    I didn’t really have a meltdown over King of The Monsters. It IS your opinion at the end of the day, and I am not taking you to task for it. What I failed to mention (I even brought this up in my documentary about SNK & their Neo-Geo family of consoles) was that according to GamePro: there WAS going to be a Turbografx-16 port for KOTM in 1993 by Working Designs, but it never came into fruition.
    I remember a few years ago, when I watched a stream where the streamer compared Magician Lord to other refusal Pack-In Titles like Altered Beast, Keith Courage, and so on. He said that he read it from Chad Okada: The Game Lord himself. I looked everywhere, but I couldn’t find any sources to back those claims up.
    As far as I’m aware, gamelord.com is gone from it’s server, and for now, it is hearsay as to whether or not Magician Lord is a bad game-let alone a refusal pack-in title. The game DOES show it’s age, sure... but the more the game is played, the more it grows on you. I know it does me, and I enjoy playing it every now and then-finding new secrets... JUST LIKE METAL SLUG!

      If you look over the list of early Neo Games I think you could make the argument (aside from difficulty) that ML is the most mainstream game available that might appeal to an arcade gamer as well as someone in the home. It’s also a side scroller which was more the rage back then. It kind of normalized their console for the home market in some ways. Truth be told though pickings were slim early on.

    Most of these "bad" games came from the early days of the Neo Geo when the SNES wasn't even out yet. Thus are not being fairly judged. The one game I thought was really bad was Super Dodge Ball. As the scaling mechanics make the game unplayable.

    One dishonorable mention is that being more of a player in the Super Sidekicks Series, the second game, Super Sidekicks 2 is the worst one of the bunch, like you have to pick a very op team and plus to score goals when the computer gets very cheap you have to do a high pass at the right time and do a series of head passes while holding the stick diagonally depending on where the players are but some of them will get stupid due to the AI and will make you fail the trick into scoring.
    The graphics are pre-render, like if they're digitized actors but not like super realistic digitized actors on non Neo Geo Games, I mean the players, plus the animations are choppy so they're not that great, plus some of the buttons of that exact game (Super Sidekicks 2) don't do much at all, like some of the buttons are completely useless.
    (I know it's a soccer game and they aren't that big in the states but Yeah... I respect your opinion if you're not a soccer fan or don't like soccer in general.)

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      I actually grew up playing soccer for the same school as Ben Olsen. He had a bit more of a career than I did, lol. It was fun though, we always knew he was gifted. I have only played the Sidekicks games periodically, nothing substantial for me to feel like I can really judge them. In fact, with there being four of them they all kind of run together in my mind. Come to think of it there are a lot of soccer games on Neo Geo and I struggle with keeping them all sorted in my head. There does seem to be a debate about which of those Sidekicks games is the best though. I’ll have to go back and play the first one and then work my way through each one the next few weeks. Thanks for the comment!

    Interesting list as usual Scarlet. Burning Fight was fascinating for the fact it help introduced me to Japan's nightlife in the early 1990's. I never knew about Japanese "Shotengai's ",underground malls, or even moving walk escalators. These were all new to me that amazed me as a boy. Still does to this day with that game.
    3 Count Bout. Love that pro wrestling title. The Dodge conversation van in Leo Bradley's stage is exactly like the model that we had growing up as a boy that my parents purchased. The game is a royal pain at first, but i found out from friends that you had to either collide or do high risk maneuvers in order to weaken the CPU to do a grappling move. Then the game gets fun for me. 8^)

    I know this is a late comment from the last one I posted, but I forgot to give my answer on my most hated Neo•Geo game that still got decent reactions:
    Double Dragon!
    Because I'm a fan of the originals, and SNK turned it into just another random Street Fighter II clone that makes the franchise lose its charm, style, personality, originality and uniqueness. What makes it worse is that it was inspired by the live-action flop.
    SNK should've just rebooted the original Double Dragon trilogy onto the Neo•Geo, and add in a versus mode that plays similarly to Aggressors of Dark Kombat.

    Anyone who is old enough to remember the early 90's will tell you that the vast majority of NeoGeo games were painstakingly average at best. SNK never were and never have been a top tier game development company. The only 2 reasons the NeoGeo received any attention back in the day was because 1.) It was ridiculously priced 2.) You could play literal arcade games at home during the era where arcades were exploding in popularity. Unfortunately for SNK, it was CAPCOM and KONAMI that caused the explosion. Ask any kid back then what arcade games he wanted at home and he'd more than likely say "TMNT, Simpsons, X-Men, StreetFighter 2, and Mortal Kombat." Absolutely no-one was piling into the arcades to play Art of Fighting, King of Monsters, Mutation Nation, Fatal Fury, or Robo Army.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад +2

      That was kind of my argument for King of Monsters. I truly only gave it pity quarters at a time when I had SF2, Sunsetriders, Turtles, NBA Jam, T2, etc. available to me. It was occupying my time until a better machine was available. I will say though, I was one of the few who did checkout the Neo Geo to see what games were in rotation. I played a lot of MS back then. Based on stories I’ve heard from others though, particularly Europe and South America, some of the Neo titles were a lot bigger there than they ever were here in the States. Street Slam surprisingly seems to be a good example of that.

    I really disagree with this list. (I understand it is a fan list)
    I recognize that every game on this list has issues, but I think it's a stretch for these to be considered among the worst. Many of these games are criticized for being repetitive, but that is true of so many arcade games, especially beat'em ups. I would play any of these games over Top Player Golf, Legend of Success Joe, Riding Hero, Ghost Pilots and a few others.
    Many of the games listed were early titles, but I appreciate many of the early Neo Geo titles for their variety. The developers didn't always hit the mark, but I prefer those games to the deluge of fighting games that overwhelmed the releases in the middle/end of the Neo Geo's run.

    I've tried both Sengoku and Sengoku 3 (Not the second because my multicart doesn't have it), and yeah, they do get quite repetitive. I would much rather play Golden Axe or Streets of Rage, because even though they don't look as impressive as Sengoku, I don't get bored playing them. I feel SNK had a tendency to focus on style over substance when it came to their beat em ups. I'd have to say none of the games here even come close to the disappointment of Legend of Success Joe, and while I haven't played Riding Hero, I've heard many bad things about it. Kind of unfortunate, because you'd think the Neo Geo would have more games like it to show off its scaling capabilities, similar to Sega's Super Scaler games like Outrun and Hang-On.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      Riding Hero just wasn’t much fun in the arcade because it lacked fun controls and wasn’t a vast improvement over Hang-On. Racing people with joysticks just wasn’t as great as a having a wheel or handlebars.

    Fun Facts about SNK’s Burning Fight
    (バーニング・ファイト) :
    • Much like how Capcom’s Final Fight was inspired by the film *Streets of Fire* (1984), Burning Fight is also inspired by another 80s action-thriller called *Black Rain* (1989). After the release of Burning Fight, a new action-thriller was released three years later that had a similar plot and characters to the game, the film is known as *Showdown in Little Tokyo* (1991).
    • Billy King is modeled after Dolph Lundgren; Ryu Saeba is modeled after Ryo Saeba from the manga, anime, and OVA series *City Hunter* (1985 - 1991), as well as Guy from Final Fight; Duke Edwards is basically the typical “blonde brawler in blue” beat ‘em up character much like Billy (Double Dragon), Cody (Final Fight), Axel Stone (Streets of Rage), Snake (Datsugoku), Berserker (The Combatribes), Paul (Riot City), etc.
    • This is one of the only SNK hits that got left into obscurity, simply because Duke, Billy, and Ryu never made it on the spot in *The King of Fighters* franchise. Instead, Duke Edwards appears in *KOF 2000* as a “striker” (assist fighter) for Ramon, as well as making a few cameo appearances in *KOF '94: Rebout* where Duke has a background cameo in Mexico; also in *KOF 2002: UM* where he is shown in the Neo Geo World stage; and lastly *Neo Geo Battle Coliseum* where Yuki transforms into Duke during his Submarine Screw after using Memory Card Slash.

    burning fight isn't a bad brawler, sengoku 3 is one of the best brawlers in arcades. I enjoyed a lot ninja combat, yes, the graphics are very dated today, but it got that double dragon's feeling, and the playability is very good. 3 count bout had an extreme difficulty, but i studied the game a lot and i can pass with one credit, and analyzing slowly the game wasn't a button smasher. You have got a strategy to win every fight and when the strenght of the rival is low you can win the "button smash fight". One strategy is jump from the corner to the rival, and when the rival is knocked on the mat, you run to the corner and wait for the moment to jump again.

    This was an awesome idea for a video! I am admittedly sad to not see Art of Fighting 2 here, easily my most hated Neo Geo fighting game but hey, you can't win em all I suppose. My thoughts on the games mentioned here though (keep in mind that I'm not going to rag on you since this video is about OUR thoughts so you're off the hook my man lol XD):
    Burning Fight - I never really had too much interest in this one based on how it looks alone. After seeing it and hearing about it from here though, it's quite funny how much they ripped off from Final Fight in this game. This one also came out a full year after the MVS released so there' no excuse why it wasn't better. There are far better beat em ups on Neo Geo than this one, an easy pass.
    The Super Spy - I personally don't mind this game. It's similar to Crossed Swords, just with guns and fists instead of swords. Not perfect, but not bad.
    3 Count Bout - I'm not much of a wrestling fan, and after hearing about this one here I'm pretty convinced that I wouldn't like this game either.
    Sengoku 3 - I happen to own the 2nd game in this series and I thought that one was pretty awesome. Sengoku 3 isn't on CD so I'll have no chance to play it, but after watching it I can tell that even though it looks fantastic the repetition will bring it down quite a bit. Sengoku 2 didn't have this problem, even Mutation Nation was better in that regard. Still a much better game than most others mentioned here and in your last video.
    Ninja Combat - I have to be honest here. Even though the animations are stiffer than a man about to get laid I'd still give this game a go. There are worse games overall on the Neo Geo than this. Ninja Combat is also a very early Neo Geo game being released on the MVS in 1990, the AES in 1991 and the CD in 1994. Each year of the games release is also the same year its respective hardware it played on was released as well so I find it very difficult to rag on Ninja Combat. It's like saying the Magnavox Odyssey or Atari 2600 sucks because they're so primitive, not exactly a fair judgement since they're one of the first of its kind. Games had to start somewhere and Neo Geo is not exempt from this.
    That's all I've got here bro, hope you have a great day! :)

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад +1

      That’s a fair rundown. As with anything subjective there are bound to be discrepancies and healthy counter arguments. I too really like Sengoku 2. It’s probably my favorite in the series. I’d also call out Mutation Nation as my favorite beat em up on the system!

      Bro, if I could high five or fist bump you right now I would! Mutation Nation is an excellent Neo Geo beat em up, way better than many people give it credit for. The animation is silky smooth, the graphics are top notch and the gameplay is very solid. A friend and I played this one together on coop one morning and we were having fun the entire time. Our only regret was that we didn't finish it before he had to leave for work, lol. @@ScarletSprites That's pretty cool that you have a 4-slot MVS. Is it consolized or inside a cab? I'm dabbling in the idea of getting a consolized 1-slot so I can have a chance to play the games that never made it to CD. I don't have intentions of collecting AES or MVS carts due to cost, but a nice multicart or Darksoft flashcart would be a neat piece of hardware to own instead. It will help save some money in the long run while I scoop up all the CD games.

      I have it inside of a cabinet. The CD consoles are cool, I used to have a top loader. They seem more appealing these days than ever with the ODE solution. I always liked the CDZ but I’ve never owned one. I also don’t think I’d recommend collecting carts at this juncture, except maybe a handful of games that you really like maybe? Between the MiSTer, the flash carts you mentioned, and the ODE there are a lot of great options out there.

      I think the biggest thing that surprises me is just how many of these older arcade games are basically just pixelated Kung Fu movies with the same awful plotline but with great visual effects

    • @ScarletSprites

      The first Sengoku is available for Sega CD. It’s not terrible either. The second one is probably my favorite though. Visually and arguably control/mechanics the third is supreme...it just is sooo monotonous.

      Sengoku 3 is awesome, and at worst is an average game, not one of the worst on the Neo Geo. Sengoku 1 is worse in every way, not only repetitive, but most enemies did in one hit so forget about any combos.

      I go back and forth on that one. I play it every few months or so. I’d 100% agree the zoom feature isn’t used in an ideal way. I think the vision was probably greater than the execution.

    You had me till you slammed Sengoku 3, out of all the side scrollers (very few on the Neo a true shame) You lost me entirely, the combo system and the music are far above anything that was available on the Neo, the orignal games were far worse not unplayable but nothing remotely special. Unlockable characters that add to replay and challenge make this a MUST PLAY on the Neo Geo for anyone wanting a two player beat em up. Not to mention the Golden Axe style magic moves really add to the game play, it is obvious you really don't know how to play the game other then the slam the A button or B button over and over without really seeing how deep the combat system is for a side scroller. I agreed with all of your other picks but Sengoku 3 is where I draw the line as I own the MVS version and play it to death and its a major blast with guests over who have never played it and love side scrollers. Unfair to put this in the list as there is more to the game then you even bother to let people know is even available to them.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      The first two are better imo. Three definitely has its fans though. It’s just a different type of game and arguably isn’t really a beat em up at all, or, wasn’t intended to be. Either way, it’s a shame because with a little more polishing it could be sooo good.
