I hate ppl are saying oikawa doesn't have the talent at all. He has but as compared to few of the others, he is a little inferior them. What I think is, he might not have absolute talent in things to be managed by hands on, but he has the talent to nail all the things he want to try. He has the great instinct. What he's different from the geniuses (indicated by the series) is, he can't control the ball's direction as he likes, such thing doesn't come naturally to him, but he is practicing and improving it. And that's why he can execute many reckless moves. I also hate ppl saying he has trashy personality. He is a player and the captain. What's important in a game? There is something I'd like to point out, because everyone seems to forget about it. Oikawa reached his limits even before we meet him, when we learn that he injured his knee. It proves two things : the first one is that he trains hard (but in Haikyu everyone trains hard, the best players are the most persevering). But the most important one is that it proves that he will never be able to be at the same level than Ushiwaka and Kageyama. But there is a thing I don't like in his state of mind, it's the way he calls talented people geniuses, especially Kageyama. What I'm gonna say is something I read somewhere, so it does not come from me, but I wholly agree with it : "Oikawa (and a bunch of other people) assumes that just because of his talent, everything is easy to Kageyama. But somehow it's a burden : because if he does great things it's normal or effortless to him. Instead, if he loses it's his fault. People who calls him genius never consider how he lives to compete in order to become the very best he can. Sure his supposed best might be a tad higher than others but this doesn't mean to be living with such a pressure. It doesn't mean he doesn't train furiously to reach any option that can make him the best. He never sits on any achievement, because the one who thinks he has reached the top and stops climbing can only fall back behind" (this is something both Oikawa and Kageyama acknowledge). I think people often forget that Kageyama trained all his life, even in chapter 387 we never saw him do something that wasn't related to volleyball, we never saw him wear any other clothes than a training gear, and he never had any friends BECAUSE of his investment in volleyball practice. He is probably the character who started volleyball the earlier. So yeah, the fact that Oikawa didn't go to nationals is sad, but Karasuno was a better team. Every player trains hard to get where he wants. You can't say that Karasuno didn't train hard, and you'd be pissed if Karasuno were the ones who didn't go to the nationals, and not only because they are the main protagonists. Oikawa will probably never be the best, but this is the purpose of his development : don't forget that Haikyu is realistic, and everything doesn't end like in a fairytale. Hard work usually pays, but not always. And you have to accept it to go on.
The power of a hardworker.
