I wonder if those spectators would work with similarly colored jeans (tan or gray) for more of a casual outfit? Such a classy looking shoe. I would have NEVER considered owning a pair until this video. Well done, Sir!
Excellent. I had purchased a black pair of spectators with burgundy insets from AE a number of years ago and again last year a brown pair with with white insets from AE as they revisited some of their archival styles ( and were specially made, small batch). Very comfortable and attractive and well constructed , in my opinion. I have not worn the the new pair yet since they arrived in the fall but looking forward to their maiden voyage this spring.
As l always say Preston is great presenting and developing a topic. In my case I'm not sure if I'm ready for Spectators but I love them. Great video. Cheers.
Hi Preston, thank you so much for the video. You answered a question to me before I was about to write an email to you. I'm planning a video documentary on my profession (I work in Finance). This will have a reference for the period of Al Capone and now I know what I will be wearing when hosting the video during that sequence. Your video means a brilliant source of information for me and gave me a valuable guidance. plus, an incredible well-researched insight into the evlution of style. I shall refer to thee as my style Consultant and place a link to your channel. Thank you very much for the video, Preston.
I think more men would wear old school suits and shoes if it wasn't for the general public and the popularity of casual hoodies and tracksuits especially in England here that's all people seem to wear but I've managed to build up a small collection of vintage suits with wider lapels and many vintage ties some I got for 50p in charity shops
I finally know what tap-dancing shoes are officially called! Had no idea they were associated with gangsters or adultery though. My favourite outfit I wear to horse races is a black pinstriped suit with black and white spectators
I was hoping you might go over how to polish spectators in this video. That’s the thing holding me back from buying a pair. You certainly don’t want to get pigmented polish on the canvas or lighter colored section of the shoe, but neutral polish doesn’t seem like it could keep the shoes looking as sharp over time.
I would create a template traced on cardboard to place over the areas you don’t want to contaminate with a pigmented polish. Use a light adhesive tape (painter’s tape comes to mind) to secure the template in place. Polish to your desired shine. Save the template for your next shine session.
I love spectator shoes! I have worn them off and on for many years. You should remove the buttons on your jacket and have a reputable shoe cobbler re-dye them for you Preston. Still lookin' sharp! Thanks so much! Lisa
As it happens, Preston quite likes the look of these buttons as you can see in our video about acceptable wear and tear :) www.gentlemansgazette.com/clothing-wear-and-tear/?Spectator%20Shoes%20%28Correspondent%2C%20Two-Tone%29%20%26%20How%20To%20Wear%20Them
I love your work. I purchased 2 correspondent shoes last week. I haven't worn them because I don't know how to clean the white/light colored parts. I libe in Africa, and we have a lot of dust here. Please can you educate me how I can clean these shoes.?
Hey, those are Rafael’s “colorful dog shoes”… lol (referring to GG strange island shoe review). I personally like the two tone spectators from strange island, so much I purchased them. I had to remove those red laces like Preston and replace them with the Belvedere grey ones; they look smooth now. G. Gazette you guys are on point; thanks
late to the video but today I got a pair of Winthrop spectator shoes. Solid White with blue laces and leather. No Broaging which I don't mind. I can't wait to wear them with my very light grey linen suit jacket (Ralph Lauren) and off white dress pants this summer. I have lots of choices as far as color goes and style never does out of fashion.I already have the cologne to wear as well.
Preston, you have inspired me to invest in a pair of C&J canvas/leather spectators. Any pro tips on cleaning the canvas sections? Do you have a video on brown summer suits? 😉
thanks for the info always great how you guys make a quality video about every subject really inspiring! since i started watching gg i now came very far with the classic menswear i have my first harris tweed suit i have a few vintage jackets bought from(tweedmansvintage uk) i have my first pare of leather brogue shoes from (loake) dessert boots from (clarks) a few cardigans from merino wool a lambswool faireisle slipover from wiliam lockie some decent shirts from charles tyrwhitt and hawkes and curtis just orderd a field jacket from spier and mackay im really feeling at home with this style of dressing! thanks alot!!!
I love the look! I hope to be able to buy a pair one day, but I am curious about polishing. How do you polish the dark portions without ruining the canvas or light colored leather/suede?
Its also related to the pachuco style of shoe. Many mambo dancers in Mexico today still get their bespoke Pachuco Spectator shoes to their events. what would i give for a pair of spectator boots
These are a type of shoe I've recently become interested in. My choice though is for black & red shoes. I've managed to find a pair, though & will be getting them soon. Is there any historical precedent for that colour combination?
What was always facinating for me is that Gatsby (a stereotypical 20s character) is always depicted in a suit with spectator shoes and it does work well.
to me, specs are like the classical "air jordan" , very flashy, and an attention grabber i own one, i wore them in my 9th grade xmas party and prom. my mates are astonished with the shoe as they've never seen that shoe style before. i even saw some randos staring at my shoes as i commute on my way to school, and as i walk to my room lol
If anyone has a minute, I'm writing a book set in the late 1940s and there's a pair of shoes of some significance as we see them purchased and then later on the body after the man is killed. Would these shoes be worn to the office? I'm drawn to these visually b/c of the white + blood stains, and the "cad" reputation would honestly fit.
I really want a pair of herringbone or checked spectator boots. I think they'd go really well with the dark jeans and leather jacket I usually wear. Unfortunately I can't find any near me within my price point.
If you have a shoulder holster, make sure it harmonizes with your belt and shoes. If you use a revolver, make sure it matches colors with your watch. For example, if you have a gold watch and your pistol is stainless steel, you’ll look like an unsophisticated rube!
Preston’s ensemble is absolutely fantastic! The GG crew really walk the talk. This will be a dress shoe spring, I just made up my mind about it.
As a woman I so appreciate your videos.
Go gentlemen..dress well , we love it.
I am happy that you mentioned the association with dance. Spectator style tap shoes are the best kind of tap shoe out there!
A Friday video with Preston puns? Now this is a great way to start the weekend!
I wonder if those spectators would work with similarly colored jeans (tan or gray) for more of a casual outfit? Such a classy looking shoe. I would have NEVER considered owning a pair until this video. Well done, Sir!
Planning to get another two tone shoe 👞! Just love that beige/ cream look! Thanks for displaying it!

I have three pairs. Some tips about preparation before wearing and keeping them clean would be interesting. Not shoes for a muddy field.
Use Crep Protect
@@jadenyuki3138 Thanks. All very high tech. I wonder how they used to manage in the old days.

The sand suede/brown box calf semi-brogue pair referenced at 09:07 is my pair, made by Wayman Bespoke.

brits love those track suits
Yay! Finally a spectator guide!
I finally know what tap-dancing shoes are officially called!
Had no idea they were associated with gangsters or adultery though.
My favourite outfit I wear to horse races is a black pinstriped suit with black and white spectators
I'm looking to get a good pair of tan and white wingtip spectators for my summer outfits.

I would go slow with a cream or wax polish and use a sponge q-tip close to the edge if needed.
I wear these types of shoes a lot & I use masking tape to cover up areas I am not polishing
I have a pair of vintage spectators from Allen Edmonds as seen at 12:23 in the video. Ebay for the win.
I love spectator shoes! I have worn them off and on for many years.

You should buy waterproof shoe sprays so even if dirt gets on them it will just fall right back off or try neutral shoe polish
I have 3 pairs of Allen Edmonds Spectators...they always get noticed and commented on...

Al Capone rocked the black & white spectators back in the day
This was such an amazing look! I’m obsessed with that tie and couldn’t quite make out where you got it from. Can you please tell me where it’s from?
Great presentation Preston. Not my style of shoes but I found the video informative.

perfect timing. been wanting a pair of black and white weejuns. i appreciate this!

Do you have a video on brown summer suits? 😉
Excellent video. I have a pair of brown leather and tweed wingtip oxfords and they are a nice casual option
I have an all white buckskin wingtips style. I like it with white linen trousers in summertime. It is still being made by Church's Shoes
The English language in all its glory...thank you Mr Schlueter!

I love to wear the Spectator Shoes and they fit perfectly on my foot. I got my spectator from the Lethato brand.

In The Flintstones, spats were worn over bare feet on formal occasions
I love the look! I hope to be able to buy a pair one day, but I am curious about polishing. How do you polish the dark portions without ruining the canvas or light colored leather/suede?
You polish very carefully. That's it. There really isn't a better way to go about it unfortunately.
Where can I find these spectator shoes. Would love to own a pair
Fantastic video, will you make a review about the MYRQVIST shoes or Morjas? They seem to be pretty good for the price and have a nice look
What an awesome video!! Always loved the look of Spats, especially growing up seeing mobsters wearing them
And like the video says Ik its not the right phrase but I just love how it sounds haha
I have a big thing for leather and wool or canvas shoes and boots.
Its also related to the pachuco style of shoe.
Many mambo dancers in Mexico today still get their bespoke Pachuco Spectator shoes to their events.
what would i give for a pair of spectator boots
Great outfit. I would wear it in the fall to winter area.
The important question that's not covered here though is with all leather uppers, what's the best way to polish them?
Can I wear black slacks, a grey vest, a brown dress jacket, yellow shoes, and a yellow bow tie?
Really enjoyed the video, thank you Preston, great work as always! :)
Beautifull video. Changing colour
Excellent review as always.
My spectators are one of my favorites.
thank you lord voldemort for the info!! really appreciate it.
I have two pairs one black the other is brown

Harry Truman seemed to wear these a lot. I plan on having a Harry Truman Day soon!
You may have answered this is a previous video. Preston, where are you glasses from? Thank you .
Preston, I love your shoes. Very sharp
I enjoyed spectating this video.
Thats brown and white derby spectators are beautiful
Essencially, spectator shoes are the adidas of the 1910s
What was always facinating for me is that Gatsby (a stereotypical 20s character) is always depicted in a suit with spectator shoes and it does work well.
Love Spectator shoes!!!
If you want to see some cool saddle shoes, check out the spikes on PGA golfers Justin Thomas and Billy Horschel.
I have a pair of blue and white and I wear them with a pair of blue dark jeans
Can you wear a pair of spectators with shorts? Or is that a no go?
Any suggestions on where to find a good pair in the UK?

Please launch a _Cad's Gazette_ just for styles associated with rakes, toffs, and bounders.
I would like a pair i just know that i will stain the canvas the first attempt at polishing
What brands would you recommend?
Can you successfully wear them with jeans
Those female saddle shoes were scholastic cheerleaders shoes in my time.
Need a second opinion about reverse position between White & Black Spectators.

Black n brown could look nice with a black, gray, or navy pinstripe suit.
Preston is the Best.

I really want a pair of herringbone or checked spectator boots. I think they'd go really well with the dark jeans and leather jacket I usually wear. Unfortunately I can't find any near me within my price point.
I think it’s making a comeback, I know the two-tone Penny Loafers are here to stay.

Stacy Adam's, Paul Fedrick, 👍🏽👍🏽🖐🏽 🌟
I love the gangster look.😃
Isn't Lobb one of the oldest cobbler in Great Britain. I knew that Preston was give us a pun.
They are a pain to polish without getting polish on the fabric
After hearing that British lore I need me a pear of corespondent kicks.

I reckon that wingtip shoes would be even better without the engravings on them .

I prefer spats. But admittedly, they are firmly out of style.
Except for high school marching bands, which typically look like something John Philip Sousa’s band would wear.
Interesting, in my language a "correspondent" is a news reporter.
I wish to see more of Raphael...
I'm not brave or confident enough to wear such shoes, plain old Brown or Tan Brogues do me just fine.
They look spectacular, but... I think it's too much for me at this point. I have get comfortble with a hat first.
My buddy calls his crocs his brogues.
