Found your video a couple of months ago and been meaning to give it a try. Did it today and worked a charm - super quick thanks to your video and clear breakdown. Sincerest thanks!
I've been on covid for 2 days now. I thought of starting the ps3 again play gt5, fight night, fifa. Etc. N the control was jumping kicking on its own.. I did wat u recommended.. omg .. like new!! U save my sanity for 4 more days of isolation!
I accidentally spent 2 hours fixing my controller because I accidentally deconstruction the whole thing and took forever trying to fix it. Your tutorial still worked great and I will hopefully do it correctly in the future 🙏.
Totally works. My problem was pressing on the left stick and for some reason that caused activity on the right stick without moving it. Did a complete cleaning and everything's working fine now. Thanks!
Like many of the comments state, this really worked and fixed my favorite PS3 controller. I ended up using a stack of sticky notes and it worked fine. Thanks so much for this video it’s really hard to find genuine PS3 controllers these days!!
Fantastic guide, and great explanation of what the issue is. My DS3 just went berserk with phantom button presses and I was able to fix it easily after watching. Thank you!
Hi, thank you for the great tip on fixing this particular problem.. which battery do you purchase when replacing them on this particular controller thank you
Here in 2023. Bought a controller at a local pawn shop today that had this issue. I didn’t have any foam to fix it, so I just cut a piece off a small stack of sticky notes. Controller works perfectly now.
My issue is with the R1 button working on its own, could that also be the tape/foam issue? Great video by the way, so much is thrown away today, the skills of DIY repairs are few and far between.😀
I've repaired my two controllers with a thin piece of cardboard from a mountain dew box on top of the foam. I bought another controller today from a local retro game store and it was absolutely having a seizure when I turned it on. Again, a piece of cardboard fixed the issue.
I bought a lot of PS3 controllers to have a go at fixing. They all have the same issue when plugged in to gamepad tester. D-Pad and L2/R2 constantly pressed [50% pressed]. I've cleaned everything. Not sure foam will fix them but it's worth a try.
@@PghGameFix I actually tried two other gamepad testers online and 3 out of 4 controllers were fine which is good, but it leaves me with a little bit of doubt. The fourth one has some sporadic presses on the right side so I've order some neoprene and hopefully that'll do it.
The symptoms with mine are quite varied. Sometimes L1 is stuck on. Sometimes if I wiggle the sticks, the d-pad activates. If I press the d-pad normally I get nothing out of it. LT is always on just a smidge. I've take it apart multiple times, cleaned the entire ribbon. Every time I put it back together, the issues I have change a little, but the d-pad and L1 are always unresponsive. Think I might try a new ribbon at this point. My concern is it's the board but who knows...
I watched this guide after I did the same thing to my controller and all I did was add a couple layers of paper. It’s crazy how Sony messed up on the design of the ps3 controller
It takes 5 seconds to use a new shipping label and stick the pad on the adhesive side, tear and stick several times. Then cut it flush around the pad. Masking tape would also have the same result.
This unfortunately didn’t work after 3 long hours of not being able to get the small triggers on, as after getting one part on resulted in all parts falling off. After many attempts I managed to get that sorted but the two main parts of the controller do not go together. Putting too much pressure on them causes the triggers to detach again, this makes multiple attempts occur. I would love to be helped because after research there are no controllers that are DualShock that are less than £50, this is quite expensive and I wish I could fix it for free, thank you!
The analog sticks keep going up on mine, but is fine on the games but the ps button functions but not properly for example if I wanna long press to turn off it won’t do it… and it was working fine I had to fix the trigger buttons, it is super frustrating
Yo lo que hago es pegar los contactos con cinta adhesiva, me aseguro así que no se mueva, y también le pongo cinta adhesiva a la pieza acolchada negra para que ocupe más.
Could you make a tutorial about fixing PS3 controller which buttons sometimes doesn't work unless pressing it fully. I've tried everything, nothing helps. I've added some layer to the bottom of the film, cleaned all over film and buttons.. nothing helps
Something’s wrong with my ps3 controller the problem is that something I press activates triangle or R1 due to the couple of times the controller been dropped but the controller is really in good condition, I just don’t know how to fix it
My ps3 controller has the phantom ghost in it as well, but, my circuit board is half the size and doesn't have that black foam, i did find something that is black, but, it's different, anyway, I did put something under it, but, it didn't help
Hello! I have a ps3 controller that i got for 2nd hand and ive been playing the old cod games and noticed that the when i press L3 it registers the button for the D pad… any suggestions? Thanks
When cleaning the membrain/ribbon, what happens if you clean it using a standard or normal alcohol? would it stop breaking? and can you also use regular sticker paper for the foam?
Is it possible to just buy that foam piece off of ebay or Amazon? I might try this but I'm not really mechanical savy i never disassembled a controller before.
Love ncaa 14 but I was being driven insane by my runners hurdling or pitching the ball onto the ground on every carry. Had a small strip of adhesive foam lying around, worked flawlessly. Excellent instructions, controller is like new now
Did it step by step, was extra careful and succeed reassembling but now when its time to start the controller it isn't coming on,just showing the charging lights
do you have any tips on how to remove stripped screws on these controllers? I'm trying to fix it like you did, but I just can't remove that particular screw.
You can get a tool kit for this. Blue tac can help too. If they're not too far gone yet, then make sure you have a decent screwdriver with the biggest size end that will fit into the screw and press it in really hard while very carefully and slowly turning it(while keeping the force pressing down). Once you get it loose you can release some of the pressure. I tend to try and unscrew the rest of it by hand at this point.
You sir are very helpful! Did this on my original ps3 controller brought in 2012 and it worked! Big thanks because of this video you made I can play the games I played in my childhood. Thanks
Please help. I have a another controller that also have a faulty R2 button (random presses) and despite of cleaning the controller motherboard and even changing the conductive film it's still have the same issue.
If you replaced the ribbon, and made sure that the foam is still good... and it's only that one button having issues... there could be a problem with the main board itself.
Actually worked. Although i used a rubber piece, very thick in addition to the foam. It worked only if i pressed it super hard with my hand when testing, so i also added another rubber piece in the back, glued on top of the foam that comes to serve that same purpose: to press the circuitboard. It is getting a lot of pressure now, but works a charm. Thank you!
Any thin foam table will work. 1mm to 1,5mm. I looked on Amazon, and all the packs are on the expensive side, and you only need a small amount. I'm sure you can find something at a local store
Hello friend. Great video! I am desperately looking for an answer to something I came across while refurbishing my own ps3 controller. While disassembling a "tri wing" peice came out and I cannot figure out where it goes. I'm assuming the D pad or button pad but I don't understand the orientation. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!
Hey great video! Mine was working fine until the battery died. I bought another one which was better but slightly bigger, then the "ghost" inputs started on the D pad, ahhhh! Can this fix that or should I order the correct one?
oh just remove the R1/2 L1/2 he says, as it peels the board out of the button making it difficult to put it back together to the point I'd rather just throw the thing in the garbage.

Random button presses ONLY happens when I click in the left stick. But since I’m clicking the stick down I obviously put pressure on the controller probably disconnecting the ribbon since the foam isn’t as thick anymore to hold it in place when I put pressure on the left stick. My guess is that it’s the problem you described in the video… What do you think?
