    Love this video.
    I have studied formal Arabic so the concept of the dual is apparently more widespread than I imagined.
    In 2017, I visited a neighbor who relocated to Cairo. We to the train from Cairo to Luxor along with her children. After a few days, they went north and I rode the train to Aswan.
    I hired a car an driver in Aswan and drove back to Luxor stopping in Kom Omba where I learned about Sobek, the crocodile god. There was a museum with mummified crocodiles and informative reading throughout the delightful museum.
    The Temple was actually the Temple of Horus and Sobek.
    Fascinating to bring some of my travel memories together.

    • @waelisc
      @waelisc Год назад +4

      Perhaps interestingly, English did distinguish singular, dual and plural too, during the Anglo-Saxon period, although it's barely a trace, now.
      Knowing English, Arabic and Egyptian had the dual means it's probably widespread across the Eurasian and African continents, since I believe those three languages are descendants of different language families [correction: whilst English belongs to the Proto-Indo-European language family, whereas Arabic and Egyptian are in fact related, both from the Afro-Asiatic family. I should add, whether PIE, A-A and other language families are ultimately related too hasn't been established].

      Dual is steal in use in Church-Slavonic language, the liturgical language of Russian orthodox old believers church.

    • @1earflapping
      @1earflapping Год назад +8

      @@waelisc Yes, the dual survives in modern English in the words scissors, ballocks, trousers, pants. These nouns give rise to awkward forms because the concept of dual number is no longer understood. People don’t want to say “pants is”, so they say “pants are “ or “a pair of pants is”. I saw a clothing catalog that tried to deal with this by eliminating the s, and calling the item a pant. Absurd.

    • @waelisc
      @waelisc Год назад

      @@1earflapping I've noticed some of that singular-plural confusion too and still can't get used to it. I reckon the tendency to contract "there are" to "there's" increasingly contributes to this as well and am honestly quite curious to see just how far it all goes, whether English might begin to lose certain singular-plural distinctions altogether, but I suppose we'll see.

    • @1earflapping
      @1earflapping Год назад +1

    I have a large two volume dictionary of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and a book of a full translation of the Book of the Dead.
    Many years ago, one of my art teachers had us paint a large mural in ancient Egyptian style.
    Most of the students just copied out of books, I did my painting, but then surrounded it with a lot of text that actually said something.
    For the record, it WASN'T something polite.
    I revel in the fact I got kudos from the principle of the school for a painting that called his various hygiene and sexual practices into question and cast doubt upon the marital status of his parents.
    I love those books.

    To Dr. Ilona Regulski: Is the following accurate/correct to say then ---- Egyptian Hieroglyphs have more than one possible reading, dependent on context. Signs could have both a phonetic (single consonant or syllable) value or an ideogrammatic (word) reading, but could even be utilized as phonetic complements or logograms (a written character that represents a word or phrase), reinforcing the reading of words they were attached to.

    • @britishmuseum
      @britishmuseum  2 года назад +3

      Very much so! Hieroglyphs can be tricky, because even through they look like pictures, most of the time the meaning of the sign is not the same as the thing pictured. It is a mixed script - some signs are alphabetic, like the letters in our alphabet. Other signs make a group of sounds, like a syllable. Still other signs are an entire word. Occasionally the same hieroglyph can do all three things! And sometimes, hieroglyphs aren’t pronounced at all - these are called ‘determinatives’, and they sit at the end of a word to give us a clue to the meaning of that word.

    Ilona, since you’re really into grammar, can you explain the hieroglyph grammar? Particularly syntax and morphology. So what was the word order? Was it mainly SOV, like many of the Eastern Mediterranean? What the morphology more agglutinative (attaching grammar to verbs) or synthetic (function words that are free-floating like English)?

So how do you tell the difference between a duplicate symbol to determine if it means "two of something" or if it means turning a noun into an adjective?
