Why Final Fantasy XVI Could Be Game of the Year Potential

  • Ever since I saw the Game Awards trailer for Final Fantasy XVI, I've been thinking of how my excitement for it continues to soar. While I am not trying to suggest everyone start going full hype-train mode with this game, I do think Final Fantasy XVI has some game of the year potential, given everything we've been shown thus far. Then again, the last Final Fantasy game to get me this hyped with its trailers turned out to be one of the most divisive entries in the franchise. So, time will tell. But, for now, it's fun to speculate a little.

Being a long time FFXIV player, I always loved Yoshi P's approach into marketing his game. He never show or say anything unless it's the right time or if he's 1000% sure of the product or else he'll be the first one to be disappointed of himself. He hates teasing fans and worst case scenario end up disappointing them. The Endwalker expansion delay was a testament to that and man even if I was upset with the delay I can't be mad at him seeing how he was completely heartbroken in breaking the bad news to the community and it's only for a two week delay because of some QA tasks that he thinks still needs to be done. And I am happy that this is also the path they are taking with FFXVI. I've heard we will not hear anything official from the game for a while after The Game Awards trailer and will market the game at full force starting March. That's good enough for me. Way better than continuously getting teased and promised and then feel utterly disappointed with the end product.

You should play FFXIV. Shadowbringers and Endwalker expansions are easily the best story I experienced in gaming, and XVI is made by the same team. Especially with saying that you enjoy darker themes in stories. The start, ARR, is really slow. But once you get to Heavensward, trust me, it elevates itself to another level. Yes it even surpassed FFVII for me. Specifically in Shadowbringers and Endwalker. After hearing this video, I have a feeling you'd fall in love with it.

One thing to also note that FF16 will be the first in the series to record voice work in English first then other language such as Japanese later. This means lip sync, gestures, and general mannerism should be aligned to English speakers. We have seen many awkward cutscene from Final Fantasy before whether we can agree or not. We shouldn't see any of those in FF16.

FFXV could have been the "return to form" Final Fantasy if not only for its mismanagement and meddling of executives. It was so messy that we didn't get the real ending and instead was locked in a novel (in a freaking novel!!!) and many important parts of the story that was put behind in a DLC. Square Enix really messed up on that game. In fairness to FFXV, they actually got the "spirit" of Final Fantasy, wherein the previous games were a mix of darker story funny moments and goofy dialogue. For me, that element captivated me in playing Final Fantasy from FF6 to FF9 so its truly regrettable on what happened to FFXV. Fortunately, with the release of FF7R, and even the release of SOP: FF Origin (even though it didn't result to great sales), and now with the trailers of FF16, it seems they are slowly coming back to form. I hope it isnt always dark though because I hate games that are trying too hard to be "dark". I'm quite positive though because FF14 was far from it. Hopefully the executives this time won't meddle too much and let the developers be creative enough to produce a good game.

I love final fantasy, but after XV square now has a lot riding on this. I’m not nearly as pessimistic about the franchise as many people are. I’ve chosen to place my faith in yoshida because I’ve experienced what he can do. If this game fails to impress and dazzle ….I just don’t see a way forward for the brand. This has to be more than just a good game or an alright game, it has to do more than just be playable. With this one, if it fails, it’ll mean that I, personally, will have lost my faith in square Enix completely, and I know I’m not alone in this. All that being said, and I am fully onboard the hype train, I just feel like this will be special for some reason. I truly hope so, I don’t want final fantasy to fail and disappear. Let’s hope against despair guys, this is going to be amazing, it simply can’t be anything less than that.

Also, it doesn't have a decade's worth of hype, mystery, or intrigue built up nor is it a reimagining of one of the most iconic games in history. It's only been 2 and a half years since the initial trailer and all the other trailers were only released months ago. This is by far the most ethical FF marketing I have witnessed. For god sakes... we don't have turn based combat in main FF titles for MORE THAN 20 YEARS!!! Could you please let it go?? The industry has moved on and if you love that genre go play that specific genre because there are still games that have that on its core material. I have played every single FF main games, FF isnt about medieval, crystal, swords, turn based, its about having a great FANTASY narrative with a different world and scenario for each one of them, stop comparing them, analyze each one as a unique title.

You and the "fanbase" search for trends to have your opinion, funny that you talk bad about XIII and XV because its common to do so, when in reality a game like VIII share some similar flaws. You don't have the courage to talk different from what reddit has to say, funny because XII was famous for being bad talked and now its the opposite, the trend is to love it. Thats a total BS, just look over 2008 foruns to see what I mean. You people rely too much on nostalgia and forget about looking the quality of the game on its current era

Believe it or not, XV is one of my favorite FF games, even with its issues. The XIII trilogy has objective flaws as a series of games, but I enjoy them all immensely. XV was mostly disappointing to me due to how much Square took a hatchet to the original version of it. I still found a way to love the finished product. When and if I get the time to do proper reviews for XIII and XV, people will probably get upset with me for how positive those reviews will undoubtedly be. For the record, Noctis and Lightning are tied for my favorite FF protagonist, despite any of their character flaws. So, while I can understand where the wording in this video might be confusing, I can assure you and anyone else my reviews and vids are honest thoughts and opinions. I don't go for that whole follow the leader style of content creation. I make videos on things I like, love or have an interest in speaking about. Anyway, I respect that you want to defend something you like, and I appreciate you taking time to watch my video.

Sad to see Square continue to treat PC, Xbox, and Switch players like second class citizens. They are seeking short term gains (with exclusivity contracts with Sony) over long term success (by nurturing and growing a playerbase on Xbox and Switch, consistently). Sega has started to really push to recapture the Xbox market. Yakuza was finally brought over to Xbox. Now, Persona has followed suit. Square should look at the bigger picture of growing the audience.

Firstly, ff is my favourite franchise, that's exactly why I can't stand ff16, it doesn't deserve the ff title, it's shallow, no skill tree, boring combat, no party. Yes square Enix try and change each ff title and add new things but when that entirely detracts from what the franchise is all about and a title is so far removed from the staples of final fantasy then it's a big no for me.
Even as a stand alone game, If it wasn't a ff title I would say it has some redeeming features but game of the year??? Don't make me laugh.
When you compare ff16 ro let's say baldurs gate 3, the latter moves the franchise forward where the former moves it's franchise backwards.
Ff16 is bland and boring, it's faff decorated with flash as the cinematics and graphics are great but if you decorate a turd with glitter, it's still a turd.
