Absolutely one of the most rewatchable moments of all time! Just perfect 10 across the board character dialogue, music, animation, everything is just chefs kiss perfect 🤌🏼
I've seen this anime and the original comics hundreds of times, but I'm sure this is the one of the best episode for me. And the other two episodes haven't come out yet!!!! In those two episodes, I fell in love with the best MB in the nation, 'Hirugami' and the old coach of Shiratorizawa. haikyuu's so amazing, as usual.
I've been waiting for you to react to this forever! Even as an Olympian, I knew you could relate to those intrusive thoughts of mediocrity, and it's so inspiring to everyone watching that you, a world champion, have felt the same way.
"I'm nothing but average" This breaks my heart because I think every athlete who played some level of competitive sports has had this moment where they realize that he or she is just average. But Tanaka's mentality feels like a shout-out to all athletes. The world is moving forward. You can wallow in your shortcomings or give every ounce of energy you have to overcome them.
Y'know, I just realised something pretty cool, despite it seeming kinda... random, for lack of a better word? When you really think about it, Oikawa and Tanaka struggled in very similar ways, despite being in different positions of skill, personality, etc. Oikawa was looking at a goal he saw far above him in Kageyama, Ushikawa... "geniuses." This kept him down. For Tanaka, he looked at his team for comparison, to declare himself "nothing but average." This kept him down. But how do they work through it, in the end? Oikawa understands that if he doesn't keep pushing, then he may never see his talent bloom. He'll never truly know whether he was good enough. But if he does, then so long as he believes it, that day will come. Tanaka understands that, while he may be "average" right now, that's no reason for him to stop pushing. As long as he keeps trying until he can, then he will. Both prove it to themselves in those very same matches. From Oikawa's long set, to Tanaka's cross spike, I'd like to believe those were the moments they began to evolve even further as players.
I thought so too... The only difference is that I was indeed only slightly better than average in my shitty league in a third tier country in my sport. Accepting I'll never ever reach the top level simply because of my physical limitations was one of the hardest decisions of my life.
i genuinely think one of the reasons this episode is so emotional is because it’s so genuine, tanaka is the representation of real life players on the court when they’re up against stronger people. To feel like you have contributed nothing to your team, to feel like you’re actually nothing special, to feel like you are an average joe who just so happens to play this sport but to still be able to do your best and get back up on your feet. it’s so real
It was also because in that set tanaka was doing everything right, it just didn't translate into points or positive outcomes, specially after the 1st set. His blocking was on point and his attacks were too, kageyama even pointed it out when tanaka asked that he received less sets, saying that tanaka was actually playing well.
Took me a long time to understand what kanoka meant by getting her heart broken. But I think seeing his dedication means that she knows she won't change his heart. Which is tragic because that's exactly what she loves about him
I also love that Ennoshita mentioned how Tanaka would let it go if Kiyoko asked him to :") A small but necessary detail, especially since Tanaka's and Nishinoya's crush used to be mostly comic relief in the beginning of the series
When Kanoka said "straightforward and honest" literally translated from the word "真っ直ぐ(massugu)" but in Japanese also have a meaning for persistence, focus and loyal on one thing no matter what. So, in the last play sequence Tanaka was trying over and over no matter what happened, that would mean he won't give up on someone he likes no matter what. Many people missed this point because of the literal translation, I guess 😅
@@TrianaNero This, I think, is the key detail. Without this, Tanaka is just a bit of a creep who doesn't know how to take 'no' for an answer. But knowing that all it would take is for Kiyoko to say she disliked his behaviour for him to stop makes it feel more like courtship. It isn't that Tanaka doesn't know how or when to quit, it's just that he's not ever going to be the one to make that decision about the things he wants.
The point Is that if tanaka said he likes someone else there Is nothing that Will make It change his mind. He Is going to follow that Path to the Extreme. Like he Always does. Because he Is honest and straightforward.
Another fun fact about Tanaka. He is the only player who has played every single minute of every single game for Karasuno starting from the practice match against Aoba Josai in Season 1 Episode 6-7 to this match. If you're curious about the rest of the starting players: Nishinoya and Asahi re-joined the club after the Aoba Josai practice match. Daichi got subbed out due to injury vs Wakunan Kageyama got subbed out vs Johzenji (nosebleed) and Shiratorizawa (Fatigue) Hinata got subbed out for Narita vs Johzenji (because Suga was the setter) Tsukki got subbed out vs Shiratorizawa (finger injury)
@@TomasMosca i get that's it's applicable, but you should probably refrain from dropping this again and again. I've only watched the show, and unfortunately this was spoiled for me ages ago, so lucky. But someone might assume spoilers for the season as opposed to the mang
@@TimothyGod "Someone might assume spoilers for the season as a opposed to the manga." Well would you look at that... my name's been changed to "Someone!"
I saw someone make this observation on tiktok: while Tanaka doesn't have any specific role or skill on the team, he is the most consistent presence. Tanaka has played 100% of every single match (practice and real) from the beginning of the series. He has never been pulled or replaced!
Tanaka's final sharp angle shot didn't just come out of nowhere -- ever since he saw Bokuto's sharp angle from summer training camp, he has been practicing it! There were several scenes in previous episodes of Tanaka imitating Bokuto's arm swings and trying it in practice games -- he has prepared for this moment! This episode never fails to get me cry I relate so much to Tanaka's frustration from time to time and his monologue just saves me from falling deeper into bad feelings.
That is one of my favorite details in rewatching Haikyuu, way back in season 2 when he saw that cut shot from Bokuto, he loved it so much and he's been trying it and failing a lot. I think he hit it once but it did not have as much power and authority as it just did in this moment. That's how you do character writing, development and building towards an epic moment and it was all happening in the background. Haikyuu is everything!
To add to that, the track “broken heart” uses the leitmotif for a previous track “omnivorous”, so even the music highlights that it was a move borrowed and based on what came before
His mental strength is amazing, Tanaka. Nothing and no one can ever take that away from him no matter how average he can think he is sometimes. Just like what the coach said to him after the Shiratorizawa game, you are mental MVP, Tanaka!
@@SarahPavanVolleyball I couldn’t agree more. His mindset is top-tier and just a great all-rounder. The steady guy that provides reassurances to everyone in the team and he doesn’t even need to utter a single word for it. Action speaks louder than words!
I love the detail that Tanaka is the one who stayed in the club through everything. Also Hinata's infectious energy is why he is one my favorite main characters. It's not extra or forced, it actually feels genuine and he always has such a positive impact on his teammates
Oh and also! This is the episode that really made me appreciate Bokuto so much more. Before, I found him very entertaining, and I liked his relationships with Hinata, Tsukki, Akashi, but that was about it. But seeing him empathize so much with Tanaka all throughout this episode really hammers home that he's a really good guy at heart.
I love the "does my average self really have time to be looking down right now?" That moment reminds me so much of the Oikawa long pass scene, with the coach giving his speech.
As much as I'm happy that Tanaka keep doing what he needs to, I feel bad for Kanoka that realized she really had her heart broken after that play sequence 🥲 When Kanoka said "straightforward and honest" literally translated from the word "真っ直ぐ(massugu)" but in Japanese also have a meaning for persistence, focus and loyal on one thing no matter what. So, in the last play sequence Tanaka was trying over and over no matter what happened, that would mean he won't give up on someone he likes no matter what. Sadly many people missed this point because of the translation, I guess 😅 Btw I actually have Tanaka's birthday acrylic stand in my room with that quote, "My average self, do you really have time to look down?" to encourage myself. I hope they will make the next year birthday stand with "Once you fall, the only way is to back up"
I NEED EVERY PIECE OF INSPIRATIONAL HAIKYUU MERCH!! I love that!!! Also, thank you for sharing that translation piece. It makes the whole scene that much for beautiful and heartbreaking.
Sarah's on fire with the guesses this episode. I honestly have never seen any reactor got the gist of what Broken Heart means that early. Some just don't get it at all. About Hinata's encouragement, I remember someone pointed out that he'd hesitated what to say and how to say it to Tanaka back in the Seijoh match but this time, he didn't even falter and just jumped straight in with the compliments. Even small things like that show his personal growth and the team's bond.
@@44benon I haven't finished their Haikyuu reaction so I'm not sure, but Sheera usually is the sharpest of them. There's also Lindsay of Boldcast who understood what it means.
I'm not an athlete, but every day at work at 5 pm I get lazy to answer my colleagues in a lively voice. I think it's a really great ability for someone when keep making mistakes, losing his stamina, and mentally struggling as an athlete, but to constantly encourage their teammates like "Nice Receive! Fine Play!" and to show great play without giving up. Deep down in Tanaka's heart, he thinks he's an ordinary guy but he's been a person who's constantly trying to acquire something more than that ordinary, and that effort finally made him who could never be ordinary.
I love the description of Tanaka climbing the stairs. All people climb stairs like that in their lives. And they also stop or fall down. Still, it is we ourselves who choose to keep climbing.
Hinata is just so genuine, innocent and straightforward that you know he really meant what he said and it’s so heartwarming that It was what Tanaka needed exactly at that time. Tanaka just entered the love house! Wooohoo! This is a rollercoaster for us all. I knew you’d cry coz I did hahaha.
I also really love how it's technically a callback to S1 (where Tanaka was being targeted by Oikawa) and Hinata wondered if he should say something. Of course Hinata is brimming with admiration for anything great in volleyball, but I'm pretty sure that was an active decision to voice his positive energy when he saw Tanaka having a tough time.
Everyone in Karasuno complimented each other, each and everyone fills in the gap of others, they are that kind of team. I remember season 1 Tanaka rooting for Hinaya and beliveing in him and helping him and now Hinata was there for him!
"It's ok to mess up because everyone on this side of the net is by your side" is something Tanaka taught him 🥺. I love them so much their relationship is so supportive
"How many more tears am I going to shed?" Short answer: All of them This is one of the episodes I've been most excited for you to watch, and your reaction was exactly what I imagined! Tanaka has been practicing that shot ever since he saw Bokuto do it during the summer training camp, and the fact that THIS is the moment where he finally nails it, at this crucial point in the match, after everything that happened leading up to it, really just perfectly encapsulates Tanaka both as a person and what he means to the Karasuno team.
That is sports!! Work on something forever until you FINALLY have an opportunity to use it in a real situation. I love Tanaka, and I am ready to cry for the rest of the series. I don't want it to end!!
Can we appreciate that Kageyama didn't doubt Tanaka even for a second? Also, for me, Tanaka's line "If I keep doing it till I can do it, I can actually do it." is one of the most impactful lines in Haikyuu and I think about it often ^_^
This episode really solidified Haikyuu as one of my all time faves. That slow-mo moment where he acknowledges that he isn’t a star player on the team, and how mentally draining it can be to feel like you’re underperforming or not pulling your weight. When the negative thoughts crespín, that “well I will probably never be the best, so what’s the point” is so relatable to me. And still have the willpower to push through and give 120%, it’s such an inspirational moment
One of my favorite Haikyuu episode. Tanaka being so self-aware of how he's not extraordinary yet he showed that even if he’s just a normal guy, he still pushes himself as far as he can go. What an amazing way to end the first set😢
Tanaka has been working on that sharp cross spike since he saw Bokuto do it in the middle of season 2's training arc. To see him be the very embodiment of perseverance, his advice to his childhood friend of "just keep trying until you can" being fully actualized on SET POINT is one of my favorite moments of all anime.
Yes! In the practice match against Date Ko, when Kageyama was angry about the hitters missing despite good sets, Tanaka said he wouldn’t give up on trying to make the super sharp angle shot. And here is the result of that hard work.
my fave bit(like the funny kind) from this is bokuto just FEELING what tanaka's going through - being shut-out by blocks, being denied that set by tsukki. because of how bokuto is, we know how he would end up if he was at the receiving end of all of that. it works as a funny bit but also as a parallel between the two bc they both the loud, energetic mood-makers, and tanaka even took some inspiration from bokuto
honestly its a breath of fresh air to get a reactor on this platform that actually has the intelligence to understand what's happening and make accurate predictions while also providing some real-world experience to the audience. enjoyed sitting through couple episodes of this keep reacting to anime please it's really nice to see someone who really gets it. You are actually invested in the story and characters and are passionate about it not just trying to cash in on hype. Appreciate it.
I always feel like the parallels between Tanaka and Bokuto are always criminally overlooked in this episode. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the point that capped the episode about mental toughness was a cross court that Bo is known for. I also think it’s cute that you can see tanaka practicing hitting it in the background after he sees Bo hit it for the first time.
Yep, this episode was such a tearjerker when i first watched it too, and from how invested you looked the early part of the episode I knew you what be crying too for sure, also i absolutely love that line from Tanaka's inner monologue "..my average self. Do you really have time to be looking down?", and I love how Kiyoko was so calm and not startled at all about Tanaka regaining his composure
Sarah predicted everything this episode again as usual. To answer your question about the tear jerking moments, there's still plenty left this season. Just you wait.
Episode 16 is a freaking journey. Seeing Tanaka down was a real shocker, didn't realize how important his attitude on the court was until I saw him almost break this episode. Nishinoya and Tsukki get so much slack this episode from reactors who are non volleyball players, but they just did their job perfectly here like Sarah said. From hinata to the third years to the second years reminding everybody that Tanaka was the only one who didn't leave the team - all amazing moments but Tanaka's mental toughness is craazyyyyyyyy. " Once you fall, the only way to go is back up" - Great mindset!!!!!!!!! Kanoka also Lydia, that Naruto run by Tanaka 👍👍👍👍
so i never understood what kanoka meant when she said that she just had her heart broken until i went back and rewatched the ep a few times. tanaka is strong-minded, determined, and doesn't give up. this was displayed rly well this specific episode, and we also see how much kanoka likes tanaka bc of how he is. however, the night before when tanaka accidentally blurted out that he was in love with another girl to kanoka, it was very sudden, but it was also true. kanoka knew that when tanaka said that, he was being honest and straightforward bc that’s how he’s always been, ever since they were little. she knew that he wouldn’t give up on the girl his heart was set on, and it broke her heart, bc kanoka loved him. UGH i love tanaka okay goodnight
This episode never fails to get me teary eyed I love how long this moment was in the making, too. Back in season 2, Bokuto did his super cut shot and you could see Tanaka trying to mimic the swing in amazement. Then, through the next couple seasons we saw him trying and failing at it. He even told Kageyama that he wasn't going to stop trying it in their practice match against Date-ko.
This episode... I recently was having my toughest battle with depression. Thing are so tight and we're working so hard, I manage several people and I care so much about them bu I was getting burnt out, I slipped so far into depression couldn't stop thinking about suicide... No one could guess I'm always smiles and positivity. I wanted to give up, I felt worthless and admitted to myself I'm just average how did I even get promoted. Haiykuu and it's many points on perseverance echo in my head, and this scene rallied me not give up and to push forward, focus on things I could control to improve my mental state. Push my self and be the strength for my team. When I watch this I empathize so much, I feel like I experienced the same. I'm doing 100% better, I'm managing my mental health, I'm killing it with my team and we are doing great 👌🏾
Ah, I didn't think I'd get emotional watching this for the third time. I guess I see myself there. I a bit of the Tanaka of my table tennis team. The average dude, but never skips practice, never stops attacking until the match is over. The mountain is steep and foggy, but we climb.
Sarah totally gets how a hitter feels when they demanded a set and the setter trusted them completely with the ball. The split reaction change Sarah did when she found out Kageyama decided to set the ball to Tanaka even though he seemingly wasn't at his best just goes to show how much she empathizes with Tanaka.
Tanaka is really the one I respect the most in this whole anime. He is just so.... good and genuine. He is loyal to the core, he is so determined and just simply a really amazing person. From his feelings for Kiyoko, to his consideration about Kanoka and then his loyalty for his team, his determination. I would absolutely love to have his presence around me.
This is my favourite Tanka episode. He had so much character building in this episode especially when he saw the strength in Daichi, Asuma, and Suga's eyes after hearing the slander against the team and thinking they were not taking it seriously. Also How even when he thinks he is just average and is down how he decides to get back up and never give up.
This isn't only one of my favorite Tanaka episodes. It may go down as one of my favorite Haikyu!! episodes, period. This one made such an impact on me.
I have been waiting for Sarah to reach this episode for so long. I knew she'd love it! Tanaka's moment here is so relatable for anyone that has taken any sports seriously. "Once you fall, the only way is to go back up!"
18:58 Daichi is an optimistic person and has a great vision and goal for Karasuno. yet he's still realistic and doesn't sugarcoat that nothing will come easy if you want to win.
"My average self...do you really have the time to look down like that?" One of my favorite lines in Haikyuu because hard work beats talent every time. It's just so relatable because if you're just average and seeing all these freaks of nature around you, the only option you have to keep up with them is to show up time and time again which I think Tanaka embodies. It's also represented in Oikawa's line in S2E24 "Instinct is something YOU polish, talent is something you MAKE bloom." Anyone has the ability to go above and beyond and it's inspiring scenes like this that really drive that message home.
I love how Haikyuu has so many characters but we manage to get to know their personalities, play style, objectives...! Even the characters we only meet for a short time.
Yet another of my favorite episodes in the series. The emotional impact of this one is right up there with the post-credits restaurant scene after the loss to Seijoh in season 1. IIRC, that was the only other episode (besides in Run With The Wind) that made Sarah cry this hard, although the camera died during that one so we'll never really know. Still, this just perfectly shows why Tanaka is such an amazing guy and character. Love him.
Oh my gosh, that S1 scene crushed me. Stupid camera!! 😡 I am trying to remember my biggest crying moments of the series and I'm struggling... S1 restaurant scene, S2 final rally, S3 Tsukki block and when they won.... ???
Just found your channel and I don't know why it took so long to find an actual Volleyball player's (and on an Olympic level at that) reaction. It's so fascinating to see a players reaction to an anime/show about a sport they love. Will definitely be checking out more reactions!
I must have seen this chapter maybe 20 times, it moves me every time. Tanaka is incredible, that strength to follow, his shout, Kageyama smiles, he knows what Ryu is capable of, and we should all be able to feel that "I CAN DO IT". Always one of my favorite characters, it's incredible how everyone looks at him with admiration when he asks for the ball. Cap 10/10, Haikyuu is this. When you're sad, come back here. Greetings from Argentina♥
Oh my god! I did not know that I needed your channel to show up on my recommendations! I love volleyball but never really played it much and wasn't very good at it in High School but Haikyuu is one of my favorite animes of all time! I absolutely LOVE it! I've watched it 2 or 3 times and just can't get enough of it. It makes me so happy that I'm not the only one who gets worked up or cries at certain moments or THE CHILLS! LOVE your channel!
No matter how many times I watch and re-watch Haikyuu! this episode never fails to make me tear up. Everything Tanaka said about him thinking he is a genius, but he also realizes that he isn't number one on anything. That he's just average. I mean, MAN, I freaking RELATE.
I think Tanaka is clearly well on his way to becoming the next ace for Karasuno. He may not have the raw size or power that Asahi has, but he's already developing a more diverse skill set, and definitely has the mentality for it. In another year, I could see him growing into a similar sort of ace as Bokuto, but without the mental weakness.
Sarah your reactions are TOP TIER! You understand the characters. You understand the game. You understand the story. Beyond that you ENJOY it just the same as we do! I’m so amazed at how quickly you connected the title of the episode to who it was referring to. Everybody is cheering and feeling the high of Karasuno’s win through Tanaka’s point, but Kanoka is hit with the reality of heart break in the same point 😭😭
i have the same exact emotion when watching this episode, absolutely one of the best scene they nailed it frame by frame. don't forget the scoring music by yuki hayashi when tanaka smash that cross spike is beautiful, always have this episode on repeat.
The way Sarah is reacting to the episode really shows the quality of both Haikyu and Sarah. She as someone truly understanding Volleyball making so many correct calls before they happen, speaks of how realistic these scenes are. And also props to her for noticing that many details, remembering all the names and understanding so many concepts that were only hinted at. I think she understood the love relation even before the final scene with kanoka, which is mind boggling. I didn't grasp the situation until Kanoka said that she got her heath broken and even then I had to rewind
Outstanding reaction!! I was so impressed. I always wonder why Sarah can understand the meaning of the episodes so quickly & deeply (as well as at RWTW). Anyway, her sharp sensitivity makes us so happy indeed.
Oh man this episode never fails to turn on the waterworks. I've seen it multiple times already, I know what's coming, and I still get teary eyed every single time. Also, Bokuto in the sidelines slowly losing his mind as the episode went on. Just perfection.
Another thing that might get lost because this moment is so amazing, is how great that cut shot was, its the one he was practicing all along and he couldnt get it right, but look at him now, he finally made it his own and he killed it on that point! Great reaction as always Sarah! 🤍
I loved how the other three 2nd year subs just laugh after seeing that because they knew that is how it was going to play out... love this anime so much!
This moment together with Tsukishima block on ushijima are definitely my favorites from the anime, can't wait to see more, they're not just awesome they're also so beautiful and emotional
It’s such a powerful and motivating episode. Tanaka’s day to day resilience, commitment, and mental strength is so empowering. Love the team mates who are each others biggest cheerleaders!
Ever since your first reaction video, I've been waiting for this episode!! I love Tanaka and I relate to him so much, so it's always my favorite thing to watch people react to his monologue!
Still one of my favorite episodes from the season. I just love Tanaka’s vulnerability that we see today and it reminds me that even the strongest (mentally) players have their sad times and I just personally love it bc it relates to the average person.
The only thing I can say is that it was this chapter and Tanaka who motivated me not to quit volleyball, understanding that giving up was not an option, just keep going and focus on myself to support my team no matter what. Tanaka is definitely my role model and my favorite character.
I'm so glad we finally got to this episode. Saying I've been excited since you started Season 4 is an understatement. One of my favorites from this season that hit me way harder than I expected and continues to hit hard with every rewatch; tears everytime. I'm so glad you enjoyed it just as much!
it is a bit true that he may be average in the physical areas but Tanaka is number 1 in the mentality. just the ability to keep going even when everything seems to be going wrong is a very great quality.
I think out of all the amazing episodes of this series, this is the one that sticks with me and resonates with me the most. Never fails to reduce me to a sobbing mess as I see Tanaka's mental battle.
The intensity with which you watch the match in this show is so commendable. I really enjoy your reactions because they're based in experience as a volleyball player who has competed at the highest possible level this world has to offer, and your reaction is identical to that of a standard anime geek who knows nothing about volleyball other that what I've learned from this show. So genuine and honest. Thank you Sarah.
Honestly, I could relate with tanaka's monolog so much. When the negative thoughts pour in and anything you do is just average. But every individual is special in their own way. Stop cutting the onions! 😢😢😊😊
OMG YES!!! I was waiting for this episode's reaction for so long. I haven't watched it yet, I am so happy to watch it and see your reactions to that. This was and still is one of my favorite episdodes in the series.
I've seen this episode many times, more than ten times. Every time I see this episode,I cry out 😭😭😭 It reminds me of the time l used to play volleyball at the junior high school & high school. Many time I had negative mind in the match . “It’s not my day today.” At the loosing match point, “Don't come to me !” Said in my mind. I lost my confidence and I was so weak . “I’m nothing but average.” But Tanaka got over it . I love him so much ❤ Sarah, Have you ever had such feelings before?
I cried with you Sarah san 😭 I can relate to this kind of frustration during the play I had on semi final match that we won and became the HS Volleyball champion🎉 Watching Haikyu reminds me of nostalgic moments I had been before. I love Haikyu❤
This show! Damn. It's the third time I watch this episode but it's the first one that I can feel the whole emotion and understand why she realizes that her heart was really broken.
Damn I don't know, but every episodes like this in Haikyuu, all of them made me cry, this was weird cause I have not ever cried while watching an anime before, but Haikyuu was the first one which made me cry that much.
The mental strength of Tanaka is terrifying I must say. Tears come to me everything watching this episode. And yet, this is not the end of the emotion rolling coaster for this season. Waaaaay to go!
A lot of reactors and myself were pissed that Nishinoya made that pass but like Sarah said it is literally his job, also I really love Tsukishima in this episode. Anyone else in Karasuno , bar maybe Kageyama because he would have seen a cooler attack, passes that ball to Tanaka. Tsukki didn't get sucked into that and went for the Ace. However when you find out that he did take Tanaka's feelings into consideration and KNEW that Tanaka's mental toughness will see him through. And at the end when Tanaka shrugs it off and Tsukki tells him that it is not that easy to shrug off feeling depressed, but you can see that he admires how Tanaka can do it? Tsukki you lovely salty volleyball idiot
I am speechless. This could go down as one of my top 3 Haikyuu moments everrrrrr
Absolutely one of the most rewatchable moments of all time! Just perfect 10 across the board character dialogue, music, animation, everything is just chefs kiss perfect 🤌🏼
I nominate Tanaka for Love House CEO
Please continue to analyze and overanalyze the episode's title. It was noticeably missed in the previous episode. And yes, Tanaka is awesome.
I've seen this anime and the original comics hundreds of times,
but I'm sure this is the one of the best episode for me.
And the other two episodes haven't come out yet!!!!
In those two episodes, I fell in love with the best MB in the nation, 'Hirugami'
and the old coach of Shiratorizawa. haikyuu's so amazing, as usual.
I've been waiting for you to react to this forever!
Even as an Olympian, I knew you could relate to those intrusive thoughts of mediocrity, and it's so inspiring to everyone watching that you, a world champion, have felt the same way.
"I'm nothing but average"
This breaks my heart because I think every athlete who played some level of competitive sports has had this moment where they realize that he or she is just average.
Well said guys!!😢
@@ron4troncrying so hard rn
@@ron4tronthanks a lot i needed this ❤
I thought so too...
Yeah this episode is so relatable. It makes me teary eyed
I love that there are people that have finally made this connection. Tanaka is staying true. So it’s amazing to see how things turn out. 😊
If you're curious about the rest of the starting players:
Nishinoya and Asahi re-joined the club after the Aoba Josai practice match.
Daichi got subbed out due to injury vs Wakunan
Kageyama got subbed out vs Johzenji (nosebleed) and Shiratorizawa (Fatigue)
Hinata got subbed out for Narita vs Johzenji (because Suga was the setter)
Tsukki got subbed out vs Shiratorizawa (finger injury)

Well would you look at that... my name's been changed to "Someone!"
@@blakeverdon4492 did that spoil for you?
I saw someone make this observation on tiktok: while Tanaka doesn't have any specific role or skill on the team, he is the most consistent presence. Tanaka has played 100% of every single match (practice and real) from the beginning of the series. He has never been pulled or replaced!
I'm watching Studio Gek's reaction at the moment, they're on season 3, and they consistently give Tanaka his flowers
@@phenomenonnarutokun i'm watching them too!!
Haikyuu is everything!
i'm so glad you mentioned to Bokuto and the obvious about Tanaka practice bc he saw him first
To add to that, the track “broken heart” uses the leitmotif for a previous track “omnivorous”, so even the music highlights that it was a move borrowed and based on what came before
YES! I've seen this detail so many times, rewatching the show with youtube reactionists :D And i love it.
actually he tried it into the tsubakihara match as well, but it came off super weak.
“Then we just need to win. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s that simple.” Probably my favorite Daichi quote in the entire series
His mental strength is amazing, Tanaka. Nothing and no one can ever take that away from him no matter how average he can think he is sometimes. Just like what the coach said to him after the Shiratorizawa game, you are mental MVP, Tanaka!
He isn't a star at any one skill, but he is steady at everything. He is a star teammate though
And he loves the sport so much that he literally inserts himself into it. It might be comedic but Bokuto is a real one
Bokuto is part of the monster generation after all, he's high quality player even among pro players
TBF he is the bets outside in the series at his top state
He is definitely a good guy... just a little immature and self-absorbed. I wouldn't be heartbroken if he changed his tagline as well 😂
@@SarahPavanVolleyball he's freaking 18 only at that time, still pretty mature if u compare to real life 18yo 😅
Sadly many people missed this point because of the translation, I guess 😅
Btw I actually have Tanaka's birthday acrylic stand in my room with that quote, "My average self, do you really have time to look down?" to encourage myself. I hope they will make the next year birthday stand with "Once you fall, the only way is to back up"
yes, Kanoka realised that tanaka will never stop chasing his love...
The only other person who seemed to get it was Sheera , one of the reactors on the yaboyroshi channel.
@@44benon I haven't finished their Haikyuu reaction so I'm not sure, but Sheera usually is the sharpest of them. There's also Lindsay of Boldcast who understood what it means.
You're making me feel really good about myself right now 😂
I'm not an athlete, but every day at work at 5 pm
I get lazy to answer my colleagues in a lively voice.
I think it's a really great ability for someone
when keep making mistakes, losing his stamina, and mentally struggling as an athlete,
but to constantly encourage their teammates like
"Nice Receive! Fine Play!" and to show great play without giving up.
Deep down in Tanaka's heart, he thinks he's an ordinary guy
but he's been a person who's constantly trying to acquire something more than that ordinary,
and that effort finally made him who could never be ordinary.
I love the description of Tanaka climbing the stairs. All people climb stairs like that in their lives. And they also stop or fall down. Still, it is we ourselves who choose to keep climbing.
That visual was soooo powerful. Loved it!
@@peteele4030Love that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Emotional intelligence
Everyone in Karasuno complimented each other, each and everyone fills in the gap of others, they are that kind of team. I remember season 1 Tanaka rooting for Hinaya and beliveing in him and helping him and now Hinata was there for him!
"It's ok to mess up because everyone on this side of the net is by your side" is something Tanaka taught him 🥺. I love them so much their relationship is so supportive
"How many more tears am I going to shed?"
Short answer: All of them
This is one of the episodes I've been most excited for you to watch, and your reaction was exactly what I imagined! Tanaka has been practicing that shot ever since he saw Bokuto do it during the summer training camp, and the fact that THIS is the moment where he finally nails it, at this crucial point in the match, after everything that happened leading up to it, really just perfectly encapsulates Tanaka both as a person and what he means to the Karasuno team.
short answer would be "yes" :D
There are so many incredible moments/details in this episode. Kanoka, Kiyoko, Bokuto, Elf... so many amazing comments and reactions.
As you said, the score here is absolutely incredible. One of my favorite pieces from the show which genearlly has a really amazing score.

Sarah predicted everything this episode again as usual. To answer your question about the tear jerking moments, there's still plenty left this season. Just you wait.
Honestly, I'm so excited
Lydia is a queen 👸
Yes Yes YES!!! to everything you are saying. This anime is full of golden quotes.
so i never understood what kanoka meant when she said that she just had her heart broken until i went back and rewatched the ep a few times. tanaka is strong-minded, determined, and doesn't give up. this was displayed rly well this specific episode, and we also see how much kanoka likes tanaka bc of how he is. however, the night before when tanaka accidentally blurted out that he was in love with another girl to kanoka, it was very sudden, but it was also true. kanoka knew that when tanaka said that, he was being honest and straightforward bc that’s how he’s always been, ever since they were little. she knew that he wouldn’t give up on the girl his heart was set on, and it broke her heart, bc kanoka loved him. UGH i love tanaka okay goodnight
We don't deserve Tanaka. Even though it kinda broke my heart that he didn't feel right pursuing things with Kanoka, his devotion to Kiyoko is

This episode never fails to get me teary eyed
I love how long this moment was in the making, too.
I'm doing 100% better, I'm managing my mental health, I'm killing it with my team and we are doing great 👌🏾
my favorite part about this episode are the dudes in the blue that had their own mini arc. From making fun of Tanaka to cheering for him
Ah, I didn't think I'd get emotional watching this for the third time. I guess I see myself there. I a bit of the Tanaka of my table tennis team. The average dude, but never skips practice, never stops attacking until the match is over. The mountain is steep and foggy, but we climb.
This is my favorite episode so far, and Tanaka is my favorite carácter, I bawled my eyes out on this one.
I can't believe how much this one got me This episode will go down as one of my all-time favorites for sure.
田中が清子さんを愛してる気持ちが揺るがないって分かるところが最高。それでこそ田中って思ってるのか、カノカの最後の"やっぱり私、失恋したかもしれない"って言ってる場面はとても満足そうだった
@@SarahPavanVolleyball that is awesome
I have been waiting for Sarah to reach this episode for so long. I knew she'd love it! Tanaka's moment here is so relatable for anyone that has taken any sports seriously. "Once you fall, the only way is to go back up!"
Sarah's nod and understanding always warms my heart.
Simply said: The Emotions u get from this show, are pure gold for the soul. We love anime beacuse if that. Great work.
Ill never get bored of watching someone else appreciate Tanaka. Great video!
18:58 Daichi is an optimistic person and has a great vision and goal for Karasuno. yet he's still realistic and doesn't sugarcoat that nothing will come easy if you want to win.
I feel like everyone needs a Daichi. Show me some love but call me out if I need it.
16:45 FINALLY! Someone who understands. Noya getting that ball creates another attacker for that possesion.
"My average self...do you really have the time to look down like that?"
One of my favorite lines in Haikyuu because hard work beats talent every time. It's just so relatable because if you're just average and seeing all these freaks of nature around you, the only option you have to keep up with them is to show up time and time again which I think Tanaka embodies. It's also represented in Oikawa's line in S2E24 "Instinct is something YOU polish, talent is something you MAKE bloom."
Anyone has the ability to go above and beyond and it's inspiring scenes like this that really drive that message home.
My favorite episode in the series. Tanaka’s back story is the best. And I love Bokuto’s sympathetic overreaction to Tanaka’s stress.
At 16:34 Sarah coming after anime volleyball line refs' jobs got me LAUGHING AND I CANT STOP!!!! HAHAHHAAHA

Every time i watch this episode, i tear up and then the music builds and Tanaka gets over his wall the tears just flow!
Sarah has to be my #1 reactor. The passion and insight is just as captivating as the show itself.

Love seeing people enjoy this show as much as I do.
Ever since your first reaction video, I've been waiting for this episode!! I love Tanaka and I relate to him so much, so it's always my favorite thing to watch people react to his monologue!
my fav sports anime, even tough i did not know the abc of volleyball when i started watching haikyuu,
Still one of my favorite episodes from the season. I just love Tanaka’s vulnerability that we see today and it reminds me that even the strongest (mentally) players have their sad times and I just personally love it bc it relates to the average person.
my favourite thing is watching professionals watch haikyuu and seeing how they resonate with particular characters
The only thing I can say is that it was this chapter and Tanaka who motivated me not to quit volleyball, understanding that giving up was not an option, just keep going and focus on myself to support my team no matter what.
Tanaka is definitely my role model and my favorite character.
Tanaka is representing all of us ordinary people , that is why its so relatable
I'm so glad we finally got to this episode. Saying I've been excited since you started Season 4 is an understatement. One of my favorites from this season that hit me way harder than I expected and continues to hit hard with every rewatch; tears everytime. I'm so glad you enjoyed it just as much!
it is a bit true that he may be average in the physical areas but Tanaka is number 1 in the mentality. just the ability to keep going even when everything seems to be going wrong is a very great quality.
I cried countless time with this episode or at least i get my eyes teared up, i watch this scene many times and i still get teared up
I think out of all the amazing episodes of this series, this is the one that sticks with me and resonates with me the most. Never fails to reduce me to a sobbing mess as I see Tanaka's mental battle.
"Being so simple and so devoted like that. It's probably really hard." Is by far my favorite quote of this season.
damn, this is literally me when watching haikyuu, tears are not stopping to fall down.
Sarah's delighted look after a spike goes through is always so.... delightful!!

I was waiting for this episode! This is when season 4 becomes absolutely amazing
Honestly, I could relate with tanaka's monolog so much. When the negative thoughts pour in and anything you do is just average. But every individual is special in their own way. Stop cutting the onions! 😢😢😊😊
Right?! We don't deserve Tanaka. He is so under-rated as a player but the role he plays is critical to Karasuno.
OMG YES!!! I was waiting for this episode's reaction for so long. I haven't watched it yet, I am so happy to watch it and see your reactions to that.
This was and still is one of my favorite episdodes in the series.
Tanaka episodes are honestly just so inspirational
you make me cry once again, your reaction makes me go back when i saw the this episode for the first time.
I love to add that all his second year friends laugh after that cross spike, it show how they believe and trust in him. ❤❤❤
I've seen this episode many times, more than ten times.
Every time I see this episode,I cry out 😭😭😭
It reminds me of the time l used to play volleyball at the junior high school & high school.
Many time I had negative mind in the match .
“It’s not my day today.”
At the loosing match point, “Don't come to me !” Said in my mind. I lost my confidence and I was so weak . “I’m nothing but average.”
But Tanaka got over it .
I love him so much ❤
Sarah,
Have you ever had such feelings before?
I cried with you Sarah san 😭 I can relate to this kind of frustration during the play I had on semi final match that we won and became the HS Volleyball champion🎉
Watching Haikyu reminds me of nostalgic moments I had been before. I love Haikyu❤
This is one of my favorite moments of Haikyuu! Such a beautiful story and Tanaka is always someone you just root for! Let's go!!!
This show! Damn.
It's the third time I watch this episode but it's the first one that I can feel the whole emotion and understand why she realizes that her heart was really broken.
14:51 That’s as the closest Sarah has gotten to swearing and I love that it’s when she’s supporting Tanaka, he deserves so much more 😊
Damn I don't know, but every episodes like this in Haikyuu, all of them made me cry, this was weird cause I have not ever cried while watching an anime before, but Haikyuu was the first one which made me cry that much.
The mental strength of Tanaka is terrifying I must say. Tears come to me everything watching this episode.
And yet, this is not the end of the emotion rolling coaster for this season. Waaaaay to go!
the top 3 moments for me too. The build up for that moment, the soundtrack its just amazing
You are so knowledgeable and so, so invested its making me hold my breath even having already watched the show
