I so relate to a lot of this--especially coming online originally to share our journey in the hopes of helping someone else out--but now still wanting to share and talk about the products I use, but feeling like I'm going to get yelled at. 😂 I think something that makes me sad though is that people *sharing* their journeys and trying out all these things is what started bringing natural hair care to the forefront, and encouraged experts to get MORE educated on the topic, allowed more products to be made for us... and now a lot of people are quick to 'hate on' where we came from you know? And I recognize that there *are* more professionals out there... but they are still not accessible for everyone. Where I am... I have STILL yet to find anyone. There just isn't a big enough Black population. Quite honestly I think I would have to travel to the states, or out of province to find someone who know what they're doing.
Ahh! I totally get what you mean about wanting to share products! I hope I didn't come off as hypercritical when I mentioned how sometimes people don't like things if they're not using them correctly 😩 That is an excellent point and I didn't quite consider it that way until now, but yes, it certainly seems like many are hating on where the community came from and ignoring all the progress that was made. ACCESS definitely plays a role in this too and I can't believe I forgot to discuss that! I drive about an hour to meet with my hair care professional and I realize that's still not horrible in comparison to having to go even further than that. I know I am going to sound like a Black Girl Curls stan and I promise this isn't turning into a stan account lmbo but they do have a Digital library to help if you don't have access to a person close enough to you. I really hope that changes for you soon though! That probably also feels a bit isolating to live in a place without access.

Great topic and well said. I returned natural back in 2004. I didn’t know anything about RUclips then. I did what I knew to do to grow my hair, keep it braided ( no hair added). Then I went to a salon and began getting 2 strand twists. I wore twists until I accidentally found Mahogany Curls on RUclips and I was introduced to wash n gos. I was in the RUclips era of co washing, no silicones, the curly girl method, etc. It was a lot going on but it was exciting because I was learning about my hair and to love my hair. When the No oils and butters came on the scene, I was thinking about locking my hair. I have been loc’d 5 years now. I enjoyed my loc journey and now I am ready to rock my curls again. I have been watching lots of videos regarding the No oils and butters and look forward to simplifying my wng routine. I guess I said all that to say, the old natural methods served a positive purpose. Black women were learning their natural hair and excited about it. Now we have learned that some methods can be simplified, it’s progression. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as we don’t forget where we came from, it got us here.
It was definitely an exciting time then! Yes there was lots of trial and error trying so many new products and ‘methods’ and some of us just like to try new things. Did I spend a small fortune trying this and that? Yes 😩😂but it was fun for me too because just like you said I was learning about my hair and to love it. In a way, it’s an exciting time now too because now that we are seeing how streamlined and simple things can be, people are falling in love with their hair all over again and not dreading caring for it. While yeah maybe we were misinformed before, I absolutely agree- we can’t forget where we came from in that sense (or the ones of us who will admit where we came from lol).
@@TheKhrissss I agree this is an exciting time as well. I’m definitely excited about learning a different method that will perfect my wng. I always had the definition but it was stiff and dry (Eco styler🤣). As soon as my locs are all combed out, I will be documenting learning this new process. I found a stylist here in Georgia and I realized that some one here on RUclips goes to her already. It may be you, I don’t remember.
@@naturalcurls4life576 I’m excited for you too! Now I’m not gonna lie, some of the gels may still have that stiff and dry feeling BUT that does not mean that your actual hair is dry and you’ll even be able to tell when you go to wash it- that’s just that lasting POWER 😂. This was a really good video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree with you about where our validation comes from and what we can control. We can grow a lot when we learn to hold ourselves accountable.
I appreciate your feedback and thanks for watching! We definitely have to be better at holding ourselves accountable with hair (and everything else too!).
Black girl curls have simplified my routine. Washed, conditioned, styled and dried in under 2 hours. I used to hate 'wash day' prior to following this routine.
And again I say, when you know better you do better! I have always washed my hair weekly. I co washed one time in early 2000’s. I knew without anyone telling me that some people on RUclips could shampoo with Dawn and no conditioner and they would have a bomb hairstyle. You may want to share with BGC that you may not have found them without RUclips. And just because you say no shade, people know when shade is being thrown. Oh and there are a ton of people who would love to “ partner” with a styler but they can’t afford it. We out here in these streets appreciate you and others who share info. I went natural before RUclips and I G and all the other stuff. Ladies just want to look nice and not be preyed upon to do so. And just like the beauty product industry if people continue to pay the predatory prices they will continue to screwed! You’re hair is beautiful. Thank you for the videos you share they are helpful
I realize that partnering regularly with a stylist isn’t financially easy for many especially during these tough times 😅 but even if it’s just ONCE I think it’s worth it. I know it may seem like a lot but I wouldn’t say the prices are predatory because consider how often you’d go, and additionally you’re paying for their time and expertise. It’s not like you have to show up shampood and blow dried like some of the horror stories I’ve heard 😩. I’m glad these videos are helping SOMEONE, I really appreciate you watching and thank you for the compliment!
@@TheKhrissss I guess I’m from the south and a different era. I have seen some of those stylist services 300.00 up to 800. 00. And no refund. That’s predatory to me. I have spent hundreds of dollars on product, CIK stylists, curly hair stylist all the things so I don’t have a problem paying for services rendered. The other thing that’s predatory is having new clients versus established customer prices. IfI have been to one stylist, paid and got a haircut and stayed within the maintenance timeframe but want to go to a different stylist. @@marikyles2139 no need to apologize- this is a good dialogue! I’m sure it varies from person to person but I imagine the logic behind having the difference in prices for new clients be established customers is because while yes they may be able to see that you’ve had a cut, they’re still having to go in and reshape and clean up someone else’s work.
