  • A unique chapter in the study of Goan culture is the auspicious and vibrant Zagor dance by the Goan Gawda tribe. This folk theatrical performance can be defined as a narration of Gawda culture, mythology, and history which has been passed on from generation to generation orally. The word Zagor translates to keeping a night vigil to please the almighty, the protector of the village nature goddess.
A lamp known as Zalmi is lit at the house of tribals and then the performers proceed towards the sacred place of performance called Maand. This dance is usually performed late at night and continues till the next morning and it has no continuous plot or narrative. The chorus performers equipped with folk instruments are called Maedelli.
The performance begins with a devotional song called Naman. This song is to seek blessings from the nature goddess and the protector of Maand to accept their offering of the Zagor performance as their yearly remembrance. Then, the torchlight procession called ‘suari’ begins where torches are created using dry palm leaves and carried by men performers.
