I have found Charles Tyrwhitt to be the best value for shirts and it’s a UK brand. 3 natural fiber shirts for $99 is pretty good plus their shirts have 31 inch arm lengths that I need and is very hard to find elsewhere. I tried Amazon’s brand and they are less expensive but the collar is not nearly as good. Great video, thanks.

They are a great brand to purchase your shirts from and I daresay there really isn't anyone else above them in price that you really don't to consider if you can't afford. My favorite shirts of theirs are of course the Egyptian cotton ones. My favorite shirt however has slightly discolored for whatever reason. I don't think it's anything to do with the quality of the shirt itself, I probably touched something.

Great counterpoint to the other video! Great shoutout to Costco, I haven’t bought anything sartorial from Costco, but swear by their wine selection, really well-sourced and extremely aggressively priced! I tend to look for secondhand accessories on eBay, which given the current “dress down” attitudes, can be found for an absolute steal, despite high quality and provenance. I’ve actually started to make my own fragrances at home using formulas available on this platform, and also allow for a bespoke scent! Love the new backgrounds in this video, keep it up!

Great video, Ash! We have a similar shopping philosophy. I combine the high-end ( or usually medium- end) with the cheaper accessories. In truth, its not even about not being able to afford it with me, its my sense of principle, practicality and dislike of brand-name hustle. The way I look at it, even if i had the money why pay more for things I can get at a reasonable price. I wouldn't pay $200+ on jeans even if I was a billionaire. Its just the principle of it, and I'm not getting caught up in a label con. Also, like you, I buy my underwear in a three pack of Boxer brief Hanes and they cover my ass just fine.

I buy used ones on eBay and they’re great for work. You’re so right about so-called niche fragrances. I have never found anything with good value. I agree. Aramis Havana is amazing for £20 and beats many higher priced fragrances into embarrassment! Thank you very much for this very informative video Ash 🙏🏼

I buy underwear from local manufacturers - who actually produce in the country. There are indeed a few left. And by doing so I can help them stay afloat, after all they have been around for decades. That means: I have saved local jobs, the quality is alright - and I don't have to face the doctor or the nurse with red ears should I ever be admitted to hospital...

Check if you have an outlet store in your area. I was lucky to have 'The Savile Row Company' outlet store close to where I lived. I wore their shirts for years doing a similar job to you Ash. Staple white and light blue excellent quality shirts at a fraction of the London price, seconds for under £5, with minor mistakes no one will spot. If you are in the North of England perhaps look at Barbour outlet. If you are in the States check Old Navy. Ask stores when their 'price change day is,' up to 70% off at times. Thanks Ash.

I always buy Gap Japanese selvedge jeans on Ebay - wear well and cost me between £10 and £25 as new. I honestly can't see a lot (any) of difference between them and more expensive branded jeans. Be careful as the nearly new, do shed their indigo colouring. So don't visit friends and family and sit on their sofas!

I have found chinos and jeans from George/Asda to be very good value and an excellent fit for my substantial, middle aged behind. They have a touch of elastine and wear well. I take the point about ethics and I agree however, these items are made in the same factory (in Indonesia) as M&S and some GAP items. Both companies have firm ethical policies (which you can read online). That eases my conscience a little but you make a very good point. We all need to be mindful of the effect that cheap fashion has on others - not usually good for them.

My sales soared when I ceased to use the word “cheap” and replaced it with “the popular priced”. This changed the whole approach and attitude of all those in attendance, lowered the stress level, and created an even playing field in conversation. It re-qualified the perceived level of the product of “poorly made” and allowed my buyers own real opinion to be most important. They now purchased without reservation.

For me I have started buying shirts made to measure abroad. If you get the measurements rights and request the cut such as French, you can even have you initial embroidered in the cuff. I pay around £50 per shirt with the usual discount codes. They generally take around 3 weeks to make and ship from Asia.

    Top stuff, Ash.
My personal philosophy is a sort of mix and match/pick your battles tactic.
I happily wear a Next sports jacket that I found some years ago at one of their outlet stores (you probably know the one 😀).
I team this with a Crew Clothing Oxford shirts (same outlet facilty AND in a sale) and I have found modestly priced smart jeans from Hollister, which suit my shape.
Add a pocket square made from one of my mother's old head scarves (following your tips, Ash) and voila!
But I do need to go and try on some different shirt manufacturers. I am an odd shape and always need to get them altered, which is costly when you alter all your shirts.
The one thing that I insist on spending the large part of my budget on is footwear. Loake being my preferred choice. They suit my foot shape and are of good quality for a sensible price.
Throw in tweed and sports jackets found in local charity shops and I am on my way to Chap Nirvana whilst living within a modest budget 😀 😀

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  Год назад +1

We are following the same path sir. Loake is hard to beat at the price, but Cheaney is a pleasing step-up in quality and not too far adrift on price.

I live in a small, rather affluent little tourist community with a large population of older, retired people. The thrift and charity shops here are a goldmine, as widows simply donate the clothing of their husbands. I think it never even occurs to them that many of these items have resale potential, or else they are so well-heeled that they simply don't care to resell and would rather donate to charity.
A Hugo Boss suit for $10.00. A Canali sport coat for $5.00. Ties by Brooks Brothers, Zegna, Hermes, and Ferragamo for $2.00 each.
Pocket squares I buy either directly from manufacturers in China, or have my wife construct from pieces of old Liberty of London women's blouses that can be had for $2.00-$3.00 at these local charity shops.
I don't know who is buying pocket squares for $75.00 each, or ties for more than $200.00, but it's certainly not me.
As a retired secondary school teacher, paying full retail for most quality men's clothing is simply "above my pay grade", as the saying goes.

Wonderful video and I do concur with just about everything you suggest however I do think another area you can consider cheap style options is socks and I also have to differ on the matter of neckties I personally have found that I can acquire quality name brand ties ( Brooks Brothers Ralph Lauren) on eBay or esty for right around the same price that you talk about in the video other than those two areas I think the video is truly informative thanks once again for sharing.

On your remarks on shirts and chinos: Yes, but...
Cheaper shirts, even when they come from more traditionally oriented menswear outlets, such as CT, tend to lack when it comes to the collar: especially kent collars of this pedigree tend to be short, stumpy, no flattering curvature whatsoever - screaming "department store". I would say: before buying a cheaper shirt, pay close attention to the collar area.
Chinos: true. But it's hard to find classically proportioned chinos with a slightly higher rise off the peg. eBay has been my friend here, back when my budget was very tight.
I've never ever bought a tie, ascot, pocket square new. Always eBay, always pre-owned. A lovely, well maintained Drake's tie for under 20€ is no problem if you have your search filters set up properly ;)
I wholeheartedly support your take on fragrances. Especially stylish Englishmen have a vast domestic back catalogue to choose from. Not only Dunhill, but there is Geo. F. Trumper, Penhaligon's, Floris, D.R. Harris, Taylor of Old Bond Street,... Great fragrance houses that cover a wide variety of budgets.
    Cheers from Germany!

Zero shirts off the rack fit me. Never have my entire life. I have an 18.5” neck which equates to XXL, the rest of my upper body is between XL and L sized depending on the brand. Off the rack shirts have always either been collar open or massive tents that I had to get tailored so much that they were half remade. Recently I discovered a few online made-to-measure shirt services and it’s changed my life. I can get high quality shirts that fit for the same price as one might pay at Macy’s, and no tailoring needed. The only catch is that it takes a few weeks to receive a new shirt, and with planning ahead hasn’t been a problem at all.

I'm mostly agreeing. 100 pounds for a pair of pants is indeed ridiculous, and though a 250 pound t and a shirt is probably a wonderful thing, a 35 pound tyrwitt shirt won't look much different. My own weakness is for a nice pocket square. Like shoes, I think they last for years so its worth spending more for something you really love, which for me are fine art squares from rampley. I've spent more money than I want to think about on those suckers, but there is just something about walking around knowing you have a scrunched up masterpiece in your pocket that makes you stand a bit taller. I fully accept this as a character flaw!

Dear @Ash, I'm surprised you wear polyester ties, which usually is frowned upon. Nobody should dress only to impress others, but I would rather wear no tie then wearing a cheap looking tie.
But if there's no difference visible, then why not?
What's your opinion: How obvious is a polyester tie?

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 года назад

I would generally agree, but I am always prepared to save a pound/dollar when the opportunity presents itself - all the more funds to spend on the special things in life.
I have never spent a lot on ties, as the extra cost is barely noticed as the tie is not worn next to the skin. I am more than happy to go cheap on my knitted ties, as they look and feel good for the extra cheap price.

well, you forgot one very important thing: chemicals in the clothing. Especially in everything that will touch your skin. I would never buy the cheapest shirt or jeans. Everything that is constantly on my skin has to have some sort of a label that it's not full of harmful chemicals. And you still can find these pieces for a reasonable price.
And underwear … oh man … sorry, this is really the worst advice I've ever heard from you! Wearing cheap underwear is such a no-go! No woman will have respect for a man who is wearing cheap old briefs. It's unsexy as hell.

The bulk of my every day clothing are either from GAP, NEXT and before they shut down Samuel Windsor. Jeans, Chinos, Shirts, jumpers are all from their shops or websites, half my Shoes (Boat shoes, black Oxfords, a pair of Brown Derbies, a pair of Chukka Boots are from NEXT & Samuel Windsor. They offer pretty good quality for little cost, especially when a sale is on and I wear them most of the time. I do splash and the buy into Trusted heritage brands Like Loake, Crockett&Jones, Barbour, Burberry (I have one of their rain coats from the 80's), Allsaints, Sunspell, Thomas Pink(A few Shirts & a Tie), Turnbull&Asser(A Office Blue Shirt) Levi, Cordings Piccadilly Tweed Sports Jackets. My Smart Casual attire (makes up about 15 % of my wardrobe) that I reserve only for those occasions where I want to look casual but in reality, I have put alot of effort and expense. But sometimes, all I need are the quality core items shoes, sports jacket, a nice watch. The chinos/jeans & shirt/polo can be cheaper items as they become automatically elevated if they fit right and in good condition.
