    I review the new Xtool D9 Pro, which is the upgraded version of the D7, D8/A80 line of diagnostic scan tools. This scanner comes in two flavors, The D9, and the D9 Pro. (I will list the differences between the two models near the bottom of this video description) This is a brand new model for 2022 and it's the first Xtool OBDII scanner to feature their new module topology mapping software. The D9 is ready for the future, too.... it's compatible with the newer DoIP and CAN FD protocols. It has full bidirectional control, with 35+ special functions including ABS brake bleed. It's also capable of ECU coding and ECU programming. (on only certain makes of vehicles) The BEST PART is the initial purchase price includes THREE YEARS of free software and make/model updates. Most high end scan tools like this typically only include one year of free updates. A full list of tech specs is included within the video.
    If you're looking for a very powerful high end scan tool that is somewhat future proof, be sure to put this one on your list of considerations. With it's CAN FD and DoIP capabilities, and 3 year of free updates, this scan tool is ready for just about any vehicle that will hit the road within the near future.
    Please be sure to post any questions or comments that you may have.
    The difference between the D9, and the D9 Pro is:
    * D9 Pro supports ECU CODING for BMW / VW / AUDI / Škoda / BENZ…. The D9 only supports the VW / AUDI / Škoda.
    * D9 Pro supports ECU PROGRAMMING for BMW/ VW / AUDI / Škoda / BENZ / FORD (Offline) / MAZDA (Offline)…. the D9 does not.
    Both of them come with the NON-OBD2 connector Kit
    The update fee for the D9 is $258, and the update fee for the D9 Pro is $358 after the 3 years of free updates.

      @@mumberealberto1090 This is an OBD2 scan tool. This tool (and any other OBD2) will work on any vehicle sold in north America from 1996 or after... Pre 1996 vehicles are considered OBD1 and this tools does come with some adapters that will allow you to physically connect to some of those vehicles but I've personally never tried this tool on anything from1995 or older. Besides, anything from the OBD1 years is very primitive compared to today's cars. Don't expect to plug into a 1991 (for example) Buick and expect to bidirectionally control anything, and don't expect much for live data pids, either. Those old cars are NOT the same as our newer, more modern OBD2 vehicles. I hope this helps.

    Next time you connect to a Chrysler or jeep can you see if it has a custom tire size option, not just the factory tire size but a custom that lets you enter a circumference. I did a review of the Launch x431 V+ and it has that feature, I have not found another scanner that will allow that.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Год назад +3

      Just last week I was plugged into a 2015 Ram 1500 pickup with my TOPDON Phoenix Light 2 and that scan tool allowed me to enter a specific Tire circumference in millimeters. However, either I calculated the wrong circumference, or the computer in the RAM didn't like that number for some reason and it caused all sorts of weird things to happen. It's set some "implausible" codes in the ABS module and it even disabled the electronic power steering for some reason. Lol. The only way to fix it was to do a complete reset on the ECM. Weird. I will check to see if the D9 has that ability next time I am plugged into a Chrysler. Thanks for the question.

    I own the D9S PRO
    The only issue i have is i wish the DB15 cable from the vci to the data link connector was longer. Its about 2 ft long and i always liked to set the vci on the dash pad out of the way. Not hanging by my feet. I believe it also gets a better signal to the unit if your outside the vehicle doing bidirectional tests.

      @SlipFitGarage  6 месяцев назад

      I agree about the cable length. When did you buy your D9 Pro? When I first received my D9 Pro I noticed the same thing, the cable was a bit too short. I told my contact at XTOOL about it and they said thanks for the feedback and then told me future D9 Pro scan tools would be manufactured/sold with longer cables. I am wondering if you received an early version with a short cable, (like mine) or if maybe they never made the change and continue to sell the D9 pro scan tool kits with short cables?

    What's the difference between the D9 and D9PRO? I am looking for a scan tool for a 2016 Sequoia. One feature I would like it to have is to disable the horn every time the doors are locked/unlocked. Can the D9 have that capability? If not, does the D8 have it?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Год назад +2

      I typed this reply once before but somehow it disappeared. Here it goes again:
      It's not really if the scan tool has the ability to turn your horn off, it's more about did the vehicle manufacturer program that feature with the ability to be turned off in the first place? If not, there is NOT a scan tool on earth that will be able to turn your horn off. (if Toyota supplied that option, then disregard the rest of this reply) This is true with EVERYTHING on your scan tool. Not just toggling options on/off. For example: If a Tech wants to run an injector balance test on a specific vehicle, if the computer in that vehicle was not programmed from the factory to run an injector balance test, then it is not possible for that technician to run that test.... and that option most likely won't even appear on the screen of the scan tool. Think of a scan tool as a window that allows you to look into your vehicles computer. If you can't see a feature/function, then it doesn't exist in the first place.... If it doesn't exist, then it's not possible. However, with that said..... cheaper scan tool block some of that "view" through the window. As you pay more for a scan tool, that "view" through the window becomes clearer and clearer. But even with the most expensive scan tool on earth, with the best view possible into your vehicles computer, the function you're looking for needs to already exist in the vehicles computer or it's not possible. For example: I have a 2022 KIA and I HATE the daytime running lights. The dealer told me even their dealer software doesn't allow them to turn the daytime running lights off. I own a bunch of scan tools and none of them allow me to turn those light off. If it can't be done, it can't be done. The difference between the D9 and D9 Pro will not allow you to turn your horn off. The D9 Pro has some programming capability that the D9 does not have. (It's limited) It's only certain makes and models and I do not believe Toyota is one of them. Thanks for the question.

    Hey, nice video. Trying to decide between one of these and a Launch X431 V+ PRO. The XTool seems to have better functionality but the Launch has good graphing of live data when you want to look at multiple PIDs on a road test. You can see lots of different graphs on the same screen, merge multiple PID graphs, etc. Not sure how the XTool would do while trying to look at lots of data on a road test... But my main question is about the DOIP/CANFD. Does this tool come with the adapters for that? Or are those extra accessories?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  8 месяцев назад +1

      Keep in mind this video was made about a year and a half ago. There have been MANY improvement updates across the XTOOL family of scan tools, including this D9 Pro since this video was recorded. I don't have the D9 in my possession right now so I can't say for sure but they improved live data graphing on the D8 to show up to 8 live data pids at the same time (if I'm not mistaken) and it might even be more by now. And if the D8 graphing was improved, then the D9 was absolutely improved, too. When I first read received the D9 I really didn't know much about DOIP and I assumed the RJ45 port on the top of the tool was for plugging into a DOIP vehicle. (Diagnostic Over Internet Protocol) It made sense to me that DOIP would use a typical Ethernet cable. Since this video, I have tested many other scan tools that do not have the RJ45 port yet they are all DOIP compatible now and there is nothing different about the OBDII connector. (DLC) So, apparently, there is no adapter for CANFD/DOIP. And if there is, then I haven't seen one yet, regardless of scan tool brand or model. Thanks for the question.

    • @eurbanautotech
      @eurbanautotech 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@SlipFitGarage Ya, I figured that out about the DoIP/CANFD after doing a bit more reading. I have an Autel MS906bt and you have to get separate adapters for both DoIP and CANFD. The DoIP one was relatively cheap but the CANFD one was near $200!. I'm pretty sure I will get the XTool over the Launch. Cheaper price, 3 years of subscription vs 2 years, a little faster operation over all it seems. It kinda seems like the XTool can't do FCA AutoAuth which sucks. The Launch does support AutoAuth and it seems to have a much faster sample rate for Ford power balance tests. I work on a lot of Fords and use that test a lot so that's a bummer but the XTool's still a MUCH faster sample rate than my Autel for that test. Wish I could get both! Haha. Sure would suck trying to make these decisions without being able to see them in action on RUclips videos. Thanks again! I gave ya a sub!

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@eurbanautotech Are those adapters that you talk about for your MS906BT because that tool was built before CANFD and DOIP protocol was built into the scan tool.... like they are nowadays? All the newer modern scan tools say they are CANFD and DOIP compatible with no mention of adapters anywhere. Also, I don't work directly for Xtool so I can't say with 100% certainty but I do suspect AutoAuth will be available soon on XTOOL scan tools. I have no official inside information but I just have a feeling, if you know what I mean. And if/when AutoAuth does become available on XTOOL, that will just be an over the air update and it will be on the scan tool. Thanks for the sub, and thanks for the question/comments. 🙂

    • @eurbanautotech
      @eurbanautotech 8 месяцев назад

      @@SlipFitGarage Ya, I guess Autel wasn't able to support those protocols with just a software update. I tried installing the shop tool which was a Snap-on product on a DoIP Range Rover (2020 I think..?) and it also said it needed an extra adapter as well. I don't know why Autel needs an extra piece of hardware for CANFD as the adapter is just a standard male 16pin DLC plug on one end and female 16 pin on the other... As far as AutoAuth goes I heard that TopDon/KingBolen/ThinkTool don't support it because they license the software from Launch and didn't pay for that..? Some kinda licensing disagreement. I'm not sure if XTool is also based off Launch software or not. Would be AWESOME if they do end up supporting it but either way I'm looking to pick up the XTool!

      The only other "thing" that I can think of specifically for GM vehicles is a real, used GM Tech 2 device, or a knock-off Tech 2 device. I have no experience with either one of these tools that I just mentioned but you only asked if I "KNEW" of anything else. I hear they are excellent if you work on a lot of GM vehicles. And yes, it would be nice to see an XTOOL combined with Forescan but I highly doubt we'll ever see it. First of all, the two companies are competitors so I doubt they would ever work "together" on anything and second, Forscan is basically Ford and Mazda scan tool software that can be easily used on a laptop computer without having to buy a scan tool..... so that would defeat the purpose of installing the software on a scan tool. lol. Yes, I realize Forscan is a bit more than just a scan tool with it's programming and customization capabilities but I still doubt we'll ever see their software on a dedicated scan tool. A standard laptop computer has WAAAAAAAY more capabilities than ANY scan tool ever made so putting Foresecan on a dedicated scan tool would be a step backwards for the company..... in my opinion, anyway. Thanks for the comment/question.

      I just looked at the email that I received from XTOOL about the D7 update and apparently the D7 now has the same bidirectional control functionality as the D8 along with better graphing capabilities (up to 8 data streams) when graphing live data. The D7 now also has vehicle-specific functions, such as Fuel Trim Reset, fuel injector balance, EVAP service bay test, Reset transmission adaptation, etc., which were previously only available on the D8. Really about the only thing that makes the D7 different from the D8 now is the D7 does not have the ECU coding and ECU configuration of the D8, which is very limited and only on a few makes/models anyway. This new update really makes the D7 a MUCH better tool..... and it was good to begin with! Thanks for the Sub!

      Nothing happens to the functions of the scanner after the free update period ends. The scan tool retains full functionality at it's current software level. However, on vehicles that require the scan tool to have a current subscription with a cloud connection, you will not have most bidirectional functions. This is a result of the vehicle requirements and will happen regardless of scan tool brand/model. Blame modern vehicles for that. Once you understand the difference between the different versions of the D9 scan tool, then you can decide which version is right for you. I have never personally used a D9 (or D9 Pro) on a Mazda vehicle but it should work great.... Just like it does every other make and model. I still stand by my original comment when you asked which one "gives the most for the money". My answer today is still the D7. That answer may change in 6 months (for example) to something else but without a crystal ball, I can't predict the future. The D9 is great and has support for DOIP that is coming in the future but that scan tool doesn't fit in the category that you originally asked about ("gives the most for the money") If you want the best XTOOL scan tool, buy the D9..... but depending which model you get (D9 or D9 Pro) it will cost roughly 2.5 to 3.5 times the price of the D7. Both the D7 and D9 will program keys to some extent. Not all keys are programmable without extra hardware.... in which case neither the D7 or the D9 will program those keys by itself. (they would need additional hardware) Please keep in mind, I am not a key expert so if you're looking to program a LOT of keys be sure to do a bunch of research before buying anything.I hope this helps. • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Год назад +1

      You should be able to correct the mileage after the cluster is installed. Also, being able to pull mileage and engine hours is really dependent on the make/model of vehicle that you're plugged into. Just because a scan tool can perform a certain function on any give make/model, does NOT mean it can perform that same function on EVERY make/model. This scan tool is capable of displaying mileage and hours.... but does your specific make/model allow that info to be displayed on the screen of a scan tool??? Everything a scan tool can "do" is 100% dependent on the vehicle that you're plugged into. Thanks for the question and enjoy the new scan tool!

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Год назад

      No, the wired connection is not noticeable faster. If this was a CORDED tool only, then typically the tablet IS charged from the DLC port in the vehicle while plugged in. However, I do not believe this CORDLESS tool charges while the USB cable is plugged in between the wireless Bluetooth dongle and the tablet itself. I'm not 100% certain on that but I'm pretty sure THIS scan tool does NOT charge while using the USB cable. Keep in mind, this tool is designed to be a cordless tool. The fact that you can connect a wire and make it a wired tool is an added feature to act as a fail safe in case something happens with your Bluetooth connection. This is still a "cordless scan tool". Corded scan tools do not use USB cables for a data connection to the vehicle, they use an old serial style cable and they plug into a port on the top of the scan tool that looks like an old serial port. It's a totally different setup between a cordless and corded scan tool.... Even when comparing the exact same model of scan tool that comes in both versions (corded or cordless). For example, If you look at a corded Autel MK808 corded model VS and Autel MK808BT cordless model.... the corded tool has a serial data port on top of the tablet and the cordless MK808 does not. Same model, different hardware between the two versions.

      @SlipFitGarage  Год назад

      @@markbourque9590 Sure, if you're doing something critical and you can't stand to lose a connection then you can certainly connect a wire for stability reasons.... And even for multiple graphs where you're sending larger amounts of data simultaneously to the scan tool, a data cable would also probably help with any latency issues that MAY occur. But keep in mind, the hardware that comes with any given scan tool kit is designed to work with the software that runs on that scan tool. Meaning... if the Bluetooth connection, Bluetooth dongle and supporting hardware such as the processor and RAM is not good enough to support a high number of live data streams, then they would simply lower the amount of simultaneous data steams in the software down to a level that DOES work with the hardware of the scan tool. Example: The Autel Maxisys ULTRA uses a WiFi connection between the VCI and the scan tool to send/receive OBD2 data to/from the vehicle. WiFi is at least 10 times faster than bluetooth and it can carry infinitely more data at that faster speed. Therefore, the graphing and even the built-in lab scope on the Maxisys ULTRA is basically REAL TIME with almost zero latency and it can show multiple data streams at one time. (not sure of the exact maximum number) ...... but it's also a $3500-$5000 dollar scan tool.... depending winch specific model you by.

      Generally, yes..... but it greatly depends on the year/make/model of the vehicle you're working on. Some vehicles allow fobs to be programmed very easily, and some vehicles damn near require an act of congress and extra hardware (beyond the scan tool itself) to program a fob.

    I have seen so many rave reviews out there about the xtools, but when I see a review from day to day mechanics that have to work with these for a living the reviews say to stay away from xtools and say they are all hype and don't do hardly anything they say. Some say they give false codes and so many of the modules don't work when they can use a scanner side by side and the other scanner works fine. Every scan tool on earth CAN struggle with certain makes/models. No exceptions. Even the Snap on scan tools can have trouble. If you want a "perfect" scan tool, then I would suggest buying the "factory" tool that the manufacturers make for their own vehicles. My suggestion is to buy whatever scan tool that YOU THINK best fits your needs..... and be sure to buy it from a source that has a hassle free return policy. Then when you first receive the tool, be sure to try it on many different vehicles to be sure it works for you. If not, send it back. Otherwise, enjoy the new scan tool.

It could be an 800+ horsepower Dodge Redeye and it will still work. The only thing that might be an issue is a 2022 model year vehicle might be a bit too new. • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Год назад

      This scan tool has all the functionality that any other high end scan tool in this range would have. If you look at any other brand of scan tool in this price range, they all list the same vehicles that their tool can run extra features on. It's not the scan tool manufacturer that is limiting these features, or makes/models, it's the automotive manufacturers. Example: You will see "BMW/ VW / AUDI / Škoda / BENZ / FORD/MAZDA" as a list of vehicles that scan tools will support online/offline, programming/coding. These are pretty much the list of makes of vehicles that will allow those procedures to happen by default from the automotive manufacturer. This isn't just an XTOOl thing.... this is how most scan tools are. And further programming or flashing requires at least a J2534 pass through box and specific manufacturer software. Most guys use a standard scan tool for basic automotive repair procedures. But when they need to re-flash, most guys use a laptop computer with a J2534 pass through box. (J-Box) Now, don't get these features confused with the standard bidirectional control special functions, actuation tests, resets, relearns, etc..... The tool in this video will still do that stuff on Nissan vehicles. Or it SHOULD, anyway. Thanks for the question.

      @@SlipFitGarage That's very interesting to know. Thanks for that explanation.
      Let me try to clarify my question a bit - If a additional car manufacturer were to offer the special functions capability, could I expect Xtool to add access to use them using its periodic updates or bring out a higher model to provide that access?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Год назад +1

      @Philip Morgan
      XTOOL puts out updates all the time. Sometimes daily. They are constantly streamlining and updating their software to make it better. It's NOT just annual updates once a year as new makes/models hit the market. Yes, if an automotive manufacturer adds functionality, XTool (and just about every other scan tool company) will add that functionality to the tool via the one touch update process. It may not happen instantly.... but usually brand new model year cars will hit the scan tool within 6 to 9 months. Not really a big deal unless you work on brand new cars for a living. Most new cars go to the dealership for warranty work in their first few years..... and the dealer usually uses the factory scan tool.

      @@SlipFitGarage Thanks a lot for that.
      You're right about my not working on new cars. Generally, I don't get involved with any cars less than 4-5 years old. I contemplate using a bi-directional scantool just to assist and inform friends who may have those newer cars.
      It's a great help to have some insight into how companies design their scantools and how their features relate to the car manufacturers electronic systems designs. Thanks again for those clarifications.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Год назад

      @@philipmorgan1438 One thing to keep in mind is...... the scan tool is never actually performing anything, it's simply requesting any given function. For example: If you cycle a fuel pump on/off/ or if you perform a crank sensor re-learn, or run a injector balance test, etc, etc.... it because all of those function are already programmed into the vehicles computer from the software engineers at the automotive manufacturer..... the scan tool is simply requesting a function that already exists in the vehicles computer. NO scan tool on earth can force a vehicle to perform a certain bidirectional function (or re-learn, or reset, etc, etc) if the vehicle's manufacturer hasn't already programed that function in the software to begin with. This is why some features and function work on some vehicle but not on others, even when using the same scan tool. EVERYTHING depends on what the manufacturer allows you to do with a scan tool. For another example: that is why I can take ANY bidirectional scan tool and plug it into my same 2006 GMC truck, and see all the exact same bidirectional features and functions. I never changes from scan tool manufacturer to scan tool manufacturer. Sure the look and menu structure layout may change between scan tools, but the certain amount of features and functions never changes. Now, with that said, there is a possibility that a scan tool manufacturer's software is missing something and doesn't allow a certain function to appear in the menu, but that is just a software glitch that can easily be corrected by letting the scan tool tech support department know something that should be there is missing and they will send out a software update within a few says to fix that glitch. Look at it like this..... A scan tool is just a window that allows you to see into your vehicles computer..... cheaper scan tools block some of that view and don't let you see the bidirectional functions. As the price of the scan tool increases, the window becomes more clear and you start seeing more and more features and functions. Those features are always there, but cheaper scan tools don't alllow you to see them. Now, with that said.... once you can see all those features your vehicle has to offer, spending EVEN MORE money on a scan tool will NOT get you even more features. That's where these mid level scan tools are today. The higher priced scan tools will get you a bigger screen, higher resolution screen, bigger battery, faster/bigger processor, more RAM, more ROM, maybe a charging dock, topology mapping..... the overall quality of the higher priced scan tools is what you're buying at that point... and not EVEN MORE features on any given make/model. One last example: I have a 2022 KIA and I absolutely HATE the daytime running lamps. I asked the dealer if their factor computer tool could turn those off. They said no. Well, if the factory tool that KIA dealerships use can't turn off my DRLs, then certainly there won't be an after market scan tool on earth that can turn those DRLs off. Why? Because if that DRL option was not programmed into my vehicle's computer from the factory, then that option doesn't exist at all. There is nothing for a scan tool to "select"..... you can't change a setting that doesn't appear on the screen.
      It's a very common misconception that the scan tool is the device that is actually forcing things to happen when plugged into any given vehicle. That is not true. The scan tool is simply a human interface device that allows people to interact with the computer in the vehicle. The computer in the vehicle is doing everything, the scan tool just allows us to see it.
      I hope all this rambler makes sense.
      Thanks.

      OBD1 vehicles are 28 years old..... very few people are looking to buy a brand new scan tool that only works on 28 year old vehicles, or older. I suggest buying a used OBD1 scan tool if you're working on an OBD1 vehicle. And just to be clear, OBD1 vehicles have nowhere near the data of an OBD2 vehicles. OBD1 vehicles typically have only a small handful of trouble codes, and only a small handful of live data PIDSs. That's it! Using an OBD1 scan tool on an OBD1 vehicles is NOTHING like working on modern stuff today. Also, keep in mind, those adapters that come with some scan tool kits MIGHT be useful on modern vehicles produced and sold overseas. Only vehicles sold in the USA are legally required to use the OBD2 standard.... vehicles in other countries may still use some of those other styles of data plugs. I honestly do not know. I only work on vehicles in the USA so therefore I only need the OBD2 style of DLC. Thanks.

    Cranking compression?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  9 месяцев назад

      As far as I know, the only real way to measure compression is to screw a pressure gauge into the spark plug holes and directly measure the pressure. You can also electronically measure "relative compression" with a lab scope.... with one channel being an amp clamp around the starter wire, and another channel being an ignition trigger around one of the spark plug wires. Measuring compression with ONLY a scan tool is impossible as far as I know. Unless a certain make/model of vehicle has that feature built into the vehicle's computer to begin with.... and you simply need a scan tool to display that data.
      You see, scan tools don't do anything by themselves. Nothing. EVERY feature and function you see on the screen of a scan tool is already programmed into the vehicles computer from the factory. Your question is very vague. It consists of two words and a question mark. No make and model information. Nothing about compression with a lab scope, etc, etc... I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. It's possible that certain vehicles on earth have the ability to do a self compression test within the vehicles computer, and then display those results on the screen of a scan tool..... but measuring compression with a scan tool by itself is impossible. Thanks for the question...
