Hi Friends! It was an absolute pleasure chatting with David! Please leave a ton of questions for both of us on today's video! We'll respond to as many of them as we can!
Warren hi! David hi! I do watch your videos, especially those where touring to studios and even more talking to world's top engineers/mixers/masterers. I had a pleasure watching one of David's videos, a go-thru of one of PA plugins when it came out. Oh well, what I saw then was something that is still stuck with me whenever David "reviews" something. Not a level of expertise really! I'm guessing a learnt by hard material more than anything. David is probably super nice guy and all but just not the level I thought he would be or or should have been! But, if I look at it from the other angle, he's way better than 99,99% of soooo many reviewers online so - more power to both of you guys!
Yeah, actually they're the very best 2 channels on YT for those still learning to mix. You hear a lot of stuff on YT and the basics you'll eventually learn from whatever source, but those two combined have given solutions to problems I had for years and got me out of many impasses down the road in my mixes. Still use their tricks every day.
David seems like such a great guy to work with. I've been following him for a while at MixbusTV, and learned a lot. Very talented and nice guy who clearly loves his work. Fantastic to see Warren and David get together here :)
Please say "Welcome" to David for me Warren. Your website and Dadid's Mixbus were the first video websites I started watching four year back when I got back into songwriting and mixing. Thanks to the both of you for everything you've shared that helped me grow.
I was listening to “You Found Me” long before I ever got into music production and only recently I found that you, Warren, were a part of it. Mind blown!

David is fantastic, have the new PLAP lesson featuring him, and it's awesome! Thank You WARREN and PLAP for bringing such great material and Teachers to us! David is a beast with Vox Processing/mixing!

Just setting levels and organizing 100+ tracks takes the better part of a day when there’s not much direction from the producer (who is often a band member). But it is what it is. I agree that in many cases I end up not using 20-25% of the tracks, sometimes more.
Great Video Guys....Haven't actually seen Mixbus TV. Going to need to catch up. Also with the saturation discussion, always wondered why DAWs just don't have that built in.....ie if you go over a certain db, it will kick in a limiting/saturation effect similar to tape.

You and David are the only mixing and mastering channels I love. Give me your opinion between Ren Vox and CLA Voice plugins, if you don't mind of course. Thanks
I suppose it depends on what the tracks are. If it’s BVs that grouped to a stereo fader then it could 32 tracks, just like they would be on tape if bounced together. However, of its 200 different ideas then that’s a completely different story
Hi I am not the same David, but will chime in. If you go steep HP by default you lose a lot of signal, specially if you are recording analog stuff. Sometimes this is good, sometimes is not. I adjust my filters carefully, prefer to cut in the analog domain in a selective way. 2 problems to take into acount: First, you want to be able to listen what's going on down there, so you need monitors or headphones that can reproduce deep and accurate enough, plus a controlled room in the case of monitors. Second, listening to the lower frequencies is an acquired skill, and it takes time to develop. The more accurate your listening environment, the faster your brain will pick up.
Hey warren. Just wanted to say thanks for doing what you do! I’m just diving into recording my metal band in my home studio and I’ve learned so much about everything from you in a short time you sir are awesome!!
Hey guys. I finished my first production ever. The artist LOVES it but some of the original band members are really confused by the work I did in post with the artist. I was given creative liberty by my artist and put in long hours. It sounds really big with instrumentation they have never had live so some of the feedback I got back from them was a bit deflating. Any advice on how to deal with that from a producers standpoint? I mean I think its great and fully believe that in time they will too.
MixbusTV - definitely. It is tricky in that I loved that the artist enjoyed what I did. The band members are friends of hers that helped out or are loosely available to play out etc. Its their comments that made me question myself I guess and this was the premise of my question. Being new, naturally question my decisions and ear.
It can depend a lot on the relationship among these artists and musicians. Sometimes, for instance, a female artist has to abandon the "band" aspect of her project because of issues in these relationships. The desire to be part of a successful project is understandable, but it has to be earned. They should be warned, that often it can be their last project for a longer time, if they mess it up too much. But there will be more and more satisfying projects, when consent can be achieved, and the best contributions prevail over ego. It is difficult and perhaps uncalled for the engineer to say that, better it comes from a serious manager.
Innovation can be risky, and many times the artist herself has to bear the biggest part of that risk, but also will enjoy the success, and experience the challenging learning curve. Decisions should keep this in mind.
MC Solar, Jazzmatazz, Guru??? I didn't expect you guys to talk hip hop culture as well. Just shows well rounded character. Great interview. David is an amazing engineer and highly informative. Great channels.

David teaching is pure gold, so i will be attending the course too. One question though: will the content be available after the live event? I am in Europe and time frame is a bitch.
Very cool. I’m interested to hear his mixes. Just got the r-bass (thanks Warren). Does make the bass guitar sound better for sure. I put it on my toms. Seems to give them more body.
So, I can only afford to buy one (1) new plate reverb PI. I have heard great things from youz, about the Rare Signals Transatlantic Plate Reverb ($149) and the UVI Plate ($129). Which is the must have???? Why ???
Another great video. Yeah, back in the day we had 24 tracks, or 48. I'm producing electronic music now and my aim is to have as few tracks as possible. Cliche: less is more. If you need more than a couple of bass drums, you're are starting with the wrong sounds. Another pet peeve is multiple plug-ins on the same sound. Like three different EQ's, three compressors and a limiter all on one bass, or synth lead.
Hi David, I bought the course, I don't listen to Hip-hop usually but this song sounds really great! Could we get the Lyrics sheet, please? This would help, not only to follow the incredible flow, but also to be sure of some words (my mother tongue is French) that may inspire me for deciding on FX and edits of my own. Thanks! Daniel

Haha yes, Danny! That was from Halloween a couple of years ago!
Hi warren! I was wondering what the difference was between an effects chain on the master bus in a mix, and the process of mastering.
Thanks!
Daniel
