Time for another Soviet keyboard! This week we look at a rather obscure keyboard model from behind the Iron Curtain. Using magnetic reed switches, it also happens to come with the world's rattliest spacebar xD . Hope you enjoy the video! :)

The practice sentence was typed according to QWERTY layout but of course in Cyrillic it doesn't make any sense :p .
It's not his keyboard, it's OUR keyboard
because we're stole this one
AGAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAH SO TRUE BROOOOO
@@ac9h482 not bro, ouro
The main problem when they were designing this keyboard is that they couldn't make the space bar one unit.
when i read that i just started lmao xD
Going from life of Boris to this was... An experience.
Also, wish I could find a keyboard like this or a hall effect with ease...
Also, from what i've heard, the layout is pronounced as "itsuken"

I seriously have no idea what these abbreviations mean, and I'm Russian myself! Millennial, though...
from my limited knowledge of the russian language, i'd guess the ВВ key on the bottom right would mean вверх (up); no idea about the other ones tho :"D

When I was a kid in the 1980s my father repaired or modified a joystick for me with this type of switches. They made this extremely quiet, high-pitched sound when the two wires inside the tube made contact. I remember purposefully using the joystick as gently as possible so I could hear that sound.
The labels correspond to various text attributes (blocked, hidden, blinking, etc.) and control characters (CR, LF, ESC, ...)

Wow, you never see people talking about old keyboards from before the 80s often, it's a fascinating look into _what do you mean this keyboard was made in 1990_

To be perfectly honest... It isn't :) But he still gets huge kudos for the attempt and effort.

Glorious Model Number!!!
Plot twist : it was Dyatlov's keyboard and it's still radioactive
Don't worry, it's just 3.6 roentgen. Not great... Not terrible.
tbh his voice is more satisfying than the keyboard sound itself
There really is something about the old Soviet stuff.
Latin JCUKEN (ЙЦУКЕН). This was the predominant layout on the Soviet-made microcomputers during the 1980s. E/E, A/A, O/O, T/T .... I/И ;)
JCUKEN is still the dominant layout in Russia and other post-Soviet countries using Cyrillic to this day.
Yes, the mention of Cyrillic usage matters, as Moldova was a member of the USSR but uses Latin.
@@daemonspudguy No, not JCUKEN(ЙЦУКЕН). But QWERTY(ЙЦУКЕН). Its different. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout
@@daemonspudguy The JCUKEN layout was used in the USSR for all computers (both domestically produced and imported such as Japan-made MSX-compatible systems) except IBM-compatible ES PEVM due to its phonetic compatibility with Russian ЙЦУКЕН layout (see right). The layout has the advantage of having punctuation marks on Latin and Cyrillic layouts mapped on the same keys.[48] This Russian Typewriter layout can be found on many Russian typewriters produced before the 1990s, and it is the default Russian keyboard layout in the OpenSolaris operating system.
@@daemonspudguy Also you can read about Ch. The Russian phonetic keyboard layout.
That SA dasher deserved that hall effect switches
What a rattly unbearable spacebar indeed. In typing demo, the keys however don't sound too bad. Sound also suggests smoothness likely not a strong point :)
Love the way pressing the space bar imitates the collapse of the universe.
With that Kono-Keystone keyboard on its way later in a few weeks, I'm excited to see how it will stack up against the best of the best keyboards (that survived at least)! This however, much like the other Soviet keyboards, smoothness isn't a strong suit. At least they succeeded in durability!
That space bar is insane! 🤣
The proper name for the switches would be PKM-1B, you can clearly see this model number if you desolder one.

damn those SA keycaps on the Steelseries board caught me offguard; it's fucking gorgeous
SA Dasher looks incredible on almost everything; the original Dashers were real lookers too :D . That Modern Dasher project made my jaw drop xD .
That spacebar is wobblier than a late 90's apple pro keyboard that's been in a secondary high school for 20 years..
This is the Big Ass Enter's Backspace taken to its logical extreme
Fun fact : The serial number is actually a code to activate the Winter Solider

You should make a review of MC7004. It is a capacitive Buckling Spring keyboard from USSR. If in good condition, it is almost as good as Model m.
That space bar gave me flashbacks to Vietnam
the reason why they need durable switches is so that vodka spills aren't a problem anymore
And it also had to survive reactor 4
vodka spills would clean contacts actually, probably.

Interesting fact that number 0 button is always in a wrong place ^^ Its should be instead of " ~ ", I use keytweak for stuff like this, mouse is the same, I will create a tutorial probably after getting the good camera and good microphone. There is much more flexible approach of getting the same results, just imagine how much time and force you need to get the 0 key button. and btw Keyboard looks like a reconstruction of USSR - the complete nightmare
In Soviet Russia you don't rattle the space bar, the space bar rattles you!
Is JCUKEN a real layout? It is time for a Google search.
Yes, it is! :)
It's based on standard Cyrillic layout when you have ЙЦУКЕН on top of the QWERTY. Someone thought that it will be easier to remember the location of Latin letters if they will be rearranged by their phonetical similarity with Cyrillic letters.
ISO SA dasher
Honestly the typing sounds post-apocalyptic. And it's not just the spacebar, which sounds like a screen door in a hurricane. Cool video though as usual. But not enough swearing.
Wow, the sound of that spacebar! I can feel the Kafkaesque dread from an office deep within Soviet bureaucracy. "Would somebody fix that damn keyboard, already!!!" "But sir, that would require filling out form 1984ФOДAБЬ..." "Never mind!"
1984Fodab, my favorite form.
it really doesn't look like something made in 1990, even considering how behind the times USSR was with computers.

This keyboard will last longer then Soviet union did.
Simo Haÿha lasted longer, and he came earlier!
Which keyboard is shown as a sidenote on 3:32 ??? The blue one in particular, where can it be bought?
Love the Russian accent. :-)
4:21 also one of the longest spacebars i've seen... what is that, 9 units long?
I think the longest I've seen so far was 11 u xD .
actually laughed audibly at ur soviet impressions
Did anyone annotate what he typed?
Did Artyom get this keyboard for you from deep within The Metro?
He could use it to bash a few Nosalis' skulls, if nothing else.
check it for radiation
That board is not "tee-see-...", its "tee-ass-...". Those letters are cyrillic.
I know, I can read Cyrillic ;) . It was either one or two pedantic remarks from Eastern viewers that it's TS, or thirty pedantic ones from everyone else that it's TC :p .
If you want to see an example, watch the comments to the EoY video where the title was originally spelled with 2018 instead of 2019, before I changed it, every single comment was about that xD .

photos.app.goo.gl/AF9kKB2siVBUU8MW7
ps: make it works with some arduino micro is not hard, main problem is that in 2020 we still have only ansi keycodes, so we need to use some software on OS side to make unicode cyrillic symbols works, which is weak and not as powerful as board programming
where can i buy one?
Puts the Red in Cherry MX Red
They are completely different from any of the switches Cherry have ever made.
My opinion: better than razer blackwidow 2014. Any garbage is better than razer blackwidow 2014.
When's Ellipse's ModelFKeyboards.com project review happening? I took delivery of mine last week and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out! I consider it a god among keyboards! With it I like to gloat to gamers: "My $420 keyboard doesn't glow! 😹"

Well, I hope no one had to stand in line to obtain this keyboard. If the old Soviet Union was in the Sahara instead of Russia, then the people in that country would have experienced sand shortages. (Sorry, Old joke, but it still makes me smile.) Nice review by the way.
In Soviet Russia keyboard types on you
holy shit that spacebar is worse then the dell Sk-8115 and 8135
Mb osu test?
any idea why the key caps were two different colors?
@Lucid Moses : ABS plastic yellows in time due to a flame retardant used in the plastic which reacts with UV light, cigarette smoke also reacts with the abs plastic to change it's color. Or, in this case, the Russian/Soviet who made the keycaps may have ran out of a color and used another one
There are three options:
- most reasonable. This keyboard was used in some organization, and lettering was destroyed, so some persons simply changed some keycaps using another keyboard. Batches were very different in colour back than, so match was not perfect by any means.
- plausible. Back then there was no such thing as a quality control on exact color. Computers were utility things, made for soviet citizens better calculations, so who'll care if it black or white, or looks like shit - if it works, than it'll do :) Keycaps were produced on more than one factory, so colors are different.
- also plausible. Soviet plastics are very different from non-soviet. They were partially reinvented here, due to regime. And, yeah color of soviet plastics is an additional pain in the ass, due to great inconsistency. I have 4 different USSR-boards and all they have color inconsistencies of different degrees.
@@derzemel Haha no it's definitely yellowing xD .
