    Hi! I have a portable display monitor (with battery, touch screen) that has 3 ports -- USB C for power, USB C for display in, and mini HDMI for display in.
    I love that I can connect my SP7 to the monitor just using a USB C video cable, so that when I need a bigger screen when I'm out and about, I just need my SP7, the monitor, and 1 cable. I recently noticed something though -- when I use the USB C on my SP7 and connect it to the monitor's display in (so the monitor is running on battery), my SP7 indicates that it is charging, although I'm pretty sure that the monitor isn't pushing power out through this port.
    Also more intriguing, when I'm set up as described above, and then I connect the Surface Connect charger, it seems like the SP7 doesn't charge. It seems like it's getting "confused" by the USB C display supposedly charging, and the Surface Connect trying to actually charge it.
    Any thoughts on this? Like is it possible that the external display is actually pushing some power into the SP7's USB C port? And also any experience on how the SP7 deals with power coming in from both the USB C and the Surface Connect port at the same time? Could that damage the SP7?
    Thanks!

    Thank you!!

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  3 года назад

      If your monitor has a webcam and speakers built in, it probably has a USB port built in (often a USB Type B port - kind of more square shaped). You'd need to plug that into your Pro 6 to get the webcam to work (USB - A to B cable - make sure you get the right type, one that matches what's on your monitor). It's possible that that would also make the speakers work too. If the monitor has USB ports as well, then it would act like a USB hub, and you probably wouldn't need a dock.

    Hey thank you for your video. My problem is that i got a surface pro with a mini displayport. The adapter I got works fine with my regular tv but if I connect the surface to my benq monitor which I use for gaming it doesnt show anything. It still says that a cable is connected (might be the trouble ,,out of range"?)
    How can I fix that? Are there any special requirements for the adapter if I wanna use benq monitors?

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  3 года назад +1

      It's almost always the cable. Your monitor is probably running at a higher resolution, and being a gaming monitor a higher refresh rate. So more data is going over the cable... It most likely needs to be a higher spec.

    I know this is a long shot but i need to know how to hook up my Elmo tt -02s and my surface/multi screens I am a college student and I home school. Elmo is a huge product we use in our curriculum. I also have an LG 32 inch monitor that only has 1 HDMI one VGA and one small connection hole that you use to see vcr's hooked up to tv's only these are the newer version. Then my pc tower only has 1 HDMI, 1 VGC, and 4 USB. I was wondering if there is something I can use to give me more adapters to and from my screen and tower they are both 3 months old. Can I even hook my surface to the Elmo. My thoughts were to place the Elmo on my surface screen and put my zoom on the sec screen.

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  3 года назад

      I don't know Elmo at all really, but on searching I see that it appears to be a document camera with a USB connection. So it can be plugged right into the Surface. You could use a USB hub, or a dock to get more USB ports out from the Surface too.
      With your display, if you want to feed in 2 different devices to the one display, you can use a an adapter with your VGA ports - for example, a mini-Display Port to VGA adapter would go from your Surface directly into the VGA port of your monitor. Or you could use a HDMI switch to feed both devices into the HDMI port, and use the switch to move between each device.
      I'd also suggest looking into Office Lens, OneNote and Whiteboard apps to replace the setup altogether. It would be so much easier to work with the documents digitally. And it could be far more flexible and effective too. For example, you'd have pen input with multiple colours, line styles and instant erasing. You would be able to combine the paper document with digital content like images, web pages clips, PDFs and PowerPoint slides. And you could cut, paste, move and resize all of it.

      Thanks for the feedback! On your monitor, first I would make sure that it is running as an extended desktop, rather than duplicating the Surface display. Since the Surface screen is 3:2 it won't duplicate nicely on a 16:9 monitor. Then I would check to see if it is running at the correct resolution - eg 1920 x 1080. It is possible with monitors that support Display Port daisy chaining. If you already have the displays and they don't do daisy chaining (unlikely for all but high-end monitors) then you'd need a display port hub / splitter. From my research it seems that it's cheaper and easier to get a dock. Options would be Surface Dock 1 or 2 or a USB-A Display Link based dock.

    Hi, I have an older surface laptop (model 1769). It has a mini display port. I have two external monitors with HDMI, which I am planning to connect through a docking station. However this docking station is not a Microsoft model, and it has a USB C male port to connect to a laptop.

    Or do I need to get a Microsoft docking station for it to work?
    Thank you in advance for your help!

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  3 года назад

      In my experience that will not work. It is possible to do 2 monitors out over Display Port, but it's complicated. There are other options like USB-A docks, but the Surface Dock is the easiest way to get 2 displays working with your Surface Laptop model. The newer Surface models with USB-C will work with your USB-C dock.

What i am trying to do is connect the miniDP to the Usb C on the docking station so that then it will extend diplay to the monitors. Is there a cable that can do this? Am i asking for too much? Or is it just impossible? Lol idk at this point. Im on a budget. So trying really not to buy the surface dock station.

      There was a Microsoft dongle that could do it - Surface Connect to USB-C - but they discontinued it when they went all USB-C. Technically all the new Surface models do Display Port over USB-C, so not sure if yours could work with a Mini Display Port to USB-C adapter.

      It's not possible to go from Mini-Display Port to USB-C. It works the other way around because USB-C can talk to the display port protocol, but Mini Display Port cannot talk USB-C. You'll need a different docking solution - for example the Surface Dock 1 or 2 would work for your Surface Laptop 1. The alternative is a USB-A to VGA adapter, or a USB-A type dock - they work just fine for most displays. It may be possible to plug your ThinkPad dock into one of your USB-A ports with a USB-A to C adapter - but I can't guarantee that it would work.

    I have a complicated question: My wife has a surface pro 3 and a macbook. Both computers are routed to an HDMI video switch, which goes to a single monitor. This video switch allows her to select one of the computers and send that signal to her single monitor. Now she wants two monitors and I am trying to see if there is something out there that will take either a pc or a mac display signal, split it to two monitors and work in extended display mode for both systems. Ever hear of an adapter like that?

      It is technically possible with Display Port to daisy chain monitors. It's not practical though, and it ends up being easier to get a USB dock. Look for something that suits USB-C and USB-A connections for future proofing.

      You don't need a Surface Dock, but you do need a dock. The USB-C Port can connect you to one screen. A Surface Dock or a USB-C (depending on the model) dock gets you two screens.

    Both are attached to the dock via HDMI -> USB C
    I can get 1 monitor (Doesn't matter which) working fine.
    When I plug in the 2nd monitor, my display cuts out on the first monitor and goes over to the 2nd.
    All 3 monitors show up under the display settings.
    The monitors are identical and both show up in device manager.

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  3 года назад

      Ok, I have some thoughts. What Surface are you using? What resolution and refresh rate for the displays? It does sound to me (guessing here) like you're plugging in an older Surface model with 2x 4K displays. Since the older models could only do 4K at 30hz, so you would need to plug in each monitor on its own and downscale the refresh rate to 30Hz first. The plug them both in and you'll be good to go. Newer models (e.g. Surface Pro 7) handle 2x 4K @60Hz, so if that's you I would be checking cables instead. Isolate and test each cable on its own.

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  3 года назад

      Ok, then that's a different story. Yes, you're not pushing the limits at all. Plucking at straws here... Does your monitor have a Display Port or USB-C? It could be worth trying that instead of HDMI. And when you say "the USB-C docking station," do you mean the Surface Dock 2 (with USB-C display out ports) or another USB-C dock. If the Surface Dock 2 - 2 things: Are you using only the USB-C ports on the back? And also have you tried checking for Windows updates with the dock plugged in?
      Let me know if you're using a generic USB-C dock.
      BTW, If flipping the cables worked, it would only be because the port or cable was dodgy.

      I can't see any reason that this display would not work with Surface. It's 1080p from what I can see and 60Hz. So I would check the cables. Display Port cables are usually pretty reliable, but most times displays don't work because of the cables and adapters.
