- Today we had a somewhat of a unique job removing lots of English ivy that was overgrowing in this huge flower bed. The ivy slowly made its way from other parts of the property and ended up growing under all of these cedar trees and the result is a huge headache.
When the ivy is given freedom, like any other invasive species, it will take advantage and will slowly creep under and over everything it can, creating a thick green carpet that chokes away at all other organic material. We were able to take this huge flowerbed and get it all cleaned up and removed of ivy to the best of our ability.

having cleared a much smaller area of ivy at my parents I ca appreciate how tough that must have been. I thought I had missed a trick when you started with the brush cutter but you ended up like us pulling it all out by hand. Tough work. 👍
If I could just cut it that would have been great! But it seems that english ivy is one of those plants that will always require manual extraction.
I am working on my mom's yard. My dad passed and he kept it looking so pretty. The vines have taken over and I need to restore it as best I can. To look at it overwhelms me but with your video I see that I need to take it one section at a time. Thank you!

I am about 80% done my ivy removal on my property. I have spent about 1.5 weeks! When you said 2 days, I had to watch. While you sure have a great back and work hard, that ivy will be back in no time - you did not dig up the roots. And man, that is a job!! Thank you for the video and making many aware that if they see ivy.., kill it on the spot before it takes over the world😃😃

I’ve used the same technique here in other areas and it seemed to work. I don’t just try to pull-up the stuff that’s on top, but the vines/roots that are in the ground were uprooted as well. 😁👍

Me and my son are going to be tackling ivy today in an overgrown garden. We have also tackled a huge blackberry bush before, we basicly just chopped it up into pieces and bagged it. You can use a hedge cutter too. Was hard work especially dealing with the thorns. just wear your gloves. We're in the UK. It's going to be a long day for us. Thanks for the video.

Fabulous job! I'm so glad you removed it from around the trees as it will eventually choke a tree and that's another problem for the homeowner to remove dead trees. Snakes also like to be in the ivy and with that wood pile, I'm surprised you didn't come across one.

I really enjoyed your music during your video, you don’t hear that type of music much anymore. You did a wonderful job, I have Ivy from my neighbors house that I battle all the time and it is terribly hard stuff to get rid of. I have heard in Oregon that we can’t even buy it anymore because it is so invasive they won’t sell it. Keep up the good work and the good music.

I think Ivy is so beautiful but unfortunately very invasive. I love gardening but leaning down like that for an extended time is horrible for the back. You worked so very hard, even stung but did an amazing job. Btw, bumble bees are scary, so are spiders!

Hi Karima, I work for myself, here I work as a landscaper and I specifically focus on the maintenance of properties.
Have you ever used an Oregon Mulching blade on a brushcutter to tear through the ivy? I know they've quite popular over in England for just that, but it seems like a folks on this side of the pond don't know about them.
I have used the blade on another job due to them being so thick. I couldn’t even cut through most of the large roots due to them being so thick and large. I think it would work really well on smaller and fresh ivy.

So how do you remove it in a way to be sure it won’t grow back? Do you have to pull the roots of each bundle, straight from the ground, or are you sawing it all down and then spraying some weed killer to get the roots?
I cut the ivy into sections and as I rolled it up I would pull the roots out as well. When I was sawing I would cut into the layer of dirt and cut the ivy vine roots as well. But after a job like this, to permanently prevent the ivy from growing back, a herbicide will keep things in check.

Well I ripped up all the roots, removing the roots is a sure way to keep them from growing back.

Love the music but I really wanted to know how your cleaning it up
I used a hand saw to cut through the vines from the surface to the ground and then I would cut sections.
After cutting each section I would roll up and pull the Ivy vines. It’s a lot better then trying to pull each individual vine separately.
In Georgia it's bee nests and snakes with the English ivy.
You’re so right!! It’s the end of April and I’m getting ready to do this. I have a large area along the driveway that has ivy starting to clim up the trees. It’s coming from the neighbor. I’m planing to weed eat first so there are no snake surprises. Don’t want to reach in and come out with copperhead. I figure once I do that I can use the lawnmower on it until I get it pulled. I’m a 68 year old so will probably take me a few weeks working a little everyday. I have a sick husband so have to do things and hour here and an hour there.
Did you also remove the roots?. .if not, they will come back very, very fast.
I pulled the roots up as best as I could. When I went around the area it did seem that everything was uprooted.
@@golovinpropertyservices Some of those roots have a ball type root at the bottom where all those vines come from. You have to take out that ball of root down there.

Well done. It’s a horrible job because ivy is unbelievably tough and stubborn to wrestle with.
I use full strength Agent Orange on English Ivy. Man how I hate that stuff. Mine grows from neighbors yard, invades my trellis where Climatis and Cardinal Climbers and Morning Glories once thrived. Terminate....with extreme prejudice

This is just regular ivy, it’s a great thing it’s not poisonous!
I was wondering why you were calling it a flower bed because even if that's the goal going forward there's a gazillion roots of the ivy underground that will never allow that area to become a flower bed unless some black plastic sheeting and months of letting those ivy roots cook underneath it. Lol PO p is applied....6 months to a year... And only when you check underneath it periodically and there are NO white or light green growths can you begin a new "flower bed"...SAD BUT TRUE...

We usually don't really expect any wasps or stinging insects.
You know, I honestly thought English Ivy was so cool... you see all the beautiful homes in Europe with it..... but BOY OH BOY, was I stupid!!! Flipping awful nasty INVASIVE crap, that's nearly impossible to KILL...... Oh I feel for you!

All depends where you’re from.
You didn’t get all the roots. It’ll all come back. You can’t pull ivy from above and expect that all the roots will come up - even in ideal soil. You have to loosen the soil and lift them out using a pick mattock. Then scoop your gloved hand in the dirt to feel for vertical tap roots, that you then have to pull out.
But when I pull ivy, I first use a cordless reciprocating saw, with a 12” carbide tipped pruning saw blade, to cut through the ivy vines and roots into small 6” or 12” surface squares. Once that’s done, you can rake off most of the, now unconnected, vines. And when you grub with the mattock, you shouldn’t have to pull out your priming saw very often to cut vines or roots; they’re already cut.
As far as bumblebees and yellow-jackets go, I’ve had so many jobs interrupted by nests, that I started to carry a bee suit so that I could deal with the nests and finish the job.
