Only things that come close: Dexter, The Wire, Millennium. And in the UK: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy & Smiley's People.
First season of Westworld is right up there with this in my book

The right chick is super smart.
The reason why the co-workers hated Cohle so much is because they suspected he was Internal Affairs, they said it in the beginning but it was in the background. The drunk detective with the mustache called him a rat which is why he slapped him. I think this detail went right by ya'll lol.

Also, his character isn't toeing the line of "this is how a southern christian acts," so he's alienating himself right out of the gate.
People don't realize that in the south, in the 90's, it wasn't uncommon for the first question to be asked when meeting a new person was: "What church do you go to?"
@@deanreevesii Still kind of is. I was looking at houses in South Carolina in 2015 and as we were driving with the realtor he kept pointing out Churches that were good to attend.
Tbh I rewatch this shit every 6 months or so and I totally failed to connect the "rat" comment with IA, lmao

Rust is just phenomenal. He's such a flawed character, but he doesn't shy away from those defiencies. ------- It allows him to get in the mind of the perpretrator. ------ Every time I see clips from the first season of TD it makes me respect Matthew McConaughey's acting. ------ He really gets into the psyche of his characters. Which would send us mere mortals ape shit.
I think one of the best funny sleeper moments in this series is Marty telling Rust “stop saying weird shit” and then that look he gives rust after he says “I don’t sleep, I just dream.”
Makes me laugh every single time I see it.

@Frustratingly Pragmatic hi. Yes all good points. I would also say that “playing up” the satanic angle to the point it was theater, also detracted from the real issue of good vs evil. I lived in the South during this time as well. All good conversation.
Guys generally don’t ask things like “what’s happened in your life to make you feel this way?” It’s too personal, and wouldn’t occur to most men to ask anyway
That's changing. the younger generation isn't so insecure about their masculinity and we're more aware of mental health issues that comes with bottling it up. we don't want to be our bitter fathers.
Has nothing to do with insecurity, or mental health. Just generally speaking that’s not how we conduct ourselves. Especially with people we don’t know, or not sure we even like as in the show. It isn’t negative. Just that a mutual respect usually has to be established first, followed by trust. Its considered a sign of respect not to ask too many prying questions before said bond is established. Men generally assume that if someone wants to tell us something personal they will. This show actually does a really accurate job depicting how guys interact

Season 3 is fantastic too, but season 1 is lightning in a bottle. It's perfect. Not one missed beat.
This is probably one of the best reactions to True Detective I've seen. So many people just consistently throw theories at the wall, even when they don't have the info to make good ones. But you folks are instead paying attention to the characters, and you are doing a really good job at reading and understanding them. I think that is both more interesting to watch and a better way to understand what is happening.
One of my favorite shows ever. Too bad the subsequent seasons didn't rise to this level but honestly pretty hard to compete with Season I.
I don't get the intense hate for Marty in the first episode. He's literally defending his partner even though they're not partners or friends anymore.
It’s crazy how on the money they are with so many aspects of the show after just watching the first episode! Can’t wait to see the rest of this series of reactions. True Detective is my favorite piece of visual entertainment EVER!
I dunno how but I knew from the get go Cohle's whole thing is gonna resonate with Arianna real hard XD You're just too awesome, woman! If you like him now you're gonna LOVE him by the time this is over.

This is definitely my personal favorite season of a TV show. Can't wait to see your next reaction to this unbelievably great show.
So I am from the area where they find the first body (right outside of Erath), and they really capture how the area felt back in the 1990s. The first season is highly accurate with it's story interweaving with some of surrounding Louisiana lore.
The first season is a straight up southern gothic horror story; ya'll are in for a treat.

The title is a reference to old pulp comics and magazines with titles like True Detective or Private Eye Stories. Basically paperback precursors to the modern True Crime show. The concept of the show was each season would focus on a different detective story. Much like the old pulp serials, the first story of this series was full of gruesome, eye catching visuals and twisted motives meant to draw the reader/viewer in.
Season 1 of True Detective might be the best television ever filmed.

It’s called a Robo high. Townes Van Zandt a country folk singer back during the 70’s and 80’s used to guzzle an entire bottle of Robotissin. He said it was the worst high ever. He’s dead of course, lol.

Montucky Cold Snacks was started in 2012. It's a relatively new beer. Also they wanted to use a Texas beer, so they chose Lone Star. He prob has been drinking them for a while

THis show has more twist and turns than a Rocky Mountain roadway and will make Grey's Anatomy look like a kindergarten coloring book.------- I still get the shakes when I watch Marty and Rust unrvel the deepest most intense mystery anyone could fictionalize. ------ 7 weeks for you gals to get to the end. -------- Not sure if I can take it. Erath will never be the same again. ------ Please keep your comfort blanket handy, you'll need it for sure.

I absolutely love how venomous these ladies are toward Marty by like.... not even half-way through the effin episode! It's hilarious cuz i felt the same way the first time i watched this series. Being both pretty damn pessimistic myself as well as a recovering addict, i immediately identified with Rust, where as Marty was such a transparent prick that lead me to feeling the same way as these two did, almost like - protective of Rust in a way. Wasn't until like half way through the season that, (despite the shitty things he did), I eventually fell in love with Marty too.
True Detective is one of my favorite series ever. Great show with great storytelling.

Fringe had a great 2-year run and was an excellent underrated 5-year sci-fi series many people either forget or don't know about since it was on early FOX. I also believe Justified was another underrated series due to being broadcast on FX. Season One was excellent. Can't wait to see the return of Raylan Givens this year!

wowee, about time! .. you know, I don't think I've ever seen a show where the characters have so much growth, but in a lot of other ways, never change at all .. for example, when Woody's character says he doesn't "hold grudges anymore that shit leads to cancer", well, to doubt the validity of that statement was both on the money and off the mark.. Woody was totally the type to hold grudges, but when he says it in that moment, 'current day', I actually believe him, and I think you will too on your second viewing.. y'all in for a treat .. one of the greatest stories told in the 'TV format' I've ever seen..

It's a perfect show guys. All three seasons are good, but this first season is something special.
Season 1 was all time good. I didnt think season 2 was as bad as everyone else and season 3 was solid but you just cant top the performances and writing of season 1. Will be watching the new season when it drops later this year.
Agreed. I don't think S2 was as bad as others say. It's just S1 set the bar so high there was no way S2 could meet those expectations. If S2 had been first, it probably would've been much better received.

Season 1 was amazing. 2nd season was a huge letdown. 3rd season was probably somewhere in the middle for me.

I'm so here for this - I love this season of True Detective. Avoiding spoilers here, but the ending (not dealing w/ the killer(s) but outside the hospital) is amazing! It takes all this background work to get us to the point to really know and understand the special relationship between these two detectives. Love. This. Show.

First season is near perfection, with some of the most amazing acting & writing I've ever experienced.
However, season three does a decent job of trying to find that magic again. It doesn't quite make it, but it's a lovely thing to watch them steer the ship back into that direction.
@@FesterSilently Agreed. I enjoyed Season three. It was unique, very well acted, and well-told. A good story, not as magical. Season two is an interesting and enjoyable character driven detective story. It would seem less flat if it weren't in the afterglow of S1. It's good, if unexceptional. Doesn't deserve the not-surprising dismissal. But, you know, that's how it is.
I really enjoyed season 3, as well. Mahershala Ali is incredible.

It's S1 or S3 for The Wire. It just wasn't the same without Avon and Stringer in the mix.

Best season of tv, EVER. In my opinion. With an antagonist that was truly horrifying. Made all the more better by the boring train wreck of the 2nd season. Only problem I have with Anthology series as a whole….you fuck up when you put your best season first, like this series. A pure piece of tv gold✨
