My parents and sister didn't know what to do with my hair growing up, so often it looked messy and terrible...as an adult I am trying so hard to support my son with his hair but he has autism and other diagnosis that you wouldn't know by just looking at him, and those have been such an obstacle when it comes to his hair. Passing judgment doesn't help anyone.

When I was 7 months pregnant with my youngest my husband died of a brain tumor and we lost all our possessions afterwards. There was a month between the diagnosis and his death. After giving birth I was severely depressed with suicidal thoughts for 9 years. In those first 3 years I never combed my hair and I barely got to enjoy my baby. That started in 2011. Now I work as a social worker myself as an experience expert and support single mothers in their journey to recovery. I'm so happy to see that there are people like you who don't prejudice but just help. Because during my depression I was so much prejudiced by people I never expected. Years ago I worked at a physical rehab hospital. A little 8 year old girl that had been in a bad car accident had long hair and after a month in the hospital it was one big rat's nest on the back of her head. Her aunt spent about 6 hours and a couple of bottles of detangling spray to get it out and her niece immediately started to engage in therapy better and just overall improved. All of the staff gave the aunt compliments and some of us chipped in for her to have a spa day.

This video broke my heart and then mended it. I'm a white-ass man with fine, thinning hair - but I know what it's like to stop taking care of yourself due to depression and trauma. It becomes very difficult to treat yourself well when it feels like the world doesn't - day in and out, you're receiving negative reinforcement that you don't deserve nice things.
The really inspiring thing about this story is that she actually approached you for help. It is so, so courageous to ask for help sometimes - everybody needs it, but speaking up is damn hard. Really glad you were able to make this happen for her and I hope she's doing well today.

When you’re sick, depressed, bed ridden etc. even simple things like brushing your hair, brushing your teeth, doing skincare, and whatever else is SO HARD. I know first hand and having tight curls/thick hair makes it even harder. Poor woman, her hair is gorgeous tho❤️
Edit: everyone who is thinking/saying that you’re depressed and can do all of these things, AMAZING, great for u honestly! But not everyone is the same and some people’s depression is debilitating and we use self neglect as a /poor/ coping mechanism. Don’t come in this comment section invalidating other’s experiences✨✨

I feel that, brought tears to my eyes, just a week and a half ago, I started detangling my hair after a year and a half of not combing it at all. Life gets hard sometimes and it just gets too hard to deal with. I bought a pair of scissors to cut off my hair which I have been wearing natural for six years now. But I talked to my daughter about if she thought my hair could be brought back to life and if it could be detangled, she told me yes and it gave me hope.
So I bought some detangle conditioner and I already had a jar of leave in conditioner and some curl activator and coconut oil along with my wide tooth comb, my medium comb and my fine tooth comb and I started the process.
It took three days to detangle and comb out my hair….it had grown so long I didn’t even know.
I keep my gray hair gray because I think it is beautiful and God gave it to me and it’s mine….I didn’t get to skip any one of those days I have lived through and I think my gray is the jewels in my crown.
My hair is long now, longer than it has ever been in my life and it’s still natural and I just thank the Lord and I thank my daughter for encouraging me to not cut it.

You are such a positive and kind person that it made me want to tear up and cry. I've been through such a hard road with my hair. From family members "taking care" of it with tight braids and perms and pressing it, to the first big chop and learning your hair has curls. I'm at a point now where I have no idea what I want to do with it. Its so high maintence and I'm debating locs, buzz cutting it all off again, or wearing wigs. I'm just trying to keep it healthy but also have time where I can divorce how as a black woman, my identity and femininity is tied to my hair. I just want to reach a point where I can be happy with my hair and not see it as a chore or worry that it will determine how people interact with me. This honestly breaks my heart... during the pandemic I stopped taking care of my hair and it was eventually all knotted. I hated my hair & myself but I due miss how long my curly hair was (If only I loved myself more...) My mom was not as patient as you, so she resorted to cutting my hair off in chunks. It was painful but fast, and I cried throughout it all. I never had very short hair before and I felt even worse afterwards. I felt ugly and even more unattractive. My mom then took me to the salon to "fix" her work. She made me get a chemical hair relaxer so I can have looser curls/manage hair better. I regret not standing up for myself, but I felt like there was no other option. Today, my hair breaks so easily and I hate how there's clearly 2 different texture patterns. I've been growing it out ever since my hair was relaxed/cut, and I would do ANYTHING to have my natural hair back... I would go back 2 years and hug my past self because she really needed it. I stumbled upon your channel and I want to let you know that you're a blessing! Your patience and understanding is truly admirable

I left my abusive ex-husband and one of his forms of abuse was complete control of my appearance. When I left him, I did nothing about my appearance, including showering, brushing my hair, anything, for several months. Eventually my friend convinced me to find a stylist to help and as she was helping me for 3 hours, I cried like a baby. Depression is vicious. I went almost 3 months without a shower or washing my hair. I just couldn't do anything. My hair was extremely matted. It took about 90 minutes to detangle my hair which is very, very long and thin. There was some breakage and there was a lot of hair loss but it came out great. The shampooing was wonderful. I felt so much better, and having used a Moroccan scrub glove after my extremely long, soapy shower, my skin was soft and smooth. It wasn't the end of my depression but I did take regular showers and regularly washed my hair after that. No one has any idea how inert you get with depression. You're active in your head but you cannot do anything. With great therapy and kindness, I was able to come out of it. Gentleness and kindness are essential.

As women we should remind each other how important we are and not tear down each other. I know I get embarrassed about my hygiene when my depression gets bad. Her hair at the end was beautiful. Thank you again for your patience and reminding your customer that she deserves to feel important and beautiful.

Another white lady checking in. I do watch hair videos though and have sometimes watched Black hair you tubers specifically. I never realized that there was so much to having Black hair and am fascinated. I'm also interested in learning about the very deep cultural role Black hair has in the community. So, I'm just hear to be inspired, fascinated and to learn. 🥰

I have an autoimmune disease and have been bedridden for weeks at a time. Unable to comb or wash my hair- or wash but not comb and after laying in bed the tangles build into a nest. I have a stylist who has taken 1hour to detangle me more than once. She never asked any questions. Dosen't even charge me extra. I leave feeling so renewed. With illness i have lost a lot in my life, but every few months I feel normal & alive again thanks to her. There really are still good people in this world.

Same here.... as soon as I saw the video I could totally relate. I don’t have African American hair, but my hair is naturally curly and gets really matted at the nape of my neck. I’ve had time when I just couldn’t detailed it on my own after weeks of being in a flare that kept me from showering or grooming at all. It’s embarrassing being a woman in my 40’s dealing with that, so it’s heart warming to see compassionate women helping out.

After she detangles it for you, can you get her to put it in a braid? If it's long enough to make a braid that will keep it from tangling. I had to do that when I had a serious back injury and couldn't get out of bed.

@@mygirldarby so true! After I got surgery my mom helped me get my hair in braids and it made such a huge difference. Lots of oil and a little bit of wax and my hair looked amazing once I was able to wash it.
