IDK what is wrong with Matt because he is clearly a smart man since he has a Chemistry degree, and yet him and what feels like most other automotive journalists seem to think that if numbers aren't big enough then they don't exist. Like, air is what takes up ALL space that is not occupied by matter, so ANY change in the shape of the physical matter that is a normal bumper design will result in a change to the aerodynamics of the vehicle. A diffuser doesn't have to make 10% or more increase in downforce for it to affect the handling, 1% is just as real as 10%. It may not be as noticeable, but it is just as real. Also, idk what your laws are like in the UK in this regard, but in the US companies can easily be sued for false advertising, so every word that manufacturers use when making claims about a car's performance has to be technically/literally true, otherwise they run the risk of someone finding out and suing them. I'd be surprised if you all don't have something at least somewhat similar over there in the UK.
@@dragospahontu agreed with this, current VAG hot hatches just carry too many compromises. They're ergonomic nightmares, they've got the same weak sounding engine yet their prices are ridiculous. Only the Golf R saves some face because it's got way more power than they say, but then again for a few K more you're getting an A45... The only one which has something of its own is the RS3, because that engine is simply a gem.

The airco 'slider' isn't a slider. It's just a touch sensitive button under the red/blue. Not sure why Matt always says it needs to be slided cause just touching works as well and is just fine.

I bought my manual Leon Cupra 290 almost 5 years ago and beside being absolutely fun and perfectly reliable, I really don't think there's a cheaper, better alternative.
I got a 69 plate Cupra 290 with the 7 speed DSG, the golf R in drag but lack of the Haldex AWD (which is FWD 95% of the time any way). I wouldnt say there's no cheaper ways but they're nice looking cars, got a lot of grunt and a lot of untapped potential. You can remap the stock setup to run on 99 octane and gain up to 365HP without compromising the cars reliability, fuel economy when driving normally or drivability. Can't ask for more when you factor in all that!
Brilliant review, Matt. I like how you talk about the good stuff and not so good stuff. Still a great hot hatch overall. To me, better than the Golf. Then again I've always been a fan of Cupra since I bought my SEAT Leon Cupra R 210 eighteen years ago, and it still runs with 290k km on the clock!

Yeah and no, their first cars was an ugly SUV when it should have been the car that pretty much made their name. When they finally did release that car it arrived as a weaker limp wristed 245 hybrid or an under powered 245 2.0l. So it was slower, uglier and more expensive than the car it replaced and reviews seemed to suggest it didn't drive as well either. It's now finally taken them 2 years to get a car that at least matches the last gen models but still suffers from the fact that it is uglier and more expensive and arguably has a worse interior (at least when it comes to the infotainment and basic control interface)

Absolutely love the look of this car will definitely be looking to get a used one in the next 2 years or so this is currently top of my list followed closely by the Audi s3

Completely agree with you. I am struggling with the styling. I think it's the wheel base....it looks like a rectangle. I have a 69 plateau 290 and it's superb. But this one is pushing me towards the Clubsport or even an R.
