Introducing the all-new Skoda Octavia vRS!
So, what will you find in the vRS that you don’t get with the normal Octavia? Well under the bonnet, you’ll have a choice of petrol, diesel or hybrid engines. We’ve got the petrol here, which is a 2-litre turbo petrol that can produce 245hp & 370Nm.
As for design upgrades, you’ll find redesigned & sportier bumpers at the front and back, as well as an updated grille. Whilst inside, you’ll find a number of upgrades, from sports seats through to alcantara on the dash. And of course, don't forget masses of red stitching throughout! After all, red means sporty, of course.
So, it all sounds pretty good, right? But is it enough to tempt you away from the all-new VW Golf GTI? It may be slightly cheaper than the GTI, but is that enough? You’ll have to stick with Mat for his latest in-depth review to find out!

Škoda has always been a good car and spacious, in the last few years they have been getting better and better. Škoda is the only car that gives a lot for a small price.
So do Kia & Hyundai
Yea. I was never a fan of Skoda until I drove a second gen Superb. For its price, that car is awesome. Lots of space, lots of power and very comfortable. Changed my opinion pretty quick. For a normal working man, Superb estate or Octavia estate is all you really need.
Dont forget Seat
@@CheyyZ_ Seat is more expensive and in most part you get less modern tech

The Golf GTI had the same thud when he launched it, yet he didn't complain about it
@MIGHTY MQB is that the transmission mount underneath?
@MIGHTY MQB my 03 Beetle with the 2.0l does that if I spin the wheels. Same with my 02 Beetle TS. Massive amounts of clanging and banging when you let it rip.

Good point.
When it’s a Mazda or Subaru?
And only putting out 20bhp more than a new untuned Ford Sierra Cosworth did in 1988. Not great for a top of the range is it.

Vw need their margins after the emissions scandal. Instantly cheap black trim is now "premium"! Geniuses in the marketing department!
@@nickw9626 but black looks better?
My vw polo 1.9 sdi from 2003 was the cool looking, more agressive "black eddition". Black bumpers, black grill, black side door trim, black rearview mirrors and black steel wheels🔥
I can't stand chrome personally even on top end cars. It just looks old fashioned to me.
This scene is so nostalgic

I’ve got a 2006 VRS. Great car, never broken down and has barely needed anything than basic servicing since new. But 14 years of development and all that’s changed is a slightly bigger turbo on the same engine and a tablet on the dashboard. In the same time I’ve gone from owning a Nokia LCD phone to a Smartphone with 4K video and Elon Musk has gone from sticking laptop batteries in a 2nd-hand Lotus to making supercar-beating family cars, a global charging infrastructure and made space travel routine. Not only that, but the price of a new VRS has almost doubled since 2006. If manufacturers want my money, they need to sell me something I don’t own already and at 2x what I paid for it.
Well of course it's going to be much more expensive compared to 2006 due to inflation and a genaral increase in car prices. Everything is quite pricey these days
what drugs are you on my man? I need to try them, elon has done almost nothing except stealing a car company and reaping the profits
Some very good and well made points
I like it a lot actually, it's a pretty smart looking car! The new behind looks great 👌
Mat: "This is the hot hatch for sensible people"
Me: Wait, shouldn't it be a fastback, like the i30 Fastback N?
ruclips.net/video/CZPBe4Ru5Tg/видео.html
It is. Essentially anyway, it's a hatchback which is pretty much same in my mind but with less marketing bs.
You can also get an estate / wagon, whatever you want to call those. This is most practical of all although only about 50 more ltrs than the hatch.
The estate allows for pan roof too, if that's your thing.
To me, an AWD diesel VRS wagon, remapped for a bit more go, with adaptive suspension and cruise, lane keep etc is pretty much the perfect budget-ish does everything car.
I dunno why, but we call that "liftback" in Russia
Exactly, the Skoda Octavia it's not a hatchback!
It's a liftback (fastback). But you know, Type R isn't basiclly hatchback too. And nobody does give a f**k.
This sent me back to Matts carbuyer days...this view is refreshing

They do a 4x4 VRS but Matt didn’t mention it.
U can engage Sport mode with 1 touch of a gear lever. D/S moves between Comfort and Sport instantly.
the day has come that skoda surpasses vw in quality and styling
Nope, this thing is ugly. Mk7 and Mk7.5 are going to be hot for a while...I have seen people on VW threads who are choosing to buy the last available 7.5's over buying a new MK8.
I agree, way nicer than the mk8 golf.
@@LITTLEbigREG The MK 7.5 looked better than the MK8, VW wouldve won me over if they had good steering wheel controls and a better facelift, but im definitely getting the vRS with that beautiful Race Blue
I think they have been on par since the VRS MK3.
But it actually is a VW. Its the same everything, well apart from the styling which is subjective.
Yeah, we know, it's a Skoda... But what do you think, could this practical hot hatch be THE best new hot hatch of 2020? Let us know what you think below!

Thats not a crappy drive changer imo
Hi Matt. Octavia vRS iV is not lowered, due to the baterry protection. The other RS are lowered. The plastic bit in the boot should slide right behind the rear seats from the top.
Don't know if it would work for the Octavia, but I changed away from Pirelli tyres on a Superb 2.0tsi and fitted it with Hancook K115s. Found them to be quieter, fantastic in the wet, but probably got 30miles less on a tankful. Steering felt a tad sharper but nothing you'd get excited about.
Consider Michelin Pilot Sport 4's. I had a bad experience with the original VRS Bridgestone tyres, difference was night & day.
The new noise regulations are making every new car sound so sad
I'd like to see the comparison on handling between VRS and normal Octavia.
It’s actually a lot easier to turn off the traction control, pressing the set button next to the driving mode button, brings it up straight with other things
Great video as always Mat, despite super correct-and-boring Octavia! If this is a place for a wishlist (obviously it isn't), would you be able to review 5 series LCI? It's not a massive update, but it has new engines, slightly updated interior, new iDrive 7 and urban cruise control with a function to stop on red lights. Would be interesting to see your down-to-earth feedback!
Mat when deciding to go out with a girl:
Should I....
Avoid it?
Consider it?
Shortlist it?
OR just go right ahead and BUY IT?

Hey carwow!
Deffo the manual petrol for me, even though the 2019 1L petrol manual we have is definitely more than enough power, and doesn't have the stupid electric handbrake

Skoda should come and replace VW's internal combustion models in the US.

You can actually stick the parcel shelf behind the rear seats, so you have it secured.
I can’t tell if this is the 2021 bmw 5 series or a skoda octavia
Try them both
This, in estate form ? Yes please
I like the start button placement, out of the way.
The car looks great from the outside and the sport front seats
Looks more like the BMW 4 Gran coupe than the BMW 4 Gran coupe
When are you going to review the cupra leon or fortmentor?
I really like the way these skodas look I wish we were able to get them in the us
When i heard that it had a AWD option i was happy
An estate version would be awesome!

Matt, just to complete the Octavia range any chance you can review the Octavia Scout?
I feel like installing a good sports exhaust would make it more exciting. Looks good though. Unfortunately this brand isn't sold in my country, as far as I know
Last time I was this early corona were only headlamps on bmws
And on a beer.
Personally i think out of whole VAG group Skoda has the best styling. Skodas are simply beautiful, better looking than audi even.
It's a close one I won't lie. I honestly think the Audi just about wins it for me. Skoda is very closely behind it and then VW.
@@matthewk9131 lambo: am i a joke to u?
@@dennispiechnik4422 😂😂😂😂😂. "About that". *runs off* (Jumps in S8)
This new generation of Skoda does look quite good, I'll give you that. As to whether they look better then Audis, I guess it depends on the car. The A3 looks like hot garbage to me so the Octavia wins hands down in this class.
I think Audi's lost their way in terms of design this generation. You do get some pretty innovative designs like the A7, but even that car is a massive disappointment compared to the old one which was easily the sexiest car in their lineup.
Seat's are looking pretty schmick these days...
You probably figured out by now that if you keep pressing the MODE button it will cycle through the mode options. By default it's in Normal; it takes only two clicks on the MODE button to enter the Sport - it's not the easiest, but at least it doesn't require you to search it on the screen.

I am liking every Skoda I see recently, I really love their design angles, no matter which model it is, to me every vehicle looks attractive. I guess like the sharp angles on Lamborghinis. 😊
I've got a Skoda Kodiaq, and I both can cycle driving mode by pressing button, and turn off stabilty by pressing/long pressing dedicated button. Really weird why it is not so in this car...
Funny enough, my manual 1.4tsi does the same when it loses traction. I was hoping the vrs has no such issues. Not the case, sadly
I'd love to see a drag race between this and the awd diesel version.
Thanks for this review. Just bought a manual one - not on Carwow yet though...
how's the manual compared to the auto?
@abhinay can't answer that yet I'm afraid it will be a few months before I get it!
@@DrPepper22222 oh, that's fine, update me when you get it

Hi, I got it in January. The car is great and the manual gearbox is brilliant. I didnt drive the mk4 auto but I did the mk3 and even though everyone loves autos, I still hate them. I enjoy driving and autos just don't cut it for me. However a word of warning, driving and mechanical the car is brilliant. Technology, its terrible. The user interface with no buttons is unintuitive, the voice command is completely pointless as normal, and there's a variety of glitches such as the heater controls disappearing and last sat nav destinations not being saved. If you look on the briskoda website you'll see loads of others having the same. Great car, infotainment is 'bleeding edge' and just not good enough.
The best car ever by what you get for the money! I absolutely love love love Skoda cars, especially Octavia RS models. I dream of owning one of those some day! 🤞😍
It sounds fine to me! One other point. Isn’t it considered really bad to floor a new car (new engine/transmission) that hasn’t been properly broke in?
For me this has nothing to do with a "hot hatch". It's a sporty limousine, but do you define it as a hatchback?
I think this is better looking than the MK8 Golf and MK4 Leon. Fantastic job Škoda! 👏🏼
This entire video felt like I was watching the VW Golf GTI Review.
There is a tiny acrylic clip attached on the windscreen (stretching out from the A pillar. But what for? Thx a lot.

I’ve always preferred the estate but the rear end on that is nice
Seeing you on the Valley Road reminds me of when I test drove a couple of BMWs from the dealership up there in 1983. The 735iA, which was way out of my price range and a nice red 323iA Special Equipment which they lent me for the whole day! Recaro seats and all! I took my mum out for a spin and the seats were a struggle for her to get in and out of. My bank manager would have been happy to lend me the 7 grand (it was used, not new) but I decided against it. Never mind, eh! I was born in High Wycombe BTW, and Hughenden Park was one of my favourite places to play. I don't know where all those houses came from, it was nearly all fields in my day... 🤪
