I was taught to use a prep on bare wood before staining?
I have to say these are the classiest DIY projects EVER.
No offense to any creators out there, but I don't need Dollar Store decor DIYs.
I need useful storage ideas etc. And the apartment upgrades blew me away!
I WILL be using some of them. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas!

Thanks, Ali's Dad! The cabinet turned out great. One QUESTION, Ali - did you make dad buy new jeans for the post? My dad is exactly like yours and trust me, even his clean jeans look like they could stand on their own. LOL

Hahaha I love this! My dad has a bit of an obsession with thrifting clothes that look new or still have the tags, so there's a good chance this was a brand new Goodwill pair 😂

Amazing ..Thank you for sharing the work with your father. You reminded me of my father who loved handicrafts. Now I realize that I inherited this from him. Peace to his beautiful soul. I miss him so much.

What a great project! Just a tip for you different types of woods will accept the stains differently if you try a wood conditioner on the surface first it might help you!

I definitely wish I would have applied wood conditioner for this. I haven't tried using it before, but I do think it would have helped

My go to is sand, then Minwax pre stain wood conditioner (at least 15 minutes not more than 2 hours) then gunstock stain, then warm satin polyurethane, let it dry, sand it, then add second coat, comes out beautiful every time.

    • @ActuallyAlli
      @ActuallyAlli  Год назад +1

That is good to know! I regret not used wood conditioner for this project. I for sure am going to be using it for all upcoming furniture projects. I'd love to know how the gunstock stain looks! I almost went with that shade

Gorgeous final product! Good call on making new doors. I hate the gap between them on our Ivar. Just a note based on my experience with adding legs to this cabinet: we had to secure it to the wall to prevent tipping. We used a different style of legs, so hopefully you don't have that issue with yours. Again, the cabinet is gorgeous, and you'd never guess it started as a plain pine box.

That's a great tip, the base added some weight, but it's a tad wobbly. I think I will secure it once it gets into its permanent home

This looks great! I use Ivar's as cabinets as well and want to add a top but the tops of Ivar's are typically uneven. How did you even out the top of the Ivar (as is) to add a top? Any tips to smooth it down or build It up?

You didn’t mention where you got the mini miter saw that you were using to cut the mouldings/trim you put on once you got it back to your apartment, can you advise?

So, I know you are trying to show "easy" hacks - but I wonder how much the original cabinet cost from IKEA compared to the cost of building it yourself???

    Not a DIY unless
    1. You have a dad
    2. You have a dad with lots of tools
    3. You have a dad with carpenter skills to measure, cut, and knows what products to use and how to assemble.
This video should be called, ,,"My Dads DIY"

Ms. Sabrina is a negative person! She clearly hasn’t seen your batten and board wall that you did BY YOURSELF! It is absolutely YOUR DIY, he helped you out and life is about learning from our elders. Once you buy your own house, you’ll get all your own tools, I just know it. 😊. When you got back to your apartment, you completed YOUR DIY and kudos for you for even taking it on. Great job!
