The Unique Gawda Tribe of Goa

- The Gawdas are the original inhabitants of Goa. Unfortunately, there isn’t any written proof of where they came from although they have been linked to the Gowda community from Bengal as they seem to have similar customs and traditions. It is also believed that they took their name from the word ‘Gaon’ which means village in Sanskrit. Gowdas/ Gawdas practice Hinduism but do not seem to have any hierarchical order and do not marry outside their community. In fact, they even allow for cross-cousin marriages between paternal and maternal cousins. Women play a major role in economic, social and political activities but cannot take part in any religious rituals, not even related to the deity worshipped in the household. These tribes practice Hindu religion and worship Lord Mallikarjun, a form of Lord Shiva.
Primarily engaged in agriculture, they were originally nature worshippers, but took to Hindu practices over the past millennium. A section of the Gawda population in several villages of South Goa got converted to Catholicism around the 17th century during Portuguese rule.
The Gowda tribe is considered progressive because of distinct characteristics like Women Empowerment and Religious Harmony.

What is the significance of cremation in Hinduism
Hindus place little value on the body itself. They see the body as a prison for the soul, one that generates attachments and desires that prevent forward progress towards freedom. Therefore, in Hindu funerals, the role of cremation is to sever the ties of the soul to the body that it is leaving, freeing it to move toward mukti Or nirvana!
This is quiet interesting.... I did not know that Hinduism emphasizes in subduing the BODY, I thought it was a Christian concept.
It is so fascinating how all religions boil down to the same core values!
