My favorite all-time console, by a scant margin. I will say however, that the Japanese Super Famicom library more than plays an integral part. Games like Doremi Fantasy, Ganbare Goemon 2, The Violinist Of Hamelin, Macross Scrambled Valkyrie and Magical Pop'n belong up there with the finest North American releases, in my humble opinion. Of The games you mentioned, I keep remembering how, at the time I thought Batman Returns was an arcade port, because of those big, detailed sprites.
The japanese games go a long way, as I don't love a lot of what are considered the best games on the system. Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie is my pick for best shooter on the system. I like the Mazinger game too(also by Winkysoft, just like Macross). It has flaws, but I still find it a lot of fun.

It's nice to see a post like this because all too often I've seen Genesis fans or Sega fans in general describe the SNES as having a few good first party titles that they think are overrated and a bunch of RPGs which don't interest them because of their preference for arcade-style games. In the same way that some Nintendo fans who wrongly dismiss Genesis as little more than a Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage machine should check out the good but lesser known Genesis titles (the Treasure games, the various shmups, the Wolfteam/Renovation games, etc..), Genesis fans who are true gaming fans should do the same with the SNES.
There are just so many amazing games on the SNES. He shows some brief footage of Cybernator, I liked that alot as a kid. Plus Metal Marines, U.N. Squadron, just too many to list. The games art style has aged well, unlike the ps1 era with its early 3d polygons.
Cybernator is such a slept on game. Japan got a bunch of these types of Mech-Side-Scroller-action/platformer/run-n-gun-style games across multiple consoles and this is one of the very few that made it over here. It's a really fun game. Also, i love early 3d polygon graphics. they're so quaint compared to today but most of the games still hold up as very fun today.
I love how you can really feel how personal this list is for you. It comes across that each of these games really means something to you beyond how fun they are to play. Great video and list!
Videos like this is why i enjoy your channel. Your reviews are fair and they dont try to shit on Snes and downplay Nintendo and your Sega videos gives Sega there respect too without overrating everything Sega does like most Sega fan's seem to do.
@TrueSinister and your comment wasn't generalising Nintendo fan's? saying its most toxic fandom out there. Honestly who care's. i enjoy both Sega and Nintendo, You just taken my comment out of context. Go outside and get some fresh air.
TrueSinister, there are plenty of toxic Sega fans out there, they aren't hard to find either (there is one trolling these comments if you lok hard enough), they are just as bad as the SNES fans that are toxic. To be honest, most of them probably never played an SNES or a Genesis when they were brand new and hot.

This was definitely one of the better personal Top 10 SNES lists I've seen on RUclips. It's a diverse list, and doesn't have many of the usual suspects. You've got a certain taste in games and this list shows it. I respect that!

Everyone can. I was a Nintendo fanboy growing up, coming off the Atari 2600, but gave Sega their fair shot in 1998 by buying a Model 2 Genesis (own a Model 1 these days, retired the Model 2). Some of us can be fair and play games for both systems, but there are those who are so hard assed about certain consoles, that they refuse to give them their just due. If I can get off my ass and give the Genesis/Mega Drive a chance by playing a lot of it's library and buying many games for it (to compliment my also big SNES/SFC library), there are Genesis fans who can get off their ass, play more SNES stuff, and see what they missed out on.

Excellent list. Congrats for making a list of your own. For me, the ultimate beatemup on the system is Maximum Carnage. It's long, difficult and chock full of characters. And Demon's Crest would also be on my list.
I love all these games but still my favourites are missing dkc trilogy, super Mario RPG, earthbound , terranigma, secret of Mana, Yoshi's island. Boy SNES library was huge
great channel - your love of games really shines through. the snes library is insane - your honourable mentions list alone has several contenders for many people’s greatest games of all time...
Super Castlevania 4 is my favorite SNES game of all time too. Everything about it is brilliant and perfectly executed. You have a good selection of games here and I agree with most of them. Some of them I haven't heard of so I have some exploring to do. I'm glad that you are covering the SNES and showing that its really the games more than the hardware that make a gaming generation great.
At first I was taken aback by Super Mario World and Zelda, A Link To The Past being honorable mentions, and not making your list, but then you listed 10 amazing games that helped me to understand your point of view. Also, I have to remind myself that we all have our own opinions and favorites, and nostalgia for certain games which had the biggest impact on our lives at the time.. this factor plays the biggest role for me when I list my favorites.. some of my picks are games that weren’t nearly as popular as the games that you might see on other people’s lists. Games like Ken Griffey Jr’s Major League Baseball for instance, would be on my top 10, due to all of the happy memories, playing against my brother for hours upon hours. Another game that you don’t hear about a whole lot, which would likely make it to my top 10, is Metal Warriors. I never even played the story mode.. but my brothers and I put countless hours into the battle mode (SO MUCH FUN!).. Then we got WWF Super Wrestlemania, which admittedly, isn’t a very good game lol but back when I was a youngin, my brother and I played this game A LOTTT. Also, my top ten would definitely include Earthbound, which was my very favorite game growing up. I loved it so much, and this was before I ever knew how much of a cult classic it was lol. I have a lot of fond memories of Super Mario World and Zelda ALTTP, so I’d have to include them. Donkey Kong country MIGHT make the list. Definitely F-Zero. Secret of Mana for sure! Also NBA Jam Mario Kart gotta make the cut! Some games to consider for me would be, Street Fighter 2, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Illusion of Gaia, Turtles in Time.. umm believe it or not, me, my bro, and my uncle, played the sh!t out of Uniracers 😆 I know the game isn’t popular among critics, but playing it against a friend, is soo much fun dude! I could go on and on and list so much more games, but I’ll spare you all. The SNES will always be in the running for the best system of it’s time, no doubt, despite the Genesis rivalry lol I was fortunate enough to have owned both consoles, as well as a ton of games for both, and I gotta say, the Genesis had a lotttt of great titles too, of which I spent countless hours playing. 😂 for ME, the SNES had the edge, but they both rule! P.S. YOU RULE TOO SEGA LORD X! I know I’m 2 years late to the party lmao but I only discovered your channel not too long ago, so thankfully I can now binge on all of your videos :)
I was beside myself that Zelda A Link to the Past wasn't in the top 10. I scrolled the comments because I knew I couldn't be the only person thinking that.
Absolutely crushing top 10 dude. As I said on the fb page, both the SNES & Genesis had their strong and weak points. While most of us had to pick our sides in those days, I'm super grateful and happy to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds today. Cheers brother!
Snes was the main console of choice at hollymead elementary school growing up among my peers but among older kids and adults sega was king, so of course my dad was more interested in sega
What I remember most was that FF 3 was being able to play co-op with someone else. You could choose which characters you controlled while someone else plays the others.
It is fun to see a top ten SNES list from someone that was a Sega kid. There are a few games you would see from many SNES fans, but then there is a throw-away Batman beatemup, Blackthorne, and F-Zero. Fitting of a Sega kid, this is the only list I have ever seen that didn't have at least one of SMW and ALttP in the top 10. Thanks for making this video!
I was a total SNES head in the 90s and didn't realize how much busier and faster Genesis games were which made for much better arcade style games. The SNES games you highlighted are all designed really well around the limitations and strengths of the system! Good choices!
Ahhhh. The mighty Snes.. My favorite console ever. That being said, I thank Mel for helping the Japanese Sega saturn to become my 2nd favorite ever 😊 Before watching, I can almost bet his number 1 game is :Super Castlevania 4😂
Darin Herrick, the things the SNES was able to do with sprites, like Mode 7,sprite rotation, and all, is what many consider why the SNES is a powerhouse. At the time, no consoles were capable of scaling backgrounds, nor sprites (Genesis actually could with software tricks if the developer was talented enough (see Panorama Cotton to see what a talented developer could do with scaling floors on a Genesis).
Soulblazer has always been a favorite for me. I recall renting it as a kid and playing it with my cousins. I bought it as an adult and immediately played through it again. It's not without faults, but I still love it! Totally agree with Metroid and Castlevania.
Did I hear the 16-bit instrumental version of "Money, money, money...", the theme song for 'Million Dollar Man' Ted Dibiase at the beginning of the video (1:20)?
Started things off with a surprise by placing A Link to the Past and Super Mario World in the honorable mentions. Most people (myself included) wind up placing those games at or near the top, so kudos for being different. Happy to see that Mega Man X, F-Zero, Super Metroid, Super Mario All-Stars and Super Castlevania IV all made the cut!
There’s no wrong answer.. I place stuff like SMW and DKC at the top too mostly because I was able to finish them.. Most while admittedly great I haven’t for whatever reason.. I’ll get stuck at some point and change off to another game..
I like before even watching. Haha. I grew up with Genesis but my brother had SNES. My top 3 (just list 3) : Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, A Link to the Past 😊
I was one that owned both consoles back in the day, and even though I loved the Genesis/Mega Drive, I sure knew the SNES/Super Famicom was superior when it came to the software.
@DejaVoodooDoll I had a Sega Genesis too. Yeah, it’s preference. Streets of Rage was a fun beat-em up. Next to its excellent soundtrack. Although there were other excellent beat-em up’s. Final Fight and Rival Turf were fun beat-em up’s. Graphics end game play are good, soundtrack, not so much compared to Streets of Rage, but pretty good games. Gunstar Heroes is a good game too. Although Contra lll came out a year earlier. You have some good games for the SNES The same that you have good games for the Genesis. There are games that are made for each console. That have their ups and the downs. Sound is always been very important to me. The Genesis has great beats, but the sound effects are not so good. I can tear apart both consoles honestly. Dare I go into the SNES Mortal Kombat.
It’s personal preference. Genesis had better arcade-style, pick-up-and-play games, and sports games. SNES had great platformers and RPGs. I think that looking back in hindsight the best games in the SNES library have a sort of timeless quality and stand out as masterpieces (A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Chrono Trigger, etc). But that doesn’t diminish the fact that the Genesis was a worthy competitor in its time. I will say though, I think it is a bit unfortunate also that Sega later did a lot of damage to some of its core franchises (* cough * Sonic * cough*) that have left a bit of a stain on its legacy. It also made a lot of dumb business decisions that burned a lot of fans with the 32X and Sega CD. But back in the early/mid 90s they were still at the top of their game. And the Genesis was great. If you were a kid back then in the 90s, you could have bought either system and been very happy. I owned a SNES then, but my neighbor had a Genesis, and I loved them both.
It's certainly personal preference. But it's also undoubtedly true the MDG has its own timeless classics as well. Sega commiting suicide out of the console market from poor business practices as you said, has stained its reputation and legacy, and damaged the perceived quality of their consoles too. Leaving Nintendo fans to re-write a false narrative, at the MDG's expense. The Snes has adventure style masterpieces as Noobfish mentioned...(Chrono, Lttp etc) while the MDG has arcade style masterpieces. Imo they are Streets of R2, Alien Soldier, Thunder Force IV, Shinobi 3, Musha give or take a couple others. With so many great honorable mentions like Rocket Knight, Ristar, Monster World IV etc just as the Snes does. It's unfair that these excellent games are devalued because of contrasting game designs, and the aforementioned. Even though the Snes does arguably have a software advantage, they are both still fantastic systems, but rarely is that the narrative that I see. Usually it's dismissive Nintendo fans ignorant of the MDG library, and dismiss it with close mindedness. "Thunder Force? What's that, it probably sucks"
Stoked to see Actraiser again after all these years! It rarely gets love in these kinds of favorite-list videos. And I definitely did some heavy work on pilot wings and f-zero during rainy weekends
Wuh? Top 10 Snes games? *Sega Fanboyism intensifies* NOTHING WAS GOOD ON THE DAMN SNES! I HATE SNES! *Hyperventilating* ... Why didn't we have a Donkey Kong Country on Genesis? 😭😭😭
I was, and still am, a die hard Nintendo fan, but I still loved going to my cousin's house and playing edgy Sega games with him. Never could get used to the controller though.
Being a Sega guy as well, I basically picked up an SNES for the Street Fighter II bundle (remember it wouldn't come to Sega for a year), and got hooked to Nintendo since then. And in that regard, Super Mario All Stars was such a massive deal, it made me catch up with Super Mario games in one package, with great quality of life improvements like the save feature. Great selection with not too obvious choices ! -
Very happy to see Actraiser here! I blindly bought a copy of it when I got my SNES back in the day and man it didn't disappoint. It turned out to be one of my favorite games on the system.
I remember getting Super Metroid at launch and it blowing my mind. My brother and I stayed up the whole weekend beating that thing. Then, I re-started and carefully went over every inch of it to get everything i could. A friend told me about saving my "friends" at the end so I went back to beat it again to save them! My all time favorite game on any system. The SNES and Genesis was definitely the golden age of games. Never played Blackthorne, now I got a new game to beat! Thanks!!

Cool to see you giving some respect to "Run Saber", even if it was just shown as footage without placing on your list. I loved that game, and it seemed like no one else knew about it. Very underrated. My undying devotion to "A Link to the Past" made me surprised to see it only make the honorable mentions, though. I think that's still my all time favorite game. "Blackthorn" looks cool. I'd never seen it before this video. Kinda reminds me of "Flashback", with the animation and alien worlds.

My favorite console along with the Saturn! Great video!! I also really enjoyed Batman Returns, wish it was 2 player!

This brings back amazing memories. I still remember my first time playing Super Mario World as a kid and just being in complete awe
Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse is probably the most under rated game I've played on the SNES.
And there were two more of those right after, all play just as good as the original. The third one though remained a Japanese exclusive till the GBA.
You ain't lying. The changing theme of the character and environments is phenomenal even by today's standards.
Illusion of Gaia
Mine would have to be The Adams Family Pugsleys Scavenger Hunt
The mickey mouse circus game was good to
Actraiser was a kickass game and one often underappreciated.
John Riddlebaugh I’m not a fan of that in terms of playing it but I like watching people beat it.
I enjoy the game, but that boss rush at the end is too much for me.
@@TrevRockOne it is easiest game i played on snes
They just finished a remake on the new consoles. Haven't tried it yet. But definitely plan on it.
Mega Man X is still one of my most memorable games of my childhood.. it was perfect in every way, even the soundtrack was awesome
I played through X1 and X2 multiple times. That and Zelda were sooooo good
Super Castlevania IV is my fav game of all time.
Great list. Always said Super Metroid was the best game on any system anytime and great to see it so high on your list.
Im really not sure how anybody puts another game above Super Metroid.
@@ryananderson4315 Yeah, Castlevania is worse in every respect.
Videos like this is why i enjoy your channel. Your reviews are fair and they dont try to shit on Snes and downplay Nintendo and your Sega videos gives Sega there respect too without overrating everything Sega does like most Sega fan's seem to do.
@21st 'I'm not a fan of them. Nintendo fanboys can be just as bad.
@TrueSinister Sega fans can be just as toxic and immature. you've proved it, Thumbs up from me.
I have watched many retro reviews from many different people, but by far you are the best at it, I love every video you have, and I have watched every single one, and you're detailed game reviews are amazing, thank you, and I always admire you're work buddy! Miguel
I remember back in 96 I was at an uncle's house and he had a SNES. And he had blackthorn but it was kicking his ass so he let me try it. It kicked my ass too but it was fun so I kept on and finally beat it. Good times
This was definitely one of the better personal Top 10 SNES lists I've seen on RUclips. It's a diverse list, and doesn't have many of the usual suspects. You've got a certain taste in games and this list shows it. I respect that!
Sega lord x is just killin' it
For me my top 10 is not in no particular order.
Mortal Kombat II
Chrono trigger
Super Mario kart
Super mario all-stars
Mega man x 2
Legeng of zelda - link to the past
Super metroid
Street fighter ii turbo
Teenage mutant ninja turtles - turtles in time
R-type iii

Solid choice for #1. And you're right, gen 4 was great. At the time gen 5 and its stuttery polygons really felt like a step back to me.
Gen 5 3d looks terrible to me. Huge step backwards imo.
@@jc.1191 I've since learned to appreciate it, especially Saturn 3D which in the right hands appears more solid. But that's a lot easier to in hindsight, when it's not out there taking up all the oxygen in gaming.

Exactly how I feel. If this guy is a SEGA dude and he knew super well with SNES, man, I woudering about MEGA DRIVE 😉
The Genesis and Super Nes is pretty close for me. Dont think I can pick a favorite.
Not if you're hardcore like me 👍
Everyone can.
@@Bloodreign1 I just love the sega genesis, sega saturn and Dreamcast. They are part of so many happy moments in my life. But i Also Enjoy the Super Nintendo (The nintendo 64 not very much haha).

Could play Castlevania 4 indefinitely.
I was lucky in having a job and being able to afford a SEGA, and SNES. When it came to games I would rent them and then decided if I would buy or not. Good times.
I miss renting games!
It was so fun going to the video rental store and picking out a movie and an NES or Genesis game to rent for the weekend.
I miss going to blockbuster as a kid and me and my friend would steal many n64, ps1, SNES games cause they had no beepers on the entrance door so we would walk out when someone walked in and it was always packed on Friday and Saturday nights and I can't believe how many games we got away with

Excellent list. Congrats for making a list of your own. For me, the ultimate beatemup on the system is Maximum Carnage. It's long, difficult and chock full of characters. And Demon's Crest would also be on my list.
SNES is still the best console of all time. There were so many Games that where just awesome.
From that generation for sure, but PS2's game library is the most impressive in my view
The best.

There is something very *clean* about your channel. I can't put my finger on it man but I like it. It's nostalgia but *clean*
OH my! a top ten that left out as Honorable mention the "Generic List games" and goes for games to discover!!
Thanks!
The music is incredible. I can't believe it was on a cartridge.
You lived the best era of gaming man
I was beside myself that Zelda A Link to the Past wasn't in the top 10. I scrolled the comments because I knew I couldn't be the only person thinking that.
@@jackcobb1090 alttp is number 1
Absolutely crushing top 10 dude. As I said on the fb page, both the SNES & Genesis had their strong and weak points. While most of us had to pick our sides in those days, I'm super grateful and happy to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds today. Cheers brother!
A game that continues to be UNDERrated.... Soul Blazer... the music in the game was also incredible...
What an awesome pick for number 1! I remember feeling so accomplished after beating it!
Snes was the main console of choice at hollymead elementary school growing up among my peers but among older kids and adults sega was king, so of course my dad was more interested in sega
What I remember most was that FF 3 was being able to play co-op with someone else. You could choose which characters you controlled while someone else plays the others.
My Saturn and Super Famicom rest on the same shelf
I'm replaying FF3 on the GBA for fun.
Glad it was in your list.
A deserted island with 20 SNES games is all a person needs haha
Ahhhh. The mighty Snes.. My favorite console ever. That being said, I thank Mel for helping the Japanese Sega saturn to become my 2nd favorite ever 😊
Before watching, I can almost bet his number 1 game is :Super Castlevania 4😂
Mighty? Wasnt it the slowest consoles of the generation?
Not arguing just find your choice of words interesting.
Darin Herrick mighty in terms of library
Darin Herrick, the things the SNES was able to do with sprites, like Mode 7,sprite rotation, and all, is what many consider why the SNES is a powerhouse. At the time, no consoles were capable of scaling backgrounds, nor sprites (Genesis actually could with software tricks if the developer was talented enough (see Panorama Cotton to see what a talented developer could do with scaling floors on a Genesis).
And after you carefully analyse it's library, you realise that those games with it's weaker CPU? It makes it even mightier.
@@Edexote and the genesis had weak looking washed out colors and sounded like one of those old speak and spells lol
Being a Sega fan doesn't have to mean that you are a Nintendo hater.

Ahhh Contra Alien Wars, aka: the war America forgot
Soulblazer has always been a favorite for me. I recall renting it as a kid and playing it with my cousins. I bought it as an adult and immediately played through it again. It's not without faults, but I still love it! Totally agree with Metroid and Castlevania.

You finally went there Sega Lord X....... You traitor!!! LOL just kididng im glad you have made a video of this. :)
A real traitor when he covers PS1!
Super Castlevania IV’s ost is GOD TIER!
I think you're right rduke. @Orzuum What are they?

I owed or rented most of these multiple times on the list, and it's a solid list! As always man good job!

SLX is one of those Sega fans with sense, he doesn't beat his chest and call a console superior over another, like I have seen a number of other rabid Sega fans do. With age comes maturity, and this is a video that was done with that maturity, and mostly a fanbase that follows this channel that also has it (MOSTLY, not all who come here).
