I work as an editor for a national commercial broadcaster in Australia and one of our camera ops owns a set of Iron Glass anamofakes. He pulls them out whenever the project suits, e.g. celebrity interviews and lifestyle stories.

Love anamorfaking. I have a Sirui 50 1.6x but I still use anamorfaking more than I use that lens. And will continue to use it.
Like you said, no one can tell the difference between anamorphic and anamorfake in a moving picture.

One of my favorite combinations is a Pocket 4K, speedbooster (adds a softness and something to the bokeh) vid Atlantic bokeh attachment, Schneider golden flare filter and sigma 20mm 1.4 (the wideness/distortion characteristics and 1.4 aperture create a unique look) best anamorfake combination I found

Do you have anything online using that combo? I'd love to see the results! :D

Always wanted to go with Vid-Atlantic but then I thought of the line in the bokeh part 🤔 like the one you mentioned with the other filters that have evenly spaced lines doesn't look nice

I shot with 2 sets of IronGlass lenses twice for this project I'm currently working on. The idea was to match the anamorphic footage that the other scenes had. However, the issues I had were more with the Helios lenses' softness wide open. The anamorphic lenses are opened up to show more of the environment. However, due to the one-size oval insert, you can't really stop down without losing the "look". Perhaps a system with an unmodified lens and filters of different-sized oval inserts that somehow are easily interchangeable. Of course, this isn't practical currently but this would solve my issues matching DOF between spherical and anamorphic lenses. Or just multiple copies of the same lens with different-sized oval inserts. This is also unpractical due to needing to swap lenses to change the aperture.

Yeah, the idea is make sure things match from the start, before realizing it on set! I've matched anamorfakes and anamorphics many times before and each of them was a weird process with its own special treatment.

@@AnamorphicOnABudget Unfortunately these were rental sets. The first set was EF and the 2nd was PL. That created a whole problem in itself. But even if we matched the anamorfakes @f4 to the anamorphics, that leaves no room for aperture adjustment.
If we could only make a system to quickly swap the oval inserts, these would be fantastic. Well... Mostly. You still have to deal with the quirkiness of vintage lenses.

Hey Tito. Quick question for you. What would be the main difference between oval inserts inside the lens and a filter in front of the lens?

NB: Those bendy streak flares look way bendier on a curved computer display (i.e. 32:9)

  • @Veptis

Is there ways to reduce or remove flares of cheap anamorphics like the Sirui instead? Surely you need to change coatings or paint the insides. Nothing a filter could do, right?

Take it slow, make notes, take photos of the process and measure the aperture mechanism! There's an upcoming episode about modifying any lens! :)

Can you combine stickers and flare filters?

    • @edwardenciu
      @edwardenciu 2 года назад +2

Yes, definitely. I do this often. Stickers on the back with a flare filter on the front.

Also, you can sandwich in a piece of nylon thread, monofilament, or fishing line between 2 rear stickers. The flare/streak effect seems to work better from the rear.

Will the cinemorph stickers work with Rokinon Cine lenses?

They'll work to some extent. Not as well as modifying the lenses as shown in the other video of this series.
