New SEAT Leon 2020 review - better than a VW Golf?

- Опубликовано: 1 июн 2024
- Introducing the all-new SEAT Leon! It’s effectively a Spanish Golf, given it’s built on the same platform as the German hatchback market leader. So with that in mind, it means you’ll receive some nice new styling updates and tech, but for a slightly cheaper price than the VW! But given the price isn’t that different, should you just dig a little deeper into your pockets and choose the Golf? Stick with Mat and find out!

This video will become relevant for me in ~8 years.
Same
It will be relevant to young drivers being born today in 2037 when they will be will be able to insure a 17 year old banger.
Chanchito In 2037 I will still drive my Seat Ibiza from 2006😉
Feel ya bro.. 😢
Get a job and get money
I drove a SEAT recently as a hire car and the number of VW bits all around it is unreal. I honestly don't think it matters much what the badge says whether it says Audi, SEAT, Volkswagen or Skoda. They're all made by the VW group and the thing that matters more is the platform under the skin. If it's the same platform, then pick whichever one comes out the cheapest for the features you want.
This looks better than the golf by a country mile.
Yes
Matt delivers the most honest reviews of cars. All german car reviewers are salespersons with cameramen. Everything is nice and pretty and good. Thanks, Matt!
Also i prefer the outside look of the predecessor, but the inside is a decade old, this is a big update.
Looks like a Mazda from the front, an Astra from the side, and a Kia from the back 😆
Cachicochip was about to say it looks like an Astra from the side
And a Ford in general
so it looks like a car overall?
4 Cars for the price of 1 Great!
It's the most generic shape possible
"The logo looks like someone named Leonard signed his name and had a stroke half way through" 😭😂
😂
Matt: "The rear of this car looks like something from the future"
Honda Civic 8th gen still looking like the future since 2006
Jordan Lucky what?
That is my favorite Civic generation. I love the shape!
@@mirumask Mine too, proud owner of one as well!
100%. I can't believe how fresh that generation Civic still looks for a 15 year old design.
🤢that looks horrible like every other Honda
Stop being bored of the cars us mere mortals can afford
Can't even afford that car if it's new
I can afford but I buy old cheap cars
Smart man.
@ you might be a bit stupid.. just saying..
@ ooo that's a bit better. Non of that is true , but what is true is its dumb to buy a brand new car now when there's about to be a financial collapse the world has never seen. Buckle up 👍🏻
I love the new design of the Leon and the improvements on the rear passengers seat I'd definitely get this rather than the Golf and it looks even better in terms of the exterior designing.
Nice joke
@@andorszen Nope, i also think that the new Golf is boring as usual
@@mikemendoza88 sorry for me both is a big joke next to the new mazda 3
@@andorszen well the new mazda 3 isnt ugly but it looks worse than its predecessor and definitely has less space just if you take a look at the rear portion of the car and that hideous c pillar
New golf looks worse than the leon yes.
I love how you scrutinise all the subtle design features. No one else is as thorough. Carwow reviews are my go to for new cars. Thanks for the great work!
I bought a 1.5 130 Golf SE 7.5 a couple of years ago and at the time priced up the Leon to the same spec. It came to thousands more! Plus it had the older 1.4 engine rather than the new one. It’s honestly the nicest car I’ve ever owned.
Great review Matt! I've been looking forward to seeing this review since the new Leon was revealed. I agree not convinced about the signature style "Leon" - but I hear SEAT is going to do be doing that with all new models. Overall looks a great car though.
13:52 Matt showing us how kids are made for that isofix
Seats are pretty useful 😏

BMW : Our i drive system is the best infotainment system ever.
Matt: But now not as good as the new mercedes mbux
Ha ha ha
Very funny 😂😂🤣🤣
I hate the Mercedes Mbux haha
I saw concept photos of the new Leon when I went to the dealership to buy mine last year in December - I bought a FR 150 Black Edition in black instead, still happy with my purchase.
Well in therms of pricing I´m pretty sure that in a few months this will became one of the most economic hatchbacks available yet a pretty good option. I would definitely buy a Leon before a Golf or a Scala. Apart from that, Seat always gets a good handling for it´s cars.
13:53 well that was definitely 18+
Канал По сути lol
Really
It was an ad
NOOOO XDDD
I quite like how this new Leon looks but almost £27,000 at the moment for the cheapest DSG would be too much for me!
Depends they usually end up being cheaper after discounts.
Probably could get one for 220 a month or so which is “reasonable”
what a peasant
@@eeshunique judging without even having a profile picture...
@@eeshunique DSG may be good, but the interior is so cheap, gloomy and very plastic.
I love the Leon, it is beautiful, I just think that it is the colour that doesn't suit it as much. It looks stunning in red though :)
in magnetic gray is just amazing
It's another "cheaper golf" that isn't actually that cheap.
In fact it's more expensive than the Golf lol
It looks much better than the new golf. Golf 8 looks like toyota corolla...
try and then you tell me! i tried both and have it clear ;)
Actually Seat Leon has same engine as Volkswagen Golf. Its basically same group
And about the price...if you upgrade seat leon until the top , you pay some money as a golf, but a normal Golf not the best one.
@@anakakaka Spec for Spec - with permitted dealer offers you'll find it ends up being at least £2000 cheaper than the Golf. And if you buy a higher spec version with the live rear axle, the only difference is the Golf is quieter in the cabin at medium speeds. That means you can get a high spec Leon for the price of a mid range Golf.
Simple question - is a badge worth £2000? To some people it is. To others it isn't.
On Finace it's £50 per month with interest, or, cash it's a nice little holiday.
I actually like it, apart from the wheels.
And despite what Matt said I doubt that those are 18". That said it's a press car, I'm sure there are better configurations.
@@RdcsVtec he said they're 17 inch on this particular car. The top spec has 18 inch wheels
@@joem8213 he did? Maybe I missed it. However, even the 17" have the potential to be good wheels, it's actually a sensible size, for instance the Ford Focus use a good set of sporty 17". Which lead to cheaper tires and rolling confort without losing that much on car control and feel, but the ones on the leon are a bit ugly.
Why is every new hatchback turning into a Ford Focus
Because its the best to drive and exterior styling is also probably the best in the segment. Its just practicality and infotainment that suffers
I was literally thinking that... the ford focus is the daddy of all hatchbacks... ild say say bmw 1 series and Mercedes A class including Audi A3 have better interior though
Dee M the focus has and always will be the hatch back king. The ST and RS models are superb.
@@kwl189 and the first when it comes to problems
Dee M its been the case for a long time and ford never bothers to resolve it presumably because it would then price itself above those other brands to do so. Though I would say the typical german brands really do charge far too much for what they offer. Its really the badge you’re paying for.
The new Leon is more beautiful than the new Golf. In fact, I always liked the Leon's design over the Golf's
Agreed. The old golf looked better than both.
I think the new Golf is nicer, but it's very close. The back is really, really good though with the bold crease.
I prefer the mk2 Leon because the hidden door handle made it sporty.
@@LightSaber12345 nah Leon mk4(this new one) looks way better than older gens
@@AlexOPMR golf mk7 > all Leons
Just been to see this car in the real. Its very colour dependent the ones I saw weew desire red and the grey both look far better than the white and the 17s actually look better in the metal than on screen. Inside the seats are lovely supportive and comfortable, and feels very premium. So much so.. I will be ordering i think!
Matt, you're wearing Converse trainers. I destintively remember you taking the pi## out of adults wearing them 😂
I'll stick with my 2019 Leon Cupra 290 thanks.
Nice car that mate. Not to many about either.
There were really tempting deals on them. I went sensible with an ibiza. Glad i did now, cos jobs pretty much gone.....

I owned Leon second gen. And then third gen. And then new Ibiza and now just bought last gen Leon again. I looooove Seat👍
Why do modern cars have everything controlled by touch screen I want a knob and button

Great review Matt.
I've always been a bit of a SEAT fanboy. I actually still drive with the first SEAT Leon Cupra R since 2003.
I have to say I'm not super impressed with the looks of this gen, nuch prefer the previous one. On the plus side, it appears to be fairly practical.
It's as if SEAT copied the Ford Focus.
Awesome review Mat!😸
Great review, man!
I'm waiting to see the cupra😅
Supra?
@@SkaiTalks he said cupra😂
They revealed it and it looks awesome. But yeah, final production version might be a bit changed. I am now curious about the price of the 2.0 variants, both 245 and 300 hp.
Skye Playz cupra is seat’s luxury brand, often making the more powerful variants of seat cars
@@onelyone6976 perhaps you mean Seat's sporty brand, to my knowledge they don't add any luxury to the cars.
Seat Leon looks like the king of its class
Matt Watson is one of my preferred car reviewers on the internet , genuine, passionate, full of enthusiasm, swift explaination yet surprisingly clarity (You may 0.75x the speed thou😄 ) , fluid, & entertaining as ever.
Love my 2019 Excellence Lux. Seat threw almost every option on this model & my 2.0 TSI has independent rear suspension
They do independent suspension if you get any engine with more than 150bhp
It's actually funny you regarded the new Leon lettering on the hatch as a "bad thing". I think it looks very nice and helps differentiate the Leon from the more serious Golf and A3 siblings. It's a more youth-appealing car now this new Leon!
I also think the new Leon looks better overall than the new Golf 8. The Golf 8 has a nice face but the new Leon has a nice face too but it also has a nicer profile and rear end, so it wins.
edit: "All versions get torsion beam rear suspension"? So, the new Cupra will get it as well, won't it? In any case, it is unfair for the Leon.
6:44, it’s actually a 5 door because it doesn’t have a separate boot.
Best review. Very good vehicle, elegant design. I just like it.
At the start of the video, I agreed with Matt about the look of the front. By the end of the video, I grew to like it. Its quite nice!!!
13:17
"You can fit a flattened bottle in there." There, fixed that for you.
I have to say I love my 2018 Leon FR ST, it looks better than these new models, its quicker, the 0-60 is better, and I've found mine to be nothing short of brilliant, and I would so get the estate over the hatchback every time. Mine also has the sports kit on it, 21" alloys, different grille, skirts etc, it looks great and is a great sleeper, the number of times I've left a golf etc at the lights only to see the look of the driver, totally surprised by how fast off the line I am. It has the mode settings, and in sport the ride does become particularly firm, but through the bends its such a sharp precise car for a FWD. So I am a big fan of my nearly 3 year old Leon, not sure if the new range is going to grab me in the same way, we shall see 🤔🤔
İ really like your videos.too many details in shortets time possible.you are definitely a car genius.
i am happy he got a new stick. He deserves it. Its bigger as well.
I like its face more than Golf's.
Edit: is my sentence grammatically correct? I'm not an English speaker. 😆
Yes, not so bad...
Yes you are grammatically write budy 👍👍😉
Hammad Khan right*....😂😂👍🏻
8:32 Not true. Leons with > 150 hp come with multilink rear suspension
Not any more, First Edition FR only which is the £30K car only. You are really paying more money for a worse car than the Mk3.
Also there is only one power up from 150, on the Mk3, MultiLink was only available on 180PS 1.8TSI and 184 2.0TDI.
Golf 8 with 150 hp comes with multilink rear suspension ;-)
None of you will be driving aggressive enough to notice the different rear suspension 😂
Matt just explained UK supermarkets to me perfectly
The Golf looks like a wardrobe on wheels , so the Leon wins hands down there . It doesn't seem a bad drive either so , if I ever get too old to get into my Mazda MX5 , this would be worth a look .
Been waiting for a while for this review! I ordered a new Seat Leon ST... and wanted to know Mat’s opinion on the car. Thanks for this review 😃👍🏻
How is your experience?
love this one ;) Leon is the most beautiful Golf
Leon > Golf
Multi-link suspension does feature on New Leon, Matt, but only on engines with more than 150 BHP
I like how this video is divided into different bits
They have made a beautiful comfortable car! I would actually buy it! And I also like the lights!!
For the first time I disagree with Matt.
This car looks beautiful from every angle!❤️
Great video full of character....as usual🔥
Instead of 'sliding', you can also tap on the plus (blue) and minus (red) to set the temp.
Just had mine delivered and I absolutely love it
How do you feel about it now if you don't mind me asking? Going to have a look for one this weekend.
7:36 Matt - if you stopped waving the key around we could see what you were talking about!
Looks like VW is putting in some serious amount of cash for Seat to overtake lots of competitors on the market! Great looking car indeed 👍🏻
4:35 it’s funny how he mentions to move that seat up if you’re short and to move the seat down if you’re tall. I am 6’3 and I always have my seats in the highest setting just as long as my head is not touching the ceiling
please do the new octavia aswell. loving the vids
The design of this thing looks really awkward for a seat
I agree. It looks a bit clumsy and not stylishly compact.
In terms of aesthetics, the previous gen is unbeatable
Yep. We won't see a Leon as beautiful as mk3 anymore, I am so sure. And it will be probably the sexiest Sear car ever.

We have just had the new seat fr (71plate) the 1.5 petrol dsg we also have the Mk 7 golf tdi dsg and yeah it was quite nice to drive & surprisingly quick for what it is when you are already moving & the supercharger kicks in however it feels a bit flighty etc the mk 7 golf holds the road loads better & I actually prefer to drive it !! And there is 6yr age difference and 75k miles you can tell that they are the lower version with in the vw group so the seat is gone and now we are getting the new golf gtd the difference is unreal between them 👍🏻

The front looks great imo
The old one looks better
@@robloxfan4271 agreed, the old one was definitely more charming. This just looks like a Focus.
This version is ugly AF!!!!
It has a better design, interior and in general for me more desirable.
Like the review of the lower end cars for context well done and thanks even though it never buy one
Would be great to get a follow up and a proper review of the new Audi A3 sportback saloon? Any chance of that coming soon?
The all new SEAT Focus 1 Series Ceed LEON
The front looks a bit like a mazda 3
💯
Or a Ford
not a bad thing then, mazda 3s are so nice
Kia
Agreed, it's also got a bit of Mitsubishi Evo going on - loses a lot of the clean and crisp design language of the older model.
I am very much in line with you with regards to the design. Edgy and odd looking face and a nice rear sums it up. The price and interior space makes it worth considering if you are in the market for this type om car. Personally I'm done buying new cars which require oil changes and all the sorts of other maintenance that comes with having about 2.000 moving parts under the bonnet. The present is already electric.
I’ll stick with my 68 Astra K for now. Matt said himself it was a near perfect hatchback driving experience and I have never had reason to dispute that.
Be careful. The 1.4L turbo engines are deficient and prone to failure.
Why dont you do the vote stuff via the "i"-icon any longer?! I really liked it!

This car looks beautiful. I especially like the front end of it. Would prefer this to a Golf any day
Your taped
Unfortunately the back is pure Vauxhall Astra.
I'll take the Seat over the VW tbh
I have never found high load lid to be a problem, on the contrary I like it.
The Scala boot might be bigger but you dont get the room in the back as you do in the new Leon. Front of it looks better than the back imo. Preferred the bigger back lights of the out going model.
Can we get a review on the Octavia. Also a group test between the Octavia, Golf and Leon please.
I would say between the Octavia and the Passat, they are in a similar class.
Mihnea Lazăr The Octavia is Golf sized. The Superb is Passat’s rival really.
Matt will pick the VW everytime.

But I just want to know what happened to that bottle at 13:17?!
This Leon look more sporty than an Serie 1, A3, classe A and Golf
Why would you ever get the hideous new Golf instead of this one?!!
But I also prefer the overall look of the previous Leon generation, especially for the Cupra - they are much better and more sporty looking.
I'd definitely get the ST, it looks way better than this hatchback imo. Nothing beats the front end of the previous Leon though.
I had one of these Leons for a year followed by a Golf 8. The difference was unbelievable straight away in terms of how solid and well built the Golf felt compared to the Leon.
And the climate control / infotainment is much better in the Golf (not saying it’s very good though, would still prefer proper buttons and knobs)
Leon is larger than Golf, and it looks beautiful as well. However a VW Golf is always solid while driving, agree with you. That's why I am going to sell Leon to buy a Golf 8 soon. Even a Style Golf 8 is also better than a Leon FR. I drive both and eliminate Leon.
