    1:18 This is a big disadvantage. Many bus users are visually impaired (possibly because they can't see well enough to drive) so the display needs to be bright enough so that we can see which number of bus is coming in good time.

    • @davem9204
      @davem9204 9 часов назад +3

      Also important at this time of year when buses get dirty and the displays are less clear. You need the brightness to cut through the grime.

      eu laws stipulate new buses must have maximum light limits, thats why displays and even headlights are duller. yes i know we have left the eu, but it will take years to remove them from statu books.

      I have just been to Agadir Marocko and the line number was almost impossible to see on the buses. Everything else was also pretty tatty if you ask me but dead cheap. 35 pence. The trams in Casablanca on the other hand was just excellent in every way just like trams in Marrakesh.

      @@jonathanpringle8238you think producers will make special stuff for UK only. Good luck. Do you today get every car model right hand drive?
      Before you were part of rule making now you are only follow the rules by others. The stuff you will get if specially made for UK will be less quality, why stick to good EU quality if you can save money on lower unsafe UK quality. 😂

    This popped up randomly in my feed, no idea why, but found it interesting and enjoyable!
    I very rarely use buses as I don't live in that London, living in.s small town with a poor bus service. The last time I was on a bus I noticed it had vertical protection bars on sides on the front top window to protect it from branches. I wonder if the crack in the window was caused by a branch and having some protection bars would benefit (it might spoil the appearance, but it's a bus not a Ferrari)?
    Also amused by the comment about getting on a 40mph road like it's some space age light speed! Out in the sticks going at 40mph would be considered being in a traffic jam! :)
    I know EVs seem to attract very polarised views, and I try and keep an open mind and can see pros and cons. For buses they do seem to make sense as they have fixed journeys with a depot they can charge up at,, and stop a lot when being driven. Anyone who's been near the tail-pipe of diesel bus can smell the nasties come out of it, so the reduction in pollution is surely a good thing. My only thought is are they loud enough to be heard coming? So many Londoners on bikes or on foot seem to be oblivious to vehicles around them (immersed on their phone or earbuds), so they need something noisy to get them out of their bubble.

    • @nathanw9770
      @nathanw9770 7 часов назад

      Most roads in London have a 20mph speed limit and the traffic is so bad here you'd be lucky to even reach that in certain parts. So yeah 40mph is like a space age light speed to us lol. Then again Biggin Hill is only barely in London, go any further than that and you're in Kent.

      @davem9204 2 часа назад

      @@grahamjohnson4702 yes, now I look again I can see the a bar. It doesn't seem to be very proud of the body, particularly with the curvature of the screen though; so can see branches still hitting the windscreen.

    Popped up in my feed. An excellent and enthusiastic report - thanks for the time which you invested, which I (for one) appreciate. Dim displays do not help visually-weakened passengers (surely, just turn up the dim-ness??) but no tree-bars on the top front left seems short-sighed. The weight shown at 4:03 - FOURTEEN TONNES?? Heaven help the roads of London. An original Routemaster was less than eight tons.

      who cares what they are like on the outside its the inside that counts and they have failed, they have designed a bus for the designers, fully able bodied adult men about 5'10 and it shows, these things are not designed with children/short people, pushchairs, disabled, elderly, women, those carrying heavy or bulky bags, or frankly the obese in mind. this is a bus for healthy slim men not carrying anything.

    Nice video
    I live on this route, and these are a massive improvement over their predecessors, the older ones of which would often struggle to get up the rather steep hills along the route. This bus takes them with ease.
    One significant thing you've missed is that these busses have working heating, which again is a massive improvement. This past weekend I bussed it back to Biggin Hill from Heathrow - the SL7 was cold, the SL5 was absolutely freezing, so it was a joy getting on the 320 which was at a nice reasonable temperature.

    The seat nearest the river may be intentionally uncomfortable as that is the seat that is often used by drivers accompanying new drivers to the route or company; I've had some terrifying experiences in that seat!
    The bell annoys me because traditionally 2 dings is the bell code for go; for those of us with Routemaster and half-cab driving experience.
    Optare Solo's have the best bells, and when doing daily checks I used to like playing tunes with them: thank goodness the passengers never figured that one out!

    Nice review! Another benefit of the LED lighting I found is that it's very easy on the eyes. My aunt has vertigo which is a type of dizziness and the bright lighting you see everywhere noeadays can cause her to have symptoms. So having this feature on more bus types would definitely benefit her. I've also heard it helps to stop drug use on the buses, particularly ones that require needles, since coloured lighting restricts you view of your veins. I really didn't like these buses at all when they were announced but having been on them on the 320 teice now I can say the pros heavily outweigh the cons.

    For me, the ventillation on a bus is important as was emphasised during the covid years, that bus you were featuring did seem to have opening windows, perfect and perhaps the heating and ventilation on board is better designed than the majority of Southampton buses at the moment where the upper deck vents are below the front window, meaning all the air blows first over the people on the front seat and then onwards back meaning that that coughing and sneezing person who always sits at the front passes their germs on to the passengers behind.

  • @jcarr162000
    @jcarr162000 7 часов назад

    My suggestions to BYD to improve the looks, more conventional front and rear lights, extend the black area on the upper rear window down to surround the rear destination screen, and hide the rear vents. Maybe paint the red band between upper and lower front windows black, add a discrete tree deflector, and remove the tint from the front display

  • @konradc12

    The crack in the window is going to very expensive replacement! The design does not factor in the possibility of tree branches growing out, or trees leaning after storms. The bus route is hilly so I assume there is some form of regen to help between charges! Your review is very informative. Great video Nathan. The display and brightness and formatting of what the signs/displays say are down to the end user specifications and settings and also the commissioning programme.
    Thank you for the video and review it was a great share.
    In China, BYD fleets are into 35,000 per city - In one week they delivered over 100,000 EV buses a few years ago.
    Each week different EV bus manufacturers were trying to outdo each other with bigger and bigger roles out of EV buses.
    They started with 35,000 and ended with 112,000 EV buses being roles out over the weekend mainly to the full week

    1:22 the front display is not bright because the glass is tinted. Should use a separate glass for the display, rather than one piece which includes the top windscreen.

    I might have travelled on a BYD Bus without realising it. Do you know which route numbers are served by BYD? Thanks for the video.

    I liked your video. Just like a few other mentioned you're video just popped as a suggestion but in my case it is the type of thing I'm watching and it's probably because of the high number of comments.
    The bus seems nice but I'm not a fan of double decker bus as a city bus as it's restrictive for high movement of people going up/down all the time.
    I'm from Barcelona.
    Here buses have 3 doors and "bendy" buses have 4 (and a few of them 5).
    Another thing that is in most buses (and once the older one are replaces, in all) is an "open door" button (also works from the outside if it's a door you can use to get up, and it is possible on most buses to use the middle back door to get on the bus).
    Stop signs are above each door, if you press the stop button it will illuminate the stop sign above the closest door and it will automatically open). If not you can use the "open door button" to open it.
    When doors close there is a spoken notice before the door closing signs.
    Recently all the City buses got a unified info screen system (they installed them on all buses replacing the built in system) with bright clear large screens with info on the rout, estimated time to few next stops, connections and estimated arrival time of other buses at the upcoming station.
    The also started installing external loudspeakers on the bus for the hearing impaired announcing the bus number and direction.
    The seats are not as comfortable as the ones you have.
    I also watch an American bus driver channel and it's interesting to see the difference between different cities/countries.

    I liked your review its my first look at this electric bus . As you said the interior was vey good . The only thing I disagreed with was the outside look of it . Iwas quite happy with the way it looked . I live in Canterbury and all our buses are diesel. The amount of polution they put out must be very high . I would be very pleased to see some of these buses here

    Great video Nathan. A very interesting review on the BD11. I’m certainly not a fan of the exterior either and I find the interior a bit bland. I also prefer the bright lights than strip lights. The seats do look nice though.

    Remember when using public charging ports use a charge only lead or adapter that has no data wire in it as if those USBs are connected on the bus other people could mess with your phone. Like the government logging the fact you was on the bus at a given time and place.

    Looks like the "branch bar" is tucked too far back to do its job to me - it seems very tight in against the bus, and that cracked window screams tree damage.

    This bus is much more like coach. It has all the trimmings of coaches you would ride on e.g. National Express etc.
    Which makes sense to me, as it is more cost effective to re-use parts across them 🤷🏾‍♂

    People outside London: There's one bus an hour and it takes you 45 minutes for a four-mile journey.
    People in London: Waaah, the bus is uglyyyyyyy. My life is overrrrrrr.

      you've clearly never been here, in london its supposed to be like a bus every 10 to 15 mins and you stand there waiting for over half an hour, then when one finally comes its crammed up to the door so you have to wait for the next one, and when you finally get on one traffic is terrible and your stuck in a traffic jam thinking you should have just walked instead, but your not going to get off and give up and walk now because you've already paid for that journey so damn it your gonna take it.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 10 часов назад

      @ And you've clearly never been anywhere else. If you had, you wouldn't be whining about how ugly your multiple kinds of brand new buses are, because you'd realise that everyone else gets whatever seventeen-year-old thing happens to be running today.

      the implication that having a preference for a bus design is somehow outlandish is what i find funniest about comments like these

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 10 часов назад

      @@FarmYard-Trains Nothing wrong with liking design. It's just the total lack of awareness of the privileged position one is in that's "funny" about videos like these. You know how Marie Antoinette gets mocked for not understanding why the starving peasants don't just eat cake? It's basically that, only without actual starving or actual peasants.

    A very interesting video - thanks! I mainly use buses in Brighton and London. It is my impression that buses today are very 'jolty' - surprising as i assume that they are electric or automatic transmission ? The older 'platform' buses - i dont know the technical name - where many people would jump on and off seemed to be a smoother ride - but maybe that is my impression as i am in my eighties!!!

    The two rows of three headlights makes it look pretty weird. It's like looking at the face of a spider or something.
    I do think the massive upstairs window is a mistake. It's so big that they are going to have busses driving into tree branches and chipping the high and low bits of the window that would have been solid bus on another model. So I think the percentage of upper window replacements is going to be higher than other makes of London bus. In the long term, that might increase the maintenance costs for the fleet.
    The innards look great. The buggy button is definitely a step up. It means the driver will pay extra attention to the side mirror to make sure the buggy is well clear of the door, before closing the door. (Compare that with the door not being pushed and the driver seeing a man or woman facing the bus and not noticing the buggy. It's much better health and safety.)

    A proper bus looks and feels like an original AEC Routemaster, or a Guy Arab IV with a tin front, or a Midland Red D9. Everything else is just a modern rectangular tin box on wheels. Putting the motor at the back, without a front radiator, is a recipe for overheating and failure.

    Great review, big fan of any electric bus but this one looks like it's going to be popular with passengers, drivers and the bus companies. One thing I'd like to know is how good the AC is - guess we'll have to wait till it gets warmer but would like to hear any info on this.

    Talking about the bell , the conductor on the old buses would signal to the driver ( can't remember if the 2 rings were to stop or start )
