Along with everything else, I have always loved Pete's voice-- He did an amazing job at this concert. Drowned was phenomenal as well. --- apparently Pete was so nervous going on, he was physically ill before the show. I'm sure the extra brandys were flowing that night. I believe this is one of the first performances without the members of The Who. Love em' all!! Another Hooligan
I bought the record as soon as it came out and loved it. Every time I've seen Pete play acoustic it's awesome. Drowned and Won't Get Fooled Again are always great when he plays them in this setting.
It;s hard to believe but my ex-husband was an amazing acoustic guitarist...he was from Macedonia and used a lot of ideas from their music, tuned his guitar to "G" (no shit) his wrist movement was unreal and when I heard this from Pete for the 1st time I said "Holy shit' he plays acoustic like you do"! So there are 2 people with those subtle wrists....too bad all our old live original tapes are getting destrpyed....
The Who from The Who Sell Out, Tommy, Live At Leeds, Who's Next, Quadrophenia and Who By Numbers are just incredible. I also love the compilation The Kids Are Alright, with tracks like Long Live Rock and their live show stealing version of A Quick One While He's Away from Rock'n'Roll Circus. Personally i think The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who are the 3 greatest band's ever. They all came out in the early '60s and changed music for the better. Each band has something different to offer and i personally love all of the Beatles music, the Rolling Stones from '65-'74 and the Who from the My Generation album right through to Who Are You. The 3 greatest bands from England. * I would also put the Kinks in there, especially their '60s heyday
I've had the vinyl since its first release and always loved this version. Was not aware a video of the performance existed. So cool, thanks for posting.
We'll be fighting in the streets With our children at our feet And the morals that they worship will be gone And the men who spurred us on Sit in judgment of all wrong They decide and the shotgun sings the song I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin to the changes all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again The change, it had to come We knew it all along We were liberated from the fold, that's all And the world looks just the same And history ain't changed 'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the changes all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again No, no I'll move myself and my family aside If we happen to be left half alive I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky For I know that the hypnotized never lie Do ya Yeah There's nothing in the streets Looks any different to me And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye And the parting on the left Is now the parting on the right And the beards have all grown longer overnight I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin to the changes all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again Don't get fooled again, no, no Yeah Meet the new boss Same as the old boss
John is neither lost nor outclassed, he is playing a defined role. If you doubt his talent, listen to John Williams' 'The Seville Concert'. I challenge Pete Townsend to match that class.
It was posted here in 2010! And it's been available for purchase on Amazon since at least then. I don't think either the book or the movie ever went out of print.
When a baseball manager asked hall of fame pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander if it was ok if young rookie phenom Bob Feller could pitch side by side with him at the all star ⭐️ game Grover saw how great Feller threw then told the manager “ first you better make sure it’s OK with him” I wonder if Pete asked the same thing when he was about to jam with guitar legend John Williams Just for the record they’re both phenomenal!!!!
What the hell happened to John William's guitar in the recording of this historic duet? This bloke's an outstanding classical and classical-rock fusion player, and this golden opportunity to record a collaboration between him and one of rock's best songwriters of all time seems to have been completely muffed.
Not sure what John Williams is doing there, he coulplay Pete off the floor any day but is relegated here to doing three eighths of jack shit. Waste of his talent
I was there. Pete just came on unannounced. It was amazing
I never noticed it before but his voice is like a trumpet totally on key very strong and clear and reed like.
I had this album as a teenager. I bought it after hearing this on the radio. Really showcases Townsend's brilliance.
From what I remember Sting did a great solo version of Message in a Bottle at this show as well. Must have been an amazing show.
Had the privilege of seeing them in this period powerful for a teenager What a band glad too have been so impressionable in the 70s 😁✌️
Thanks so much 😊❤️✌️👍
Who would have known that a powerful rock song such as this would sound so good on acoustic guitar.
very special song !!!
After hearing this version, I think I may even like it better. His voice is so sublime, such a great rhythmic player...
Along with everything else, I have always loved Pete's voice--

Love em' all!! Another Hooligan
He's on record as saying he had some good Jamaican before the performance
Here we are now 2021, has this song ever been so prevalent!!
Now we're on Election Day, UK in 2024 and still very relevant!
And again here in the states in 2024 🤦🏽♂️
Most under rated songwriter and guitarist. Big music bring back shows like this.
one of the best ever on earth
Nobody who knows anything about songwriting, guitar or music “under-rates” Pete Townshend.
Not "under rated"! He's one of the most admired and successful songwriters and guitarists of all time! What a silly comment.
Underrated singer. This is him at his most emotive and it’s pretty much perfect
Nobody who knows anything about music and/or songwriting and/or guitar “under-rates” Peter Townshend.
What a brilliant player.
Unplugged, 10 years before "unplugged" was a thing! Brilliant performance!
Townshend was a FIRST for so many things
Er, cough, cough. Led Zeppelin where doing "unplugged" 10 years before that :)
God i wish i could play guitar like this genius
Which one? 😂
We were one of the first areas to get cable in the Tampa Bay area in the very early 1980's. This was the first show I ever watched. Still love it.
I bought the record as soon as it came out and loved it. Every time I've seen Pete play acoustic it's awesome. Drowned and Won't Get Fooled Again are always great when he plays them in this setting.
No one, no one plays acoustic like Pete.
I keep trying...
I knowwww
It;s hard to believe but my ex-husband was an amazing acoustic guitarist...he was from Macedonia and used a lot of ideas from their music, tuned his guitar to "G" (no shit) his wrist movement was unreal and when I heard this from Pete for the 1st time I said "Holy shit' he plays acoustic like you do"! Or electric for that matter! He's a master at both.
The Who from The Who Sell Out, Tommy, Live At Leeds, Who's Next, Quadrophenia and Who By Numbers are just incredible.

As aggressive as his guitar playing his ,his voice is so vulnerable a beautiful balance
Very relevant just now !
I've had the vinyl since its first release and always loved this version. Was not aware a video of the performance existed. So cool, thanks for posting.
Dave Id ok grazie a te !!
I saw the film when it was released in 82 and it was amazing. I had the vinyl album but lost it years ago.
Looks like he's playing a Gibson J-200 Jumbo acoustic. Brilliant right hand technique and brilliant chord voicing.
Correct, a sunburst model. He is frequently seen playing the natural maple finish variety. I have one, my favorite guitar. Ever.
The best in his own ways
Still brilliant.
Thank you Pete.
Beautiful.
One of Rocks Gods!!
And this is why you know The Who. Genius unmatched
Work of a genius
Brilliant, Pete.
Brilliant.

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution

Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

We don't get fooled again
No, no
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya
Yeah
There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin to the changes all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again, no, no
Yeah
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
Non smetterò mai di ringraziare quest'uomo per tutte le emozioni che mi ha regalato...
Townshend è il più grande genio musicale del Novecento.
Is that’s John Williams with him? My favourite classical player with my favourite rock player doing it organically: heaven.
When this guy joins John and Keith in the great beyond, I'm going to be in the fetal position for weeks.
Just too good!
Absolutely awesome.
we americans can sing this every 4 years
John is neither lost nor outclassed, he is playing a defined role. If you doubt his talent, listen to John Williams' 'The Seville Concert'. I challenge Pete Townsend to match that class.
This is incredible! Thanks so much for posting, the audio and the quality are great!
Gorgeous !
This is incredibly good!❤️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I searched for this song (Or this version) for thirty years.
I'm glad you found it, it's really fantastic
It was posted here in 2010! And it's been available for purchase on Amazon since at least then. I don't think either the book or the movie ever went out of print.
its just kin good !

Nice job man!
Pick up my guitar , just like yesterday 🎸
Greatest rock anthem........
We still haven't learned... we get fooled all the time.
its in the lyrics that make this song we americans can sing this every 4 years
'But you know that the hypnotised never lie, do you?'
Wow - Pete is a talent extraordinaire. Yes , yes I know Williams is a great classical guitarist but he may as well not have been there.
I fear we will be...again and again and again...
What the hell happened to John William's guitar in the recording of this historic duet? This bloke's an outstanding classical and classical-rock fusion player, and this golden opportunity to record a collaboration between him and one of rock's best songwriters of all time seems to have been completely muffed.
It is in there. Low in the mix, but it is there.
Years ago someone, maybe officially???, posted this footage with Williams' playing edited out. It sounded way off.
I am a classical guitar player can I please play very quietly with you on your Loud song?
Is that John Williams with Pete Townsend?
Dude , too funny.....but for sure....✌
And, Pete was so drunk that he fell asleep. Amazing.
John Williams may as well not have been there. You can't hear him at all!
How many people here are imaginig playing this themselves for an audience?
Anybody know what guitar Townshend's playing here?
Henry Swanson a Gibson J200 Jumbo Acoustic :))
Is there an official released version of this?
i dont know....
John Williams looks lost ......and outclassed
Is that John Williams, the classical guitarist?
Kedbuka yes
He could never be outclassed. It's just not his scene. He's a fabulous guitarist though.
Kedbuka i agree.....its a completely different style. think if Townshend attempted classical Flamenco guitar..
He's an unbelievable guitarist. I just wish I could hear him here.
Only 81 million people got fooled. Hopefully it will be less this time around.
Not sure what John Williams is doing there, he coulplay Pete off the floor any day but is relegated here to doing three eighths of jack shit. Waste of his talent
