Other then that they are actually pretty strange and outside the box with instrumentals. And lastly, I just dont find them irritating. That part is personal preference. The thing that confuses me is that there seems to be this community of people who hold such hatred and vitriol towards them and their music that I have just never experienced toward any other band. Ive seen groups of people that dont like the music of other bands, but those seem more like pockets rather than the community I see for ajr.

Here’s the thing, as a 14 year old, I can relate to AJR’s lyrics, so I think I find it easier to enjoy their music than most other people. I think that much of the music in this album is really good and is a big step up from previous work, but I can’t say the same for the lyrics. I physically cringe when hearing some of the lyrics in this album.
Fantano will never like bands along the lines of AJR and that's okay. It is music made with the day to day nostalgia and melancholy of "being in your 20's in the 2020's" constantly in mind, more simplistic and observational than any sweeping cerebral or hyper emotional experience. It's music for just neutrally being alive I guess is the way I think about it, kind of the musical equivalent of a motivational poster, which just don't satisfy what Fantano is looking for in terms of music. It does bother me that Fantano paints it as SO exclusively generational as well as the subtly implied narrative that a lack of drastic suffering for a musician is a bad thing (ala "Eminem if nothing bad happened to him" being tongue and cheek stated as sort of a negative here). Like, maybe it's just me but that seems like a dangerous, highly gate-keepery stance to take. I think anyone who's had sort of that "Being an adult doesn't feel that different from being a teen/kid/etc so am I really an adult right now" thought can at least pull a little bit of meaning out of their work, though obviously the closer you are to that point in your life (and thereby the closer you are to, say, age 25) the more immediate that message will seem. Plus the samples and sounds that they select for their songs are undeniably demographically targeted (The Disney-esque moments, "School Band" style instrumentation, SpongeBob, even to some extend the NY subway guy samples), less for profit reasons methinks and more just cause AJR is in fact a part of the audience they are playing to. Yeah, they are in fact millennials, and they're basically playing to their own crowd, playing to people "like them". But that doesn't outright exclude people from other demo's being able to pull meaning from their work. End of the day, there's no one right way to be alive and to then as an extension represent one's life through music. Like hell, that's literally the point of "Smallest Violin". Music shouldn't be this expressive "scar measuring" contest, "Tortured Artist" archetypes be damned. We're all alive here, someone else's suffering and experiences don't invalidate your own etc.

Here’s the thing, as a 14 year old, I can relate to AJR’s lyrics, so I think I find it easier to enjoy their music than most other people. I think that much of the music in this album is really good and is a big step up from previous work, but I can’t say the same for the lyrics. I physically cringe when hearing some of the lyrics in this album.

Fantano will never like bands along the lines of AJR and that's okay. It is music made with the day to day nostalgia and melancholy of "being in your 20's in the 2020's" constantly in mind, more simplistic and observational than any sweeping cerebral or hyper emotional experience. It's music for just neutrally being alive I guess is the way I think about it, kind of the musical equivalent of a motivational poster, which just don't satisfy what Fantano is looking for in terms of music. It does bother me that Fantano paints it as SO exclusively generational as well as the subtly implied narrative that a lack of drastic suffering for a musician is a bad thing (ala "Eminem if nothing bad happened to him" being tongue and cheek stated as sort of a negative here). Like, maybe it's just me but that seems like a dangerous, highly gate-keepery stance to take.
I think anyone who's had sort of that "Being an adult doesn't feel that different from being a teen/kid/etc so am I really an adult right now" thought can at least pull a little bit of meaning out of their work, though obviously the closer you are to that point in your life (and thereby the closer you are to, say, age 25) the more immediate that message will seem. Plus the samples and sounds that they select for their songs are undeniably demographically targeted (The Disney-esque moments, "School Band" style instrumentation, SpongeBob, even to some extend the NY subway guy samples), less for profit reasons methinks and more just cause AJR is in fact a part of the audience they are playing to. Yeah, they are in fact millennials, and they're basically playing to their own crowd, playing to people "like them". But that doesn't outright exclude people from other demo's being able to pull meaning from their work.
End of the day, there's no one right way to be alive and to then as an extension represent one's life through music. Like hell, that's literally the point of "Smallest Violin". Music shouldn't be this expressive "scar measuring" contest, "Tortured Artist" archetypes be damned. We're all alive here, someone else's suffering and experiences don't invalidate your own etc.
