Lasiodora parahybana Husbandry and Feeding

- Опубликовано: 31 окт 2015
- A husbandry and feeding video for the ever-popular Lasiodora parahybana or "Salmon bird eater". My son, Roane, helped out with camera duties this time around so that I could do some feeding while I spoke.
Just got my LP in the mail. I love your videos, they are very informative and helpful.
Congratulations! What size? :)
Its a 1/2 inch sling from Jamiestarantulas. USPS took forever getting it here.
seriously loving the vids! also following your blog. thank you so much for taking the time to educate us!
Thanks so much for the kind words!!!! :)
Thanks Big Tom.
I am comparing nites with my L.D... Pretty much exactly the same in all respects with regard to husbandry and care.
This has been a big help to me ..
Thanks.
I have an LD as well, and I keep her the exact same way. They are quite hardy overall! :) You're most welcome. :)
Mine is probably about 3 inches now... I got it in February and it's molted twice in 2 months!! I was shocked. The thing is def an eating machine...I absolutely love it!
Man, it's growing like a weed! :)
I wish somebody would drop a hamburger on me when I was trying to sleep!
+RaginMoose100 Ha! I'd totally eat it, who am I kidding.
Tom Moran I would be so mad! I would throw the freaking hamburger right back at them! 😈😂😂
I had bought a c. Elegans sling that was 1/6", a Vaejovis spinigerus 1.5" scorpion and the seller gave me a l. Parahybana 1/4" freebie.
So I went from 1 arachnid to 4 and I want to get some more at the CRBE

That's some good advice I got in... I think it was another one of your videos: Start with a spider that gets to about 5 or 6 inches because you'll be surprised just how much spider that is, especially when it is cranky. So for a beginner looking for a massive spider, I would say they might be disappointed at the thought- but they'll probably find that 8 inches of spider is plenty for most anybody's purposes. Basically anything short of saddling it up and riding it into town. xD
That was me! I honestly don't thing that people appreciate just how large a 8" spider is! They're BIG. haha
@@TomsBigSpiders Right? I think my oldest was around 6 or 7 inches before she passed away and it's a good thing she was a teddy bear because on the rare occasions that she was in a foul mood, that was a handful, for sure. She wasn't massive, but she knew she could throw her weight around a bit.
Hi Tom I pay absolute attention to everyone of your husbandry videos and applying what I learn from you is both effective and keeps my confidence up when taking care of my T's. Your the best thanks again Tom.
Thanks so much, Brutus! That's awesome! :)
Thanks for this vid. I'm plotting my first sling order still and Swift's has these listed as a freebie atm (no clue if they will come November when i order or even where I'll order from for certain) but I remembered seeing this vid a bit back and came looking for it to decide if an LP would be a decent option for me. I'm thinking yeah could be a good option.
I've received a couple of these as freebies over the years. I don't think that you'll be disappointed if you get one. :)
My LP, aka Nightcore is not very skittish. He's one of the most laid-back Ts I have and he molted twice since I got him, once in December and again this past March.
Hi, Caitlyn! What size is he? My big girl is actually very chill now. I have another one (4" or so) that's a bit nuts. hahaha
Same all my ts are all calm even my regalis,I can handle her !
Thanks, Tom.
Thank YOU! :)
Thanks for a good video. Picking up my LP in a few days. What's one more to the collection, right? I'm a firm believer in reading all u can on a species before brining it home. Thanks for more knowledge! 🕷👍👏
Congrats on your new LP, Ann! Hahaha. Yup, that's pretty much my motto. ;)
awesome video was searching high and low for an l difficilis care video cant find one figured if go off lp husbandry
The care is identical. That said, I have an L. difficilis, so I could do a husbandry vid on her. :)
that woupd be awesome
Hi Tom, I got a LP from Jamie's in on 8-12-2017 its size is 1-1/4" I have it in one of Jamie's Juvenile Terrestrial enclosures with a cork bark hide and the ecoearth substrate and small water dish. It seems to be doing well and it ate a small mealworm 24 hours after I got it. It stays nicely in its little cork bark cave hide.
Congrats, Ed! I have a juvenile LP in one of those myself. :) They work great. Glad to hear that it's eating for you. :)
Tom Moran ty Tom
Thanks for the info, i think im ready for this.
Can you make a quick video shiwcase of your tarantula rack?
I hope you see my comment
Awesome! They are VERY easy to raise, so you'll be fine. And I'll be doing a tour of the new room soon. :)
@@TomsBigSpiders thanks a lot i got my lp just today as a very tiny sling
I purchased my LP sling on 5/24/2016. It was less than pea sized at the time of purchase. After its last molt on 1/28/2017 she/he has grown to 2.5 inches. Attacks prey like a tiger and only refuses food for a few days after a molt. She/he eats 1 adult cricket about every 3 to 5 days. I do keep the temps on the warm side though around 82-85F all the time and keep the substrate on the moist side. So far a great tarantula very easy to keep plus the colors are very nice and its always out in the open for viewing.
I think that's definitely the trick with these guys if you want the fast growth rates...you need to keep them warm. They are a wonderful species!
My sling borrows during the day, but have noticed shell come out when it's dark. When I get up for work and turn the light on it's on top of the soil but then runs for cover.
That's the best time to catch your burrowers out...just check them in the early morning hours when the lights have been off for a while! :)
Hi Tom, is this species moisture dependent? Would a mixture of coco and peat moss be good or just straight peat moss?
Hi, Royston! As slings, I would keep them a bit damp. However, once they put on some size, they do well with dry substrate and a water dish. Coco and peat would be great. Peat by itself works fine; it just gets very dusty when dry. I hope that helps!
Do you have a link to where I can purchase a tank like the clear one you show on the right side in the video? It looks really nice but I don't think I've ever seen one like that in stores or at expos
This is the same company with their newest version: www.ebay.com/itm/144827042340?hash=item21b85d4a24:g:150AAOSwPARjgQJ7&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4DWkKqkmpevhWjUhaKOvPl%2FXE9u8awldXMCB%2FdeKj4LIeN45cpdZwZ757vQihFT99owv7padNYmRonPebL2Uur30N2Yj%2BLBNiQBVGmRuYRUD3jN%2B6JzJ2QXGumeCfQoAUo7yb64TNVPJXTmvj0IGiFv%2FTh4%2BxUuTT29LHmumiUmgSK9ARdyE0sHpucKb0kvz%2FTkcM%2Fqgm2Ko75f7c2TTsD2ZLW6k8pl3gJnexY0waw8NoYcrP7ZE7HvqRgZFlcXHJlvbSpfYZLbaG0wf0RN0CYeDEXo9dLBJ2mi8wd8QvpYn%7Ctkp%3ABFBMlK-83s5i
This video made 5 years ago. How big are they now? If you still have them I have two LPs I got them when they where slings it's been over year now one is 5 to 6 inches and still growing hoping to reach 10 or 11 inches would be nice to see
The one in this video is around 8.5" or so. Mine were actually quite slow growing, but I know that others have reported faster growth rates.
I traded my male P. Irminia for 3 L.p. yesterday :D good to know they can be kept dry :)
If interested in pronunciation:
Las-ee-o-dor-a
Pa-ra-h-ee-baa-naa ;p
Romanic languages like to have every letter spelled lol
Wow, that's a great trade! Congrats. :) Yeah, mine have done great kept dry. I'll overflow the water dish at times, like when they are in premolt, but they don't seem to care either way.
And thanks!
Omg did you say the Ts can chew through the metal vents on the plastic clear enclosure you were talking about? You said you had to fix the metal air vents as they can chew through them lol 😮
Yes, this one chewed up two and right through one of them. I ended up replacing the ones on this enclosure with plastic.
Tom Moran OMG chewed right through it wow I had no idea they can chew right through metal or even plastic. Good video mate and I subbed 👍
I had heard that they could, but I didn't think that it was common. I'm not messing around with the wire vents anymore!
Hey Tom got a quick question. Do you use spring tails?
I've used isopods, but the I've yet to use springtails. I DID just order some, though! :)
Tom Moran OK I've never used them and was just going to ask if there worth messing with
what do you think would be an ideal enclosure size for an adult lp?
It honestly depends. Something around 12 x 24" would be a good place to start.
1 hatter in 3 years you rock bro
Shhhhhh...don't point that out. They'll all come running! hahaha. Thanks, buddy! :)
I have a 4" LP. Will scotts organic topsoil work?
I used that for a while without any issues. In fact, I think my LP is on it right now. :) Yes! :)
Tom, my LP is still about a 1/4-1/3" sling and it's just driving me nuts because it seems to only eat once a week, if that. It's really hard to tell if it has, unless I put meal worm pieces in a specific pattern and wait to see if they've moved. Do you know if young LP slings prefer any particular feeder over meal worms? I'm brand new to T's so this is perplexing. Only had this and my GBB about 3 wks. GBB eats like a fat Italian kid. LP, not so much. Thoughts?
Slings that small often fill up pretty quickly by eating larger meals. Some will only eat one large meal before going into premolt. Mine had no problem eating meal worms. I used to take a photo and see if it moved in the morning. haha
They could be eating fine, but it's just difficult to notice because of their small size.
@@TomsBigSpiders I had a chance to talk to Tanya yesterday. She said basically the same, although they sometimes might prefer a disabled roach that's still moving. But she also said, like your video, that they get big shiny butts before molts...guess what I came home to find last night?! Shiny hiney!
I asked too about a P. South Hispaniola today I saw on your Phorm. genus review, which FNT has...but my wife is saying no for now. 😢. But I'll let you know how the LP molt goes.
@@TomsBigSpiders I'm thinking it's temperature related. I bought a small space heater for their space and I try to keep the temp above 72 or better. Since I put it in there Saturday, they're both much more active and the LP has eaten twice in 3 days!
Also, update: you and Tanya totally sold me on the Phormictopus SH, and I pestered my wife until she caved. I have the PSH and a Nhandu Chromatus sling on the way!
@@TomsBigSpiders UPDATE: It molted Friday! Now if I can just get my GBB to follow suit...
Sigh...the slings and arrows of T husbandry. (See what I did there? 😄)
I find it odd how my 1/3" sling refuses any sort of food yet shows no other sign of premolt it won't scavenge either it's a lil bit worry some since it hasn't ate since I got it
How long have you had it? Has it burrowed at all?
When you offered it prekilled, what were you giving it? When they are that small, it's sometimes difficult to tell if they ate because the take so little.
Tom Moran I haven't noticed any movement of prekilled food it has its little starter burrow I made before putting it in. I have pin head crickets it ignores or run from its never sealed its burrow and is still active as ever no sluggishness at all
I recently raised a bunch of tiny Hapalopus sp. slings, and they gave me fits because I couldn't tell if they were eating or not. The only way I could tell for some of them is they would eventually molt. However, the behavior your describing doesn't sound like it's in premolt yet. How long have you had it?
Tom Moran it's been 10 days I believe. I mean I know they can go for awhile without food but for a sling this size and as active as it is just seems weird. If you'd like I csn email a pic and maybe you can see what I'm missing
The little ones still freak me out. hahaha. I was just going to say you could shoot me a photo. tomsbigspiders@outlook.com
My LP has grown to 6 inches in a year and few months
Wow, that is quite impressive.
What enclosure would you recommend for a bigger sized lp
Hi, George! I currently have mine in one that's about 9 x 9 x 24".
@@TomsBigSpiders lxwxh?
My 1" (ish) LP just covered all the walls and ventilation holes in her enclosure. Is this a sign it's too dry or there's too much sunlight?
It could just be that she's remodeling. I've had a lot of them cover things up as they make their homes their own. LPs do a LOT of digging and rearranging at that size. What is it in for a cage?
Tom Moran a large deli cup
My first LP sling did the exact same thing. She was always digging and covering up vent holes. I wouldn't read too much into it or worry. :)
Tom Moran ok thank u:)
I saw you were breeding some tarantulas do you sell them as well ?
Hi, Nicky! At the moment, I do not. I'm very selective in what I'm going to be breeding, and I'm probably going to be selling slings wholesale when I do. Unfortunately, when I looked into shipping for them, the cost was astronomical ($89 to send an 8 x 8" package to California via FedEx). That means someone buying a $15 sling would have to pay $89 to have it shipped. No one in their right mind would do that. haha
Did you look into signing up for fedex to become a member? Then from the more you ship the more price cuts you get. I was working logistics for a company we didn't ship that crazy amount of stuff but a decent bit , probably what you would ship selling T's in a year and we were getting 50% price cuts on all shipping, it would show us what the cost was then the cost with our discount plus FedEx ground a lot of time would suffice if the people buying are in 1000-1200 mile radius. Two day guaranteed delivery. California and the west cost in general if you live on the east coast is going to be expensive ( even with the 50% discount. ) LOL
I wonder how Tanya does FEDEX Priority Overnight to every customer. I guess she ships to the west coast she looses a bit but for every shipment not going to the west coast she gains a bit. Anyway you ever get into selling them, you need help wit the logistics of it let me know , there's got to be a way to move them at a good shipping rate, I could call some of my contacts and figure out the best prices for the best service. Ive been running warehouses and logistics operations since 2005
what would u keep a 1in sling in for a L.P
Hi, there! I would use a 16 oz deli cup until it hit about 2.5" or so. They're secure, easy to ventilate, and easy to procure (you can sometimes get them from the deli at Walmart). Jamie's Tarantulas also has some cool sling enclosures that are made from Amac boxes. If you're handy, you can buy one of the boxes and do it yourself. Hope that helps!
Tom Moran ok thank u
What size is that plastic container?
I think that it's 8" x 8" x 16". :)
I have both Lasiodora difficilis and Lasiodora parahybana. Is the husbandry the same for both species?
You should know if you have both.
It's a 1/4 inch
So, have 3 of these: 1 1/2" sling, 3 1/2" juve and a good 6-7" fairly sure adult female. Sling is growing pretty fast too. They are great eaters but my female likes to hang on side of enclosure or top of hide...unsure why tho. Anyways, love them and boy is female huge..def not to be held altho I have...which is why I know it should not be held, lol.
+Roy Rugani Jr HAHA! Yeah, if I were the handling type, mine would not make the list. lol It's a great species and wonderful "beginner giant." I used to think they were really fast growing, but I've found that my Phormictopus sp. spoiled me a bit. lol
Hi Tom, love you’re videos and your podcast thoroughly enjoy listening to it at work, definitely gets me through the day! Quick question, I recently got my first new world, an Adult female LP, kind of did things in reverse as she’s my 18th T 😅 anyway I’ve put her in a 10 gallon container, since she’s been in the last 3-5 days she’s spent 80-90% of her time up on the side of the container, any ideas what might be causing this behaviour?
Hello, Jos! Th ank you so much! Does she have a hide in her setup? What did you use for substrate? She could just be settling in. Let me know, and we can take if from there.
Tom, I think you were right she must have just been settling in as she’s opted to utilise the floor space now as opposed to the wall of the enclosure 😂 she does have a hide but I’ve yet to see her use it. She seems to have mellowed a bit though and has eaten so hopefully she’s alright 😊
I just drove from North Carolina to Illinois on vacation and stopped by a shop that just happened to have an adult female LP for sale. I’ve looked everywhere for them and it’s great that i finally got one. Unfortunately she’s in premolt and I’m worried a 14 hour drive home won’t do her good, I may have to buy a thin blanket to wrap her in on the way home tomorrow so she won’t bounce around to much. Still is a gorgeous spider!
Congrats! They are an incredibly tough species, so she'll probably be just fine. Just make sure she has water available. :)
Hey how long should i wait to feed after it bury itself?
Has it completely covered the entrance to its burrow? If so, wait until it opens back up. Right now, it's probably in premolt.
ruclips.net/video/1GSDCpM2mYo/видео.html
Tom Moran yes completely covered itself it ate 10 days ago and covered itself the next day
Usually, they do this when they are in premolt and want to be left alone. They will generally open up the burrow after they have molted, hardened, and are ready to eat. Sometimes, this can take a couple weeks or more.
wow a couple weeks ok thank you!! Love your videos... the l.p is my 4th tarantula and just ordered my 5th
I've had some spent months buried. My G. pulchripes slings would bury themselves for the entire winter (5 months). It used to TOTALLY freak me out. Now I'm used to it.
Thanks so much! It's an addictive hobby...be careful. ;)
Hey buddy! I know this if off topic to this species. But I have a L. Diff. I’m In process of a rehouse soon my young juvenile who just recently molted about a week ago. Now in regards to a wet or dry substrate. Which one can I use or what would be better for this particular LD. I use a combo of coco fiber/ peat moss & a little vermiculite. Is that fine to use buddy? Your honestly and info has helped out a lot and I appreciate that.. oh and should I cut of some ventilation areas of a mini critter keeper?
Hey, Michael! That combination sounds perfect. I used that exact same mixture for quite some time (until I realized my bag of peat was infested with mushroom spores!). The critter keepers have a lot of ventilation in the tops, so you may want to keep part of the substrate moist along with the water dish (especially in the winter when the furnace is running and drying out the air). I usually do this for my Lasiodora species until they hit 3" or so. That said they are VERY hardy and will still do well dry with a water dish. I hope that helps!
Tom Moran thanks buddy
If you do decide to sell slings from this species plz keep me in mind.
Hi, Debbie! I sure will. :)
Hey Tom do u think I'd be ok using a larger size water dish if it's filled with gravel rather than the bottle cap if the sling is 1 1/4-1 1/2"?? Thanks
Hi, Ian! What size dish were you thinking? That should work, as long as it's shallow. It's VERY tough for them to drown.
Can you please explain me what "husbandry" means in the hobby?
Hello, Pana! Husbandry is basically just a fancy word for "care" or how you care for them and set them up.
Is this hard to keep in the uk?
Hello! It shouldn't be. :)
Can i keep my spider on a diet of mealworms, grubs, and roaches? One of the things I really dont want is hopping, chirping crickets.
Yes, meal worms and roaches work fine! I actually feed mine Dubia roaches now, as the adults are a good size for them. :)
❤👍🕷🇨🇦
**Sorry for commenting on an older video** I was recently at a reptile expo looking for a fancy leopard gecko for my fiance and the same gentleman was selling L. Parahybana slings for 8 bucks. -I hate spiders- So I bought one! It's a quarter of an inch, tiny. The guy selling them told me to cut up meal worms or crickets and put them in there. But would flightless fruit flies be better? I understand you're busy so I thank you for your time if you respond.
Hello and congrats! The LP is an awesome species, and a sling was one of my first. He actually gave you great advice. The flightless fruit flies (in my opinion) are more trouble than they are worth. I recently raised a batch of tiny Hapalopus slings, and I used cut up meal worms as well. They work great, provide a better meal, and are easier to deal with. Hope that helps! :)
Tom Moran thanks a bunch for the quick response and the advice!
My pleasure...good luck! :)
How do these guys do as Slings?
They do great. This is a VERY hardy spider, even as a slings. Just be prepared for them to burrow and hide when they are in premolt.
Thanks for the reply. I really want to get a Euathlus sp red but I cannot find them as adults or slings! Any tips or advice?
hey man, what was that fastest growing tarantula?
+Sherlock Holmes Hey, there! I've found that Phormictopus species and Pamphobeteus species tend to grow MUCH faster overall.
A good, very fast-growing step up from the LP would be a Phormictopus cancerides or "Haitian Brown".
Tom Moran oh cool, thanks man
No disappointment..my famale is 9.5..
Hello, Holden! Wow...a big girl! How long have you had her?
@@TomsBigSpiders well over 7 years..
But im dissapointed with my g pulchra. Shes 9 years old and still only 5". 😁 Keep it up Tom..im enjoying your vids!
Do you have a photo ?
sadly the LP is already gone.
Hey Tom, I got my LP un sexed Feb 16 and she was around 3" dls, after a recent moult she is now a good 7" and maybe 3 years old, so I'm hopeful for her reaching 10" by the time she reaches adult hood in 3 years time!
Hey, John! Man, I have some of the slowest growing LPs in the world. hahaha. You'll definitely have to keep me updated on her growth!
Tom Moran will do 😁
damn chewed thru the screen!?!?! thats crazy!!
Yup, right through it. Both my LP and my L. itabunea chewed right through them. I'd heard that terrestrials could do that, so I should have known better. I've learned my lesson...no more screen vents! :)
+Tom Moran lol thats a bummer thats the kind of vents i was gonna use for all of my t's i like how they look...any other suggestions for vents? other than burning holes...if thats what i have to do i will but i dont like the look of that....just terrestrials?
I have a video up somewhere where one chewed completely through it. I was VERY lucky I didn't lose my T to that one.
The arboreals supposedly don't chew, so if you're housing arboreals, you're all set. As for what I use now, I've found plastic ones that work just as well at roundvents.com . Here are links to a couple things you can use.
roundvents.com/2-round-black-plastic-vent-PLBL-100-2.htm
roundvents.com/25-round-black-plastic-vent-PLBL-100-25.htm
roundvents.com/25-round-white-plastic-vent-PLW-100-25.htm
I've ordered from this place several times, and the shipping is reasonable and they ship fast. I used this type to replace the screen vents in my acrylics and to vent some of my Sterilite cages.
Hope that helps!
So they will chew thru metal but not plastic?? Ive been looking to order from round vents thank you for the links!! And once again appreciate the help!! I have a question im going to get my amac boxes from containerstore.com...im going to get m.balfouri, gbb a.versicolor thinkin salmon pink birdeater cuz theyre only 12 bucks and will get a free chillean rose hair for a freebie...i found clear plastic shoe boxes measured at 13×7 1/2×8 1/4
..im sure these would be fine for the terrestrials as far as space provides enough depth for substrate...what about the a.versicolor?
Im sure the birdeater would eventually need more room than thus but id think it would be a suitable size final enclosure for the other terrestrials
pls turkey translate
Sorry! Let me see if I can do it...
Have you ever thought about adding low light vegitation for maximum oxygen per cage?
I'll eventually get into some bioactive enclosures. Yes, I've thought about it.
I heard you talking about how in most cases spiders only get up to, it maximum 8 inches. My question is, could that be simply because they do not get enough oxygen compared to what day would be getting out in their natural habitat. If I'm not mistaken these are rainforest tarantula.
Females grow bigger
Grow bigger than what? Males?
I have a 9inch female.!!...if I can post a video of me handling her I will.
Yes, absolutely! I would LOVE to see her! :)
Tom Moran I will post a video tomorrow of her!!..she's an absolute monster!! I would say she's a good 9 inches plus!!..she is settling in at the moment and tucking into a pinkie mouse as we speak.
