Investing in Cigars. Introduction

  • A few days ago I received 2 messages from 2 different people. The first person was telling me he had purchased a box of Cohiba 55 Aniversario EL 2021 and wanted to know how to sell it as he needed money and the second one was asking me if I thought it was a good idea to invest in a box of Cohiba 55 Aniversario EL 2021 at €3,300 a box. I have realised that many people are now buying cigars as an investment to make a quick return. Online auction websites are enabling a new kind of Cigar traders to buy and sell Cuban cigars for a living. This video is an introduction to a few videos I'll be making about the subject.

    my friend - we are absolutely on the same wavelength lately. I was with some friends and family this thursday evening and I was informing them how the current environment in recent years has made trading in cigars a relative small business opportunity(for better or worse).
    i have noticed at the moment some current inventory has allowed for more supply & relative price correction
    anyways-happy holidays 😚💨

    I've been waiting for this. Very interesting discussion. I consider cigars a very unique investment type as you need to choose very wisely (larger ring gauge, REs, Cohibas...etc) also factoring in maintenance costs (temp, which might run you a lot if you live in a hot environment...) co.petition, fakes ... etc. Pretty sure the bubble has neared popping. Cant wait for your take, happy holidays.

    I am building out my collection - I think for me it’s finding boxes on at auction for aged cigars… The oldest box I have is 2018 but most are 2 years old so it finding the short term acquisition of smoking something now and aging the others. Beautiful bottle - Chablis is one of my favourites.

      currently, i am literally packed with 2018 & 2019 box dates. I'll admit, at times I am ambivalent to smoke them knowing their rate at auction.😚💨

    One factor that will affect it is the same historical process that many collectibles such as sports trading cards and comics went through. Earlier, many were used / worn / discarded. Once people decided to collect the large amount that were sold originally were now limited to the ones left available and in perfect shape.
    To me, the same thing has happened to cigars. Most were smoked and the few that were kept were by major buyers or shops. Once demand for aged cigars skyrocketed and Habanos increased prices on new cigars (as well as having production issues during covid) the market began to boom.
    Now, people are looking for new production cigars that are already at a high price to resell. It may work slightly in the short term but nothing like prior as now many are buying and holding, hoping to cash in. This results in a larger market but a much larger inventory of the wanted items, leading to less appreciation (if any) and typically to a crash at some point.

      Thank you for the comment sir. I could have cashed out on my entire collection but I bought my cigars to smoke them. I would only sell my cigars if I desperately needed the money. To pay for medical treatment for a family member for example.

    Cigars are definitely an investment in todays market specially for those who understand the value point. What to buy and hold for a no brainer double up?. Any regional that is big gauge over 50 and under $500 dollars a box. Large gauge cigars are where you should put your money...Why?. The American's prefer the large gauge and willing to pay TOP $$$ to get it. Buy 10K today of your every day cigars and your will double your money in 36 months.

    You are absolutely right...if people want to invest in cuban cigars, in my opinion, they shouldn't target Cohiba. Because those are already sold above market prices. In my opinion, people should be looking at Regional editions. These are still priced more or less ok, and some of them are absolute gems. But they should buy Regionals that are very limited in production (not more than 2500 boxes), and have an attractive vitolas (Laguito no.1, Laguito no.2, Churchill, Duke..and few more)...

    • @habanonews
      @habanonews  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the question Tony. It is the second time I hear about that. As you know and if you do not know I am not working for Habanos nor against. I am trying to inform so when I don't know something I enquire. Now I am going to enquire. there is a good video from Cigar 888 about this: ruclips.net/video/LS3uoz0nQTw/видео.html, It is the first time I hear about it. I cannot confirm it nor deny it. I'll look into it.

    I think the 55’s will likely not increase at all. Most people buying these aren’t smoking them.

    There is something I am curious about, a that is if prices in Cuba are comparetevely cheaper than other markets? There was a time when I visited Cuba couple time a year and I would get a few boxes, prices then were a lot better, even more some in comparison to other countries, unfortunately due to my current location, travelling tgere is a bit more complicated. I am planning a trip in a few months to a nearby country and wordering if it was worth it stopping there to get a few boxes.
    Thank you in advance for any feedback in this regard.

    • @habanonews
      @habanonews  8 месяцев назад

      Prices in Cuba are no longer cheaper. A Cohiba Siglo VI will be $100 as at 01.01.24. It is the new strategy of Habanos to have a similar price across the different markets which is difficult taking into account the different tax systems.

    What Cubans boxes do you recommend we buy ? To age and invest in? Thank you. I have about 6 boxes of Cubans dated 2017, a few from 2016 and many 2022 and a few from 2023.

    The problem with collecting Cuban Cigars is that there is no consistency in quality you have to study box codes dates if you don’t know what you’re buying or who you’re buying from the box could be worth more than the cigars

    • @habanonews

    Investment implies future value, if the rest of the commonwealth countries follow New Zealand there will be no smokers to buy them in 20 -30 years.

    • @habanonews

      I believe that NZ has discovered that the market is often bigger and stronger than government and organizes itself in case of a ban. I believe banning cigarettes is like banning alcohol or prostitution It will always be there despite the ban but uncontrollable and in the hands of the mob.

    who the hell is smoking cigars at $100+ apiece with any regularity? That should shock the sensibilities of even filthy rich people. It's a ridiculous price and one cigar, no matter how good, is not worth it. So people must only be buying up cubans just to have them, store them away in their humidors and hope they go up in value more. As soon as the Cubans have sold everyone who wants them all their cigars they can afford at jacked up prices, then, in order to continue making money, they will have to drop the price til it makes sense to buy them to smoke again. Then who is gonna want to buy your Cohibas for 300, 400, 1000 dollars?

    • @habanonews
      @habanonews  2 месяца назад

      This is exactly what happened in the Burgundy wine sector. I used to drink some burgundy wines costing €100 a bottle and the price soared to €4,000 a bottle in 10 years. This is supply and demand. Whether people are drinking them or storing them is another issue. We are living in a capitalist run world and we must accept the rules and consequences. I am not buying this €4,000 a bottle wine but other less known good wines. Will we see a collapse of Cuban cigar prices the way we are currently seeing a collapse of Burgundy Grand Cru prices? Wait and see? There are people spending €100,000 for a lunch in Ibiza and St Tropez. Do I think it is obscene? Yes, especially when they throw champagne on each others. But they are free to do what they want with their money. Do I think that paying €2,000 for a Cohiba Majestuosos is obscene? Yes I do. Is it worth it? Not at all. But If you are filthy rich and want to smoke Majestuosos or Behikes it is your right! The number of millionaires and even billionaires is rising all the time…
