I couldn't believe my luck. I'm not sure how I got it brand new. Perhaps a warehouse had a ton of stock and sold it to CEX at cost to get rid of it. It's definitely not a return as everything was sealed. I'm certainly not complaining.

I'm not sure. I've not connected two monitors using the dock. My guess is that there would be a bottleneck so speeds would go down, but that is just a guess 😊

apparently its not fully compatible with the surface book 2 issue being that it doesnt provide enough power so if connected to the surface book 2 the power will drain
The compatibility page at support.microsoft.com/en-gb/surface/identify-your-surface-dock-and-features-591c07f4-2784-24cf-6445-6fa059237461 does say that it works with the surface book 2, but I’ve not tested that myself. I no longer own the surface dock so it’s not something I can check.

I haven't tested this myself, but yes, that should be possible. When you connect the dock to the monitor, or multiple monitors, you can still view the original display and it remains touch screen etc. 👍

I don't believe passive or active is ever a factor. It's certainly not something I've ever had to consider when buying HDMI cables and adapters from Amazon. If you search Amazon, you'll find specific adapters that confirm they work with the earlier surface models.

Mmm. My first guess would be display settings in Windows. I wouldn't think it would be a hardware issue as I'm not aware of any HDMI cables that don't support 1080p.

I'm not sure exactly why it doesn't work, but my guess it's due to power delivery requirements being different between the older devices and the newer ones. I'm not sure though. After a few years, most tech companies stop supporting older computers.
Well it has a USB port already. I use a Bluetooth mouse with mine. Ideally, with portable devices like this, you want to use wireless accessories. For example, Bluetooth headphones, Bluetooth gaming controllers etc.
Kevin.... I appreciate it. I am trying to connect 2 Dell 27" monitors through the surface dock.... however.... I either get an error on the monitor where it cannot find the vga cable...... or if i have an hdmi to usbc cable.... it cannot find that either. Any ideas?
I reviewed the original surface dock that had two mini display ports. Looks like you have the Surface Dock 2, which has two USB-C display ports. My guess is that you're not using a suitable cable. To check, I'd test the same cable by connecting it directly from your monitor to your Surface device. If it doesn't work directly, it's not going to work with the dock.
Most surface laptops have a USB 3.0 port. The newer one also has type C. So depending on the model you have, you could buy a usb 3.0 or usb type C based docking station.
I had one at work always connected to the dock... Surface pro 4. Eventually the battery swelled up and even popped out of the chassis. Microsoft did agree to replace after warranty since it was considered a hazard.
I suspect there would have been a recall if this was a wide spread problem with the dock, so my guess is that this was the battery. Obviously not good when something like that happens though. Glad you got the return.

i feel bad for ms design, they are not really capable of design a great product. I have surface pro 1, 2 and 3 then stop it because the kept changing the interface making expensive for user to use product. What you have with SP now might not working for future SP release... not worth to spend money
Well this dock does work with the pro 4, 5, 6 and 7. It's not too bad, but the bigger issue is that they haven't s itched to a thunderbolt 3 connection.
If it's new and isn't working, I'd return it immediately. However, if it connects to one monitor and not another, I'd check your cables and settings etc. It could just be a configuration issue.

Good luck trying to eject a Samsung T5. There is no option to do eject which means Windows doesn't need you to right click and eject. Same situation with my WD My Passport drives.

Yes it charges your laptop at the same time. I found it charged my Surface Pro 6 quicker than the default charger.

I believe you can, but it's not something I can test as I don't have it anymore.

No you can't use the dock to connect another PC. You would have to transfer files via your network or via storage.

It's difficult for me to troubleshoot as I don't know what you're doing (or not doing), plus it could be a hardware issue.

Good luck trying to eject a Samsung T5. There is no option to do eject which means Windows doesn't need you to right click and eject. Same situation with my WD My Passport drives.

I've seen it on sale. How many surface docks are there? Cause I've seen one ans it reads: for surface pro 3 and 4. But I have surface pro 6. Is it the same dock?
There is an earlier version I believe. The one I have works with the later versions.
