As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I have thought about this scene in my own head and re imagined it many times over with my abuser sitting at the table. It is so hard to not want to go down that road.
Another piece of class acting at 3:15, when Nokes says "A long time ago". The expression, like he's trying to dismiss it, but knows he can't. And at 4:09, his expression again, as he tries to excuse what he did, by saying he 'tried to make them tough'. Kevin Bacon is incredible.
Yeah Bacon’s acting is superb. He’s thinking of every possible scenario of getting out of this alive. First he dismisses the incident as nothing and then acknowledges it under the guise of aiding them for life only to realize that none of that is working until trying to actually guilt them out of it by stating they will burn in hell.
This film is fantastic. My grandparents grew up in Hells Kitchen with the Westies. Tough neighborhood back then. My great uncle was thrown into an orphanage after his parents both died young. He was abused by the priests and had to fight every night so him and his brother could eat. When my grandma turned 14 she married my grandpa so they could legally take custody of her brothers. My great uncle Bobby went on to work for the Daily News. He knocked out a union representative at a meeting one time. Dude was tough as nails. I watched him die of lung cancer and he never complained one time. Watching this movie makes me understand more what he went through when he was in the system as a kid.
