    I picked up this book because of you and I am so glad I did because I loved it! I cried so much on the last 20% of it. The characters were so pure and the story was captivating and heartwarming. I also really enjoyed the audiobook. The narrator did a great job with the different voices of the children. Thanks for the awesome recommendation! I wouldn’t have found this book otherwise.

    Super love this novel! It asks a lot of questions, while being lively and exquisite, wild and propulsive. Its narrative is often playful, but its themes are far more serious.
    “True friendship and family,” the novel says, “are treasures waiting to be found.” And once you learned where to find it, you’d wish you were there.

    This book also reminded me of the movie Short Term 12 that looked at what it's like for children to live in the system. Sal's poem reminded me a lot of a lighter version of Marcus's rap in particular.
    I always find it funny when people talk about how happy this book is cos I cried alllll the way through it whoops.

    • @ConnorOBrien
      @ConnorOBrien  4 года назад +2

      That’s fair. Phee wasn’t really as present as some of the others, but that may be because she spent more time with Zoe than with Linus and Arthur. Theodore also could have used to more limelight, I think. Gosh, I hope with all the great feedback that book has gotten so far, that Klune is given and wants an opportunity to expand the story.

    I loved loved loved this book. I just finished the audio book this evening, and I can’t wait to listen to it again. Daniel Henning’s performance of the children, especially Chauncey and Lucy, had my LOLing. My only cons were, due to the language, they were clearly meant to have a British dialect, which was ignored in the audio performance. The other con is that Klune down played the fact that Linus went back to fight for them. Yes, it is acknowledged in the end, but I thought he was too apologetic and judged for leaving. If he hadn’t gone back, the orphanage would have been shut down, and I wish he would have gotten due credit for that. Yes, Linus was scared to stay, but if he had not left, there wouldn’t have been the happy ending we got. This book is a joy from start to finish, and I hope that TJ Klune will someday write a follow up novel.

    • @ConnorOBrien
      @ConnorOBrien  4 года назад

      The audiobook is truly fantastic! I have an audiobook that I'm currently making my way through, but I hope to listen to The House in the Cerulean Sea again soon! I didn't get the impression that they were clearly meant to be British. I thought it was more meant to be a book set a little outside of time with some historical elements. For some reason, I assumed the house was set in northeast US, like Maine.
      With Linus's decision to finish his assignment, I thought it fit his character extremely well. Linus would have a hard time not following through with a commitment, but the children would equally have a hard time understanding why Linus would do what he did. I agree though that Linus is painted a bit more villainous than maybe he should have been. I saw that Klune would suggest a sequel on twitter a little while ago, but the requirement wasn't quite met. I think he has a lot of ideas that Tor will publish instead though.

    I just finished this book (and same, i listen to this as an audiobook lol) and i completely agree with all the things that you said. I started reading this because I was searching through the LGBTQ+ tag and got interested in the summary (best decision I've ever had). I really wish there was a sequel because I'm just really REALLY invested in all of the characters, very curious about the new kid in the epilogue, and just wish for more casual everyday life of parents Linus-Arthur and their seven children

    • @ConnorOBrien
      @ConnorOBrien  4 года назад

      We basically picked this up for the same reason lmao! I was browsing my library's audiobooks and saw that it was tagged as LGBTQ+ . I was like, alright let's see how this is. I generally like a lot of Tor titles. I saw on Twitter that he would pitch a sequel if the book reached a certain milestone for sales. I'm not sure if it was reached it, but it recently (today) was a USA Today bestseller. Fingers crossed!

    I read it and loved it. But.... I love TJ Klune's books. He's one of my favorite authors, so it wasn't a surprise I liked it so much. He wrote another young adult novel called "The Extraordinaries", which is also a really fun book. Be warned though. If you decide to follow TJ Klune, he writes several different genres. The "Green Creek" series is one of the best shifter series I've read. "Tales from Verania" is total whimsical fantasy that is hysterically funny and also incredibly moving at times. The same with the "Tell Me It's Real" series. Other books are gritty or gripping or emotionally devastating. So.... be warned that reading one TJ Klune novel does not necessarily mean you know what to expect with other novels.

      Robert Carnevali I’ve since read quite a few of TJ’s books. I have posted some video reviews for some of his other books since, if you want to check them out. So far, I think BOATK, Wolfsong, Ravensong, and Withered + Sere are out. I’ve definitely become a fan!

    • @bobcarn
      @bobcarn 3 года назад

      @@ConnorOBrien BOATK is, I believe, the first book he wrote. He's said he had problems going back to read it as he was writing the sequels because, well, it was his first and he didn't like seeing what he thought were mistakes. LOL. I've read all of his books with the exception of John and Jackie, but that's because the subject matter sounded like it would hit too close to home for me and open old scars. Murmuration is one of my favorite sci-fi books. Do you find that the descriptions of the books in Amazon don't do them justice? I held off on reading his books for a long time because the descriptions made them sound different than they really were. Like, The Lightning Struck Heart and Tell Me It's Real are hysterically funny, and that didn't come off like that in their description. Wolfsong sounded like a sappy shifter romance, so I didn't read it for a loooong time, but when I did, I realized it was one of the most epic stories I had read! I was totally hooked and empathizing with Ox by the 2nd page, I never got hooked so quickly before.

She’s there, but I felt like Linus only bonded with her through his interactions with the others of that makes sense. Regardless, I looove this book.

    I am raising a red flag on "The House in the Cerulean Sea". This book is rather controversial, to say the least. Klunes source material for this book was Canada's Sixties Scoop. Considering the history of Canada residential boarding schools and the latest news (the remains of 215 unidentified indigenous children have been found at a former residential school), this should not be praised without proper education on how this book came together. This author is exploiting indigenous trauma for profit.

    Dying to read this book now! I've heard so many great things about it. I don't read a huge amount of middle grade books but this is definitely going on my TBR.

      I think it’s an adult novel, but it could appeal to a wide range of readers. It’s published by regular Tor, but I’ve seen others say that it reads a bit younger. It doesn’t have any sexually explicit scenes which may be why. It would be hard though to get middle graders to want to read about a 40 year old man, I think lol

    I just finished this book and I don’t think I’ll get over it for a while. Had to watch your review because I don’t want to move past it. 😭

      It's so sweat. I've since reread it, and I enjoyed it just as much a second time!
