VAN LIFE PLUMBING SYSTEM | STEP BY STEP VAN PLUMBING WITH HOT WATER, GREY WATER AND OUTDOOR SHOWER
In this video, we show you how we built our van life plumbing system in our 2020 Ford Transit. We used a 29 gallon water tank that fits over the wheel well, Pex tubing and an propane tankless water heater for our hot water. We've been using this plumbing system for about a year and a half with no issues! We also show you our super simple grey water system. At the end of the video, you'll see a demonstration of our outdoor shower that we use while we are out living the van life. After watching this video, you should be able to confidently tackle your own van life plumbing system.

That’s a good work. But did you consider CO emitted from propane heater inside your van?
Yes, I guess that is something i should have mentioned in the video. We have a CO alarm installed in the van and always have ventilation when using the water heater.
I've got a 17 ford transit it 250 ok here knowledge, t a company do conversion thdey enlarge the van both side 4 " to get 8" more room total. So dont panel loseing 4" both side using the metal column, make use of it sand sin 8" of living space . Plan this way, as many van furnished look wild open empty space. It matter. How. The back tire fender rest a 6" long board on it, then measure a can good high, so iv got 3 shelves of can goods 2 side by side, above the left back storage but I can pull the upper panel off, the center top my cooking oil etc and in Tupperware I can seal about 3 of them then my stove center on van under it my portable Toilet slide under ( if you want it name ask best) and 6 gallon slim water them my 2,500. Recliner. On the passenger side other than the very front side door I've 2' storage on the ground like a huge coffin carpet cover black as that my couch , sl looking back it empty, yea for the ceiling only need the right side cut a ply wood in long half .cover it with wall carpet and angle it the top 3" down the bottom about 1 feet cut hole for access. I love the wide open feeling by not paneling and wasting 8" that Ian using for storage instead so it like a empty van open space wise , but fit the couch and refrig way on the back corner abd both door are useable to go out.
2017 transit
And "tons tons" of can good as corn, cream of mushroom etc stored. Live it up
To each their own! Sure we lost some space by framing and putting walls up but we have more than enough space to store all of our stuff that we need and then some…. A bike, a bunch of camping gear, suitcases, disc golf discs, etc. We even have more room if we wanted to go get tons and tons of canned corn! Plus we love the way it looks!
Thank you!
You’re welcome!!
Should of showed the sliding window
Can't wait to get one!
You have much more patience than I do. What a fiddly, pain in the butt upgrade......but I am sure the results are worth it.
I’ve done stereos and speakers in other cars and the was by far the most tedious one. We spend a lot of time driving so it was definitely worth the upgrade! It sounds great!
Enjoyed the video. I ordered my transit back in July, wishing they would start building it already lol
Another van idiot.
Quite the project. Thinking of undertaking this project this weekend!
Good luck with your bed!
Thanks so much for making this video. I've been worried about where to connect the ignition switch wire.
Happy to help! 😊
It's great seeing your problem solving process! thanks for another great video!
Thank you! Happy to share it all 😊
Unnecessary weight
If you watch the long format video you’ll see how we shave weight off.
I love the simple, easy way you explain the process. It makes things much more understandable for the layperson
I try to break things down as much as possible so even a beginner like me can do it!!
I am not sure if the way I work is any better with the router. I usually cut with a saw to get the edge pretty close to the finished line. Then I make a template of what the shape will look like and use a flush trim bit using the template. I have real trouble controlling a router when using it to cut through a piece of wood, I find it is much easier just finishing off an edge.
Thanks for the input! We never tried cutting with a saw first. We definitely struggled cutting thick wood with the router (as you saw!)
Totally agreed, cut close to the line with any kind of saw and use the router for finishing only.
Hi Guys! Thanks for all your videos! I am very interested in a video about altitude adjustment. I have the same heater and am about to go up to altitude don’t want to get clogged up!
I guess we will have to make a video about this process. But heres a quick run down... This will only work if you have the same remote/controller as us (which has three buttons on the bottom of it the look like this ( < enter > ) First you have to unlock it: To unlock it you hold the Left button untill the screen starts flashing, then you hit the enter button untill you get to the screen that looks like this (- - - -) this is where you enter the unlock code which is 1688. To enter that, you have to hit either the < or > button to get to 1 then hit enter then < or > button to get to 6 hit enter ... until you get 1688! Once you've done that you can change the fuel to air ratios. I have a table that i follow but i dont know where i got it from. If you tell me what elevation you are at i can tell you the P/HZ values that i would set it to. But lets say your going to 6000 ft... I'd set the low P/HZ value to .8 and the high to 2.3. Leave the air RPM the same!
Thank you this is so helpful! I’m between 6,000-11,000. I’ll look for the chart online. I also have the 3 button one and struggled to find information on this so thank you so much!
@@nomadmaddie my left button goes into timer settings when I hold it. Do you have the vevor one with only three buttons on the bottom not the sides? That’s what I have
@@RebeccaLiebenberg Sounds like we have the same controller. Ours goes into timer settings first too. Instead of setting the time you just need to hit the enter (middle) button a couple times until you get to the password screen (- - - -)
How has that laminate floor held up? Are you glad you laid it before your cabinetry?
It still looks great! The garage has a couple small cosmetic scratches due to a couple small rocks underneath our storage bins but nothing to worry about. Easy to clean and we have definitely spilled water on the floor many times it does not seep through to the sub floor at all! If we were to do it again, we would still lay it under the cabinets.
I really enjoyed this, great job guys.😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Not sure why everyone uses tape and cuts on the outside. I did the template on the inside and cut from the inside out, no tape needed
i guess it's just easier to visualize the window on the outside. Also, Blue tape is cheap!
@@nomadmaddie I just went as far up and back as I could go with it on the inside it was like skipping 2 of your steps but I build campers for a living so it makes sense
So helpful to watch all these steps and considerations as I begin to plan out my own cabinetry. Thanks!
If you are considering shaker style cabinet doors (like ours) be sure to watch our upper cabinet pt. 2 video. We go into more detail about building them in that video!
Really appreciate your series! The van looks great, keep going with the vids! 🙌👍
Glad you like them!
Awesome! I'm picking up my van Friday and have been thinking about layout and you have done what would work best for me! Thanks for the head start on the build. Great work!
Good Luck! let us know if you have any questions. Check out all our links if you're curious what products we used!
Was there something already plugged in before you replaced it with the harness?
There was nothing plugged in.
So fun to see the process like this!
If only we could build it in 30 seconds!
I wish I saw this video a week ago 😢. It’s a lesson learned. I’ll watch the others before I do anymore wiring.
What screws did you guys use for pocket screws?
Very professional look you got at the end after all the struggle in the beginning 👏👏👏
Yes! I think that pretty much sums up the entire van build experience 😆
@@nomadmaddie Be proud of it!
Another solution I’ve seen was mounting the diesel tank under the front hood - I think that was on a sprinter though. Since I’m going to have propane for my stove, I am leaning towards a propane heater - 2 flammable elements in my van seem slightly more manageable than 3 😅. Any reason you chose diesel over propane? Is it less expensive to fuel or more efficient? Thanks! I’m really enjoying your build series! Happy travels!
Propane heaters produce a decent amount of moisture which we didn't want and the Chinese diesel heater is way cheaper!
Building upper cabinets that are flush and level seems like such a huge challenge! I’ve been tempted to buy a prebuilt solution from one of the vanlife companies (omg $1k!) but would much rather build my own. Y’all did great! Thank you for detailing your process and lesson learned! Very helpful!
If you have a roof that is flatter than ours this job would probably be a lot easier!
Loved this ! Thank you soooooo much
Glad you liked it!!
New sub 🫶🏻 that mattress looks like cake 😂
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for this video. I’ve seen a lot about swivel seats in a Ford Transit, but yours is the first to mention the cable and loosening it under the van.
It's definitely a crucial part of the install!
Have you experienced condensation issues with your bump out window since you have direct contact wood to metal? I'm concerned with wood rot. Thanks.
Haven't noticed any issues at all. And for reference, we spent the entire winter driving from Lake Tahoe to Colorado hitting all the ski resorts in between. If we could do one thing differently it would be making the window frames ever so slightly bigger because part of the wood frame rubs on the metal frame and creates an annoying noise while we drive in the wind.
Plus the gland was installed backwards. The gland should have been installed with the wires facing to the back
It doesn't leak though!
@@nomadmaddie well that's great..
Canoso, deja hablar , o sos vos el que ganaste la medalla
If you had two CCP points, i believe the larger amp one is only live when the ignition is on. Would this be a good place for the D+ wire?
I'm not entirely sure about this but I remember reading that the CCPs are powered up to 30 minutes after the vehicle is turned off. Which means your DC-DC would most likely drain the car battery.
@@nomadmaddie I think you're right about that. I guess I can always test it out. I have dual batteries and alternators, so my batteries should be nearly full after every drive. My Renogy DC to DC is 60 amps, so it'll draw 30 amps in 30 minutes. I should be fine. Only other issue is opening the door may restart the 30 minute timer again. I'm just trying to avoid spending another $30 dollars on the harness, haha. This van is bleeding me dry.
Can confirm that opening the door turns stuff on again. We have a subwoofer that drains the battery if we aren't careful!
“How to fit a mattress dangerously in the van, ignoring all fire safety” 😢
Safety 3rd!
That cheesecloth is the fire sock that protects you from melting to the bed in a fire! If you still have it, put it back on and sew it to fit.
Good to know! but that thing is long gone...
Right on bro! I'm about the same height as you and always wondered if I would fit in a van. lol I would have cut the matress maybe half an inch smaller that way you would have room for the sheets and such
I think that making any bed in a van is going to be a pain. We just pull the bed corners up and pull the sheets over. 👍🏼
Your videos are my favorite for van conversion, and I am using them as start reference for planning my own build. I appreciate that you include the learning curves and less ideal situations. These videos are inciteful and very well thought out, I hope you both continue vlogging your journey. Thank you guys for all the help 🤗
Thank you so much! I’m happy they’re helpful! Enjoy your build!
I am in the designing/dreaming stage, while I search for a new/used Transit 144 WB HiRoof van … I am using the free sketch up and have bed, upper cabinets and utility (fridge, electrical) cabinet done. I just placed them in a 81” h x 70” w x 122” l box. Can you share your sketch up van so I can fit my current plan inside?
not sure how to export a sketch up file but i'll try and figure that out!
I have added links to our 3D model to the description. Go check it out!
This video is so helpful. I'm building out a 2017 Promaster and it's been a slow and frustrating process so I really appreciate your video. Question - is there a reason why you guys bought the duplex 14awg wire and not the individual red and black 14 awg wires I've seen many people doing? Just curious because for me this wire stage is complicated to understand.
Marine grade duplex is much more sturdy. It has a thick outer sheath protecting the wires inside!
Excellent video!
Thank you very much!
I'm looking at ford transit but the width of the van is 178 cm only so not sure how I can fit side ways, even with the framed boxes in you'd still lose probably about 2 cm🙄
Nico is 6ft tall and has about 2 inches of space with the boxes if he lays fully extended on his back. The Transit gets wider in the middle of the van. I’m not sure where your measurement was taken from, but if you make your bed platform high enough (and depending how tall you are), you should fit.
I knew I had bad vibes about this chick… then she put on the mask… 🙄 I knew it.
Wouldn't you want to protect your friends and family from Covid?
@@nomadmaddie with a mask that does nothing? How many boosters you got 🤣
Do you have the 3D model available? As a place to start with a van build :)
I'll try and put a link in the video description!
I have added links to our 3D model to the description. Go check it out!
Awesome video! Very helpful content and I love the lessons learnt section. ❤
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Very nice and informative. I like the Transit, and you guys did a beautiful buildout. I look forward to your coming videos. One tip, is that if it charges at 60 Amps, you don't need to say "per hour." Amps is a rate. Charging at 60 Amps for 2 hours should put 120 Amp-hours into the battery. Or: 60A * 2h = 120Ah. FWIW, Watts is also a rate. Watts can be more useful, because our appliances are often rated in Watts. Like if I use a 1500W hairdryer (I wish I had that much hair!) for an hour, that would use up 1500Wh of battery capacity. We get Watts by multiplying Volts times Amps. So, similarly, if you charge at 60A at 12.8V for 2 hours you put 60A * 12.8V * 2h = 1536Wh into the battery.
Totally! Just thought phrasing it this way helps make things a little more clear for people who aren’t super familiar with electrical lingo. 😊
I've seen some people use a relay connected to the C-33e port. So my question is do you not need one to make this work for the Renogy DC charger. Thanks!
We read that too and figured we’d try it without the relay because it was confusing us. I’m happy to say we’ve been using the charger for about a year now and it works perfectly.
People us a relay because they connect to the "engine run" instead of the "ignition". The "engine run" is a switched ground.
I think it's dangerous to mount the breaker box so that the switches work backwards that is, flip down on, flip up off. It work for you, but imagine if you sell your van, and the new owners are used to the convention of up = on, down = off. Don't you see the potential problem? Also it's a good habit to NOT wear metallic jewelry when working on electrical. Good info on the actual wiring.
The switches have very clear “on” and “off” visible so I don’t think it’s that confusing. When working on the system, you’ll use the master switch to cut power to everything so the breakers stay in the “on” position unless tripped. If we ever sell the van, this could easily be explained to someone 😊
@@nomadmaddie years of muscle memory will inevitably take over.
You're the reason why people hate making RUclips Videos. Always have something negative to say.
