I don't know if it matters anymore if I say. However, I really think you have the spring backwards. On every PS3 controller that I've taken apart the spring is supposed to rest inside the trigger and on the slanted part of the trigger housing/bracket. From what I can see, it looks like yours is the same. It should be easy to place by hand with little chance of it breaking loose.

Super long-shot, but do you know the dimensions of the metal pins that hold the triggers in place? Diameter and Length?
How do you replace the spring when the bar that goes across the L2 trigger is plastic and cant be removed?
