  • In this video I'm showing you how I go about welding a differential making sure not to cause any damage to the crown wheel, pinion and bearings . I'm using mild steel mig which is not the best option for welding dissimilar metals but its gonna get the job done!
Weld spatter in the gears and bearings will cause your diff to start whining and grinding shortly after welding it solid. Here's a few tricks to stop that happening to you.
My names Matt Urch and I own and run Urchfab welding and fabrication.
I specialise in custom automotive fabrication from building roll cages to complete one off builds.
I built the worlds most unique and oldest drift car known as the drift rod which can be found on my channel.
So if your into grinding, welding, fabricating, drifting, going fast etc, your in the right place!

*NON*-chlorinated brake cleaner is the stuff needed for upcoming welding jobs
    otherwise you get *chlorine gas*

TIP - from one who has built many of these for competition : As you mentioned 10:36 make a block of steel to drop in between the spider / side gear. Make sure it is a snug fit prior to welding. WHY? When you weld the gears up they will distort / pull in which can over a fairly short period of time cause axle spline issues. I have used this method for some high hp applications without failure.

Best diff welding vid I've seen mate! Well done. Most wont tell you that you cam weld the gears to the cast housing.

Was waiting for you to mention the plate method! It comes in handy when you can’t get access to the tight corners or the gear - case.
Also, cutting out a half circle of steel to clamp over the crown wheel is easy to make and great splatter insurance 👍

Rob here... If you put some tip dip on a small brush and brush it on areas that have a potential to collect spatter you can greatly reduce or eliminate the spatter from collecting in those areas.

best way ive found is to cut a 3/16" plate to fit in the center of spider gears and weld it to all four gears. for good measure you can weld it to the case as well but not necessary. Been running the same welded diff in my drift car for some 12 years now no issues

Can this be done with a 130 amp welder? Or do I need to pay someone with a more powerful welder to do it? If my 130 will do it, should I use mig, or flux core? Thanks! Very good vid.

Thanks for the great advice mate. My question (not trolling) is: if the brake cleaner residue can give toxic fumes when welding, how does it help to burn it off beforehand with a torch? Isn't that the same result?

The best thing you could do is grab some junk cast iron some 1/8 and some 1/4 inch steel and find a setting where you're able to weld any of the 3 to each other (with as little spatter as possible) by controlling your hand movements. It is possible if your a good welder you just will need to be aware of where your putting heat

Any Chlorinated brake parts cleaner is a big no no. Chlorinated parts cleaner when exposed to U.V radiation from welding can degrade into Phosgene gas. Phosgene is a neurotoxin the damage is cumulative and irreversible. It is also a bad idea to weld to the center pin because some diffs have to have the center pin removed to slide the axles in to remove the c-clips so that the axles can be removed. This is a job where preheat is necessary, you have hardened gears welded to cast steel and hardened gears. This is a job for 7018 stick or E71-T1 wire either way low-hydrogen welds are the best choice for this type of work. It is also a good idea to weld these on a heavy steel bench then warm the parts back up then cover with a metal bucket to slow the cooling rate. I build these lincoln locker diffs for pulling trucks with engines in excess of 1000Hp. I am advising people this video is pure bullshit! When a chip if that hard steel comes off and runs through a bearing it will be all over but the crying. This is not a mig job and to act like it is is irresponsible to the point of criminal. Epic fail on this video.

Mick Holgate I don't need one. I just gave some simple instructions and highlighted how what was done here was wrong. Do you need me to set the welder for you and hold the stinger while you weld it? I don't really care if someone does a crap job, my first and most important point was about safety. I don't want to see anyone get sick or dead over trying to save a few bucks.

    • @melaniew77msn
      @melaniew77msn 6 лет назад +1

Mick Holgate My videos are of what is most important to me being my children. I don't need to get on youtube with welding videos to try and impress non-welders with my skill. I validate myself with the results I yield everyday. If I want to polish something it will be my diplomas from HIWT or my nuclear certifications or my steam certifications or at lowest my structural certifications. Do yourself a solid and fuck off everyone who takes me on here loses save yourself the shame.
