That first one is a nice big basil plant! A complete basil bed with different varieties - wonderful :)

"Very important"! basil is a cross-pollinating plant. If someone is trying to strictly grow a particular variety of basil the pollen from one basil will mix with the other and create a new hybrid in the seeds. Therefore isolation of the plant(s) from other similar family members is required to isolate the breed. Also if one is searching for a new flavor/aroma or both, the basil is a perfect plant for experimenting with. I accidentally came across this info when one of my basil plants produced seeds to a plant unlike itself. Then I realized it was a mix of the two different basils I had side by side. I now have 30 different varieties of basils, most are hybrids, that smell and taste wonderful. One of them could easily be mistaken for black liquorish. As always thanks for your videos Mr John and I hope this information was helpful to anyone whom needed it. :)

Hey I don’t know if you are are ever going to see this comment but I want to say Thank you. Thank you for this information because I want to get my hands on African Blue Basil which is a cross between opal basil and basil olicendum (or something like that) but the thing is being isolated in an igloo (Canadian heeheehee and no, I don’t actually live in an igloo) with most nurseries around not carrying my exotic plant needs (I actually have a PHD but by PHD I mean Plant Hoarder Disorder but it is otherwise known as CPCD or compulsive plant collector disorder and now when it is too rainy as today (yes I live in a rainforest that finally got some rain after a long hot summer...aka, Vancouver, BC) I have both the advantage of watching John and the disadvantage because he does awesome videos and link ones (and according to a company in New Zealand selling composts has brought them lots of business) but he also feeds my desire to have more plants like a bartender greedy for tips would supply an alcoholic. However, John is forgiven because he has no idea of this addiction he feeds but back you. I am so happy you supplied this information because if I cannot find the right basil, I will just plant different varieties, collect the seeds and plant until I get the African Blue Basil...but see you too have done something dangerous....loaded me with information.....hahaha...and the hail and rain storm stopped and sun is out so I am going back outside but sadly this is to bury our dead fish but close to the azalea of course.

I let my basil flower and go to seed last yr. This spring I had hundreds of little n=baby basils popping up. I shoulda sold them, but didn't ...Still have the basil children growing, giving me leaves & pesto. Yum!

So did you try basil yet? You really should.
I like the standard Italian basil , Greek, which is a perennial here and the Thai or holy basil - all different, but great for adding a flavor boost raw or cooked :)
I can't do without it but then I'm a pro Cilantro person too. Cilantro is one of those love/hate things.

Wow didn't know there were so many different varieties. I only planted genovese basil but I did get some thai basil seedlings but they are growing really slowly. I don't think any nurseries around here have so many different varieties. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on some seeds for next year. I added the purple ruffles and the pesto perpetuo to my wishlist.

:) miracle crap haha love it, thnx for sharing. I began growing Holy Basil this yr and pick about 10 leaves a day along with some mint leaves and steep in about 1/2 gal water that I bring to a boil. I sip on it nearly all day. It is amazing how it has helped eliminate the nausea and hot flashes I have been having for over a yr.I am impressed with this plant and want to keep it as a part of my life from now on.

Hey John...Great video, thank you! Like someone else here said, I thought I was doing good with 5 varieties, but that is why I call you my garden guru! I did have one I don't believe you had (and I'm sure there are more varieties) and I planted it from seed. It's Albahaca-greek mini basil. It has a taste very similar to the globe basil. K.O.G.!

Hi John I absolutely love basil I started growin all kinds of it in my backyard thanks to your videos, I read online though that if I want to have Thai basil lemon basil etc. next year I have to keep my basals from cross pollinating is that true? Or will they just grow back on their own the next year? If I need to keep them from cross pollinating how do I do that?

Compost tea is wonderful stuff and it's great as a foliar feed. But when I used it, I was always careful to only apply it to the soil and to non-consumable parts of my plants. I noticed that you dumped it all over the edible leaves and everything... aren't you worried about eating poop?

My grandmother was telling me that we have a farmers market. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can grow out here and maybe some tips. Right now I have something eating my plants. Really lost on what to do. Anyways, I love your videos and hope I can support my family by growing my own veggies.

Do you have any suggestion for a natural organic remedy or home made recipe for an effective pesticide? I would like to avoid using chemical products. Thank you :-)

You can generally tell if there is enough water if the soil looks brown instead of dark grey or black especially if you used compost as a component of the soil.

Try salt..place an inch of sea salt in the bottom of a canning jar. Alternate layering clean, dry, whole basil leaves and salt until the jar is full. The salt draws out moisture from the leaves and take on the flavor of the herb you are using. It's like having fresh basil all winter plus basil flavoured salt

I don't think its a bad combination of plants. the cool part about growing is, its all about what you like, grow what you like to eat! with that being said, it'd be a good idea, especially if its your first season there, is to grow a larger variety of plants. then you'll have a better idea of what grows well and not so well, so you can dial it in better and better over the years. have fun!
