      @@careynordstrand1805 I think if you're just noodling it's okay. I actually think it's kind of neat how you do it. Since you play that lick in every demo, we get to hear how different it sounds across all your different pickups.

      @@drphalanges1520True that. I'm not too hard on myself for playing the same licks. It's just what we do. But I do continually try to push outside my comfort zone. It's an interesting exercise at the least.

    I'm really hearing the difference in the pickups here. The WWs have that mid rangey sound, slight round off in the highs. Finger style seems "zingy", like I hear more of the harmonics, and less of the string contacting the fret compared to the CCs. They bring a sort of breathing, shimmering top end character. Cello-like, almost vocal in ways, especially with both pickups on. Slap style commands a lot of authority and clarity even on a rosewood board! Seem "flattering" to finger style playing.
    The CCs dail in the top end, less emphasis on the harmonics, slight midrange cut, and a great deal more of the string-fret contact. Definitive slap tones. Finger style produces "chewy" highs and less shimmering overtones, more of the fundamental. I feel like this style loses some of the old school j bass "magic" that the WWs have, but that's likely just my preference talking. What is lost in "magic" is more than made up for in articulation. Excellent for highly dense and dynamic playing, and generally clear/clean/modern bass tones.
    Excellent micing and cool playing too. Thanks for the audio upgrade!

      One fact to be considered is that the first JB (the one with the WWs) has an alder body, while the second (the one with the CCs) has an ash body. In order to get a more faithful idea of the pickups character it should be necessary to hear each pair on each bass, in my opinion.

    • @mysteryloaf
      @mysteryloaf 8 лет назад +2

      that's a fair point. Alder and Swamp ash do have different sounds, but in a body, ime the difference isn't as drastic as that between a maple and a rosewood fretboard, for example.
      For my mileage, I feel like i can listen "through" the wood and hear the pickups themselves. Would be a different story had the fretboard materials been totally different. Your milage and experience with tone woods likely differs from mine, tho.
      Thanks for the insight!

    Hi Carey. Would you say both types of J Blade are good for pick playing? Say for harder rock band sounds, like Alice in Chains or Tool?

    Would the 14" radius ones be a good choice for the Fender Marcus Miller V, to get an even string to string volume?
