The sheer amount of variety in his play is unbelievable. He's not just technically brilliant but a fantastic improviser and a very intelligent footballer. He is such a creative force and a very expressive person, like an artist whose canvas happens to be a pitch. He plays every game like it was the first time he'd discovered football, like a child will do, making up tricks and flicks as he goes along. For me, Picasso, Mozart, Einstein, Dostoevsky, Ali and not footballers are the closest group of people in mindset that are comparable to him.
I agree, for me he is an artist in the real true sense and football is his instrument. Outside the pitch he was a simple and kind hearted person as well as a party animal, and his unbearable level of fame must have led him to be quite unbalanced. But both in and outside the pitch he was able to really convey a feeling, his passion. With barely any formal education he also expressed himself in some very memorable phrases that come from the heart (and wit). Comparisons are not nice, but while Pelé was the better Athlete, to me, Maradona was the Artist.
His dribbling ability is definitely superb, but the vision of Maradona will never be matched by anyone. He had unlimited passing range alongside extraordinary creativity, some legends scored more goals, but Diego is unique when it comes to playmaking.
