6:31 MUCH THANKS for clearly pointing out this difference re: the fact that the cine mod Helios lenses, etc, do not compress the image...They are COOL, and have a great vintage look, but they are not compressing the image...
I love "anamorfaking." The best way to test if you really want to shoot with the Anamorphic look. I've been anamorfaking since film riot made a video explaining anamorphic lenses and Vid Atlantic filters. Even that $60 something filter was too expensive so I made it myself.
The best look in this whole video is your hairstyle! Never tried an anamorphic lens nor any anamorfake modification. But I am really interested in the concept and filmmaking energy behind it. Excited to learn about how you fake the distortion. As distortion, breathing, variable squeeze and vignetting are the traits I am looking for in Anamorphic lenses. The best example I found so far is the Elite Anamorphic 24mm. The trick in getting wider field of view is questionable. I now got a 6mm lens for MFT and that's really wide. So using that with a really wide aspect ratio might come close to the widest anamorphic lens there is... Is it the SLR magic lens with a wide angle adapter?
I'm a big fan of the anamorphot and vormax adapters. Focus through and it gives an entire anamorphic lens set. You can even get 1.3x anamorphic adapters and use anamorfake additions to exacerbate the look. It sucks that you have to shoot wide, but stopping down one or two stops still gives a very nice look.
Literally the only aspect I like of anamorphic is the bokeh. Not a fan of streak flares or distortion. In the director's commentary of Gone Girl, Fincher tells how they shot with spherical and then added the streaks in post. To each their own! Lots of Hollywood movies are filmed spherical and cropped from a 16:9 sensor to a 2.39 ratio. So I wouldn't think of it as losing 25% of the pixels as Tito does in this video. I would count this in the plus column of Anamorfaking. You have extra pixels waiting for you if you need them. Say you're filming an actor standing up from a chair and you're not quite fast enough and their head gets clipped. You can just re frame the shot in post using the pixels that would get cropped. It's very handy for stuff like this 😀
I love this way of looking at reframing as a win instead of a loss. It is indeed, a safety net built into framing. Thank you for pointing it out! In these videos, I filmed 16:9 and cropped to 2:1. I definitely made use of those smart reframes in the process. ;)
Not gonna lie. I bought into a 1.33x adapter and I love it but I want to take it to the next level with a 1.9x/2x projection lens. I guess nothing beats that oval bokeh and artifacting lol
Hey you know about the vantage minihawks? They operate on the idea of anamorfakes but keep the elliptical bokeh throughout the aperture range. Also, now that I think about it, anamorfakes would be perfect for shooting IMAX with the Arri Alexa mini lf for full 1.43:1 or red monstro for 1.9:1, but with a 2.39:1 standard theatrical release.
I’m a big fan of this channel, since you know what you’re talking about, and put a lot of effort into your videos, as opposed to many other filmmakers and RUclipsrs who post videos about gear. I’m very interested in getting into anamorphics, but I confess I am confused by some things in the area. In your GH6 review, you say that it is the best option for budget anamorphic shooting. But if I want to get a 1.8 squeeze lens for the gh6, my only option (buying a new lens from B&H) seems to be the $3,250 vazen lenses. While that’s not outrageous, paired with the gh6, that comes out to 5,500 (roughly, excluding tax) Contrarily, if I buy a used S1H, let’s say for $3,000, and the great joy lens+adapter ($1500), that comes out to $4,500, which is substantially less than the gh6 combo. The downside is that you’re stuck with 60mm, but I see no reason to assume that there won’t be other options coming out since it seems the market is moving towards full frame, and away from mft. Just curious what your thoughts are on this, thanks
Is it possible, with a bit more money, to animorfake without being limited to a fixed aperture? I love anamorphic lense flares and like the bokeh too, but am not so interested in the wider aspect ratio.
Yes, but then there was the Great Joy adapter :) Question: If using a speed booster where should the element go? Behind the lens or behind the speed booster?
I'm going to be doing it before the speed booster (so between the lens and speedbooster) as I have the 0.64x and its already designed to be close to the shutter.
Regardless of speedbooster, I'd always prefer to put it at the aperture of the lens. If you don't wanna mod any lenses, there's several options coming up on the next episode.
Just something I am wondering about post.. I have wide screen and when you add black lines, width is not changed and I see black frame all around. Isn't possible to save a video in anamorphic cut size to be fullscreen on wide screens and add black lines left to right if you combine it with 16:9 video?
He he he I already invest in an Anamorphic adaptor it would be such a waste if I fake it, although for those that want to keep it low budget, definitely is a good option.
"No extra field of viex" is NOT a downsize, i don't understand your point ! Putting masks in post takes 2sec when you create presets ! And you have room to move the image, and sometimes to make 9/16 version of an advert when it is asked by a client (this is actually something more and more asked by clients, and a reason why i would refuse to shoot anamorphic). I would see only the aperture and bokeh problem, and maybe another one : it is not the real shit ! and sometimes, you can feel it. i'm almost going to regret going into the kowa16h road ! :p
It's a shame that the director needs to crop out part of the image, it means that he/she is not using the entire capacity of the sensor in every frame. that's the beauty of an Anamorphic lens, and that part is impossible to fake it. But if your clients knows what you are doing and they are ok with it, yeah you can give them frames with less pixels. 🤣
For me I don't like this. The thing that makes anamorphic actually special is how you get double the field of view but still maintain the depth you would get from a longer focal length. It's just such a unique look associated with classic cinema, the flares and the bokeh are more gimmicky in my eyes.
It might come as a surprise to you, but anamorfaking also delivers two different depths of field (vertical and horizontal) because of the oval insert. The field of view thing I get, and it's a personal choice. :)
While I understand the purpose of this channel, and appreciate the effort that goes into creating these videos, I fear that "making it easy" for anyone to get "the look", will make special movies no longer be. Example: affordable bokeh.. and then everyone started to use it until it was no longer special in movies. Slow motion: affordable cameras shooting 120fps, and everyone started saturating social media with slow motion shots of.. nothing. Then we have gimbals, sliders, one-click LUTS, etc.. everything very affordable/free, for anyone to make their nothingness more "cinematic", and make upcoming special movies less special when using techniques that have been abused by your average joe.
I mean, if we can't teach people how to make better films and use better tools, then, what's the purpose? I believe that if everyone has the same access to tools, only the truly good stories will stand out. :)

i'm not even able to get these types of lenses (yet or maybe not on my use case) but I love the quality and the content! Subscribed!
This is very informative and worth the time watching. Thanks for all the information. Keep it coming!

The new hairstyle is 😍
Hi, great channel ... Can you please make a video on Pooli adaptor ??
Not gonna lie. I bought into a 1.33x adapter and I love it but I want to take it to the next level with a 1.9x/2x projection lens. I guess nothing beats that oval bokeh and artifacting lol
Sooo I buy sirui ff 1.6 and add oval cut out and get 2x anamorphic :D
wait what john wick was anamorfaked???

Great points! I've been working to get a set of MiniHawks for a review to bring forward exactly those aspects!

Thank you! You can get a lot of DIY setups for 2x squeeze under that Vazen price on the GH6, hence, the best budget option. :)
As a huge fan of Techniscope Anamorfaking just makes all kinds of sense...

You can check out the minihakws - ruclips.net/video/qGyae3KADLo/видео.html
Just like the olden days, sweating in the gym and watching Tito, rocking a sharp looking new haircut. Good times
Man, I miss you!

The fixed aperture doesn't apply with a cinemorph filter we place in front of the lens right? Thank you for your reply :)
Sort of does. If you stop down too much, you'll cut off the oval shape anyway.
great video by the way !!
you have plan to review laowa anamorphic lenses !?
Very much so. Just waiting for the samples! :)

wow.. JOHN WICK was using streak filter.. LOL
How many stops of light are lost with kind of mods like this?
Between 1 (1.33x oval) and 2 (2x oval), depending on the oval shape.

#fakeItUntilYouMakeIt 😊
i do even anamorfaking my 1k bolex 8 lol
It’s time for you to make anamorphic lens buy your self, and start producing to filmmaker’s in affordable budget 😅

It’s all about storytelling, trust me. In a film festival, people rarely talk about gears.
