I am not sure if the way I work is any better with the router. I usually cut with a saw to get the edge pretty close to the finished line. Then I make a template of what the shape will look like and use a flush trim bit using the template. I have real trouble controlling a router when using it to cut through a piece of wood, I find it is much easier just finishing off an edge.

Thanks for the input! We never tried cutting with a saw first. We definitely struggled cutting thick wood with the router (as you saw!)
Totally agreed, cut close to the line with any kind of saw and use the router for finishing only.
