  • This is the first leg in our Bahama's 2018 Island hopping adventure. We depart Aurora, IL (ARR) on our way to Ft. Pierce, FL (FPR). FPR is our staging airport in and out of the country. Hurricane Michael had just made landfall and was in the Georgia/South Carolina area. We had to stay west (behind) the storm on our way and plan our fuel stop to miss airports it may have impacted. We decided over Alabama to go to Williston, FL (X60) to top off.
    Williston was a perfect place for us. The people were very nice and friendly (turned out they were fan's of the channel as well). The fuel was cheap and the airport was very well maintained. Thank you guys for a perfect quick stop on our way down to the islands!

    Jammed airspace. I've spoiled myself by flying from Torrance to Nuys than drive, or up & down the coast but I do miss the quiet farmland. I've Gooled the area and the house I was living in is still there. Brings back memories. I appreciate your videos and narrative you give. Look forward to more.

    Was out draining irrigation stuff and my back was killing me, looked at my phone and saw a notice of new video from you. Made me smile and motivated me to finish up. I really hope you two had a great vacation and thanks for taking us along.
    Sleeping copilot...if she is working nights I understand, but otherwise I gotta tell ya, I have driven thousands of miles in the motor home, when the kids were little or now pulling the 5er toy hauler with my "copilot" sound asleep. When the boys were little it wasn't uncommon for me to be the only one awake in the vehicle. I think it is in the DNA or somethin' LOL.
    Either way it speaks to her confidence in your skills as a pilot. That is a pretty dang stout endorsement.
    One question...when setting flaps and dropping gear for landing is it necessary to reset trim as you bring the changes in that impact the wing config to get best control response possible as you bring the airplane down...if so how far down are you changing trim?

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  5 лет назад

      Hey Arch, glad to give you reason to get some chores done! Most controllers work goofy rotating schedules so sleep schedules stay a little unusual. So I cut her some slack on the longer flights. :) The good news about if she sleeps for a while, I get to skip our original fuel stop and press on without permission. Ha ha. Yes, configuration changes in speed, power, flaps and gear will require slight re-trim. It's really not too much in this plane...inch here...half inch there. When you do the gear and flaps 10-15 at the same time, they tend to cancel out each others pitch movement and not much trim is needed.

    Nice job on the video guys. Just curious as to why you always fly VFR? I find IFR easier on trips even on VMC days. Are FLIB airplanes bad for controllers being in the system? I've always assumed it was better to be in the system rather than ask for flight following...

    • @jamess6656
      @jamess6656 5 лет назад

      Steven Sprague The are a few longer trip videos where he flew IFR. I was a little surprised he did not fly IFR on this one after he escaped Chicago Terminal airspace. Making a WAG, he wanted to keep his options open with uncertainty on which airports would have gas.

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  5 лет назад

      Steven, yet again James nailed it. I generally prefer IFR for long flights...less thinking with ATC taking a lot of the responsibility (airspace, etc) but in this case I wasn't sure what we would be doing for a fuel stop and with the great weather on top, we just stayed VFR. There was a lot of power outages and with the increasing tailwind I ended up changing our fuel stop further down the road. You'll see us on the way back fly IFR from Huntsville home with a ceiling of 800 feet on departure. :) In the Nashville video we depart the Chicago are VFR but then pick up an IFR in the air. I do all 3 depending on the situation. Glad you enjoyed the video!

      Glad you liked it Maurice! I tried calling before departing but they were closed. In the air you can call but it's hit or miss if at the little airports if the FBO is listening to the frequency. You'll hear me call Williston Unicom and they tell me they have fuel at the end of this video. You have to be fairly close for their radios to work.

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  5 лет назад +1

      It is a must do. GA is the only way to really experience them I think. As divers, off of here I can give you the information to the house on Andros...you'll see when I get to that day of the series. There is a reef off shore and suppose to be the best diving in the Bahamas. The house comes with a car and a couple kayaks that can anchor to the reef to dive. It's a short walk from the airport.
      Just did VFR for max flexibility. I didn't know where we would be stopping for fuel with the winds/power outages and wasn't sure if any ATC was disrupted on the back side of the Hurricane. On the way back we did end up IFR with an Overcast at 800 departure. I guess I'm about 50/50 on IFR vs VFR depending on mood/weather/mission etc.

    I like how you both use your normal voice and tone and volume when talking on the radio.

  • @skycop56

    Kevin, when Jaymi crawls in back you should notice an increase in airspeed as the center of gravity shifts aft. I did an experiment in my 150 with a 10lb weight on a rope with pulleys and when the weight was back and I had an aft CG, my indicated airspeed increased by about 10 kts. That is because the horizontal stabilizer became a lifting surface instead of exerting its normal downward force to counter the forward CG. Of course, he problem with an aft CG is an unstable airplane which can be dangerous. A spin could be unrecoverable and so could a stall at low airspeed. But in cruise flight I think it is safe. Anyone with more knowledge care to comment?

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  5 лет назад +2

    A landlubber's observation about airplanes: they got fancy dashboards with EVERY parameter monitored...and GPS...and radios and all...but they ain't got no dang heater or AC for the cabin! C'mon, man! Let's get smarter about creature comforts for the value when you're flying a $1.9M machine!

    Really awesome flight, Kevin. “Flying” with you two is like flying with family. Y’all are both so cool. You give us step-by-step information on the flight, but you don’t overdo it with too much info. You two also communicate with each other, just the way loving couples should do, and that’s great to see. I thought it was amazing, when you talked with that ATC controller about a guy y’all had previously worked with. It’s a small world when you find out about friends who have moved on, and you talk with someone a long way away, who knows them. Pretty cool!! Hope you two had a really wonderful time in the Bahamas, had fun, and got a lot of rest. Hope you had a safe flight back home. Looking forward to the next video. @@310Pilot we put the 182 in a hangar. Our 172 was tied down in the shade hangar. Our A&P and IA was in the middle of the annual, and he checked a) the connections before he signed off. I often talk to Eglin controllers. Before Destin got a tower, it was a pain getting in and out. It was non towered and once I went in with 11 planes in the pattern. When you would leave VFR, you had to get clearance from Eglin on the ground, but many times the radios wouldn't pick them up. Awesome videos, I have been subscribed for a while. Being that you both are ATC I do have a genuine question. When you check in with them you always say the altitude you said you would BE at, but not the actual altitude you ARE at. In this video it would be 7,500' but the altimeter is consistently 1-200' higher. I chastise my students about telling ATC wrong altitudes. I get that you were VFR but doesn't your altitude report serve to help ATC positively identify you? Do you guys (ATC) really care? Just curious if its annoying to you guys.

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  5 лет назад

      Glad you enjoy the videos Russell! Don't change what you are telling your students. You are correct and should state present altitude and assigned altitude if assigned and climbing or descending to that altitude. The important part for ATC is that you are within 300 ft of said altitude. That is why you never hear us get questioned by ATC. Still, keep teaching the way you are. :)

    Wow, a pleasant surprise to see you guys stop in at Williston airport, the Williston airport is an old B-25 base, I have good memories of that place with the warbirds and restoration work, my cousin and his stepdad are the ones who put Williston airport back on the map (figure of speech), new asphalt, facilities, hanger, etc., it was pretty run down when they got there, a lot more planes parked there now than when I was there just from see the short clip of when you were pulling up next to the hanger, we had some big birds there like A-26 Invader and T-28 Trojan of course we would have friends with a B-25 Mitchell and T28 Trojan stop in and visit, aside from the town of Williston politics I miss the place. After they did all that work getting funding for new facilities and clearing the land and getting it tamed again after the five - 6 years the town found a loop hole to get out of the 10 -15 yr lease, they wanted to make more money now everything was looking good. Businesses were lined up and ready to come in and invest. ???? I still scratch my head and wonder. O well, life marches on and things happen for a reason, this was back in the latter part of the 80's. Just felt like sharing a little bit of history and insight about the place. The flight school operating out of there now has a youtube channel (MzeroA flight training) operated by Jason Shapperd, he seems like really great guy, good to see not all was lost and the place lives on and has more commerce than ever before.

I say buy a plane...you listed some really cool ones. It all depends on your "normal" mission. If you want to fly at night a lot, over water, low IMC, need to carry a lot then the twin would be my choice. If you don't need to cary much and want to haul butt on relatively low fuel...Lancair (I've always loved the IV-P). Have fun down low counting cows or going to grass strips etc...Carbon Cub!

    I know nothing about flying, just think your videos are calming. Not the controllers constantly yapping but the idea of hopping in a plane and basically going wherever you feel like it. Peacefulness.

      It can be very peaceful and freeing to just hop in the sky and get away from all the hustle and bustle and go somewhere. Glad you enjoy the videos. :) Think you'll enjoy the island hopping coming later in the Bahamas series.

    I lived in the out skirts of Danville IL on rural rt 2 about 3 or so miles south of Henning when I lived there a few years ago. Now I'm in the greater Los Angeles Basin. Lots of fun, lots of traffic. Keep flying safe

      Wow...what a culture change I'm guessing. Small farm town to LA!!! I'm more Danville than L.A. but I know a lot of people love it down there in Southern California. Guessing is the weather/location and not so much the traffic. :) Thanks for watching Gary!
