It's amazing how very few regular people actually play according to the rules. I had a cousin that bought a second game set just so we had unlimited houses and hotels when we played.
Huh, this actually makes me want to play Monopoly again. Brian's observation that Monopoly reveals a person's character is something everyone already knew, in a way, but I never really saw it as a tool for insight, more of a general condemnation of human nature.
The thing that breaks monopoly is when you have multiple player who are super into it, and one player who isn’t, and someone gets that player to make a bad trade which screws over the rest of the players in turn
Original rules are really good and you can actually strategise, depending on your hand you can still come back by having board knowledge, that's if you play the original rules and not house rules. Its actually a shame how many people never play the game as intended, it's a great experience.
I remember our youth group broke out into a huge fight over a game of monopoly. I was just watching the train wreck. Someone was talking smack and it got personal. The most serious game of monopoly I have ever seen.
You probably are. Most people breathe shallow and from their chest when you should breath from your stomach. Lay down put one hand on your stomach, one on your chest, your chest should barely move while you take in a deep breath, but it probably wont
As a kid my strategy was to buy up everything I land on no matter my cash flow. It worked out very well in my household. I would be able to have monopolies quickly! I would buy the cheap properties next to boardwalk and put hotels on them. My family would wonder why I would pay a pretty penny to have those two cheap properties. It always worked in my favor though. I would be very aggressive in trading almost paying everything I got just to get the last color in the property set in order to start building houses. I love monopoly!
My uncle and I played monopoly for 4 days straight. I absolutely refused to lose. I monopolize on every other color on the board. It was no money left in the bank, and all the hotels were on the board. He owned Marvin gardens(yellow) and park place( blue) and for some reason I would always land on blue or yellow going around. It was terrifying rolling those dice after you pass Illinois(red). Eventually he took me for all my money then I had to sell off my hotels, then houses, and finally the deeds themselves. I was devastated I never played again.
Huh, I'm from australia and there's no such thing as boardwalk in our standard version, it's all english places, always thought they were the same in every country but apparently not.
I think the standard US Monopoly is based on Atlantic City, hence the Boardwalk. That doesn't sound anything special, unlike Park Lane and Mayfair, which are in one of the most expensive places to live in the world!

Standard Italian version has streets names from the most expensive Italian cities. I think each country has its own to make it more meaningful.
I had played the indian version all my life, And the game had indian cities and was called "business" .. I used to think monopoly was some different board game, but turns out its just the american version of business.
I was playing with my family and I knew tips and tricks for the game. I had all the knowledge and strategie but i lost because of my luck with dices. At the end, i was like: "well it was fun and i lost. Here's all my properties and my remaining money" My brother: "wait, that's not how the game works." Me *reading the passage from the rule while everyone is in shock about it* "yeah, that's why the game is called monopoly and not social capitalism"
Me and my cousins play monopoly in a quite different way, i am sure some of you might like it...there is 3 extra concept added.. 1) we form a team of 2 player and usually 3 teams used to play the game( 6 players but there can be 4 teams if 8 players are there). 2) Intuitively you know that you ll enjoy the game if there is a competition in the game. So to increase competition we put limitations on the no. Of deeds( Sites, stations and utilities). Which is 4 for each player and 8 for each team( or in case of 4 teams, 3 for each player and 6 for each team). As a consequence you ll see that each team gets a equal no. Of deeds with difference of just 1 or 2. 3) Now the best rule we came up is of dealing window which opens once, when each and every deeds is bought up by the teams, So now to make a monopoly on different sites we make a deal with other team to complete our 3 or 2 deeds of same colour to build hotel or houses.. And then follow the rest of the rules of monopoly honestly, and be loyal to the banker, i am sure you ll enjoy more than the classical or bookish version of monopoly...
I didn’t even know I was called Boardwalk in the states, here in the uk it’s Mayfair Idk which came first but it makes sense to change it by country to be recognisable
Tip: Railroads are the most valuable properties EARLY in the game in contrast to land properties. Having a land set is only a real investment when you can afford the houses (no one is gonna let you do that), but a railroad set builds bank with compound interest and is undervalued as an early game property by average players. Deal with power and not money,
*what is it?*: a game centered around capitalism where the main goal is increasing your own wealth by bringing other people to bankruptcy.... *how do you play it?*: honor... sounds about right
I think he's referring to the idea that you don't know someone until you fight them; at which point, you see who they really are. Even if it's just in a game, how they act there is a good indicator of how they'll act in real-life stress scenarios. And yeah: honor doesn't mean you won't beat someone - rather, it indicates HOW you beat them, and what you do when you win (or loose). It's called good sportsmanship, but yeah - that's just another way of saying "honor".
Monopoly was actually created as a critique of capitalism. The goal of the original game (The Landlord's Game) was for the players to realise the detriment of monopolies and pool together their resources and make the Monopoly World better for everyone
All my years of playing, we never auctioned the property. I wasn't taught that, but just learned that a few days ago reading the instructions. Also, we used to put money on free parking....never understood why and never questioned it. I don't do that anymore. I rather play the correct way. I've noticed they added new board pieces to the game, have a new money holder and added a few different cards to community chest and chance. One new card I've noticed is the take all the $100s out the back and toss them in the air. Whoever's catches them keep them and the ones that wasn't goes back to the bank.
FINALLY!! Thank you for saving me and my friends! We have been continuously playing the same round of Monopoly for 5 years and we couldn't stop until we found this video while playing, Thanks!
(sorry, reading it years later) Actually in this case, it is the Planters Effect: the Planters Peanuts mascot, Mr. Peanut, has a superficial resemblance to Rich Uncle Pennybags/Mr. Monopoly, with a top hat, and occasionally a cane (or walking-stick). And Mr. Peanut memorably sports a monocle.
my last relationship ended because of this game (i've got it as a gift from her, ironically) . I don't wanna say that everything was perfect before monopoly but this game has been the sparkle that eventually burned all the rest. I'm glad it happened btw, thanks monopoly
Whenever me and my cousins play, we always have someone take their phone out and keep the recording the board. That way, if someone flips over the board, we'll know exactly what was where
I was genuinely surprised to find while watching this that I was already doing most of this - some consciously and some not. There’s a lot to be said when the finer strategy of a game can be that intuitive without being obvious about it while also being friendly enough for beginners to play.
The only time when anyone ever read the instructions is when there was an argument.

Make a new rule and have someone play as the government, so they can just bail someone out if they go bankrupt. Adds more realism.
Highly underrated
Only if you can build a corporation or be your own bank. Yeah that would be very realistic.

That's dope! How was he as a teacher?
cthullus klaus he was actually super chill he and the rest of the class always used to clown around but when it was time to get serious he was hella serious, and towards the end of the year he brought up this solar cooker project idea to the school for all of 8th grade science which sounded like a pain at first but actually doing it was so much fun especially the contest at the end. I'm pretty sure the Norwegian was Bjorn who is the 2009 monopoly world champion.
Wrong. You see, being good at capitalism includes keeping it from imploding.
Monopoly's origin was in an anti-capitalist game, developed by followers of libertarian socialist Henry George, and was designed to demonstrate that capitalism naturally leads to land monopolies.

Original rules are really good and you can actually strategise, depending on your hand you can still come back by having board knowledge, that's if you play the original rules and not house rules.
Its actually a shame how many people never play the game as intended, it's a great experience.
Unfortunatly, too many people dont read the rules, and just learn from other people who also play wrong.

Filippo Alfarè Lovo true, I’m Dutch and every color is a city with the most famous streets

I didn’t even know I was called Boardwalk in the states, here in the uk it’s Mayfair
Idk which came first but it makes sense to change it by country to be recognisable

*how do you play it?*: honor...
sounds about right
Yeah I thought the same
-You have to buy all the houses you can so others won't be able to access them
-honor
@@kevinschultz6091 A thumb war is a quicker way to honor.

Whoever's catches them keep them and the ones that wasn't goes back to the bank.
i guess those rules are made to prevent kids from crying :D
If you play the correct way, the game is actually pretty short

Still can't believe the monopoly guy doesn't have a monocle. The Mandela Effect is real.

Whenever me and my cousins play, we always have someone take their phone out and keep the recording the board. That way, if someone flips over the board, we'll know exactly what was where
