only use the ones with the PSU.
When I built my first PC I found a small 4 pin plug on the PSU that was the perfect fit for the socket labelled "CD audio" on the back of my CD drive, so I took a chance that it was the correct place to put it and plugged it in. This was back in the days before the internet was widely available and my PC building knowledge was minimal and just came from magazines where you only get maybe 1 or 2 pictures if you were lucky, so I really didn't know any better. When I turned on the PC it sounded like someone had let the air out of a tyre for a second as the wires plugged into the CD audio almost instantly vaporised the plastic coating on them and a smoke plume emerged in its place. I was absolutely terrified, I had put my entire life savings into that PC and thought it had literally gone up in smoke, but fortunately I was quick to kill the power, unplugged that cable that went to the CD audio, used sticky tape to cover the bare wires, and when I turned on the computer again to my surprise and delight everything was perfectly fine, even the CD drive (which still played audio CDs). But the terror I experienced will never be forgotten so I wont take chances with PSUs ever again.
I don't know how that PC survived the abuse my ignorance had put it through, I had overclocked the Celeron 433 to 488mhz without appropriate cooling, and when I cleaned it out for the first time (to fix the clogged fans on the GPU) I had also cleaned off the thermal compound on the GPU (TNT2 M64) and not replaced it and continued to use it for years, it wasn't until my next PC that I found out what thermal compounds were and realized that mistake. It was a great PC that was rock solid and I never had any issues playing games on it despite all my mistakes :)

The best RUclips videos are the troubleshooting/problem analysis ones.
Well i think the trouble shooting went off the rails once he tried plugging the HDMI into the motherboard. He already had trouble putting the system together ( i mean c'mon man you are using a mobo with a bad ram slot). He should have completely taken the system down and rebuilt piece by piece. this is a video on how not to trouble shoot a problem. i mean he did figure it out eventually. Most of us who build our own systems dont have endless pieces of computer parts to shift around and test.
@@pdureska7814 How was it off the rails at that step? He was switching to using integrated graphics as opposed to his dedicated GPU. A pretty logical troubleshooting step at that moment.
@@TheCausticbeat i agreed with that but i meant after that it went off the rails. Really not a very organized logical way to figure out the problem. He should have pulled the system and breadboarded it when the integrated graphics not working. Plus he started with a defected Mobo to begin with. Just not the way i would have attacked the problem.

Many many years ago when I delved into the PC hardware world, I wondered what the red switch in the back of my PSU did. I had my computer case opened while I turned on the computer and saw sparks. One bad parts leads to another bad part leads to a new part leads to new part becoming a bad part leading to giving up and getting wasted.
This actually goes REALLY well hand-in-hand with the current topic for the modular cables for psu's from different sources since it seems to be some what semi-hot. This video + recent video from GN what talks about the psu myths is just really good combination to actually show what the f* happens when you try to use different cables. Perfect timing! And by far strech this has much much more insight than just "let's build pc and nothing goes wrong!" vids.

This is a gem of a video. I learn more from these "Fail" videos than any other type. I've put "Fail" in quotes because it's only a "Fail" if you don't try again and learn from your observations, which is exactly what you did. And yes, Ice-cream definitely helps!
Probably my toughest PC problem to figure out was when i had a p67 ASUS Sabretooth motherboard with a i5 2500k that kept resetting. Like every few min. I tried everything i could think of and just threw it in a junk drawer with screwdrivers and other junk. I got a new Motherboard and CPU and everything was fine for like 2 years. I was lazy and didn't hook up the case reset switch to the motherboard. THAT i figured out later was the problem. The case reset switch was bad. The ASUS p67 board and i5 2500k still work to this day even after sitting in a junk drawer.
As a side story with that mobo/cpu combo. I was playing World of Warcraft one night and the framerate dropped to like 2fps for a few seconds and the PC shutdown. I looked over and the stock INTEL heatsink FELL OFF and was sitting on my GPU backplate. That didn't even cause any problems after putting the thing back together.
*slow clap* Well done sir. You actually made me feel better about myself with this one.
it’s always the dumbest shit that makes ur pc take a shit. like mine was a bad riser pci 3.0 cable :/
@@moisescarrillo6991 Oh i know. I think my first computer build I fried the mother board.

BEWARE of this!!
I'm actually really happy you didn't scrap this video and stuck through it to share with us. I feel like mixing up cables like that, mixed in with all the items you receive on the regular, is gonna be hard to not make a mistake. But don't beat yourself for being human 😀 I love your video man and I've learned a lot from watching you. Thanks for learning me stuffs all the time!

@@bonhominom You got it. Don't forget to report it.
This is actually a good video that you kept it up. I had no idea about those cables not being universal.
I appreciate this video a great deal. Thanks Kyle, for sharing, even if it did sting a bit. Great learning experience!

LMAO, that scene where you're crying eating icecream. I've been there before, after blowing up my GTX 680 Lightning which was $550 at the time. Amazingly, and don't tell MSI this, I RMA'd it pretending like it wasn't from my accidental +600mV to the core, and they SENT ME A GTX 780 LIGHTNING as the GTX 680 was 4 years old (5 year warranty) and they didn't have any left in their warehouses. SO I got a free upgrade from literally the most devestating moment in my entire PC experience.
I think it's good to still post these videos. It helps people avoid similar issues. But mostly it helps people not feel hopeless and dumb when they do mess up. We all do stupid stuff, and with media today they make everything look like they get it perfect the first and everytime they do anything.
Thanks Kyle. Showing failure is as important as success. a) shows what not to do b) gives newbies 'permission' to fail and not feel bad.
I heard the clicking noise and I think you threw a rod on that PC bro. Time for a new engine.
I did this same thing actually. On my first ever build which I started in November of 2020 I initially got a an EVGA 750 GA PSU with the idea that it would be enough to power a 3080. I of course couldn't get a 3080 and the MSRP of a 3090 was about what scalpers were selling 3080s for, so I got a 3090 instead. Whenever the 3090 would hit over 1800mhz the system would shut down. I eventually I figured out it was a problem with the PSU being unable to handle the draw of the 3090 so I upgraded to a 1000w PSU. I'll freely admit I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff and had no idea that the pin layouts are different on all PSUs. I saw that the connections were all the same on the back of the new PSU as they were on the old one. I thought that was great since that meant I wasn't going to have to undo all the wiring I had initially done. Just unplug the cables from the old PSU, then plug them into the back of the new one. I did just that, closed everything up and pressed the power button only to hear a pop from the new PSU and see the telltale smoke of a significant sized spark. I freaked out and powered everything down. I asked a more knowledgeable friend what could have gone wrong after describing what I'd done. He laughed and told me I was an idiot and that you need to use the manufacturer's included cable even if other cables look the same on both ends. Nothing was seriously damaged, except that I burned out one of the CPU ports on the back of the new PSU. Lesson learned.
This was really refreshing to see , wish more creators released videos like this
This a great troubleshooting video/now saga. Cant wait for part 3. Keep em coming. Personally kept me interested and entertained. It's the real frustration and trying to keep a level head and figure it out for me. You'll feel satisfied when it is all working and the build is complete.

@@tomiyadude246 ty tho I appreciate it
This is why we only modular cables that come from the PSU you bought! This is my worst nightware tho! That's why any lose cables I see I just toss them. Not worth my whole system, although i'd do a continuity test if I did wanna keep them. We all make mistakes thank you for showing people why it's a bad idea to try use diff cables from diff PSU's
i put a masking tape label on every psu cable i have with the details of the PSU they go to when i put them in storage
@@Bobis32 Best way about it, hopefully companies will stop this oh oh oh I do it better. Nonsense & just come to a settlement to have one pin layout across the board. Easy PCB design ect, no need for speical PCB designs cause they'll all be the same LAYOUT wow imagine that. For me this should have been done 10 years ago!
First world problem: When you have too much hardware and you are unable to organize them and use power supply cables from another power supply model.
exactly
I mean they all look the same lol.
awesome vid, love it. Didn't watch your vids in a while you look awesome. Keep up the good work!
Man. You are just not having any luck dude. Loved the video. Hope you have success next video.
As someone who just did a high end build ($2400 Radeon Pro w6800 and i9-10850k) in a SFF case that booted and worked without issue....I feel you.
*Wait*
It’s so fun to watch Kyle fail miserably and troubleshoot.
Totally enjoyed this video, it really made my day. We have ALL been there. (Some just don't admit it.) Kudos to you for making the video, showing what can go wrong, owning up to the mistakes that were made, and honestly showing the frustration and aggravation that can occur when things don't go as planned. Glad you posted the video and didn't trash it as you mentioned you were tempted to do. Thank you for taking us along with you on this ride. Looking forward to future videos to see how this saga continues.

I'm sending all of the hugs through the internet. Everyone has that one system where everything goes wrong. This is most definitely that one.
Hey Kyle, you should invest in a PSU tester, this would save you the guessing and testing time, and to help you not to damage more hardware. I like your channel and your content, but by now you should be using more testing tools for simplify your work and to show others how to troubleshoot and to stop guessing. Good for context but bad for teaching those who want to start working on PCs. Still like you channel, keep it up and real.
I second your suggestion... I cringed when he put more hardware at risk, plus a simple PSU tester will immediately tell you if the PSU is bad or not (unless it only fails under load, of course).
I actually used a Thermaltake PSU tester to diagnose my previous ROG THOR 1200W PSU when it went bad (and you can also use the tester to make sure you're not using the wrong cables for that PSU).

This is great content! Even though it is not meant to be a troubleshooting video, I think this has shown us that anything (I mean anything) can go wrong. I love how you're not afraid to find the issue(s) with everything. It's also nice to have parts to throw at the build. LOL! Regardless, great content. I'd like to see an end video explaining everything that went wrong along the way and what the end result was to remedy the issues. We learn from our mistakes by making mistakes and watching others make those mistakes. Keep up with the great content!

great vid Kyle love these videos
A lot of content creators are having a ton of issues with their PC builds. I'm curious if the chip shortage strain is causing a lack of QC to get them out the door.
you bring up a good point
This was not a QC issue.
@@gameface6091 after just finishing the video I know this now. But my inquiry still stands on how has quality control been affected by the chip shortage and trying to ramp up production to meet such a massive demand. I went to my local car dealership and they have 4 cars on the lot haha.
Man, the amount of issues you've had since moving into this space. Have you had an electrician check if you have dirty power? Poor/inconsistent power delivery to the building could be the cause of quite a few of your hardware dying issues.

Having a cheap power supply tester could come handy, Surprise this guys don't have one by now
Even though that board is done for i would love to have that thing it costs more than my own rig 😂
thank you for changing your mind about uploading this, i was having a blast, great video xD
been there man. Working on something for so long and having issues I start making dumb mistakes. Don't beat yourself up to hard.
Honestly I'm super happy that I saw this because I never knew that PSU cables weren't interchangeable but now I do know. I've only built one PC so I only have one PSU and never would have run into that issue so lucky me I guess? Great video though and even though you might be frustrated with yourself it was still an outstanding video, especially for troubleshooting, thank you Kyle.
Yeah, modular psu have unique pinouts per manufacturer... There is no standard right now. It is not like sata cables.
I realized this when looking at mod cables in cablemod and it was like we need to know the brand... And i thought that was ridiculous so i did a little research and was like ooooohh
I'm certain it's a Bitwit TRADEMARK to have something go wrong at some point with every PC build he has uploaded.
Keep it going Kyle! By far the best content! :D And GL with that system :)
