Cohle vs Hart?

Hart seems like your typical southern misogynist and while he does have his vices and flaws i think by the end of the series you'll begin to appreciate him.
I wonder why you accept some of Cohle's more antisocial actions are just his way of 'fighting his demons' but you seem unwilling to acknowledge that's why Hart does the things he does too?
@@eddhardy1054 Cohle isnt hurting anyone. he's just a bummer to be around. hart is cheating on his wife while he has kids and then gaslighting her to convince her he's not. also cohle is willing to look the darkness in the eye and contemplate how to stop it where hart just wants to claim everything is simple and face value. every new discovery they make in the case is cause of cohle. worst case you can say that both guys over step their authority to do physical harm but neither is better than the other in that case.
Hart gets a lot of flack. Hart's inlaws are intolerable, and his wife is frosty and demeaning. Plus I think the infidelity stems from trying to process his trauma.
@@Diegesis Because of his issues Cohle acts like he does to the prostitute (blackmailing in a threatening manner to get drugs) and the guys in the garage (all-out assault to obtain info) and he admits he treated his wife badly. He and Hart are both damaged and treat others in a sh*tty way but only Hart gets called out...
Both men have been broken by the job they do. One accepts it and the other denies it.
One sets the bar high but fails to reach it. The other sets the bar low and casually steps over it.
That's a great way to explain it
True... Very True
wow! I don't know what to say.
Marty is such a realistic character portrayal by Woody Harelson. ------- Marty has very big flaws in his personal life which cause so much more chaos to the relationship between the two characters. ------ AS a detective he can't hold a candle to Rust's intuition, but he's is integral to case management and interviewing leads. ------ Of course, you have so much to see with their professional and personal interactions.
I feel like Marty's flaws are so recognizable it makes him an easy character to hate, especially early in the season. While Rust's flaws, namely his nihilism, are easier for people to sympathize with because they happen to give him an edge on the investigation, and I think people romanticize characters like that.
@@kiwitogrape I ageree with you, however we are getting to see behind the curtains of these two men. ------- In the real world if you met someone like Rust would not be able to stand being around him, becasue he's so raw. ------- Marty on the other hand is more personable and easy to like. -------- We don't see the turmoil and crama goin on behind the scenes, since Marty is so good at keeping his activites in the dark.
@K2da _G I guess my point was just that Rust's character arc is him overcoming his nihilism, and people excuse and romanticize that version of him that was damaging to him and the people around him. Meanwhile they (rightly but myopically) focus on Marty's infidelity and chauvinism because it's easy for them to grasp as a flaw.
Like the "it's a woman's body" scene where you'll see people side with a woman who is actively profiting from an underage prostitute because they don't like Marty and she gives some canned comeback about women's autonomy.
@@kiwitogrape okay I get that. Thanks for elaborating. Great insight.
As someone who worked in Law Enforcement, saying that Hart is looking for the easy way out, well it almost always is the easy answer or the usual conclusion. Its very rare for something to go as deep as this story, so yeah Hart has some of his own Demons, but man so has Cohle. They both are doing their jobs. Hart is not a bad cop. He may be a bad husband, but not a bad cop. You need to give this story time to play out.
Glad you said this, because I was going to. Makes me think of another line from another great movie, because its so true...most of the time. "To a cop the explanation is never that complicated. It's always simple. There's no mystery to the street, no arch criminal behind it all. If you got a dead body and you think his brother did it, you're gonna find out you're right."
@Unisol542 GREAT film, by the way.
Just shows how people are quick to judge others in real life
I don’t have any background in law enforcement but even I was getting irritated by their comments. They clearly know less than nothing about police work and are basing what they do know off of unrealistic tv/movies
Well put.
I get that Marty has a lot of flaws, but give him a break. He has to offer alternative explanations to Rust's theories. That's how you keep what works and discard what doesn't.
Yeah, but through the course of time he changes, it's just that his character at this point is a pos. Which is kinda what the showrunners want you to feel
@@NileCrocodile191 Clearly not. If that were the case he wouldn’t have given a shit about the girl at the ranch.
These type of “true crime fans” don’t know anything about actually solving crime. And they always act superior to everyone with a flaw who isn’t likeable, yet drool over every sadboi with a flaw because he’s likeable.
@@SnailHatan no, my point was just that he was a complex character. He has a conception of what a good moral code is, but he repeatedly fails himself. He knows what's right and wrong, but he cannot put in the effort. Giving $100 is barely enough effort, while daily life requires him to consistently be good. He even addresses this later when he says that the solution was "right in front of my eyes"
@@SnailHatan Even sadder that Arianna was about to go "you go girl!" at an underage prostitute. Good grief.
Love how you hated Marty so much that you were angry at him for being against under age prostitution
EXACTLY! I just basically made the same comment before I saw this.
It’s because they’re aware of his hypocrisy. A womanizer and cheater having a moral compass over prostitution is ironic af; that’s what the scene was literally trying to depict
@@SushiBandit28but sensible. I mean, I think a majority of people regardless of their issues can agree that any kind of child sexualization is disgusting. Hence the point of Marty’s character: he’s flawed, not horrible
@@SushiBandit28 he's not against prostitution. He's against "Minor" prostitution. wtf
I think you guys are really misreading Marty…he’s not a good man but neither is Rust.
Yeah, they are both kinda bad dudes. Rust just knows he is and doesn't have anyone in his life to hurt.
@@youtubehandle83 Well he doesn't have anyone to hurt anymore since he split from his wife.
@@eddhardy1054 Obviously
@@youtubehandle83 Except maybe when he's scoring drugs or extracting a confession
I like western women supporting other women's bedroom endeavors
Love girlpower womenpower content
The picture of people in colorful hoods was a picture of Cajun Mardi Gras riders. They go house to house asking if they have anything for the pot, then at the end of the day they have a giant gumbo for the whole community.
Not gonna lie, both of you haven't got a clue how men potrayed here behave and show love. Rust and Marty may argue over every little thing that defines them but it doesn't necessary they don't like each other. On the contrary, They are getting close.
They actively hate each other for most of the episodes, dude. Their relationship is inherently dysfunctional, and while what they go through together bonds them, it's rooted in trauma. That is not how men should love each other.
This right here is the problem, folks 😅
@@OblivionZer0 Hart definitely dislikes Cohle, but I'd say Cohle is pretty apathetic about Hart. But either way, yup, they definitely don't like each other lol
@@OblivionZer0"that's not how men should love eachother" I mean sure but op isn't wrong. That's the reality. You don't have to like it.
@@brownsey1 That men aren't women? Oh geez, what an issue.
I get Marty is a POS but at some point you need to stop lecturing him like he can hear you and not miss quite so much dialogue lol
I'm glad someone finally said it...they miss so much because of the non stop blabbering
@@tonyh6640They wouldn't shut up it was so annoying.
I get that you don’t like Marty and that’s fine, but in order to hate on him you literally supported child prostitution.😳
ikr!
I don't blame Marty. Those were the best pair ever shown on TV and a body to match.
😅😅😅
The best I’ve ever seen for sure. They’ll bring a tear to your eye.🥲
This first season of this show is phenomenal.
every season
@@L4ftyOne I disagree. Season 1 is incredible, season 2 is alright, and the rest are not up to par.
@@rhidley8314 you think season 2 is better than 3?
@@L4ftyOne Yep, everyone sleeps on season 2 and 3 (and apparently we're getting a season 4!)
@@kojiattwood season 2 is horribly put together. Valcoro is a pretty great character. Season 3 isn’t bad. His partners relationship with dogs is really memorable. The time flipping is well done and I love the twist at the end with the little girl and the monastery. But ultimately the season is still not amazing. Season 1 is the only one where everything comes together
I have to say that I find a little f'd up that you berate Marty for being concerned that a minor's working as a prostitute.
Cause they don't trust his motives and he cheats on his wife with that same prostitute a few years later so their suspicions were right
@@Diegesislmao are you actually comparing that to cheating? Woman logic
@@Diegesis Nonsense. In that scene, Marty had zero interest in the girl whatsoever. He's a law enforcer, and he saw an *underage child being pimped out for sex.* Marty was entirely in the right, and him being a flawed human being who's unfaithful to his wife doesn't automatically mean he's entirely incapable of ever being decent or morally correct in any scenario.
The fact is this; the girls watching let their dislike of Marty cloud their judgement so much that they were literally nodding and smiling in approval of *someone who pimps out children* just because that person was on the opposite side of the argument to Marty. That's messed up. Period.
They got no problems with the pimp….cause she’s a woman
12:40 - "You did your wife dirty, he didn't". I burst out laughing when I heard that line. Talk about unintended foreshadowing!
This story, implies stereotypical types of main heroes from books. Shaman(Rust) and the Warrior(Marty), wisdom and brutal strength. They are companions, not enemies.
So because cheated on his wife can’t be do his job as a police officer and be concerned an underage girl being a prostitute? That makes no sense.
They don't trust him. And their intuition was right cause in a couple years he's gonna start cheating on his wife with her.
@@Diegesischeating isn’t a crime
Doesn't take away from the fact they berated him for being concerned about her@@Diegesis
@@Diegesisthey don't trust him? I remember it was her who walked up to him in the bar years later, stop trying to defend their bad take. A bad take is a bad take
@@DiegesisThat's not what happened at all. There's no hint - not even the slightest inkling - that Marty is interested in that underaged girl during that scene, and him cheating with her later once she's a consenting adult is completely irrelevant. He's a law enforcer, and he's rightfully against child prostitution. His other flaws as a husband don't negate his correctness on the matter. Period.
Here's what actually happened: The girls reacting here have such a hatred for Marty that they let it unreasonably cloud their judgement - so much so that they'd rather side with someone who was *literally pimping out children* than accept Marty was right in that scene. That's messed up.
Hell, it doesn't even matter what outlook you take. Prostituting children for money is a thousand times worse than cheating, no matter the angle. What that woman was doing was far, far worse than anything Marty ever did in this show, and siding with the woman in that scene is questionable at best - and downright vile at worst.
She looks great, and all, but I heard she's only a so-so court stenographer.
You guys missed, "What was that, a down payment?" from Cohle.
The first season of the True Detective series is the best, IMO. Each season is its own story, with its own cast, FYI. So glad you discovered this and are reacting to it. Glad you are loving it.
I agree, how do you feel about the other 2? I think they're super underrated
@@ricearoni744 They are. People can't help to compare them to the first one. But Season 1 is a masterpiece. Even if they are not on that level, they are pretty good.
You ladies had such a viseral reaction to seeing Rust Cohle's visual distortion episodes. ----- That was really satisfying to see you gals enter his mind and feel the heavy tripping that he goes through. AWesome reaction.
I must disagree with your opinion of Marty being a "bad" this or a "bad" that. He is a flawed (in some cases a VERY flawed) individual. He means well (as we all do) but more often than not is "human" like we all are. Full of vices and insecurities. Your reaction is as amazing as this show was so cheers ladies.
Their focus on this episode is affair>serial killer lol
It’s nauseating & unfortunately likely to be a mainstay for the series reaction. Yippee 😒
@@MrDMF567 Shitting on him for caring about a teenage prostitute, of all fuckin things. Genuinely can’t stand women like that. Literally just pouring over every single thing he does, even when it’s the right thing. Imagine that.
"Good boobs," the understatement of the century.
Every time I rewatch this show, I pick up on new interpretations that make it even more depressing.
18:57
It's called HPPD (Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder).
It's pretty wild.
Edit: got the timestamp wrong lol
Maple saying she's innocent 😑
😂😂😂
And I'm surprises they missed the fact the girl was underage
They didn't. They just think it's fine because it's somehow empowering for a child to sell herself to old men. Feminism! or something.
Man y’all judging Marty the same way he does other people. Not saying he’s a good guy but you haven’t watched the whole show yet.
Right. So as the show goes on their opinion will be sculpted by the new episodes as the show intended.
I'm not gonna wait for 5 seasons to decide how I feel about Walter white. I'm going to have my first impressions and see where it goes as the journey continues.
@@Diegesis After I commented I sat and thought that people can only react to the information given. I hear ya. Thanks for the conversation.
13:19 “not only is he not a horrible person like you…” right before he beats information out of people who have no obligation to talk to him 🙄
Zero self awareness , narcissistic, misandrist, hypocritical, feminist , pro pedo , prejudice, are just a couple things I've been noticing from these two. one seems to be the follower and one the leader lol they could try to turn that judgemental gaze inwards from time to time, might just do them some good .
The Oatmeal described a man wearing just a T shirt as: “A sea cucumber poking out of a wizard’s robes.”
7:54 And you wonder why he's fooling around with her! 🤣
Alexandra daddario 😄
14:40 Thats what I really liked about Rust was his kinda dry humor throughout the series and Marty just deadpanning him the whole time
"Men, process your trauma. Its ok!" ... first understand that by doing his job and bringing a girl killer to justice is literally Rustin processing his trauma through action. Men process through deeds and women process through socialization.
no he isn't lol, that isn't how it works. women don't process through socialization. They process through mental healthcare, same as men.
@@nhoig-bl3uo Also not true. Everyone processes trauma differently. Some people are able to process appropriately. Those who can't, go to therapy.
“ do you think he’s on the cough syrup again?” 😂😂😂😂
They’re real and they’re spectacular.
Maple saying she's innocent had me lmao.
Yea naivete is not Innocence lol
You guys are the first reactors I've seen comment on the fact that Marty's side chick knows he's married lol
C.I.: Confidential Informant. Usually more than a "snitch", a person whose information has been tested, found to be credible to a standard, and registered with the department. In Narcotics, they're either working to reduce their own charges or are a mercenary doing it for money, sometimes big money.
A morally and ethically gray practice that has many pitfalls for cops and dealers.
👍
Snitching is spontaneous and being a CI is an arrangement. A CI is a snitch but a snitch isn't necessarily a CI.
You ladies are in for a nice ride. This hands down is the best season of any show of all time in my honest opinion.
Was basically watching a 8 hour movie.
Kids trying to judge a realistic portrayal of flawed men doing hard jobs. Makes me laugh.
Some of the best videos on this channel is seeing you ladies react together your reactions are very organic
I can actually confirm that after a 2-3 year stint with people, and umm narcotics I shouldn't be messing with, it was really hard to drive a car for the next year or two even after I had been clean for awhile. Lots of illusory effects with street lights and road lines. Boatloads of anxiety also, both due to this, and just regular anxiety while on the road. Scary stuff. All this from someone who was otherwise a very calm person on the road before all of this.
Hahshs they both are like: I can fix him
Unfortunately few friends like friends who hold them accountable. I once got to a point where people only showed up because they needed someone to be honest with them, sometimes to their own actions. Which is fine... But, idk... Just come hang out, sometime?
We _really_ need access to healthcare, and by extension, mental health. I felt like that 5¢ Psychology stand Lucy has in The Peanuts meme.
I love the moment where yall are talking Cohl up and how good a person and detective he is and then he just beats the shit out of two innocent mechanics and you realize he's a bad guy too, just a different flavor
its a crime if that isn't the thumbnail XD
I don't know how you're able to resist binging this masterpiece of a TV season but I hope you can get around to doing just that. :D
Alexandra D'Addario does indeed have an exceptional set of knockers. She makes a fine guitar string too.
Definitely one of my favorite seasons of a favorite show.
Enjoy the channel, just kind of wish this series was chosen for a solo reaction.
Definitely to much talking
Woody Harrelson had Arianna really animated this episode
14:15 that is a bunny doll with some high heels hanging to let drivers know the bunny ranch is that way
“I couldn’t concentrate on what this old man was saying”
6:16 I hope enough people listen to and acknowledge this
The term used for persisting (not always permanent, but can be) visuals is HPPD.
That is no fair, she is just too fine.
I just love watching people discover the genius of this show ❤ your commentary is fun!
Two episodes in and you are not even scratching the surface of what´s to come...
I have to subscribe because the feeling of watching it again on my own will not be the same as watching it through the eyes of people who haven´t seen it.
Great reaction. Can’t wait to see your reactions to the rest of the season. You’re gonna be completely blown away.
Shirt and no bottoms. We call that "Donald Duck-ing" around here...
I'm loving this. This series was really deep and had so many twists and turns. It took me 2 or 3 watches to really understand the characters. I love the reactions with you both, you work so well together.
Alexandra daddario was perfect 😍
This show is going to blow ya'lls minds! I watched it in 2014 when it came out and absolutely loved it. I try to re watch it every year and see new things every single time. I was actually thinking of re watching it recently, I guess you guys convinced me.
CI's are Confidential Informant's. So, the identities of your Informant's, or snitches, are on a need to know basis. Basically, if they're close enough to the target, the informant already has a target painted on their back too, so you can't risk their identities by just talking shit with your fellow officers, because you never know who's dirty/on the take.
Them big nattys are legendary ladies
I love Arianna's way of thinking, she is very intelligent, empathetic and mature.

As someone who did a lot of acid and coke and downers in college, those trippy flashbacks were shit gets distorted…that actually does happen. Sober 10 years and every once in a blue moon, I got make myself sit down and wait for it to pass.
With that said, I highly discourage just driving thru it and white knuckling it like Matthew does 😅
It's HPPD,, probably from the acid not the downers it coke. It's pretty rare but yea it's real.

Great that you guys are watching this. Not so great that I have to wait a week between installments. Of course, when it originally aired, I had to wait a week. Anyway, perhaps the best fictional TV show I've ever seen.
Probably the best one Season of Television.
Hands down.
So glad you guys are doing TDS1. Wish I could go back in time and watch it for the first time again, but watching others react to it is the closest thing!
I'd probably pay 30 or 40 bucks for a pill that would wipe my mind of the show, so I could watch it again for the first time, lol.
This is the thing that troubles me, for I cannot forget Carcosa where black stars hang in the heavens.
So, so, SO excited/thrilled for you guys.
Like you, I would TOTALLY mainline the show until you finished it/until you dropped, but...I'm also glad we get your slow, considered thoughts on it, as you go.
The show is great and I love these reactions but I can't help being amused at the picture of Alexandra Daddario in the thumbnail. I think a lot of people - we males in particular - might be somewhat familiar with that imagery...
These two episodes have been fantastic with you two dunking on Marty. Justifiably so, but I've never seen reactors go so hard on him, it's so entertaining!
This season is such an incredible ride, one of the best seasons of television ever, it's so strong in every area.
You two work in tandem really well, both of you are great on your own but the combination works also!
Damn. So hard on Marty
The automatic captions were good "Welcome to Diet Jesus", as opposed to that old fattening Jesus we used to have.
sometimes you're not in the mood for full fat jesus
Very entertaining. Loving these!
Super weirded out to see y'all defended child prostitution though
The thing about True Detective is that it isn't like your standard crime drama. It's so full of minuscule details that can be missed if you don't pay attention. It doesn't hold your hand through the show either. It just tells the story how it is, how it wants to.
The term Maple is looking for is a flashback, as in an acid flashback from too many years tripping.
Keep the True Detective reactions coming
Not going to lie, the way you reacted to that prostitution scene like it was some "badass girl boss" moment really rubbed me the wrong way. The fact that you don't like Marty, and that the woman had some kind of feministic response to his concerns, has absolutely no bearing in the fact that *she was pimping out an underage child.* Unless you're literally pro-child prostitution, you should NOT have been nodding your heads and agreeing with her on that scene.
Only show to snag an Emmy from prime breaking bad. Very worthy.
When I saw her react to fight club, how she figured it out halfway through the fucking movie I remember thinking, “she needs to watch true detective”
I'm like you guys. they havent watched many movies which is why i asked them to join the team. then over time i've seen how they react to certain movies and i've started getting an idea of things they'd like. after fight club, yes true detective was a shoe in. unfortunately she has seen Mindhunter
That photograph of Dora Lange and the men in hoods on horseback is mirrored in other things later.
I didn't know cheating men were hated more than child prostitution pimps.
I literally will be counting the days until the next episode reaction. I've seen it probably half a dozen times already but it never gets old especially when seen through a fresh pair or two of eyes.
Choosing that scene for the thumbnail tho...
Woody Harrison in out of the furnace is amazing to. Never really see him play a bad guy great in that
You guys should pause it when you do long talks
We'd get a 2 hour edited version...they can't stop talking lol
