This version of Drowned has been in my top 10 all time favorite performances by any group or artist since the Secret Poilceman's Ball album came out around 1980?? By the look of Pete's guitar flip at the end, I'd say he was pleased. Kind of like hitting a home run. IMO the whole performance is a triumph for Pete, and I give John Williams major credit for adding texture to a song he's never heard before.
0:00 Pinball Wizard 3:13 Drowned 7:37 Won't Get Fooled Again (with John Williams) Audio ripped from the 12" Vinyl EP "The Secret Policeman's Ball" which sounds a lot better than the original audio. Especially on Drowned as the original audio was pitched too low. Now you can hear it in the correct key as it was played. The video for Pinball Wizard and Won't Get Fooled Again is taken from the official DVD release of the show. The footage for Drowned, I'm not actually sure where the original source is from. I only have it on a bootleg compilation DVD. I've used AI frame interpolation to make the video play at smooth 60fps since the original footage was a little choppy looking.
Such a great performance, thank you for including the "missing" song.Again, FullConcerts100 many thanks for all your work on The Who! So many bootlegged DVDs are very pixelated. Just great to see someone working hard to improve/correct the video/audio from all these footage!
This is a superlative performance of someone at the very top of their game; world class songwriting, virtuoso guitar playing and rich vocals. This performance makes a good case that Townsend is the greatest of all time.
Isn't this version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" the one where he later said he had had so much brandy before he came out that he fell asleep during the song?
@@sratus he said he did..Williams is one of the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century..Townshend could have at least showed up for the gig sober..it was a charity event

A class video. A revelation about Pete’s acoustic playing and singing and in turn about his songwriting skills. He truly is one of the greats.
Drowned is simply sublime here ....and that voice 👌

I absolutely loved listening to this show. I saw The Who live many many times but never got to Pete solo. Long Live Rock!
Amazing stuff! Always loved Pete's acoustic solo renditions and this is a classic show.
Bloody great accoustic guitar player. Bloody great songwriter
Wow I’ve just traveled back over 40 years in time. Still sounds great. And so prescient.
Stellar rhythm. I actually enjoy Pete's voice more than Roger's. Great stuff here.

What a GEM. Thanks for this!

the origin of "unplugged"- such a stunning show that years later when MTV went looking for a gimmick...
This is the performance that made me fall in love with Townsend's playing and singing. I actual prefer his voice over Daltrey's.
The entire 79 Secret Policeman's Ball is great, Pete's set and Joan Armatrading's set stand out
Great job and thanks! It's a shame this never was put out on CD, my LP is in pretty sad shape :(
Awww yeah...this looks great!!!
so great, so cool
How fxxxing good is .that and is that John Williams in there.......SKY
Awww too good
Anyone know if it's been put out on cd or mp3 download? I've been searching forever.
Ha, I had this album. Really loved the version of Drowned. God I’m old. 👍🤪🏳️🌈
I had this album too. That doesn't make you old my friend!!
I have this album, too. But my B&O turntable hasn’t been plugged in for 30+ years.
Me too. Back when vinyl was final.
You may be old but it beats the alternative
@@russellburgess684 I’ve been both, it’s a toss up. 🙃
How do you think he does it I don't know
I can hear Richie Haven’s influence in his playing.

pretty much..as far as I know he would be the first to admit that he blew this gig pretty bad
@@dougthompson8226 What? At what point does he blow the gig? It's great, Drowned particularly is stunning.
he was drunk
@@dougthompson8226 Wish I could play and sing like that when I'm drunk. Do you think it sounds bad? He certainly doesn't fall asleep.

pete was drunk and he sucked
Doesn't sound drunk to me. Maybe your drunk!

@@Blontified what about Segovia ?
Maybe he was drunk.
You're stupid. And Pete can sober up.
We'd all still step on your face to see him play.
Amazingly lucid performance considering he was in the midst of a booze and speedball frenzy around this time
