- I've had some of these neat little USB flashlight modules for a while, and since people always ask where I got them I thought I'd make a video and provide a link.
I also show how to modify them to the colour or effect of your choice.
Here's the eBay search link. Target price is between $1 to $3.

If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of RUclips's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty. Наука
Your videos are powerfully benign things. Even when they stray outside of my comprehension zone, they remain relaxing and reassuring. I think they may venture into the realm of ASMR videos. Certainly I'm not the first viewer to say that.
He has a radio voice IMO.
@3:25, I think that "thread lock" is actually a little dab of heat-sink paste, intended to conduct heat to the outer case. The grit in the paste does bite into aluminum and act as a thread lock.
“That’s almost looking quite goodish, I think.“
Brilliant!
I rather like the self deprecating way you heckle yourself and your abilities. This from one who has never been able to hold the soldering iron, solder and component simultaneously! I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous like you ☺️
Clive we never get bored of your ramblings lol keep the good work up
"flushed with success should I be reckless?" yknow what they say, when you succeed first time, push your luck
I really hope rgb LEDs never go out of style. They are my favorite little novelty items, made 14 of the cloud lights for family (diffused slow rgb LEDs swapped in and added a fusible resistor) and I hope to use them more often
I got the alu ones while ago when I first saw them on this here channel :-) so Thanks Clive...
The hack I did was to turn the USB connector around so it fits in-line with the bank like the pink one does (ergonomics lol) and use as a camping flash light etc.
I noticed that as well, it's a bit annoying isn't it? (OCD Rules OK!!)
@@stepheneyles2198 Yep
You should draw concentric rectangles on your workbench so that when you zoom in you can know that you're staying inside the shot rather than guessing. you're usually pretty good about it but drawing the rectangles would take the guesswork out.
@6 6 I think hes got 2 little marks on the top left and right of the screen, not sure if its random or if its his markers for the cam
@6 6 He still wanders too much. I don't have a problem with it. He seems to worry about it more than we do, I think. The concentric rectangles would be easier to keep track of. If the object is inside the rectangle, then it's in the shot.
That's what the "viewfinder" is for on the camera.
That's far too organised for our Clive LOL!
Ever notice , that good ideas are good ideas, only if the right people think, that they are good ideas?
I've had one of these aluminium USB flashlight adapters, and it's been brilliant! Great video presentation - many thanks Clive.
Cheers, I was looking for these usb lights last week and couldn't find them! A very timely video. Thanks.
Bob Ross of electronics.
I was actually just about to write this! I get so frustrated when soldering projects don't go quite right, but this dude is just so fucking calm the whole way through...
Happy little L.E.D.s,,,you can make them any color you want!
Wow you're right, never would have put that together.
Never would have made the connection. But oh my God you are right.
I was just about to make the same comment! Calm competence spreading the joy of electronics discovery.
Get out of my workshop! I was just trying to pull one of these apart last night! I only bought it a few years back when you demonstrated them. Great vid as always.
I really like your channel. You present things with a very pleasant demeanor and sense of humour. I enjoy working with electronics as a hobby, and watching your channel is a treat.
I enjoy watching you take things apart and putting them back together, Keep it up brother!
Thank you so much for this. I was able to order several of these using the link you provided (after searching using other keywords and coming up with nothing). These are so handy for my camping / storm chasing work here in the states. Nice video too - Keep up the good work!
Clive we could never “get bored”
Another great video thank you.
The RGB looks really psychedelic while the facility lights are turned off. Love this ♥️🎆
Bang Good were selling these (or a close equivalent) some time back. They also sold a "12v rechargeable" variant (designed for charging via a standard car cigarette lighter port). These have turned out to be rather more reliable than usual (ours have lasted years now!)
Rechargeable LEDs? Never heard of them!
for a 12v rechargeable torch you can't go far wrong wit the nebo torch, i have a few and they live in the cigarette socket to charge.
USB Flashlight Secrets Revealed! Part II: Warm White Disco Boogaloo!
... I'm getting tired ...
Great episode. Love this stuff. Thanks, Clive!
Nice vid, of a nice product. It's amazing how many people don't know about fitting these 1 watt LED lights to power banks. I prefer the lights with the little switch on them, you can leave them in the power bank switched off. I agree the aluminium machined lights are more attractive.
Big Clive always makes me feel good about my less-than-perfect soldering skills.
Michael Steeves if you like that, go and find GreatScott's videos on SMD soldering. Atrocious.
I always find your videos both entertaining and very helpful to fall asleep.
One more thing to add to my junk drawer thanks to Big Clive. Surprising how often I use these bits though!
A neat little led and very practical. Thanks Glen
I like the LEDs that are on a PCB with the USB contacts as traces. I got them 5x for 1$ a couple years ago and they've been working great.
Hi Clive. I use those 3W led`s at 3W. I solder a thick guitar string on the back, and that string goes 2x in my circuit board for pasive cooling. With that they work great, without they cook themself. I make outdoor nightlamps with them, and led panels for better lighting for filming my youtube video`s. I think around 2.3Ohm for that color. Also works great with potmeters. Can go from very minimal light to extreme bright. I love them. Greetings
Thanks for introducing me to the Ruideng. Very awesome usb meter!
Nice. I enjoy your videos. Never tedious. Thanks.
The power of BigClive. The ebay item I clicked on had 38 sold in last hour. That was on ebay U.K and at £1.43. Next person will see 41 sold in last hour.
notice how the advert always says "4 available" too , they limit you to buying 4 in one go it seems.
@@amojak You can get around that limit by soldering two lengths of copper wire together, to form a cross, and hold it up to the screen as you click "buy it now". But you have to chant "The power of Big Clive compels you" in the same voice as the priest in The Exorcist used.
ruclips.net/video/lpyg94OzHK0/видео.html
Only 4 days later, and my second link offers LED color options: soft white, white, and green. Soft white is cheaper. I bet those were the LEDs that they already had with the right form factor. I expect more colors in a few days.
That was a very nice video. Like the rambeling and testing bit.
....The bigger the gob, the better the job.
i am more impressed by the usb multi meter thing than the led plug-ins
Nice to see a more subtle use of the Vice of Knowledge for a change Clive. :-)
I have one of these USB lights and I'm quite happy with it.
It is absolutely terrifying (and amazing) how you get so close with your soldering iron to your fingers, even going as far as soldering while holding the item. After getting badly burnt I'm kinda scared of soldering and when I have to (when wagos are too big) I handle the task like I'm defusing a live nuke. Good video
Try some spirits to calm your nerves ... also helps with the pain after :-D
I bought a load of 1W LEDs in various colours last year, my favoured "white" LED is the 4000-4500k ones, nice daylight white... :)
Ok I'm really happy found this channel
Well Done Krickey!!
Very nice :) Now I'm wondering if you found any more neon pink death dealing items? More electrode boilers and other fun things please!
Lenses like that are called TIR lenses. They are pretty cool and tend to be more efficient than a reflector.
Best ASMR channel ever
It should be noted that the LED base pad should be soldered to the aluminium board for better heat transfer. A clothing iron turned upside down on max heat works great as a heated plate. Its the recommended way to solder with bottom heat because the lens on top of those LED tend to get damaged easiy. A friend of mine (cough, cough) had to replace a few LEDs because he only watched the tip of his iron.
At 19:23 one of the LEDs on the table joined the blinking without being powered. A camera quirk or is the blinking blue exciting the phosphor?
Yes, the blue light does excite the phosphor. Blue or UV is quite effective for that.
White LEDs are esentially blue LED chips with a phosphor on top. The phosphor doesn't care which direction the blue light is coming from ;)
To my eye the LED on the table seems to be reflecting the different colors of the strobing light. If it was the phosphorus being excited by the blue light then it would emit a single color. I may be wrong, but it looked like different colors to me.
First saw that monkeying around with a UV flashlight. All my A19 had pink or purple glow.
Clive, Multimode units are now available too. They are green in colour with a small red tactile switch on the side. £2.20
Great video clive
LOL, Oh Boy a TOY .... Going to order a few. Always order twice what you want. Everyone else want one when they see them.
Haven't you done these before? It was certainly a video by someone that prompted me to buy some, ages ago.
I've got half a dozen or so converted with various red/green/UV/IR leds. 👍
I'll have to check. I have done multiple videos on the same thing before. The RGB flash twist is new though.
Pretty sure he has as I have 5 of them.
Great as usual.. thanks. Bought one ))
Funny story, I bought a few rolls of solder a while ago, and then changed my soldering iron as well. For the longest time, I always wondered if the iron's settings aren't accurate because I have to turn it up higher. It didn't matter much because I just had to make sure I turned it up high enough to solder comfortably. I was so sure I bought leaded solder that I didn't even check. It's not until recently that I was low on solder and decided to reorder some more. That's when I learned that I have been using lead-free solder for the past two years or so. It's now rectified. Oops.
Some fine examples of USB Superposition in this video :)
Thanks Clive. I guess we both need to get some tweezers for our irons. I have been aiming to get some but there are always other things that I need more. I have never tried to solder like you do. I will try it one of these days and see if I burn myself. lol
You can get ceramic tipped tweezers on eBay (for a dollar or two) that allow you to place components without soldering the tweezers.
Come on man, you know what I'm talking about. And they are much more than a dollar or two...
Back in 2005 as the original Luxeons where still around, there where two different wattages in that case-style 1W and 5W(wich had twice the voltage of the 1W and about 800mA)
Nice mod. One could make a portable disco with those RGB lights, some power banks and a DIY boombox. 😁
A solder sucker would be extremely useful.
I did this too but I put solder instead of heatpaste in the middle. Works fine as well.
the 99c ebay light i saw also had 99c shipping, so was almost $2 total.
Cheapest option i found for these was $1.69 (w' free shipping).
happy new year clive 😉😎
Clive do you remember the old programme “Mork and Mindy”
The effect of the colour changing led is exactly like when Mork would communicate with Orson.
I have a 3 watt 365nm led that I will now swap into the turned aluminum flashlight module.I will see if the plastic lens will pass UV.
Lovely stuff
Look like about 6x3mm, so 2512 resistors Clive, not too unusual a size. At a glance, RS offers approx 1800 resistors at that size, some at a meaty 6w power rating!
Came here to say this, as the package was immediately recognisable as 2512 - they're quite distinct! (I'm a Patreon supporter, but I'm behind on videos so I only got around to watching this when it was public >.>) I literally just searched AliExpress for "2512" and got nothing but results for those resistors, although you'll find that most of the results will be for values in the sub-1Ω range, as of course those resistors are commonly used as current-sense resistors, but there are plenty of listings for higher values if you search around enough :) And yes, they're typically rated 1 Watt (the generic ones listed on AliExpress, at least - I've actually just found *16W* 2512s on Digikey - with sufficient heat-sinking to the board, of course!), and IMO they're a bit expensive to buy from "western" distributors if you want any real quantity of them: I use 0Ω 2512s as large jumpers to jump over up to about 5 tracks in my home-etched single-sided PCBs (I use 0805/1206 for smaller jumps, of course), so I wanted to buy several hundred of them, which gets very slightly expensive for parts that are usually cheap enough to be effectively free - e.g. almost £20 for 500 of them... So I'd recommend somewhere like LCSC.com (sister company of JLCPCB, that sells tons of Chinese components as well as Western components, and is often the only place I've found to buy some Chinese parts!), where I can get 500x 0Ω 2512s for £7 :)
New subscriber here. Great videos, thanks!
you made the right choice, i've got to the point where i even sent clive a buck to buy something on ebay for $0.99 to support his habbits!
Clive is amassing so many power banks and solar panels, its just a matter of time before he attempts to power his house lol
Had to order 3 of these just to have around. Now I have a practical use for these cheap ass power banks. Odd, just last night I was looking at buying a rechargeable flashlight on amazon. Now that I am an old fuck, I find myself always using a flashlight at my desk when I'm working on stuff. Hope these give off enough light to be useful. If not I'll modify them for other purposes.
Bought one for 1.79 usd and there's hope it will arrive in January. 3W led driven very "Lightly" if I may say so...
I have a few of those 1w WHITE bead leds, was cobbling some together the other night to make a light in a cupboard, what i found odd was the voltage drop was only about 2.8v not my expected 3.3v, - you can also drive them upto about 80-90ma without any noticeable heat and plenty of light
At lower current the forward voltage can go right down to about 2.5V.
Just ordered 10 from AliExpress Clive. 👍🏻
Great video
You need a link on the other led replacements to mod a different colour like uv and green or blue
Impressive how you can wait for solder joints too cool down without blowing on them
Take a look at those "Cree XML T6" or XM L2 flashlights, they are quite impressive. Specially those in 30-50$ range
You can get xml t6 flashlights for £5 most aren't even worth £2.
Seeing him using the soldering tip right by his fingers is giving me the willies! Otherwise, great little hack~
You're right about RUclips changing notification options. I'm forever resetting "occasional" to "every" notification.
Clive, that resistor looks like a 2512 size part. I use them in my designs. Easy to get 1W versions, 2W are obtainable too, and if you can restrict source to one manufacturer then you can get them in 3W rating. I can get you some of you need them. PM me.
I just ordered some from eBay, thanks. The keyword was 2512.
Clive, Notifications on RUclips were disabled due to their added feature of the "bell" a little bell icon appears beside the "subscribed" box that shows once you subscribe. Your audience has to click that bell and enable notifications in order for them to receive them.
Hey, clive! So I just recently found your videos and I have binge-watched most of them in the last week or so. I've been programming for about 6 years and you've inspired me to try to get into electrical engineering. I was wondering if you had any advice for where to begin. Or if you knew cheap places to get kits that are fairly easy to understand. Thanks! Your videos are great!
If you search on eBay for flashing led kit suite you will find some very cheap flasher kits that are fun to build.
Wow! Looks like an exploding galaxy or something similarly sci-fi.
Nice supernova visualizer you've made by accident!
Flashlight that doesn't flash, which would be called stroboscope in dutch, torch that's not a paraffin burning stick dutch call fakkel. The dutch word is much more sensible: zaklamp, pocketlight, a light you can put in your pocket and implies portability. Fun stuff!
Josha Beukema that is why a speedlight is used to flash and a strobist uses speedlights.
Stick that in your ear, it looks like Uhura's Communications earpiece!
I’d love to see a video on how bright can you make one to go like 1-2amp
i so wish you would do a temperature test on this without the case
This reminded me of me trying to replace the rear glass panel of my phone after I cracked it. During the replacement process I managed to damage one of the LEDs on my phone's camera flash and now it's blue.
They usually have a blue chip to stimulate the phosphor. So the phosphors may have been knocked off or damaged. (They usually look yellow.)
The RGB flasher output stays 'centered' because the lens, so close to the LED, refracts even slightly off center light to reflect off the inside of the lens surface (look up 'optics: critical angle' if you wanna get really geeky). The slight hollow in the center close to the LED bends the light toward the large outer 'bell' of the lens, which acts like a reflector. I'm guessing the aluminum shell reflects even more stray light back toward the lens, helping to smooth the light distribution, but I'd have to test it to be sure how much it really matters.
Hi Clive had you ever thought of doing a big long term project like building an electric vehicle?
Sooo. Did you put any thermal paste on the back of the pcb to better transfer heat to the case now ?
Did i overlook that ?
Nice infos, but i really really really dont need another LED light...
Still need to build something with 3x warm white 3W / 15V COB LEDs i got for no good reason at all. :-)
Kewl. Thank Big Clive.
Never Bored!
Every time you do a video involving these Ruideng USB testers, they got quickly out of stock at Bang*good. :-/
Hah must be true. I check for them when I'm reminded (by clive) and they're always out of stock.
Get them from the factory store on aliexpress, you get the latest versions as well
They have them on AliExpress and Ebay as well. Search for UM34/UM34C or, for the other ones; UM24 or UM25. (Add the C at the end for the bluetooth version)
The electronic version of the Delia effect
Cut the resistance of the current limiting resistor and kick up the current flow, and/or get a XM-L 16mm star and really pump up the current!
Nice!!
you should do a video with you just hitting things with a hammer and seeing what survives and can be used
Hammer,hammer,hammer!
Clive calls them X-Ray's
When are you going to open up one of those cam girl toys?
Lovense
i promise its just a simple microcontroller and a bt transceiver . a shitty battery and a vibrator. it will be very underwhelming
@@TheTimmy4745 Yeah, those vibrators are shit. Clive should borrow an ET312 from someone and tear it down on video.
@@cebruthius Clive did something like this already (just the shitty chinese version):
ruclips.net/video/ClSch3zLC0k/видео.html
cebruthius Google MK312-BT for an open source (hardware and software) version of the ET312
A lot of the cheap LED's are batches that failed quality control in some way. Getting ones where just the polarity is reversed is the best case scenario.
Bought a couple --- turned up today --- Centre of the Beam is Blue ?!?!
New song idea!!! Clive remixing Bob Ross’s happy little trees to happy little LEDs
I wrapped a couple of turns of micropore medical tape round mine to cover the sharp edges on the outside.
Can you recommend some other good soldering kits like the 7 segment led clock with the acrylic case that you did a while back? I want to practice some soldering but like to have little gadgets, etc to display after. Thanks and love the videos.
If you search ebay for the keywords led suites kits you should find a wide range of cheap kits from China.
Bonne video 👍🇫🇷
You could always use a cheap USB hub and add your multiple LEDs for extra visible load...
