We traveled twice, once in 1998 and again in 2002. Really horrible experiences and never did that again. Last year I had been contemplating flying via delihi on air india business class, thinking Tata may have improved things , but my friends and family told me nothing has changed since it is the same staff that used to work for government. Tata will have to fire all those people and build a professional team from ground up for things to improve. Last year we flew Etihad and qataar on business class and it was absolutely amazing

Hi Vidya, sad to know that you had to go through such a terrible experience this time as well. We have been avoiding Air India since the past several years only because of these bad reviews we got from others, specially the part where they don't keep you informed about delays or cancellations. We have a small kid and it is difficult when such situations arise. I really hope they try to improve their service because as you said their fares are really good. I noticed that you said your son is coming to CA. We are located in CA now, is he going to be in San Francisco?

Many recent delays are due to their structural issues within air india, Tata air india stil don’t have their own in house maintenance division, they have to completely relay on (AIESL) air india engineering service ltd, which was not part of the sale. They’re setting up one in BLR on their own and it takes time.

Never again until that’s the only option!

Feel your frustration 😔. London to Cochin on AI... entertainment was not working, not even the live map. Had to request ▶️, plea▶️, demand ▶️ and then yell to get a blanket which means AC was in full blast 😜. Food and service was really good.
There was a medical emergency on board and must say was BRILLIANTLY handled by the crew both on board and after landing. Our brewing frustration turned to accolades 👏.
Our checked in luggage was not even loaded from London. They delivered it home after 2 days though in tact.
This AC not working and pax kept onboard is becoming frequent nowadays with AI. Once, flight was on the tarmac at LHR ready for takeoff Captain announces due "congestion in air traffic on the European corridor there will be a delay for one hour".... promptly AC switched off 🤷. Feeling let down by Tata 😔
Delhi airport transit can be traumatic, we took the assistance of porter service as layover was less than two hours, that helped. Now we make sure we take longer transit time if via Delhi. Less layover time they can't transfer all luggage onto the connecting flight. Sometimes they have cargo or backlog of cargo to be shipped and if not delivered on time will incur huge loss to the airline. So baggage is compromised.
Having said that, we faced unpleasant situations irrespective of the airlines. If it was food on one it was transfer desk on another or luggage broken and no compensation whatsoever. Can you believe we had to bundle up the contents (dhobi kettu) and leave the airport.
Travel is becoming stressful. Elders, even if you are able bodied please avail the wheelchair facility. Get in mentioned in the airline booking especially if transiting. If not between airport service and airline service you can miss between cup and lip !!
Keeping 🤞 Allz well that ends well...,🙏

Entertainment system was virtually down. The staff in the flight were literally begging us not to make it as an issue when complained about the inflight service. Onboarding, off-boarding and airport services were probably i have ever faced in the last 25+ years.

Oh my, no idea why they have to be rude. Have to say that our flight attendant on the Delhi to DC flight was very nice. The people in front of us wouldn’t move their seat to upright position during meals, which left my daughter little room. Every time he would talk to them (without us saying anything) whenever he was giving out the meals, waited till they changed their seat. He insisted that they do that every time. That was really nice of him.

I used Air India back in the days but not anymore. I’m pretty sure the management knows. This time the new thing was their customer service AI was sending us messages on whatsapp. We were like, “Oh that’s so nice of them.” It sent us reminders about the check in, message that our baggage has arrived and which carousel to pick it up etc on the inbound flights. But all that stopped after the kochi to delhi flight. The last message was that our baggage has been received at delhi and to take a survey about that flight. After that nothing at all coz they also know that they messed up the baggage. The right thing to do would have been to let us know that some of our luggage was missing and how to file the lost baggage report. But nothing. They also didn’t send a survey about the delhi to dc flight because for sure they know how people are going to respond to that survey.

Ok. We received an email notification from AI about a 2 hr flight delay. We went to the a/p assuming the same. There was an additional 1.5 hr delay after the 2 hr delay we were notified about. The excuses were - we are cleaning up the inside of the airline. About 1 hr later, we see the flight crew walking into the aircraft like celebrities...and 45 mins after that, the passengers were allowed to board. Worst airline !!

We booked with kuwait airways (another airline that i swore i won’t go again after a bad experience from JFK in 2013) in December on their supposedly first flight from DC. Last minute they bailed out saying they are postponing the flight launch . 🤷‍♀️ For food we mainly took protein bars, the nutella snack pouches etc. The food at Delhi airport is very good. So at least you can eat a good meal at Delhi if you have time.

I recently canceled 2 roundtrip tickets (booked for October this year) from SFO to Kochi and back. Had to cancel it because we had to travel urgently to Kochi within a day due to the unexpected demise of my spouse's dad. So, we asked AI for the refund for the October tickets we had booked earlier. In order for AI to issue the refund, we had to provide them evidence of the fact that we spoke "the truth" about why we had to cancel the October tickets. Providing the proof would save us $250 cancelation fee per ticket. And, here are the documents they asked from us. Copies of 1) Death certificate of my spouse's dad 2) Our passports 3) Our OCI cards 4) Our marriage certificate. Are you all laughing yet?? All we wanted was refund for our 2 tickets. Never Fly Air India. We also experienced what she shared in the video above. The refund process was like eating thorns spread on a rotten cake. My lessons learned -> Don't fly on Air India for 2 reasons. 1) The terrible travel experience. 2) If I don't fly on AI, I won't need to ask for a refund. Oh..I forgot. Its been almost 4 weeks since I asked for the refund, and I still have not received it. I am hoping they won't ask me for any more documents. FYI...apparently, most of the old aircrafts in the AI fleet will be replaced by newer aircraft. Will I fly in it going forward? Never again. Not worth it at all.

Until the old set of non productive staff moves out or get replaced with fresh new employees, air India will be the same. There in no point of patriotism that should be considered. This is a service and if the employees are not bothered to service the people who is using the service, better use other better aircraft carriers for the time being. I wish Tata’s all the best to correct this issues.

You do get what you pay for with Air India, unfortunately. In the last 28 years that I've been flying to Kerala from the US, I've found that transitting in the Middle East is the absolute best thing to do. Whether it's DXB, AUD, DOH or anywhere, they're so much more organized. And you don't have to go through customs, collect luggage, and re-check in. You can just sit there and wait in peace. The other thing I would highly recommend to anyone going on any flight is to buy travel insurance. I never travel anywhere without it. It helps not just with baggage delay or loss but also with flight delays. It also helps with unexpected health issues and rebooking needs that arise as a result. Just add that into your budget for travel. Yes, it makes it slightly more expensive but it is worth every penny, trust me. You don't have to buy it through the airline either. You can get good rates (and good service) from AIG or Allianz.

In summary: DC to Delhi flight on Air India had bad food and the entertainment system was not working, but otherwise uneventful. Then bad experience at Delhi airport (which I am assuming was nothing to do with Air India flight from DC to Delhi). The domestic flight from Delhi to Kochi was delayed (which I am assuming is a problem with the Indian domestic segments). Please share what was wrong with food on flight from DC to Delhi. For example, was it undercooked? Bland? Not enough food? I am not endorsing Air India… but this story has a lot of holes.

Looks like you didn’t watch the full video. The Delhi to DC flight was also delayed for the same reason as the domestic flight. The Delhi to DC flight didn’t load half of the passengers’ luggage. There were multiple issues trying to track the missing baggage and with the delivery. Food was bad because i didn’t even know what the heck I was eating. No taste. No other way to describe it. Hope you can watch the full video to understand all the missing pieces of the story.

This past December we booked on their inaugural flight from DC (we thought if they are starting a new service at least in the beginning they will be good) but in November they let us know that they postponed their launch till Feb! I had a similar experience with Qatar Airways last time when I went to India for vacation. They missed all four pieces of our luggage. After calling them constantly for days, they brought them home to thrissur after 2 weeks. Because I anticipated the situation, I packed all my son's clothes in our carry on luggage . When I lodged the complaint with Transport Canada, Qatar Airways compensated me with $300. Air Canada is no better, they missed my luggage every time I flew. Thankfully it happened when I came back to Canada. . None of the airlines are good these days. Everything has changed drastically after the pandemic for some weird unknown reason!
Air Canada has become too cheap they do not give passengers any food in their domestic planes or in the planes to the US. Their food is the worst! They serve non-vegetarian only to the people sitting in the front. When did reach the back of the craft, they'd say "you have no choice, we ran out of everything else" because the people sitting in the back are people who did not pay extra for the seats in the front.!

I had same issue with Qatar airways in Jan. They cancelled flight 3 hours after we boarded the plane due to technical reasons. Then they lost my suitcase even though the flight never took off. I missed my flight to Singapore from Kochi and was never paid a dime as compensation. Airlines know they can win each time of our hard earned money. They don’t care.

I don’t want my cynicism to get the better of me!
I know the lure for us is a ‘deal’ fare and while traveling with family, everything adds up. The big budget is airline fare. I just got back too and had a pretty seamless experience with everything and yes flew from and arrived at D.C.
Vidya, I feel your pain sister and the craziness of travel One will need another week to recoup and it’s not just jet lag right?
I hope the Tatas with their great reputation are able to turn things around and give people value for flying with them. The diaspora state side is starved for choice. If they tweak things and begin to make those changes they will have loyal travelers switching and flying with them. Let wisdom prevail 🙏🏼

No one returning the plastic tray to the next PASSENGER. After the security check no one to guide you.

Tickets were cheaper. That’s the reason. They should fire everyone working at the Delhi Airport and hire people who actually want to work. Plane from Chicago to Delhi and Delhi to Chicago are from the 80’s, from crew I heard they are slowly overhauling few planes at a time while trying to run a business. Food was 12:19 good, entertainment didn’t work at all, kids were pissed all throughout, but nothing mechanical happened like what’s happening in the newer Boeing planes. Crew were good to us. Now the people traveling on this plane, yes us Indians, no manners, no hygiene, no consideration to other passengers. They shit, then wet a bunch of napkins , not the tissues wipe their asses and flush them or leave them on the floor. The ones they flush clogged the toilet and clogged them and make them unusable. Grow up, when you’re are in a new country or in public, please consider others, do all that shit the when you get home. PLEASE!
